Samuel Butler was a 17th century English poet and novelist best known for his satirical poem "Hudibras". The poem was published in three parts between 1663-1678 and used a mock-heroic style to satirize the Puritans and those involved in the English Civil War. It follows the adventures of Sir Hudibras, a Presbyterian knight, and his squire Ralpho as they encounter various absurd situations that ridicule Puritan beliefs and hypocrisy. The poem was greatly influenced by Miguel de Cervantes' novel "Don Quizote" and became very popular after its publication.
