Estimating Human Pose from Occluded Images (ACCV 2009)Jia-Bin Huang
We address the problem of recovering 3D human pose from single 2D images, in which the pose estimation problem is formulated as a direct nonlinear regression from image observation to 3D joint positions. One key issue that has not been addressed in the literature is how to estimate 3D pose when humans in the scenes are partially or heavily occluded. When occlusions occur, features extracted from image observations (e.g., silhouettes-based shape features, histogram of oriented gradient, etc.) are seriously corrupted, and consequently the regressor (trained on un-occluded images) is unable to estimate pose states correctly. In this paper, we present a method that is capable of handling occlusions using sparse signal representations, in which each test sample is represented as a compact linear combination of training samples. The sparsest solution can then be efficiently obtained by solving a convex optimization problem with certain norms (such as l1-norm). The corrupted test image can be recovered with a sparse linear combination of un-occluded training images which can then be used for estimating human pose correctly (as if no occlusions exist). We also show that the proposed approach implicitly performs relevant feature selection with un-occluded test images. Experimental results on synthetic and real data sets bear out our theory that with sparse representation 3D human pose can be robustly estimated when humans are partially or heavily occluded in the scenes.

This presentation outlines strategies developed in a tutor/mentor program I led in Chicago from 1975 to 1992, and a second program that I led in Chicago from 1993 to 2011.
The steps are sequential, and concurrent. For instance, as an out-of-school-time program, youth are volunteers, as are tutors and mentors. A program must continuously work to attract and retain student and volunteer participation.
These are the first two steps. If students don't attend regularly, and return for multiple years, the other steps don't reach them.
This and other presentations created since the 1990s are intended to help leaders, volunteers, donors and policy-makers build and sustain, comprehensive, long-term, mentor-rich youth learning programs in every high poverty area of Chicago and other places.

2010‐2011 Application Information
United Way’s Youth United Way Program provides a forum for local youth to develop leadership skills and
demonstrate the importance of youth civic involvement as a key component of community change. Their
mission is to expand the leadership qualities of students while contributing to Marion County by volunteering,
fundraising, and making a positive impact within already existing United Way initiatives and funded programs.
The initiative allows for juniors and seniors in high school to serve as volunteers and leaders. As a member of
the class you will be able to elect your own officers, participate in meetings, fundraisers and the United Way
allocation process. You will also have the opportunity to serve on the Campaign Cabinet as well as participate
in Day of Caring. Youth United Way serve as a volunteer group for United Way and the local community.
Some activities might include, but are not limited to: learning about Marion County, giving feedback on
community issues as it relates to teenagers, volunteering, running fundraising campaigns, website design and
connecting with community leaders.
Applicants need to be entering into their junior year of high school in the fall of 2010. Students applying
should be responsible, caring, and motivated by experience and learning. We do require a minimum of a 2.5
grade point average and leadership experience is not a necessity. In fact, we are interested in students who
have great potential, but have not yet had the opportunity to lead. We are looking for students who want to
get involved in their community and make a difference.
There is a monthly meeting requirement that is held on the first Monday of the Month from 6:00‐8:30 pm,
with a welcome reception in June and a Saturday orientation held in August. Attendance and involvement at
events and specific volunteer projects is also expected. The deadline for the application is May 7, 2010. For
