An introduction to Game Sense
- 2. Welcome parents of 5D 5D’s PDPHE class This semester we will be using a Game Sense approach to teach your children in PE Classes.
- 3. Game Sense is a relatively new teaching approach (Towns, 2002). The students learn through focussing on the game, rather than the specific skill or technique (Towns, 2002). Game Sense is an approach using games to teach students fundamental skills(Light, 2006).
- 4. By implementing a Game Sense approach to teaching students fundamental skills, they are able to learn fundamental skills in an enjoyable context (Towns, 2002). Game Sense is an effective way to develop skills, as the techniques are learnt in a ‘real’ game situation (Towns, 2002). By focusing on the game, children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding of the game being played (Towns, 2002).
- 5. A Game Sense approach allows for children to learn valuable skills without even realising it. Children are able to use the skills they have learnt more practically, as the skills are learnt in a game setting. Game Sense is not only a teaching method, but also an approach for coaching children. This can be effective in teaching students strategies and tactics of the game.
- 6. Students are able to learn fundamental movement skills through an enjoyable environment (Board of Studies, 2007) By learning strategies and tactics about a game, it could invoke students to use decision making and problem solving skills (Board of Studies, 2007) Through enjoying the activities using a game sense approach, it could influence students positively in having an active lifestyle (Board of Studies, 2007).
