This document discusses alternative terminology used in statistics. It notes that while dependent and independent variables are commonly used, response and explanatory variables are preferable as quantities are rarely statistically independent. An independent variable can also be called a predictor, regressor, controlled variable, or input, while a dependent variable can be called a response, regressand, measured variable, or output. Different statistical analyses may use different relevant terminology as well, such as exposure variables or risk factors.
