The document discusses TSA's risk-based approach to airport security. It has multiple layers of security to create a stronger system. TSA is undertaking efforts to provide more effective security efficiently by applying an intelligence-driven, risk-based approach. This involves focusing screening on unknown risks while expediting screening for known, trusted travelers. TSA is working to expand programs like TSA PreCheck to allow more low-risk travelers expedited screening through risk assessments and partnerships with CBP and airlines. The goal is to strengthen security while improving the passenger experience.

Abstract
In order to maintain social and economic equilibrium, day-to-day operations must make use of other modes of transportation, such as buses, trains, and ferries. These intricate and interconnected transit systems need to make use of the proper technology to avoid disruptions in their operations, which would be detrimental to the inhabitants, users, data, and assets they serve. At every stage of the journey, the passengers, the crew, the equipment, and the cargo all need to be safeguarded and protected. This is because of the very complicated and frequently vast landscapes. Transportation routes, such as those found in airports and seaports, need to be routinely examined to verify that they are not only free of obstructions but also that they are operating as smoothly as possible. In addition to the risks posed by other dangers and vulnerabilities, the potential for terrorist attacks is an inherent risk at these transportation facilities; as a result, they require the necessary measures to protect what is most important. In addition to issues regarding the environment and the structure, maintaining the integrity of information technology systems is a consistent focus. In each of these situations, a comprehensive and well-thought-out security solution is necessary, even though the particular needs may vary.
Transportation Security Proposal
Introduction
One of the organizations that have successfully ensured the safety of the nation's transportation system is the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The transportation business is unique in that it has an impact not only on the specifics of daily living but also on the state of the economy as a whole. When it comes to providing transportation services in a fast and effective manner, the dependability and safety of the organizations providing those services are quite necessary. The transportation industry faces a wide range of issues that get more complex as the market matures. These challenges are exacerbated by the large number of people who use transit stations and the high value of the items that are transported on ships and ferries. Transportation Security in the United States employs a variety of strategies to defend the country, some of which may be covert while others may be obvious to the general public. These strategies are implemented in varying degrees depending on the severity of the threats. This division makes use of tactics such as canine-team airport searches and randomized data collecting and analysis to accomplish its goals. In addition, it works in conjunction with the United States Federal Air Marshals and checks passenger manifests to watch lists. According to Palmer (2020), the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) uses a variety of screening measures to ensure the safety of American citizens. These screening methods might r ...
Examining Intuitive Navigation in Airports - Drs 2014 Andrew CaveAndrew Cave
Presentation slides for from DRS2014 conference. Paper available at: http://eprints.qut.edu.au/view/person/Cave,_Andrew.html
Airports accommodate passengers with a range of prior experience, from frequent flyers, to passengers who fly every couple of years, to those who have never flown before. Passengers with varying levels of prior experience may use different visual elements when navigating the airport. Ensuring all passengers can navigate to the processing activities intuitively is important for passengers, airports and airlines.
This paper examines how participants with Low, Medium and High airport familiarity navigate through the departures area at an Australian international airport. Three navigation activities are investigated (i) navigating to the check-in row, (ii) navigating through the Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAGs) preparation area before security screening, and (iii) navigating to either the boarding gate first or to a discretionary activity first, after exiting customs. In the three activities, differences were observed between the familiarity groups. These differences include the use of different information to locate the check-in desk, different actions when navigating through the LAG preparation area, and evidence that Low familiarity passengers have a desire to locate the boarding gate as soon as possible once through customs. This research provides evidence based design recommendations for airports to benefit from intuitive passenger navigation.

7 Ways Facial Recognition Can Unlock A Secure, Frictionless and Personalized ...InteractiveNEC
According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, over 821 million passengers boarded U.S. airline flights in 2016. With demand for air travel expected to double over 20 years, 2 that makes for some very crowded airports. What used to be a pleasant experience is now marred by long lines, time-consuming security checks, and constant stress. From the checkin counter and the self-service kiosk to the TSA screening lines and boarding lines at the gate, travelers wait in one queue after another.
With the right technology—like advanced biometric and facial recognition solutions—airports can make an air traveler’s journey a more pleasant one once again.
Here are seven ways advanced recognition technologies can provide a secure, frictionless and personalized passenger experience.

2. Layered Security Approach
TSA uses layers of security as part of a risk-based approach to protecting passengers and
our nation’s transportation systems. Multiple layers combine to create a much stronger
system.
Although checkpoint operations are the most visible layer, they represent just one part of
TSA’s security system.

Risk-Based Passenger Security Overview
TSA is undertaking efforts to provide the most effective security in the most efficient
way and improve the passenger experience at airport security checkpoints by applying
an intelligence-driven risk-based approach.
1. The majority of airline passengers are low risk.
2. The more information available on each passenger, the easier it is to assess risk.
3. Behavior detection and interviewing techniques should be strengthened in the screening
process.
4. TSA must accelerate its efforts to optimize screening processes and the use of technology
to gain system-wide efficiencies.
5. Increase security by focusing on unknowns; expedite known/trusted travelers.

5. Expedited Screening Entry Points
Slide 5
There are several ways to receive the expedited screening experience including:
• TSA Pre✓™ available at 40 airports
• DoD available at 10 airports
• CBP Trusted Travelers including Global Entry, SENTRI and NEXUS
• Clearance holders and other low risk populations
• Certain frequent flyers
• Managed Inclusion available at 10 airports
• Known Crew Member available at 29 airports
• 12 & Under, 75 & Older
6. TSA Pre✓™ Expedited Screening Initiatives
TSA Pre✓™
Passengers become eligible for expedited screening to access TSA Pre™ expedited screening lanes
through various mechanisms including membership in U.S. Customs and Border Protection Trusted
Traveler programs or through partner airlines by meeting TSA established frequent flyer eligibility and
opt-in criteria. If TSA determines a passenger is qualified, the low- risk status designation is embedded in
the passenger’s boarding pass. By placing more focus on prescreening, TSA is able to expedite physical
screening for known passengers while increasing system-wide effectiveness.
Over 13 million TSA Pre™ passengers have been screened to date.
DoD CAC Card
Active Duty Military Members, Reserve and National Guard may receive TSA Pre✓™ screening at 10
airports by presenting their DOD Common Access Card (CAC) card to be scanned.
434,075 have been screened since November 2011. The program is currently pursuing a list-based DoD
solution which does not require a CAC card to be scanned. This will enable active duty military to access
TSA Pre✓™ at all 40 airports.
Managed Inclusion
As part of the Transportation Security Administration’s risk-based approach to aviation security, the
agency is evaluating the use of explosive detection canines and behavior detection to conduct “real time”
threat assessments in an effort to improve security, efficiency and the passenger experience.
After an initial risk-based assessment by Passenger Screening Canines and Behavior Detection Officers, a
TSA Officer will verify the traveler’s boarding pass and identification. A random generator, currently an
electronic floor mat with directional arrows, randomly designates whether the cleared passenger is to
proceed to the TSA Pre✓™ lane or standard screening lanes.
