Dabney is an African–American and European descent whose parents went to a segregated school in
Virginia. His great–grandmother of three generations before him were free blacks before the Civil
War, but during the war lived in fear that they would be kidnapped and forced to submit to slavery,
thus living in constant fear. His grandfather of three generations before him was a white slave
owner. This side of the family is where Dabney has a connection with past family members that
were Confederate soldiers and members of the Virginia 1861 Secession Convention. His belief is
that the Confederate flag represents the men who died at such battles like Manassas, Shiloh, and
Gettysburg. He believes that the flag has been a representation of white supremacists groups in
America but to deny the historical value of the Confederate flag would just be as wrong as the white
supremacists. Dabney's belief is that people cannot ignore prejudice or the symbol of prejudice by
the flag, but that removing the flag from public display will not stop the white supremacists, or the
prejudice that they adhere to. He believes that removing the flags would not stop the country from
jailing more minorities than whites, and that this country needs to serve its people by resolving these
problems with real congressional help and by cultural change and education and not by arguing over
a piece of fabric. Historian Lars Prillaman belief is that the Confederate Battle flag should not be

WATKINS GLEN (WENY) – After a gunman opened fired at a historic black church in Charleston,

its support of a debunked and destructive cause.

for battle. This flag was the Confederate Flag. The same flag from the 1860s marking the pro–
slavery side of the Civil War. A terrible and unnecessary war from the past had resurfaced itself in
modern day America and stoked its vengeful flame in South Carolina. The Confederate States of
America were a group of 11 states that fought for pro–slavery, states rights, and political liberty for
whites. All were under the presidency of Jefferson Davis. However, this issue was in the 1800s. So

Heritage Coopted by hate July 10th, 2015, 2,000 citizens stood around the statehouse in Columbia
South Carolina to watch as the confederate flag was removed from the pole on the grounds. The
removal of the flag had emotions raging in the South, many Southerners believing that the flag was
a symbol of heritage, while others thought it was a symbol of hate. But is the flag a symbol of hate,
or does the hate come from the people who fly a flag in a negative way? Since the flag was created
in 1861, the views of the flag have been coopted into an idea of hate. The Stars and Bars was the
first official fag that was adopted by the Confederacy in March of 1861. The Stars and Bars had
seven stars in the top right hand corner of the flag to represent the seven original confederate states.
The Stars and Bars resembled the Stars and Stripes flags of the Union, as a result this led to
confusion on the battle field (Confederate). The Stars and Bars (Confederate). The Confederate

The true history behind this flag varies quite a bit from the collective memory of the flag that is used
to support arguments in the debate. One of the most important characteristics of the flag that has bee
lost in its long history is the fact that the flag that many say represents the Confederacy and its ties
in southern history is not really a symbol of the Confederate States of America at all. The
Confederate States of American went through three different flags during the time of their existence.
None of which were the flag that we know so well today, this flag instead was flown by General
Robert E. Lee as a battle flag of his Northern Virginian army unit. This was the only means in which
this flag had any ties with the Confederacy, other than being seen in the upper left hand corner of
their second and third flag. Also, General Lee himself left the flag behind him after his side lost the
war saying "I think it wiser moreover not to keep open the sores of war," in a letter declining an
invitation to the Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Association. This begins to invoke the question of
whether or not the heritage argument is justified or not as the General of the Confederate Army cut
his ties with the flag after losing the war.
Another argument made by many flag supporters is "that the Confederate battle flag is a historic

America has always housed a preference for the negative freedoms and liberties. There's a proclivity

But what are the limits on the first amendments? How far does it protect hate speech, hate
monuments? Not to my surprise, the United States since the civil war the
United States has allowed the people to honor and commemorate Confederate generals across the
nation. With the heavy aggrandizement of the Confederacy, you would think that they won the Civil
War on an honorable cause instead of the Union. In no way is there an expectation for America to
conduct everything in a perfect manner and be an all–around great nation, America has a very
flawed history like every other nation. Germany, for example, does not allow any circulation Nazi or
Neo–Nazi paraphernalia because Nazism is not something that needs to be commemorated or

11. Consuasive Speech On The Confederate Flag
The Confederate flags have been around with the US since the mid 1800s when the South split from
the North. Slavery and Racism has been poison to the citizens of America ever since and we've been
trying to get rid of it for the longest of times. The statue of confederate soldiers have been here for a
while too. The flags radiate hatred all over the US while the statues truly represented white
supremacy. Three reasons why the Confederate flag and statues should be removed from the south
are that many Southern folk believe the Confederate statues and flags is a part of southern heritage
when it is not, Southerners believe it's actually right to always show free speech on what they
believe in, and they don't care for the opinion of others who live there that see the flag as something
that radiates hatred and darkness.
First of all, the statues and flags are a great way of remembering the past and the people of the past,
but it stops people from pursuing their happiness. For example, if they saw something they didn't

disturbance in their life and make it difficult on them. According to "No Longer About South

