Giving to religion a changing landscapeSheldon Bryan
Giving to religious organizations as a percentage of total charitable donations has declined since 1970, dropping from 44.4% to 32% between 1970 and 2011. This is partly due to declining church membership and attendance, especially among young adults. However, those who do attend religious services regularly are more likely to donate to both religious and secular causes than those who do not attend. Religious organizations can improve charitable giving by focusing more on stewardship education through sermons and classes, utilizing modern donation technologies, increasing financial transparency, and shifting their paradigm to focus more on cultivating donors.

This document summarizes research showing that investing in high-quality early childhood education and care can significantly reduce future crime and incarceration rates. It cites studies finding that preschool programs and home visiting initiatives have led to less abuse and neglect, fewer behavioral issues, improved school performance, higher graduation rates, and large decreases in criminal behavior - with participants up to 46% less likely to be imprisoned by age 40. Law enforcement leaders support expanding access to early education as a cost-effective strategy to improve public safety by preventing crime.
The Me Fine Foundation was created to provide financial assistance to families caring for children receiving cancer treatment. It holds fundraising events in North Carolina that raised $200,000 in 2015, assisting 184 families. A situational analysis found strengths like community events and passionate volunteers, but also weaknesses such as an outdated website and lack of social media presence. To increase donations, the analysis recommends improving the digital presence through tactics used successfully by similar foundations like Susan G. Komen and St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
Creating Engaging Communications for Non-ProfitsAction Graphics
Today's marketing communications are very different than 15, 10, even 5 years ago! For many non-profits, marketing communications go hand in hand with fundraising communications. In this workshop, we will discuss using a targeted, integrated, and measurable approach to your communications to further both your business and fundraising objectives and create a more engaged audience.
The document summarizes a study that found donor motivations for charitable giving vary based on income and education level rather than region. Lower-income donors were more motivated by helping meet basic needs or helping the poor help themselves, while middle-income donors wanted to make the world better. Higher-income donors cited motivations like those with more should help those with less or making their community better. Non-profits are advised to tailor fundraising messages and strategies based on understanding donor motivations related to factors like income rather than just geography.
The Center conducts community-based prevention research to improve public health and prevent disease, especially for populations with poor health outcomes. It partners with various local organizations in Flint and Genesee County. One of its main projects is the HOPE Project, which uses peer education to prevent sexually transmitted infections like HIV/AIDS among 18-24 year olds. The HOPE Project involves HOPE Parties at homes where young people can learn about healthy sexuality from a certified educator. Participants are then invited to connect with the project online through social media or its website, hopegenesee.org, which has discussion forums and resources about HIV/AIDS and healthy sexuality.
The organization has seen an increase in demand for their peer support programs for children coping with illness and death due to the challenging times. Peer support helps breakdown isolation from loss and grief, as children who receive support are less likely to attempt suicide, abuse substances, or develop behavioral disorders. However, donations have decreased due to the economic downturn so the organization needs additional support to continue providing free services to help children through grief and prevent future problems.
The document provides an overview of charitable giving patterns among African Americans in Kansas City based on a study conducted by the Black Community Fund. Some key findings include:
- Volunteerism is strongly linked to monetary donations, with those who volunteer more likely to donate to that organization.
- Donations are primarily given to churches, alma maters, and youth/social services. Higher income donors above $2,500 annually are more likely to budget donations.
- Nonprofits should demonstrate outcomes and transparency to attract donors, explicitly showing community benefits, especially when messaging men.
- Social media, volunteers' networks, and websites are the most effective ways for nonprofits to create awareness and inspire giving among

2. the facts are
disturbing
Statistics from the Maryland Adolescent Survey show that
Harford County ranks highest in the state for the rate of
substance abuse in every category on the survey with the
exception of crack. The survey is divided into age groups, drug
type, and frequency of use. The frequency of use indicated
by those surveyed as “in the past 30 days,” indicates regular
substance abuse not just casual use or experimentation. The
frightening statistics for regular substance abuse in all age
groups surveyed is that these young people are using drugs
and alcohol at a significantly higher rate than the rest of the
state, including regular abuse of beer/wine coolers, liquor,
marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy, heroin, and inhalants.
The Close Foundation helps troubled youth with nowhere
left to turn. These youth find hope through the programs we
support, and a chance to change their lives. The Foundation
supports programs that assist young people, whether they
are trying to overcome substance abuse, are in conflict with
the law, or are emotionally troubled and struggling due to
other factors such as family issues. These youth would be lost
without the help of the Close Foundation.

5. our mission
As the population of Harford County increases, so does
the number of young people engaged in criminal behavior
as well as drug and alcohol abuse. These young people
are our children, nieces and nephews, grandchildren, our
neighbor’s child, our employees…
Unfortunately, resources and services available to assist
these young people are insufficient.
The Close Foundation helps “close the gap” between need
and existing resources by raising and distributing funds
to give Harford County’s troubled youth hope for their
future.
The Albert P. Close Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization
that seeks grants and raises and distributes funds, including
personal and corporate donations, to help troubled youth
get the help they so desperately need.

6. our plan
The Close Foundation raises money to award grants, provide
assistance to qualifying programs, and provide ongoing financial
assistance to the Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) in the
form of a discretionary fund. The Close Foundation interacts on
a regular basis with the DJS to identify and fund such special
needs.
In 2009, the Foundation awarded $12,000 in grant money to
several different Harford County organizations. Our goal is to
be able to award more grant money to qualified organizations in
years to come.
In the future, the Foundation will be expanding their reach
to help serve as advocates for troubled youth, begin forming
strategic partnerships with other organizations, and work with
more organizations that assist at-risk youth before they get into
trouble.
The Foundation has awarded grants to the following organizations
to date: Family & Children’s Services of Central Maryland-Harford
County • Alternative Education Program-Harford County Public
Schools • Positive Behavior School Intervention (PBIS) Program
at Alternative Ed. • Addiction Connections Resource, Inc. •
