The Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation was formed in 1980 as an extension of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the first African American sorority, to continue their century of service and support for education. Through programs like ESP (Excellent Scholarly Performance), the Foundation has awarded over $1.7 million in scholarships and grants to students and organizations worldwide. It has grown into a multi-million dollar foundation thanks to contributions from Alpha Kappa Alpha members and other supporters.

3. History
Formed in 1980, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation, Inc. is an extension of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the first African-American Greek letter organization. Through EAF, Alpha Kappa Alpha’s century long history of service and vision to charitably support education continues to flourish. With the assistance of the Foundation, ESP, Excellent Scholarly Performance, is awarded in communities worldwide. Contributions, gifts and endowed funding from members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., in addition to our corporate and private supporters, have enabled EAF to grow into a multi-million dollar foundation.
More than 1.7 million dollars has been awarded in scholarships, fellowships, grants, and funding for thousands of students and a number of community organizations thanks to the generosity of foundation supporters.

4. Milestones of Growth
1991
Awards first mini-grants. To date, the Foundation has distributed more than $200,000 to individuals and organizations to support local community service projects.
1996
Diversifies and expands its donor base by participating in the National Black United Federation of Charities & the Combined Federal Campaign, a milestone event in the Foundation's history.
EAF awards first fellowships. Conceived to support individuals involved in scholarly pursuits at all stages of life, fellowships help EAF realize its mission of supporting lifelong learning.
1998
Awards first Youth P.A.C., Partners Accessing Capital scholarships. Awards are given by undergraduate Sorors to qualified undergraduate members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. The program places EAF into an exciting trend in philanthropy by bringing young people into the award and grant-making process.
2003
Surpasses $2M General Fund Balance. This benchmark solidifies EAF’s position as one of the largest foundations administered by African-American women.
2007
Establishes ESP, Excellent Scholarly Performance and launches new projects for EAF funding under the leadership of EAF President Barbara A. McKinzie.

6. Scholarships & Fellowships
EAF carries out its mission to “promote lifelong learning” in three ways, through the scholarships, fellowships, and community assistance awards. Academic scholarships are awarded based on merit or financial need to qualified undergraduate and graduate students. With the exception of the P.A.C. award, consideration is given to potential candidates without regard to gender. P.A.C. recipients must be active undergraduate members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
The Helen Cromer Cooper Fellowship for Non-Violent Alternatives to Conflict and the Dr. Dorri Phipps Fellowship are the two EAF Fellowships that are awarded during even numbered years to help fund purposeful projects and research. Recipients do not have to be enrolled in an academic institution in order to be considered for fellowship awards.

7. Community Assistance Awards Community Assistance Awards support initiatives designed and implemented by individuals who are closely involved with their community and are familiar with its challenges; as a result, funds are dispersed in a manner that most effectively impacts the community.
Projects eligible for financial assistance must address one of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.’s Heart of ESP, Extraordinary Service Program economic program platforms:

Community projects can be implemented in cooperation with other community service organizations that are already helping to make an impact in specific civic, educational or human service program or project.
