Introduction
Mahatma Gandhi was a visionary who made an epoch making contribution for socio, political, economic and cultural transformation of not only India but also the world. His public life began with peaceful civil disobedience in the Indian community's struggle against racism and for civil rights of non-white population in South Africa. After his return from South Africa to India, he organized all sections of society, from budding industrialists, educated intelligentsia, women and children to poor farmers and labourers to protest against oppressive British regime and widespread discrimination. Assuming leadership of the Indian National Congress, Gandhiji led nationwide campaigns for the alleviation of poverty, for fight against merciless taxation of poor peasants, for the liberation of women, for communal harmony and democratic rights of ethnic groups, for an end to barbaric practice of untouchability and caste discrimination, and for the economic self-sufficiency of the nation, but above all, for Swaraj (home Rule) the independence of India from foreign domination. Gandhi famously led the civil disobedience movement against the salt tax imposed by the British Administration with the 400 kilometer (250 miles) Dandi Salt March in 1930. He masterminded the Quit India Movement in 1942.

India is the largest democracy in the world. these challenges and hence restoring the true democracy in India. India is the largest democracy in the world. In the last 7 decades it has worked successfully well to some extent. These people do not feel themselves participative in the democratic process. You may ask why it is so. You have already read in earlier unit that democracy means ‘government of the people, for the people, and by the people’. It means democracy is not limited to just a process of election, but also fulfilling social and economic aspirations of the people. In India we keep on debating these various aspects of democracy and its achievements and challenges. For a better understanding of the same, we discuss this in this lesson. Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. 14. Social Choice 1970 – Published Collective choice & Social welfare. He offered an answer to Kenneth Arrow’s “impossibility theorem”. Arrow argued that it is impossible to devise a voting system with an outcome which is both rational and egalitarian. Arrow had, in effect, said farewell to democracy. Sen indicated that the case for democracy wasn't lost and that there is a lot of middle ground in the analyses of choice.
