Thrilled to have been a part of the first TEDYerevan! Thanks to reddit for giving me so many things to give TED Talks about. Hope I made Mister Splashy Pants proud. It's not too late to keep donating to reddit's Donors Choose fundraiser!
Here's the blurb from the press release:
Social Entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian is going to share his experience of social entrepreneurship with Armenian NGOs. Meeting will take place on March 25, 2010, at 17:30PM, at PFCS NGO
Alexis started a social enterprise called ''Breadpig''(http://breadpig.com/ ), at the end of 2007 because he wanted to produce and sell geeky things. Instead of spending the profits building waterslides made out of gold, he donates it all to non-profits working in areas related to the items ''Breadpig'' sells. It's most recent product, publishing xkcd: volume 0, the first book of the popular webcomic, xkcd, has been sold over 25,000 copies -- Breadpig's profits are donated to Room To Read, a charity dedicated to promoting literacy in the developing world. In the last two years since inception, the "uncorporation" has given away almost $100,000.

We’ll start our time together by taking a step waaaaaay back to look at the driving forces that have made our society what it is today. When you understand what is happening—and why—you’ll feel so much more confident about how to communicate with colleagues, friends and family in the weeks, months, and years to come. I’ll show up some fun evidence of what’s been happening, and I’ll (hopefully) give you an understanding of what’s been happening, so you’ll know what to expect in the future. I will also really screw up about thirty percent of you for the next several weeks. Smiley-face-emoticon.
Pendulum Theory says there’s an 80-year continuum in society, and it’s divided into two 40-year cycles. The first cycle, a “Me” cycle, is inwardly-focused, self-centered social pattern whose defining characteristics include a respect and admiration of attractive, individually confident alphas. The other cycle, a “We” pattern, takes the opposite set of values. It’s not about big dreams. It’s about small actions. You’ll learn what this values-cycle means for your organization and how to make the most of where we are in 2014.
When it comes to life, most people are more lost than a hooker’s virginity.
How does a man often mistaken for one of the Lollipop Kids in The Wizard of Oz have more sex than the entire cast of Debbie Does Dallas? To all you “ordinary” guys out there, this should offer a shining ray of hope. Wanna know what it takes to thrive in the adult arena? Read on.
Barry Manilow will become the new lead singer for death metal icon Goatwhore before this publication sells a million copies.
If you were alive when the original Die Hard was in theaters, you’re old enough to read this book.
Anyone with a sociological imagination can make a difference and together we can change the world! In this inspirational talk, the founder and editor of Sociological Images traces its humble beginnings and surprising impact. Drawing on inspiration from C. Wright Mills, she argues that each and every one of us can contribute to ensuring that sociology guides our national conversation and shapes our policy.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

46. Dear Redditors, Ever since the visit of one of your Dear Leaders, Alexis "kn0thing" Ohanian, my inbox has been orangered with pleas to "Restore Truthiness." The track record of your hivemind speaks for itself. Mr. Splashypants got a name. You rescued Soapier. You frightened the sweet-and-sour Jesus out of a 90-year-old man on his birthday. Despite how silly and nonsexual reddit can be, your true colors show when someone is in need. I almost had a pregnant when I saw what you had done at DonorsChoose.org for classrooms around the country. I am humbled and honored (a rare combination for me), and find myself wishing there was a Look of Approval. You have inspired me by helping untold thousands of students; with the momentum you've created, we could stage a hundred rallies. I might just call on you, Redditors - for nothing is more terrifying than tens of thousands of Heroes taking to the streets with the faint odor of bacon wafting behind them. Except for bears, obviously. One huge upvote for you. Sir Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, DFA
I got to speak at TED in India about a whale named Mister Splashy Pants
I got to speak at TED in India about a whale named Mister Splashy Pants
Hey wait, what are social media?
People consuming news (what’s new) with help from other (sometimes random) people
twitter
facebook
Reddit of course
What does this mean for all of us here? Well, ideas spread further and faster than ever before.
