VMware: Innovate and Thrive in the Mobile-Cloud EraVMware
Journey to IT as a Service
Deliver new products and services faster. Get closer to customers. Make increasingly mobile workers more productive. The pressure on your business to innovate has never been greater. But is your existing IT infrastructure capable of advancing your business goals?
As we enter the mobile-cloud era, your IT model must be able to accommodate more users, more applications, and more data. According to IDC, delivering the third platform for IT growth and innovation1—beyond mainframes and client-server—requires investment in cloud computing, social, mobile, and big-data technologies. It also means making fundamental changes to your IT operations to enable self-service access to information and applications—anytime, anywhere, on any device.

Organizations need a plan for moving from their current state toward cloud models based on standardized and consolidated platforms, shared services, self-service and metered use. How can organizations get started on the evolution to cloud computing? This webcast explores how enterprises can create a roadmap to cloud computing, including developing the business case; financial models; governance considerations; security considerations; organizational, policy and process considerations; and technical architecture considerations.
Get your people ready For Cloud ComputingITpreneurs
Cloud computing is changing the way we work and the way we engage with our customer. Virtually every organization is now exploring their potential for cloud computing, searching for a higher agility, scalability and even new business opportunities.
With the help of cloud computing working becomes more socially interactive and unconstrained to location and time. However, many organizations are still struggling to adopt cloud computing to their full advantage, not anticipating the impact it has on the complete organization. Fear and uncertainty, as a result of a lack of a basic understanding of cloud computing often provokes internal resistance to change.
To help corporations overcome these challenges ITpreneurs, together with a review board of industry-leading organizations (including ING Group, Cisco, EMC, HP, IBM and Virtual Clarity) developed the Cloud Certification Program for IT professionals.
DataCore’s Fifth Annual State of Software-Defined Storage (SDS) Survey Reveals Surprising Lack of Spending on Big Data, Object Storage and OpenStack. In contrast, more than half of organizations polled (52 percent) look to extend the life of existing storage assets and future-proof their IT infrastructure with SDS in 2015.
On the other hand, this year’s report reveals several major business drivers for implementing Software-Defined Storage. 52 percent of respondents expect SDS will extend the life of existing storage assets and future-proof their storage infrastructure, enabling them to easily absorb new technologies. Close to half of respondents look to SDS to avoid hardware lock-in from storage manufacturers, while lowering hardware costs by allowing them to shop among several competing suppliers. Operationally, they see SDS simplifying management of different classes of storage by automating frequent or complex operations. This is notable in comparison with earlier surveys, as these results portray a sharp increase in the recognition of the economic benefits generated by SDS (reduced CAPEX), complementing the OPEX savings referenced in prior years.
Other surprises include: while flash technology penetration expanded it is still absent in 28 percent of the cases and 16 percent reported that it did not meet application acceleration expectations. Also interesting is that 21 percent reported that highly touted hyper-converged systems did not perform as required or did not integrate well within their infrastructure. On the other hand, Software-Defined Storage and storage virtualization are deemed very urgent now, with 72 percent of organizations making important investments in these technologies throughout 2015. 81 percent also expect similar levels of spending on Software-Defined Storage technologies that will be incorporated within server SANs / virtual SANs and converged storage solutions.
Software-Defined Data Center Case Study – Financial Institution and VMwareVMware
In this case study, a large financial institution engaged the VMware software-defined data center team to create a three-to-five year forward-looking strategy document for its IT department. The overriding business driver for the institution was the need for a drastic reduction in IT OpEx Costs, at least a 50% OpEx annualized cost reduction over a three-year period. This presentation explains how VMware Accelerate Advisory Services established the necessary strategy, including a look at the “cloud reference architecture,” which addressed the: application plane, control plane, infrastructure layer, and management plan.

Editor's Notes
Key Points:Using this framework we map to specific solution areas that VMware is focused on (walk through the layers and functional areas) and that are important in virtualized and cloud environments. At first glance some of these areas will be new (vApp Packaging) while others (provisioning, service desk) may seem similar to a traditional view of management, but as you double click in these spaces you will find that we are focused on functionality that is both critical to and takes advantage of managing in a virtualized or cloud environment. In some areas (compliance & security, performance, service desk) we will dramatically redefine how management is done. We will be wrapping our solution content, product roadmaps and GTM strategy around this framework.VMware Infrastructure and Operations Management solutions enable IT to create a zero-touch, compliant infrastructure. Native management is designed-in to the virtualized and public, private, and hybrid cloud infrastructure to help deliver self-service through policy-driven control.VMware Application Management solutions enable IT to quickly, accurately, and confidently transition applications to virtualization and the cloud, mapping dependencies, assuring application portability & performance, and establishing service contracts with the infrastructure. VMware End-User Computing Management allows IT teams to provision & deploy desktops rapidly, manage workstation images simply, and deliver virtualized applications to desktop.VMware IT Business Management solutions allow IT and service providers to confidently deliver new levels of self-service while ensuring these new services are automatically governed with appropriate business and process-level controls. Self-service without business governance can lead to sprawl, cost, licensing, chargeback, and security issues.
Gartner praises VMware for: Far-reaching virtualization strategy that includes enabling cloud computing, new application architectures and broader management Technology leadership and innovation High customer satisfaction Large installed base (especially in the Global 2000), and rapid growth of service providers planning to use VMware (vCloud initiative) While questioning competitors for: Offering "Limited innovation and reactive strategy in a rapidly evolving market" Facing an "Uphill battle breaking into a very strong VMware installed base, especially in large enterprises" Failing to link virtualization and Cloud, offering an "evolving strategy and road map with respect to virtualization's tie with cloud computing" While delivering a product with a "Single point of failure/planned downtime in parent operating system"

VMware’s pioneering security solutions are the vShield family of products. vShield solutions secure the edge of the virtual datacenter, protect virtualized application deployments from network-based threats, and streamline antivirus protection for all VMs by offloading AV processing to dedicated security VMs.vShield Edge protects the perimeter of a virtual data center, and provides services such as DHCP (Dynamic Host Config Protocol), NAT (Network Address Translation), Firewall, VPN and Web Load Balancing.vShield App protects application deployments from network based threats. It allows for flexible and elastic groupings of VMs based on business needs such as PCI, HIPAA, DMZ deployments. vShield App extends the basic vShield Zones capability that is included as part of vSphere advanced onward SKUs, by adding flexible VM grouping by user defined policies and supporting vCenter container based policies.vShield Endpoint enables efficient, offloaded AV processing. Partners such as Trend Micro, Symantec and McAfee will ship the security virtual machines that integrate with vShield Endpoint for offloaded AV processing. vShield Manager is the centralized deployment, management, reporting, logging, tracking and integration (REST based APIs) for all vShield products.
