This document summarizes a study that examined the impact of teaching critical thinking skills on students' ability to understand complex information systems implementation problems. The study involved two sections of a Systems Analysis and Design course. One section received instruction on basic critical thinking concepts using a template to guide their analysis of a case study, while the control section did not receive this instruction. Students who received critical thinking instruction performed better in analyzing the complex case study about an IT project failure. The results provide preliminary evidence that teaching critical thinking can improve students' understanding of complex systems problems.

As noted by Dirkx (2006):
The demand for evidence-based research (EBR) in education has evoked considerable debate regarding the nature of knowledge practitioners hold, how they come to know, and the sociopolitical contexts in which that knowledge is generated. Proponents of EBR such as Michael Feuer stress the need for research that validly identifies solutions to important problems of educational practice. Critics such as Elizabeth St. Pierre decry such approaches to research on practice as epistemologically inappropriate and oblivious to their political and moral implications. Both positions illuminate important dimensions of improving practice, but what works seems to get lost in the rhetoric. In this article, the author suggests that we in adult education take seriously the question of what works in practice by developing a knowledge base grounded in research methods and strategies that give voice to the particularities of practice contexts, what he refers to as the "insider perspective." (p. 273)

In this unit, we explore the importance of management information systems (MIS). MIS have several
components such as data, information, hardware, software, processes, and human elements that provide
organizations with the tools for decision-making (Kroenke & Boyle, 2017).
Before we start a discussion about information systems (IS), let’s first examine what a computer system is.
Computers perform a number of tasks (e.g., calculations, word processing, programming, application
development). A computer consists of some basic components such as hardware-like memory chips; a hard
drive and motherboard, which contain the central processing unit; and software, which tells the computer what
to do. There are other hardware components such as a monitor, which helps us to see what the computer is
doing, and a keyboard and a mouse, which help us to input data or tell the computer what we want to do. We
can apply all of this to better understand an IS. An IS contains five important components: hardware,
software, data, procedures, and people (Figure1) (Kroenke & Boyle, 2017).

An IS contains hardware such as personal computers, tablets, servers, and server farms. It also includes
software such as operating systems and applications, which tell the hardware what to do. An IS uses data
that can be organized into useful information, such as reports, and the IS uses procedures, such as
instructions, to help users understand how to complete tasks (e.g., saving a file, printing a report). Lastly, an
IS is used by people who input data and evaluate that data. Let’s use a database as an example. The
database is stored using hardware, and the interface for the database is the software. A database contains
data that can be organized in some way (e.g., queries, reports), and there are procedures that instruct the
users of the system on how to use the database (Kroenke & Boyle, 2017).
Compared to IS, information technology (IT) contains four components, and these four components are used

Abstract
The aim of this research essay is to examine the structural
nature of theory in Information Systems. Despite the impor-
tance of theory, questions relating to its form and structure
are neglected in comparison with questions relating to episte-
mology. The essay addresses issues of causality, explanation,
prediction, and generalization that underlie an understanding
of theory. A taxonomy is proposed that classifies information
systems theories with respect to the manner in which four
central goals are addressed: analysis, explanation, predic-
tion, and prescription. Five interrelated types of theory are
distinguished: (1) theory for analyzing, (2) theory for ex-
plaining, (3) theory for predicting, (4) theory for explaining
and predicting, and (5) theory for design and action.
Examples illustrate the nature of each theory type. The appli-
cability of the taxonomy is demonstrated by classifying a
sample of journal articles. The paper contributes by showing
that multiple views of theory exist and by exposing the
assumptions underlying different viewpoints. In addition, it
is suggested that the type of theory under development can
influence the choice of an epistemological approach. Support

is given for the legitimacy and value of each theory type. The
building of integrated bodies of theory that encompass all
theory types is advocated.

