GAME SENSE APPROACH
Teaching Games for Understanding

WHAT IS GAME SENSE
APPROACH?
Games sense approach has been established as a
student centered method when teaching PDHPE as
it enables them to develop their own sense of
understanding and skill development (Curry, 2011).
In saying this, students become actively involved in
PE lessons as there is a focus on the game rather
than the skills associated with the particular game at
hand
HOW DO WE USE GAME SENSE
APPROACH?
Game sense approach is used within PE lessons as
a tool to further engage students and enhance their
overall development in relation to critical thinking
and understanding of games (Pill, 2013).
Furthermore, the use of game sense approach is
established to coincide with the PDHPE syllabus
(Board of Studies, 2007) and the skills of moving,
problem-solving, communicating, interacting, and
decision-making, which are crucial to student
development.
STRENGTHS OF USING GAME SENSE
APPROACH
Game sense approach is an effective method of
teaching PDHPE as it allows for sport and games to
be modified in a a particular way that allows for the
inclusion of all students regardless of their sporting
abilities, age, gender and overall motivation levels.
 Ways in which games can be modified to suit
individual student needs is by using non threatening
equipment (plastic striking tools and softer balls),
and also modifying specific game rules to ensure
game understanding and student equality.
BENEFITS OF GAME SENSE
APPROACH
Game sense approach has been established is such
a way as to allow for game modification to take
place. Benefits of game modification include, but are
not limited to: changing equipment, changing and
implementing new rules, developing game strategies
and modifying activities to cater to various learning
needs.
This approach will have a positive impact upon all
students involved as they are engaging in an equal
and supportive learning environment.
