Aid is voluntary transfers of resources from one country to another intended to benefit the recipient country. The Australian government donates almost $3 billion annually in overseas aid, primarily to countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Australia also provides humanitarian aid during regional emergencies like natural disasters and war. There are two main types of aid: tied aid, where funds must be spent on goods from the donor country; and untied aid, which recipients can use to purchase goods from any country.
