In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Question 1-
In my Video I have used lots of Genre characteristics . One example is that I have involved an element of performance in my Video, this works well as it is typical of a Rock Genre Video- for example Bon Jovi’s Living on a prayer Video is the band in concert. Although my performance section isn’t my artist in concert it is still as if she is ‘Rocking out’ being the typical Rock Artist. Also I have presented both the Artist and Character in my Video the stereotypical Rock chick as I have used props such as her drinking wine to create the whole Rock image. In one of the Pretty Reckless’ other Videos there is also shots of her drinking. The fact that my character smashes the glass is quite typical of the rock lifestyle too . Also as the lighting is quite dark its very grunge like matching the dark feel from the music , this is often used in Rock Video’s like Guns N Roses- November rain Video, this is very dark and dull empathising that dark, deep meaningful yet Rock Genre . In my Video I have created a very strong relationship between the lyrics and visuals . My Video coveys the meaning of the song . One example of this is when the lyrics say ‘taste me drink my soul’ and along side this is the character drinking wine. Also one section that is amplifying the lyrics of ‘your eyes, your eyes’ is the image of the mans eyes along side these lyrics, this is definitely a motif throughout the Video. I think the majority of my Video has an relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, on a whole the lyrics are driving the images we see on screen. This takes place in many Video’s now a day, one Artist that has used this is Evanescence also in the rock Genre she is singing the lyric’s ‘save me’ as she falls from the building. I think even the simplest of links are noticeable, but I have used many throughout the whole of my Video. ‘ Bon Jovi’ ‘ Guns N Roses’
My Video also has quite a strong relationship between the music and the visuals . I think the majority of Videos need this so that if the song is fast it keeps the energy up in what the audience is watching, or if it is slow it needs to calm down to empathise what is taking place on screen. As the beat in the song changes a new image comes on the screen in the correct timing . Its quite choppy in places therefore I have a range of shots that cut sharp from each other in time with the changes in the music. One good example of this is when the beats change very fast and I use a extreme close up of the Artists eyes flashing from colour to black and white. This really echo’s the crazy beats in the music to what the audience is seeing. Also at the end section of my video there is a range of different shots one after another, as the music changes from all different beats, keeping the energy up and giving the audience something that will relate to the song . Also as the song is getting a faster pace I use this to build up to the climax in my Video, the character smashes a glass and throws over a chair, this works really well in the way it is big, bold and crazy whilst the music is fast, choppy and loud . Then as the Music slows back down, I use this along side the acting in the Video too as when the music becomes softer and slower my character slides down the wall crying, the tone in the music really empathises her sadness and upset , its as if you are watching the whatever is on screen follow the Music's lead- creating a relationship between the two.
I have also reached the demands of the record label to a certain point as I have used many close up of my artist and quite intermit ones too. One example is when she is crawling down the stairs, it is in mid shot and then to close up it is quite a revealing shot and she is looking directly into the camera, therefore creating that bond between the audience and the artist , almost as if she is crawling towards them. However the only problem with this is that I didn’t really introduce the artist early enough , I should have really had her in one of the very first shots to create that relationship from the start especially when the singing comes in. Also there is close ups of the artists eyes too which works really well with this idea of the audience getting to know the artist and feeling as if they are connected to them . In the majority of the shots of my artist she is looking directly into the camera and in her performance section she often sings into the camera , almost as if she is singing to the audience, making it seem much more personal to the person at home watching. Another really good shot that demonstrates this is when the artist is laid on the floor reaching out to the camera, as if she is trying to reach out to the audience . Also one demand of the record label is that the artist creates a motif which recurs throughout the whole of there work . One way I think I have created this slightly is that on my Digi Pack , all the songs are quite dark and like a love song therefore the rose is like the constant motif as I have used it in each of my tasks, Digi Pack, Advert and Video.
Voyeurism is the idea of watching people and people watching other people . I think I have showed some signs of this in my Video, especially as I have used the motif of extreme close ups of the artists and characters eyes looking directly into the camera. This fits in with the demands of the record label too as again its creating that relationship with the audience and the artist as if she is looking directly at them and knows they are looking back at her. Also I have used many over the shoulder shots of the female character looking into the mirror therefore its almost like she is watching us watching her, whilst watching herself . Its as if she knows we are watching her. (Character looking in the mirror) Another example is again the mans eyes, he is looking at someone/something, whilst we are looking at him.
Conventions I have used- Candles, I used them to fit into the Rocky kind of look also making it look the typical Rock chicks bedroom- I used red and black so they would definitely fit into the style. The Rose which is the Motif of the Video, as it is surrounded by the leopard scarf and all the necklaces around the mirror making it have that rough, messy, edged look, almost gritty in the way there is so much going on. The Rose wine, fits in with the colour of the Video as well as tying in with the colour of the Rose. The drinking also goes along side the stereotypical Rock chick. Again all the cluster of perfume bottles and make up that fit into the style and make it look like the typical Rock chick room. The fact that there is so much detail in the shot makes it look more realistic. Filming my performance section the Music Studio worked really well as it looks very professional and realistic . All that I needed to do it make the artist look rock like, there for the black eyes, red lips, leather pants and all black costumes. The Music equipment that is in each of the shot from every angle makes it look really professional too- just what you would expect in a performance section of a Music Video.
The chunk of bangles is very typical of a Rock chick , it just adds to the attention of detail making it look much more realistic . This is my favourite shot in the whole of my Video, I think its very realistic and creates a huge impact to the storyline going on in the Video. For the same reasons as above I love this shot, it creates such a big dramatic impact on the video . As the music is quite soft at this point in the song and the movement is slowed right down then all of sudden this shot appears and kind of shocks the audience in a way as she is looking right at you, with such a upset look on her face.
