Anatomy (meninges of brain)
1. Meninges
Meninges are the membranes Protect the brain and spinal cord.
Meninges consist of three membranes:
1. Dura mater
2. Arachnoid mater
3. Pia mater
The meninges of brain and spinal cord are continuous, being linked through the
foramen magnum.
Meninges located between bone and soft tissues of nervous system.
Loation:
2. 1. Dura mater:
• Dura mater is a thick membrane that is the
outermost of the three layers of the meninges that
surround the brain and spinal cord.
• Dura mater is closest to skull.
• Dura mater composed of two:
1. Endosteal layer:
• It is attached to skull.
• It is not continues with dura mater of spinal
cord.
2. Meningeal layer:
• Dura mater proper which cover the brain.
• It is continues with dura mater of spinal cord.
• It is folded inwards as 4 septa between part of
the brain.
• The function of these septa is to restrict the
rotatary displacement of the brain.
3. Dural folds:
There are 4 dural folds :
1. Falx cerebri
2. Falx cerebelli
3. Tentorium cerebelli
4. Diaphragma sellae
Dural sinuses also called cerebral
sinuses or cranial sinuses.
Dural sinuses are venous
channels found between
periosteal and meningeal layers
of dura mater in brain.
Dural sinuses:
4. 2. Arachnoid mater:
Delicate impermeable and avascular
membrane covering the brain
Lying between dura mater (externally) and Pia
mater (internally)
Separated from dura mater by a potential
space, the subdural space (filled by a film of
fluid)
Separated from pia mater by the subarachnoid
space (filled with CSF)
All cerebral arteries and veins lie in
subarachnoid space.
Provide cushioning effect for the CNS
5. 3. Pia mater:
Pia mater is the innermost, thin, delicate and
highly vascular membran.
Closely invests the brain, covering the gyri,
descending into the deepest sulci and applied to
the cortical surface.
Arachnoid villi are the numerous projections to the venous sinus.
Aggregations of these villi at which CSF diffuses to venus sinuses called
arachnoid granulations.
Arachnoid granulations:
