9. In one episode of Shameless, Sheila breaks down as she explains her condition to main
character, Frank Gallagher.
Sheila: “I have not been out of the house in five years.”
Frank: “Five years?!”
Sheila: “I have this overwhelming fear. I’ve got Agoraphobia.”
In the show, she desperately wants to overcome her fear and become a functioning
member of society. She frequently spends hours psyching herself up to walk out her front
door and to the front of her lawn.
AGORAPHOBIA
10. OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DISORDER (OCD)
On multiple occasions throughout
the show, Sheila asks that her
guests take off or cover their
shoes with plastic bags before
entering her home. All of her
furniture is also covered with
plastic covers.
11. • The term “Agoraphobia” was used and portrayed accurately via the emotional breakdown
of Sheila Jackson
Sheila’s Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder was displayed accurately as she had an obsession
over germs and cleanliness and her compulsion was covering everything in plastic.
However, its not to say that everyone with OCD has germ-related OCD.
