 Nirendranath Chakraborty was born on 19
October 1924 in Bengal.
 Nirendranath Chakraborty won the Sahitya
Academy Award in 1974 for the book of poems
Ulanga Raja (The Naked King).
 Nirendranath Chakraborty was awarded an
honorary Doctor of Science degree, in 2007 by the
University of Calcutta.

 Amalkanti is a poem which was originally written in Bengali by
Nirendranath Chakrabarti
 Amalkanti is a very meaningful poem.
 “Amalkanti” describes the incidents which occurred in the life of Amalkanti
and as observed by the poet.
 Children often discuss among each other about what each of them wants to be
when grown-up. All the children wanted to follow the conventional
professions.
 Of all the children Amalkanti had a strange desire, he wanted to be sunlight.
 All the children achieved , more or less, whatever they wanted to be in their
future life.
 However, the desire Amalkanti to become sunlight was not realized.
 The poem can be perceived in more than one way.
 It can be said that Amalkanti worked in a dark and that did not realized his
dream.
 On the other hand, it can also be said that by working for a printer, he became
(sort of sunlight) by spreading knowledge via books.
 Amalkanti was friend and classmate of
the poet . He was weak and careless
students often he would go to school
late and never bothered to complete
school work the poet has revealed the
fact that Amalkanti could not tell three
forms of the word whenever the teacher
asked him, he started to look out of the
window he looked confused and
speachless .
The poet makes the fact clear that classmates of
their class work and ambitious and alert they
had their goes to be teachers, doctors, or
lawyers but Amalkanti was different.
He did not help any aim or carrier plane but he
was always wanted be sunlight so that he
might enlighten years passed, most of the
students settle down. Some of the students
settle down, some of them became doctors,
some teachers, and some lawyers etc.
The poet said that Amalkanti failed
to achieved his goal. He couldn’t
become sunlight, the person bring
hope and light in any bodies life.
Misfortunately he had to work in a
semic dark room as press worker.
He was enable to enlighten even
his own life.