The Confederate Flag
The Confederate Flag is the symbol for the Southern state in the Civil War. It is not just pieces of
material. The flag represent families and where they came from. Flags have been a part of history
since the beginning of time and the Confederate flag is a large part of the United States history.
People need to learn what the flag has represented. The true meaning. Not what they think the flag
has represented. Teaching the meaning of the Confederate flag needs to start in the schools with
young children. Without knowing the true history and meaning of the Confederate flag the war over
the flag may never stop. People cannot change history by removing a flag from a pole, it is history
and history will never change. Society can move forward by educating people on the Confederate
flag and change the way future generations view this traditional symbol of the South.
With heightened controversy today over the removal of the Confederate flag, it is important to
understand the history of it. This history of the Confederate Flag, also known as the Confederate
battle Flag dates back to the Civil War. The original 11 Confederate States of America included;
Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina,
Arkansas, Tennessee and Virginia. They were a Republic made up of the Southern states that

While Stars and Bars have long been associated by many with slavery, the latest campaign to

covered so much ground, as efforts to remove icons that have been part of the visual and cultural
landscape of the South for decades are a foot at national, state, and local levels. In one Arkansas
town, the school board voted unanimously Tuesday to ban the song "Dixie" for the next school year
and phase out "Rebel," the school's mascot. "They are part of our history and not all of our history is

Historical, Socio–political and Cultural Background –
The Confederate flag has a complex and ever evolving history. There were three successive designs

sequence of sounds, marks on a page or an image. The signified is the mental concept of some part

The process of signification of the Confederate flag can be explained by recognizing the
aforementioned components in terms of this particular symbol as follows:
Signifier – The image of the Confederate flag or the word itself.
Signified – The mental concept of the Confederate flag i.e. the blue saltire on a red surface.
Referent – The physical and concrete existence of the Confederate flag i.e. the actual flag itself.

the rebel flag clutched in his hands, dressed in Confederate gray, a black man named Anthony

Confederacy during the time of the Civil War. With further research, Hervey found at least 100,000

Virginia, Robert E. Lee chose to fight with the south. He is known as one of the greatest generals in
all history because of his devotion to duty and honorable character. It is known as a flag for racism,
but it is not meant to be racist at all. This flag was originally created to be a battle flag for the

The Confederate Flag: Controversy or Logical Solution?
The Confederate flag has been a topic of controversy in the United States for many years. It and
other symbols of the Confederacy are parts of many state flags in the South and it is even flown at
several state buildings throughout the South. To some the Confederate flag is a historical symbol
and is believed to be a way of remembering the Civil War that almost tore the nation in two, but to
others it represents fear and hatred due to its use by racial hate groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and
it symbolizes the slave–holding South that existed prior to the Civil War. Such a controversial
symbol should not be flown on state grounds, but also should not be forgotten. State lawmakers
should remove the Confederate flag from state buildings and instead erect memorials remembering
the Civil War that are jointly Union and Confederate, or museums remembering the war and
honoring the thousands of soldiers that died during America's bloodiest war.
Historically the Confederate flag has had several different incarnations, none of which are at the
center of current controversy. "The original national flag of the Confederacy was referred to as the
"Stars and Bars," and was used between 1861 and 1863" (Brumfield). This flag had an appearance
that very much resembled the first American flag designed by Betsy Ross. It featured a dark blue

The Confederate flag has been around since 1861, as a symbol of endless war, and detestation
towards African Americans. Today, 154 years later, some states still incorporate the confederate flag
into their state flags. The Confederate flag does not show progression in history, rather it is offensive
to many groups and should be put to rest, because it does not promote unity in America. The
Confederate flag holds America back and keeps our country stuck in the past. Today the Confederate
Flag is still incorporated into five state flags. Those states are, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia,
and Mississippi. The Confederate flag is still currently flying over South Carolina's capital,
Columbia, because of a state law. This law is known as The South Carolina Heritage Act of 2000.

As Winston Churchill stated, "The flags of the Confederate States of America were very important
and a matter of great pride to those citizens living in the confederacy. They are also a matter of great
pride for their descendants as part of their heritage and history," but in present day, the American
people are claiming the meaning of the confederate flag is hate and discrimination. In South
Carolina, the confederate flag was taken down and placed in a museum after a heated debate
stemming from a mass shooting of nine black churchgoers in a historical Charleston church during
bible study. The shooter, Dylann Roof, was a white supremacist. A photograph of Roof emerged
showing him holding a confederate flag which fueled the political flag debate. The confederate flag
is at the center of the controversy over racism. Although, it was first created as an official flag of
confederacy, the confederate flag has changed into what is now either a symbol of Southern heritage
and pride or slavery and racism by Americans. It is time to put this flag in a museum to be honored