The aim of this essay is to examine the structural nature of
theory in the discipline of Information Systems. There are a
number of grounds for believing that this meta-theoretical
exploration is both necessary and timely. Calls continue for
“good theory” in IS (Watson 2001) and the development of
our “own” theory (Weber 2003). Despite the recognition of
the need for theory development, however, there is limited
discussion in IS forums of what theory means in IS and what
form contributions to knowledge can take.

How would you write a mixed methods procedure section for your proposal or study? Up until this point, we have considered collected quantitative data and qualitative data. We have not discussed “mixing” or combining the two forms of data in a study. We can start with the assumption that both forms of data provide different types of information (open-ended data in the case of qualitative and closed-ended data in the case of quantitative). If we further assume that each type of data collection has both limitations and strengths, we can consider how the strengths can be combined to develop a stronger understanding of the research problem or questions (and, as well, overcome the limitations of each). In a sense, more insight into a problem is to be gained from mixing or integration of the quantitative and qualitative data. This “mixing” or integrating of data, it can be argued, provides a stronger understanding of the problem or question than either by itself. Mixed methods research, therefore, is simply “mining” the databases more by integrating them. This idea is at the core of a new methodology called “mixed methods research.”
Conveying the nature of mixed methods research and its essential characteristics needs to begin a good mixed methods procedure. Start with the assumption that mixed methods is a methodology in research and that the readers need to be educated as to the basic intent and definition of the design, the reasons for choosing the procedure, and the value it will lend to a study. Then, decide on a mixed methods design to use. There are several from which to choose; consider the different possibilities and decide which one is best for your proposed study. With this choice in hand, discuss the data collection, the data analysis, and the data interpretation, discussion, and validation procedures within the context of the design. Finally, end with a discussion of potential ethical issues that need to be anticipated in the study, and suggest an outline for writing the final study. These are all standard methods procedures, and they are framed in this chapter as they apply to mixed methods research. Table 10.1 shows a checklist of the mixed methods procedures addressed in this chapter.
COMPONENTS OF MIXED METHODS PROCEDURES
Mixed methods research has evolved into a set of procedures that proposal developers and study designers can use in planning a mixed methods study. In 2003, the Handbook of Mixed Methods in the Social and Behavior Sciences (Tashakkori & Teddlie, 2003) was published (and later added to in a second edition, see Tashakkori & Teddlie, 2010), providing a comprehensive overview of this approach. An argumentative essay takes a position on an issue and argues for that position using evidence from sources and logical reasoning to
support the position. It is one of the most common forms of writing anywhere, and you will use it extensively in college.
Read: Chapter 10 on Argument, and review Chapter 26 on using sources in writing.
The first thing to do is pick a topic and develop a research plan. A research plan worksheet is available on eLearn. Once you pick a
topic that interests you, list questions concerning the issue that you are interested in answering. Once you develop a list of research
questions, then pick a single question to respond to in your paper. Your paper is the answer to the question.
A research question must have at least 2 reasonable, supportable answers. In other words, someone must be able to reasonably
disagree with you.
Once you develop your research question, then you do the research (annotated bibliography) to gather information in order to answer
your question and support your position on the topic.
We will discuss paper organization and source use in class after the annotated bibliography is complete.
III. Presentation (50 points, 4/28 or 4/30)
You will give a brief presentation of your paper on one of the presentation days the last week of class (we will sign up for these times
in the coming weeks). Your presentation should be brief, 3-5 minutes and should include a Power Point type of visual aid that
illustrates the topic you have chosen, your position on the topic, why the topic is important, and your evidence to support your
position. Your goal with the presentation is to convince your classmates that your position on the issue is the best position.
Presentation tip: Do not read your power point presentation. This makes for a very boring presentation since everyone can read.
Power points should provide interesting points, lists, or images that you talk about to the class.

