2. The African lion is the biggest
cat in Africa. He is known as
the “King of the Beasts.” You
can tell he is the King because
of his mane. The male (boy
lion) grows to 550 pounds. The
female (girl lion) is much
smaller, but she does most of
the hunting. They are like us
because they live in families
that are called “prides.”

3. The gorilla is the largest of all
the apes. The male (boy
gorilla) can grow to be 400
pounds. Their skeleton looks
a lot like ours, but they
usually walk on all fours with
their knuckles. They live in
families with a “boss” male.
He is called a Silverback.
They sleep in nests like birds.
They make a nest out of dry
grass.

4. The ostrich is the largest bird
in the whole world, but he
does not fly. They are very,
very big. They are taller than
a man at eight feet tall. They
can run really fast, 40 miles
per hour. Years ago when
hats were real popular, they
were raised on farms for their
feathers.

5. The giraffe is the tallest animal in
the whole world! Do you know
how many bones it has in its
neck? Just seven like you and
me. When the female (girl
giraffe) has a baby it is as big as a
full grown man, 6 feet tall. There
is only one giraffe, but they have
seven different spot patterns
depending on where they live.

6. The African elephant is the largest
land animal in the world. He has a
smaller cousin that lives in India.
The elephant is very big, but also
very gentle. He does not have any
enemies except for man. He can
grow to thirteen feet tall and weigh
over 15,000 pounds. That is as
much as four cars! Their nose and
top lip are together to make their
trunk. Their trunk is very useful. It
has about 150,000 muscle units in
it.