Do you think that schools should ban the Confederate Flag in the class rooms? Don't we have the
right to say what we want? Isn't is a part of our history? Banning the Confederate Flag is absurd. If
they are going to ban the Confederate Flag, then they need to ban all flags that are considered
offensive. Do we even have the right to say what we want? If they interdict the flag than it is
restricting our rights. The first amendment states that we have freedom of speech. We should be able
to display our affection based on our freedom of speech. At Christiansburg High School they had
suspended over than 20 people, for showing their affection towards the flag. They were showing that
they should keep the flag because it is a piece of our history. Sometimes we think that we never have

If you prohibit the flag then we cannot learn about it, or any of the battles that the flag flew in. The
Battle of Manassas was the very first battle that the flag flew in. Why would you ban something that
was so important to our history, and still is? The flag is represented to be about the Thirteen
Confederate States. Most people only know about the Confederate Battle Flag. They do not know
about the National Confederate Flag because they didn't know the history about it. If you ban one
flag that is offensive, so why not ban all that are offensive? If you ban one flag that is considered
offensive then why not ban all flags that are considered offensive? It is not fair to ban one flag that
is so called offensive. They need to ban all flags that are offensive if they ban one. If they ban the

No, Historically the confederate flag is an emblem of racial intolerance.Which is a beloved symbol

The confederacy fundamentally was a group of people who left the union just to keep their enslaved

On September 18, 1863 Confederate soldiers stood proud at the edge of the battle field raising their
Confederate Flag in pride and hope. One hundred and fifty–four years later, that flag is now being
demonized from its true meaning by many people. Conflict about this well–known flag has been
going on for generations. In Georgia, during the Civil War, the Confederate Flag represented the
formation of the Confederacy and hope for success of the Southern states; now some people have
turned the flag into a symbol of racism, hate, and many more untrue meanings.
The idea of a Confederate Flag started 24 days after the secession of the Confederate States of
America from the United States. These states included South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida,
Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Since they
had yet to make a flag for their new government the Provisional Congress made the "Committee on
the Flag and Seal," directed by William Porcher Miles of South Carolina. The Committee asked for
ideas for the Confederate Flag and received hundreds of designs for the flag from ... Show more

When several people were questioned about their view of the flag some responded with pride. For
example, a Cherokee High School senior said, "The flag stands for my heritage and pride in my
southern culture". Another said, "I think it is a symbol of pride because my people stood up for
themselves" (Schall). The negative statements said about the flag include, "...it represents red–necks
and stupidity," (La Tona), "...it means slavery of African–Americans by ruthless white men and
women and their fight to keep slavery," (Sicilia). After asking someone from Quebec, Canada who
has lived in Georgia for 30 years about their thoughts on the flag they simply answered with, "It
means the south to me, nothing more."

a division between the white and black (Lozada). According to the Pensacola News Journal, in
Milton, Florida, the City Council remains divided about whether the Confederate flag should remain

removed, and the final fate of the Confederate flag in Milton will be decided by the council in

is southern heritage. Depending on what region is asked about if it is racist, there are different
answers. The Midwest say it is racist and the south, of course, say it 's not racist. A poll showed that
African Americans, Democrats, and the highly educated were more likely to perceive the flag
negatively. The Confederate States of America came into existence on February 4, 1861. It had six
states at first and they were the Deep South. Those states were South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida,
Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana. After April 1861 four upper south states joined. They were
Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Arkansas. They made they 're own court system and

The first reason the Confederate flag should be taken down is because it is a symbol of hate. More

Confederate Flag: Honoring Veterans or Hateful Racism?
The first action by the winner of a battle is to remove the flag of the loser, a sign of victory. A war

the angulations against the Confederate Flag is to pass a bill, through Congress, stating the

Accordance to these gestures, is the idea that we, as a nation, have to go through a point in which,
we have to ban American history, due to the reasons that our past are coming back into the present

When I first came across the Negative Views assignment, I immediately thought of the Confederate

definition of "redneck" on Internet Slang and it said redneck means, "Unsophisticated rural person

Goodman wrote, "The Confederate flag is indeed America 's swastika." In the same way the Jewish
community sees the swastika as a painful reminder of the Holocaust, the African–American
community perceives the flag as a reminder of slavery and racial discrimination. The Confederate
flag, a relic of the devastating Civil War, has become one of the most controversial and contentious
icons in American history. The debate over the flying of the Confederate flag is in regard to the
Southern Civil War ideals of slavery and white racial superiority that historians have agreed the flag
represents. Supporters of the Confederate flag argue that as a symbol of Southern pride, honor, and
character, the flag is a reminder of the South's distinctive and rich history. Opponents of the flag
contend that rather than a symbol of southern bravery, the Confederate flag symbolizes the racist,
hateful ideas of the Confederacy. The Confederate flag, a clear symbol of white superiority,
prejudice, and slavery, should not be allowed to be perpetuated by the government in a society
where those ideals should be long gone. The discord over the Confederate flag is rooted in wider
debate over the causes of the Civil War and the ideals the flag symbolizes. With the high likelihood
