Definition of short and long term
aid
Short Term
Emergency Relief
Aid
Aid from governments, organisations, charities to help
people survive after natural disaster, or armed conflict.
Sometimes called humanitarian aid.
Long Term
Development Aid
Aid from governments, organisations, charities to enable
countries and communities to ensure people have access
to basic needs and can improve their living conditions.
Aid-It is the word used to describe the help given to poor nations
by richer countries.
Who gives aid
 Governments
 NGOs-Non-governmental organisations people that
are funded by donations and not by the government.
We need NGOs to give aid as sometimes governments
don’t have money to give and sometimes a government
doesn’t want to as they might have had a bad history
with that country So NGOs have to give them the
essential needs.
Some NGOs
Reasons for and against aid
Reasons for Reasons against
 Without our help the poor
people have no chance of life
 We should always help people
worse off than ourselves.
 We all live in the same world.
We should help each other.
 We need the things they have, so
we might as well help them.
 If we help poorer countries it
will provide new markets for our
products.
 What's it got to do with us?
We have enough of our own
problems
 Most aid is stolen or wasted
and doesn’t get to the people
who need it.
 There used to the bad
conditions. There's no need
to help them
 The more aid we give, the less
they will help themselves