In this unit, we explore the importance of management information systems (MIS). MIS have several
components such as data, information, hardware, software, processes, and human elements that provide
organizations with the tools for decision-making (Kroenke & Boyle, 2017).
Before we start a discussion about information systems (IS), let’s first examine what a computer system is.
Computers perform a number of tasks (e.g., calculations, word processing, programming, application
development). A computer consists of some basic components such as hardware-like memory chips; a hard
drive and motherboard, which contain the central processing unit; and software, which tells the computer what
to do. There are other hardware components such as a monitor, which helps us to see what the computer is
doing, and a keyboard and a mouse, which help us to input data or tell the computer what we want to do. We
can apply all of this to better understand an IS. An IS contains five important components: hardware,
software, data, procedures, and people (Figure1) (Kroenke & Boyle, 2017).

Abstract
The aim of this research essay is to examine the structural
nature of theory in Information Systems. Despite the impor-
tance of theory, questions relating to its form and structure
are neglected in comparison with questions relating to episte-
mology. The essay addresses issues of causality, explanation,
prediction, and generalization that underlie an understanding
of theory. A taxonomy is proposed that classifies information
systems theories with respect to the manner in which four
central goals are addressed: analysis, explanation, predic-
tion, and prescription. Five interrelated types of theory are
distinguished: (1) theory for analyzing, (2) theory for ex-
plaining, (3) theory for predicting, (4) theory for explaining
and predicting, and (5) theory for design and action.
Examples illustrate the nature of each theory type. The appli-
cability of the taxonomy is demonstrated by classifying a
sample of journal articles. The paper contributes by showing
that multiple views of theory exist and by exposing the
assumptions underlying different viewpoints. In addition, it
is suggested that the type of theory under development can
influence the choice of an epistemological approach. Support

is given for the legitimacy and value of each theory type. The
building of integrated bodies of theory that encompass all
theory types is advocated.

I. Annotated Bibliography (100 points, Due 4/7 by 11:59 PM)
An annotated bibliography is a collection of your research on a particular issue. It includes source citations and a summary of the
source. Your annotated bibliography will contain at least five (5) sources. All the sources MUST be located through the library. They
may be print or electronic sources, but they must be accessed through the library resources.
Read: Chapter 24 on Doing Research, Chapter 27 on using MLA citation formats, and Chapter 26 on using sources paying close
attention to the discussion of summary on page 496.
An example of an Annotated bibliography is posted on eLearn.
I will go over in class the databases I recommend for this assignment. I suggest you use them. It will make your work here less
difficult.
II. Argumentative Research Paper (100 points, Draft due 4/16, Final due 4/30 11:59PM)
An argumentative essay takes a position on an issue and argues for that position using evidence from sources and logical reasoning to
support the position. It is one of the most common forms of writing anywhere, and you will use it extensively in college.
Read: Chapter 10 on Argument, and review Chapter 26 on using sources in writing.
The first thing to do is pick a topic and develop a research plan. A research plan worksheet is available on eLearn. Once you pick a
topic that interests you, list questions concerning the issue that you are interested in answering. Once you develop a list of research
questions, then pick a single question to respond to in your paper. Your paper is the answer to the question.
A research question must have at least 2 reasonable, supportable answers. In other words, someone must be able to reasonably
disagree with you.
Once you develop your research question, then you do the research (annotated bibliography) to gather information in order to answer
your question and support your position on the topic.
We will discuss paper organization and source use in class after the annotated bibliography is complete.
III. Presentation (50 points, 4/28 or 4/30)
You will give a brief presentation of your paper on one of the presentation days the last week of class (we will sign up for these times
in the coming weeks). Your presentation should be brief, 3-5 minutes and should include a Power Point type of visual aid that
illustrates the topic you have chosen, your position on the topic, why the topic is important, and your evidence to support your
position. Your goal with the presentation is to convince your classmates that your position on the issue is the best position.
Presentation tip: Do not read your power point presentation. This makes for a very boring presentation since everyone can read.
Power points should provide interesting points, lists, or images that you talk about to the class.
