Samuel Butler was an English farmer's son born in 1612 who is best remembered for his satirical poem "Hudibras". The poem is a mock heroic narrative written in three parts between 1663-1678 that parodies Puritan fanaticism through the adventures of the knight Hudibras and his squire Ralpho. Though initially popular for its attacks on Puritans, the poem offers a more complex satire and was greatly influential being one of the first great works of English poetic satire.
