Alien hand syndrome is a rare neurological condition where the affected hand appears to move involuntarily, as if possessed by a foreign intelligence. It is caused by damage to the brain's medial motor region or corpus callosum, disrupting communication between the areas controlling voluntary movement. Symptoms include an alien hand that performs complex acts without conscious control, while the other hand remains normally responsive. Sufferers often feel their hand has a will of its own. The condition was depicted in the 1964 film Dr. Strangelove.
