IFPRI organized a two day workshop on “Agricultural Extension Reforms in South Asia – Status, Challenges, and Policy Options” to be organized at Committee Room 3, NASC, Pusa, New Delhi on February 17-18, 2015. IFPRI has been conducting research related to agricultural extension reforms in India and collaborating with researchers in other south Asian countries for the past five years through various projects. For understanding extension reforms in India, a major consultation was held in NAARM in 2009 during which policy makers called for development of evidence for spreading extension reform process in India. Since then several research papers have been produced on various aspects of Indian extension system. While they are presented in various forms including several discussion papers, there is a need to pull all the research result together to present it in form that could be used by the policy makers to further guide them in the reform process. South Asian countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka are going through similar challenges in getting knowledge to farmers. Several experiment shave been conducted to test new approaches to extension by the public, private and NGO sectors. Learning from each country experiences will bring collective understanding and knowledge for the policy makers who are attempting to bring changes in the reform process. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together a groups of researchers, analysts and policy makers to present the issues, constraints and challenges facing agricultural extension reforms that are being implemented in South Asian countries.

The world of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones has been the playing ground of security institutions for many years. Even though remote controlled UAVs have been around for a long time, the cost and complexity of miniaturized avionics made it prohibitively expensive to automate such small platforms.
In the last few years this has changed dramatically. Commercialisation and mass production of cheap small avionics together with advances in software allowing three dimensional vision and remote image interpretation make it possible now to build a drone that can do centimetre precision spatial surveys on a surprisingly small budget. This opens a slew of possibilities in the application of precision agriculture.
Dynamic Remotely Operated Navigation Equipment is abbreviated as DRONE.
A Drone, in a technological context, is an unmanned aircraft. Drones are more formally known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) or Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASes). Essentially, a drone is a flying robot. The aircrafts may be remotely controlled or can fly autonomously through software-controlled flight plans in their embedded systems working in conjunction with on-board sensors and GPS.

Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

major crops contribute 4.67 percent
to the GDP, other crops 2.25 percent,
livestock 11.61 percent, fisheries 0.43
percent and forestry 0.41 percent
each.

agriculture sector, the
country ranks 9th in wheat
production, 11th in rice
production with an edge of
having aromatic long grain
basmati, 4th in cotton
production, and 14th in

and dates. Similarly, in
livestock it is 2nd in buffalo’s
population, 13th in cattle,
and 9th in sheep and 3rd in
goat while in milk production
Pakistan’s standing is at 4th

cater to the farmers’ requirements
and their connectivity with the
experts through the local extension
agents. Soil sampling will also be a
main component of this project for
soil health diagnostics. The presence
of the extension service will be
increased through newspapers,
primetime on television and social
media including Facebook and
Twitter while we are also reaching
farmers through SMS, robocall, and
call centers. In fact, 5 million
farmers will soon have access to the
latest technology techniques, farm
experts and easy financing through
smartphones. The program has
already been rolled out.

is working on efficient
management of irrigation

agronomy has improved a lot.

being tested to improve water
