Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a genetic disorder that affects motor neurons in the spinal cord and impairs movement. There are five types of SMA defined by when symptoms first manifest - ranging from before birth for type 0 to early adulthood for type 4. Common symptoms include weak and floppy limbs, respiratory issues, and poor motor skills. While SMA is progressive, early diagnosis and treatment including medication, physical therapy, and assistive devices can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
