Analysing a rock video.
Lucy.
They have
used an
establishing
shot as the
first shot to
show where
the video is
set and give
an idea of
what is
going to
happen in
the video. In
this shot we
can see that
there are
‘enemies’ on
each side of
what could
be a
battlefield, s
o the video
could be
about war.
The silhouetted figures against
the light blue background hide
the identities of who is standing
there. This could suggest that
they don’t want to be shown or
that the war will hide their
identities.
The video music video then
starts with an explosion
which happens in time with
the beat. This draws the
viewer in as the drama
then starts and the music
video becomes more
entertaining for the viewer.
This is a typical convention
of a rock video.
The video has a lot of close ups and
many montage shots within it, this
close is one of the cut aways that is
used until the lyrics actually come in.
The video cuts between people fight
and close ups of Hayley Williams
face, just like this shot.
The cutaways are typic
conventions of a music
video as it focuses on
the main singer and how
she is singing about
being in a war. This is
effective as it creates a
story line for the
audience to watch.
This shot is a typical convention
of a music video as the main
singer has been framed using
the rule of thirds. The singer is
also half way through lip syncing
a word. By the singer lip
syncing, it lets the viewer see
who is sing the song.
The only convention that the
video doesn't follow is making
the artist look ‘sexy’ or
‘luscious’ instead they have
made her look like something
from the future, I with white
eye lashes and flaming red
hair. By not using sex
appeal, it makes the video
stand out more as the artist
looks weird and in a way it
sort of intrigues the audience
as they haven’t seen anything
like this before.
