The greenhouse effect occurs when greenhouse gases in the atmosphere trap heat radiation from the Earth's surface, causing the surface temperature to be warmer than it would be otherwise. While the actual temperature rise is small, the fragile Earth ecosystem is sensitive to changes, so the greenhouse effect causes problems by raising the planet's temperature. The main greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases which are emitted through human activities like burning fossil fuels and agriculture.