Some of these are very important
Some of these are very important
Some are less thoughtful
Some are less thoughtful
It could be your company’s marketing
It could be your company’s marketing
Or it could be a personal declaration
Or it could be a personal declaration
The point is, all of these ideas are equal online
The theme of this TEDx is beyond borders.
What I’m talking about starts with getting ideas beyond the borders of your own mind
It doesn’t matter where you are, as long as you’re connected to an open internet
The internet is your canvas.
Ok, so you’ve come to terms with the fact that your idea – whatever it is you want to spread online is just as equal as anyone else’s
You’ve got to invite serendipity, you can’t control what ppl will do with your idea, you’ve just got to invite them to play with it – how?
Well, let me show you with an example.
I’ll demonstrate this w/ an example from just a few weeks ago
For months now, Stephen Colbert, host of a popular comedy show has been mentioning reddit on air – apparently he’s a fan of the site, which is cool, but he knows that the reddit community adores him
There was recently a rally in DC on the anniversary of the famous I have a dream speech by Dr. MLK.
only this time
It was hosted by this guy, Glenn Beck, a popular political commentator, and inadvertent comedian
Afterward, someone on reddit named “mrsammercer”, suggested that Colbert hold his own counter-rally.
Colbert makes a living satirizing men like Glenn Beck, so it seemed like the perfect counter-demonstration
Random users created their own section of reddit
Well, Stephen got the message, and began teasing the idea of hosting a rally on his show, talking about how the reddit community was egging him on
but this only encouraged redditors to go a step further
They realized he was on the board of a fantastic NGO in the US called DonorsChoose
Most of our public schools in the US are woefully underfunded, and many teachers – esp in poor districts – have to buy their own supplies.
For the richest country in the history of the world, this is pretty sad.
So donorschoose let’s individuals donate to fund the projects these teachers need money for
So reddit started a fundraiser and decided they’d beat the previous record holder,
Hillary clinton, who’d fundraised $29,945
We gave them a week, and breadpig offered to add $1000 if they hit that goal
They crushed that number. In less than 24 hrs.
And broke the donors choose counter
Colbert was floored. He event wrote a special thank you letter to reddit.
With photo
The rally has since been announced, in keeping with the theme of mockery, it’s the keep fear alive rally
DonorsChoose realized what was happening only when their servers started choking on all the traffic
You’ve got to invite serendipity, you can’t control what ppl will do with your idea, you’ve just got to invite them to play with it – how?
Remember the famous captain picard
Be open and engage the ppl talking about you
But here’s what they did right – they jumped into the discussion!
Their executives even did a real-time reddit interview with the community, answering any and all questions
At this moment, they’ve raised $$$
At this moment, they’ve raised $$$
At this moment, they’ve raised $$$
At this moment, they’ve raised $$$
At this moment, they’ve raised $$$
At this moment, they’ve raised $$$
At this moment, they’ve raised $$$
But I’m betting reddit breaks half a million by 10/30, the date of the rally
That’s not just votes for a whale with a cute name.
That’s not just votes for a whale with a cute name. That’s people’s hard-earned money.
Granted, these sorts of events don’t happen many other places online, but the model that makes it work on reddit can be applied elsewhere. And there’s no telling what will catch fire and what won’t.
Many more ideas have gone here -- nowhere.
But in this case, the idea not only spread, but an action followed – people opened their minds to an idea,
And then they opened their wallets
The walls are down, the only border keeping your idea from the world
is right here. Here’s an idea that started the exact same way as all the others that never leave the borders of our minds
The big ideas of tomorrow won’t come from above
Sure, they’ll come from the below
But they’ll come from everywhere
Will yours be the one that wins? I can’t promise that, but I can offer this guidance
Chances are each of you in the audience right now has an idea worth spreading, that’s why you’re here. Well, if you’re willing to share it, and the timing is right, who knows what’ll come of it.
