CONTEXT
▸Brooklyn 99 is an American sitcom about a detective crew at
NYPD’s 99th precinct.
▸Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) is the main protagonist along with 6
other main characters including Terry Crews.
▸Dry humor, punch lines, and progressive episodes are some of
the reasons why this show is so popular.
▸With a profession such as detective work, psychological issues
are bound to pop up. Here are a few major psychological issues
noted throughout the show.
3. TEXT
JAKE PERALTA
▸ Surprisingly, this character does not portray
any major psychological issues. He is simply
immature and obsessed with Die Hard.
▸ His main issue is dealing with his father
abandoning him when he was younger,
which he does not hesitate to mention
throughout the show.
▸ He constantly expresses emotions and
doesn’t seem to be ashamed of it. He does,
however, believe therapy is a hoax and
doesn’t take any professional help because
of this belief.
4. TEXT
AMY SANTIAGO
▸ Amy Santiago portrays obvious traits of
obsessive compulsive personality disorder.
▸ She creates organized binders for even the
most minimal tasks.
▸ She corrects other character’s grammar, and
even spell checks their documents for errors.
▸ She is also seeking constant approval of her
supervisor throughout the show, again even
with the most minimal tasks; ensuring there
are no errors made.
▸ She can easily be labelled as a perfectionist.

TERRY JEFFORDS
▸ Terry Jeffords starts off the show
showing signs of PTS. (I leave out the
D because I don’t believe stress from a
traumatic event is a disorder.)
▸ After he overcomes his PTS, he slowly
turns into a narcissist.
▸ He constantly talks in third person,
shows off his body in an arrogant
manner, and brags about his abilities.
▸ Through all this, he never shows lack of
empathy, however.
6. TEXT
GINA LINETTI
▸ Gina Linetti is a secretary/assistant to the
Captain of the precinct.
▸ She exhibits classic signs of Narcissism.
▸ She shows complete lack of empathy
towards her coworkers, shows lack of
interest in anything other than herself, and
constantly belittles the people around her.
▸ The only time she shows any signs of
empathy is if it benefits her in some way,
or someone makes her feel too bad (for
sake of the plot).
7. TEXT
ROSA DIAZ AND
RAYMOND HOLT
▸ Both these characters demonstrate Schizophrenic
traits.
▸ Rosa Diaz is the classic “badass” cop who shows no
emotion.
▸ Raymond Holt is the Captain of the precinct, and
shows zero emotion throughout the show with his dry
humor and lack of facial expression.
▸ Diaz shuts people out and never lets anyone learn
anything about her throughout the show.
▸ Holt also is uncomfortable with sharing feelings.
▸ While these two characters click and are very similar,
they both end up showing some emotion to each other
and other members of the crew, usually ending in a
threat to not tell anyone about those feelings.
