international attention. Why is there an interest in the effect? Why are people willing to invest so
much time and effort investigating its consequences and willing to suffer by them? What is the basis
for believing the effect is real?
The greenhouse effect is a naturally occurring process, which is initiated by the sun. It is a result of
the fact that there are gases in the Earth's atmosphere which contain the properties to absorb

Answer/Thesis: While there are many gasses that human activities emit directly into the atmosphere,
some major gasses which are causing harm in the atmosphere and resulting in the increased
greenhouse effect are:
Carbon dioxide: It is originated by burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas, though
deforestation is also a very significant contributor.
Methane: It is due to agriculture (especially livestock and rice fields), fossil fuel extraction and the
decay of organic waste in landfill sites.
Nitrous oxide: sources include agriculture (especially nitrogen–fertilized soils and livestock waste)
and industrial processes.
Fluorinated gases: This gas is generated due to industrial processes.

environment by reducing the number of vehicles on the road. In order to get more people off the

The way a greenhouse works is that sunlight shines in and warms up the plants, and some of that
radiation can't exit through the glass forcing the heat to stay in the greenhouse. The UV radiation
comes through the glass walls and warms the plants while weaker IR radiation has trouble getting
through the glass walls so it's trapped in the greenhouse; thus, warming it up (Lallanila, "What Is the
Greenhouse Effect?"). Similarly, the Earth has incoming heat that is then trapped, warming up the
surface. It works the same way a greenhouse does hence the name the Greenhouse Effect (Lallanila,
"What is the Greenhouse Effect?"). There are a few greenhouse gases that are responsible for the
Greenhouse Effect. Making up 1% of our atmosphere, Carbon Dioxide, Ozone, Methane, and Water
Vapor, act as a blanket that surrounds Earth to help regulate climate control (Rinkesh. "Causes of the
Greenhouse Effect – Conserve Energy Future."). The Greenhouse Effect isn't bad. It actually helps
us survive on Earth. Without it, the Earth would be 30 degrees Celsius lesser which would be too

from the greenhouse gases goes into space, while some of it burns along the atmosphere, and a small

Global Warming is due to the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is a naturally occurring
process that aids in heating the Earth's surface and atmosphere. It results from the fact that certain
atmospheric gases, such as carbon dioxide, water vapor, and methane, are able to change the energy
balance of the planet by being able to absorb longwave radiation from the Earth's surface. Without
the greenhouse effect, life on this planet would probably not exist as the average temperature of the

directions. Over 90 % of this emission of longwave energy is directed back to the Earth's surface
where it once again is absorbed by the surface. The heating of the ground by the longwave radiation
causes the ground surface to once again radiate repeating the cycle described above, again and
again, until no more longwave is available for absorption.
The amount of heat energy added to the atmosphere by the greenhouse effect is controlled by the
concentration of greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere. All of the major greenhouse gases have

result of these higher concentrations, scientists predict that the greenhouse effect will be enhanced

computer modeling. Computer models suggest that a doubling of the concentration of the main
greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, may raise the average global temperature between 1 and 3 degrees

The Greenhouse Effect is the roll that the atmosphere plays in insulating and warming the earth's
surface. The atmosphere is the part of the earth that is covered by a thin blanket of gasses.
Nitrogen and oxygen are the main gasses in our atmosphere. We would not be able to survive

1. INTRODUCTION 1.1. What is the Greenhouse Effect? The Earth's climate is determined by
the receipt and distribution of the radiation received from the sun (Dunne, 2013). Light from the
sun undertakes three corridors: 25% is absorbed by the atmosphere, 30% is reflected back into
space and 45% is absorbed by the Earth's surface (Dunne, 2013). The light absorbed by the Earth's
surface is converted into energy and used for the various biological processes. In the atmosphere,
some gases have strong infrared radiation absorption ability and are able to absorb the infrared
emitted by the Earth's surface, and re–emit this infrared to the Earth's surface, thus warming the
Earth's surface more than it otherwise would be (Botkin & Keller, 2014). These gases are referred
to as greenhouse gases and this warming of the Earth's surface is referred to as "The Greenhouse
Effect". Figure 1 below presents an illustration of this greenhouse effect. The greenhouse gases cause
heat to become trapped between the atmosphere and the Earth's surface, similar to how air is trapped
in a greenhouse. It must be noted that the greenhouse effect is a naturally occurring phenomenon but
