Recently, Santa Fe County acquired LiDAR across 3000+ square miles as part of their 2014 Orthophotography project. One deliverable, derived from the LiDAR bare earth surface, is a flowline network. The surface must be hydrologically conditioned to create the most accurate flow paths. One part of this conditioning is to “burn” culvert line features into the bare earth surface to allow the flowlines to model correctly across manmade surface features.
FME Workbench and Data Inspector is utilized to model and review linear culvert features and the newly conditioned surface. Utilizing LiDAR derived bare earth surface data, high resolution orthophotography, preliminary stream flowline network, and culvert research points, FME can combine the data into a rich and detailed 3d scene that can be quickly reviewed and provide feedback as to the quality of the hydrologic conditioning at a single culvert crossing.
Scaling graphite to handle a zerg rush

The Department of National Defence (DND) is developing a central repository for land, building, and infrastructure data. This a joint project between the Assistant Deputy Minister Infrastructure and Environment (ADMIE) and the Mapping and Charting Establishment (MCE). This project involves managing DND real property and other spatial data provided by DND bases and wings across Canada through a unique, integrated and standardized Real Property Spatial Data Warehouse (RPSDW), hosted at MCE, containing a SQL Server database. Data provided by DND bases and wings must meet standards defined and documented by ADMIE, in terms of data formats accepted (GeoMedia MDB, ArcGIS FGDB, MapInfo MIF or AutoCAD SDF), geometry, schema and attribute data types, domains and accepted values for each feature class. An FME workspace and an equivalent tool contained within an ArcGIS Data Interoperability Toolbox were created to provide the geotechs from DND Bases using ArcGIS Data Interoperability or FME Desktop with a toolset, delivered together with a user’s guide, that allows them to perform a self-validation of the DND real property and other spatial data before these data is sent to MCE to be loaded into the RPSDW SQL Server database.

Thames Water has been using geographic information system (GIS) solutions from Esri for over six years and ArcGIS Platform now supports almost every part of the organisation. ArcGIS gives Thames Water a single, accurate and up-to-date record of all of its assets and makes this vital business information accessible to employees right across the business. When customers contact Thames Water, call centre agents can locate the caller, identify assets in relation to that customer address and easily see what maintenance or infrastructure projects have occurred or are planned for that area. In addition, Thames Water uses the ArcGIS platform to exchange accurate asset and location information with its mobile engineers, surveyors and field workers. ArcGIS has become an indispensable enterprise system for Thames Water and will continue to play a vital role in the business, as it steadfastly evolves to meet the needs of customers and regulators.
DDI Dense Point Cloud Processing Presentation Oct 2009
With the advent of higher powered 3D scanners comes the challenge of dealing with the dense point cloud data sets. Direct Dimensions uses a wide variety of 3D scanning equipment to capture the as-built shape of existing objects. The common problem with all of these projects is the need to proces the point cloud data.
While applications fall generally into either reverse engineering and inspection, both directions present challenges for processing the large data sets efficiently, quickly, and properly. This presentation will focus on an overview of the software tools available commercially that address these problems with a comparison of the various workflows, strategies, and results that one can expect from the various solutions.
Highly Available Graphite
Initially presented at OpenWest 2014 conference.
Graphite and StatsD gather line series data and offer a robust set of APIs to access that data. While the tools are robust, the dashboards are straight from 1992 and alerting off the data is nonexistent. Nark, an opensource project, solves both of these problems. It provides easy to use dashboards and readily available alerts and notifications to users. It has been used in production at Lucid Software for almost a year. Related to Nark are the tools required to make Graphite highly available.
Esri Scotland Conf 2016 - SEPA
SEPA needs flood event data for flood risk mapping, assessments, and management. The document describes a trial of using ESRI Collector App and ArcGIS Online to capture flood event data (FEDCAP), finding it improved data quality and reduced collection/processing time compared to traditional methods. The winter trial period saw many flood events across Scotland and successful testing of FEDCAP. The methodology, trial results, and future improvements are discussed. Feedback was positive about FEDCAP being a simple, flexible, and secure way to effectively capture flood data.
Transforming AutoCAD Data to Smallworld with FME

The Department of National Defence (DND) is developing a central repository for land, building, and infrastructure data. This a joint project between the Assistant Deputy Minister Infrastructure and Environment (ADMIE) and the Mapping and Charting Establishment (MCE). This project involves managing DND real property and other spatial data provided by DND bases and wings across Canada through a unique, integrated and standardized Real Property Spatial Data Warehouse (RPSDW), hosted at MCE, containing a SQL Server database. Data provided by DND bases and wings must meet standards defined and documented by ADMIE, in terms of data formats accepted (GeoMedia MDB, ArcGIS FGDB, MapInfo MIF or AutoCAD SDF), geometry, schema and attribute data types, domains and accepted values for each feature class. An FME workspace and an equivalent tool contained within an ArcGIS Data Interoperability Toolbox were created to provide the geotechs from DND Bases using ArcGIS Data Interoperability or FME Desktop with a toolset, delivered together with a user’s guide, that allows them to perform a self-validation of the DND real property and other spatial data before these data is sent to MCE to be loaded into the RPSDW SQL Server database.

Thames Water has been using geographic information system (GIS) solutions from Esri for over six years and ArcGIS Platform now supports almost every part of the organisation. ArcGIS gives Thames Water a single, accurate and up-to-date record of all of its assets and makes this vital business information accessible to employees right across the business. When customers contact Thames Water, call centre agents can locate the caller, identify assets in relation to that customer address and easily see what maintenance or infrastructure projects have occurred or are planned for that area. In addition, Thames Water uses the ArcGIS platform to exchange accurate asset and location information with its mobile engineers, surveyors and field workers. ArcGIS has become an indispensable enterprise system for Thames Water and will continue to play a vital role in the business, as it steadfastly evolves to meet the needs of customers and regulators.
DDI Dense Point Cloud Processing Presentation Oct 2009
With the advent of higher powered 3D scanners comes the challenge of dealing with the dense point cloud data sets. Direct Dimensions uses a wide variety of 3D scanning equipment to capture the as-built shape of existing objects. The common problem with all of these projects is the need to proces the point cloud data.
While applications fall generally into either reverse engineering and inspection, both directions present challenges for processing the large data sets efficiently, quickly, and properly. This presentation will focus on an overview of the software tools available commercially that address these problems with a comparison of the various workflows, strategies, and results that one can expect from the various solutions.
Highly Available Graphite
Initially presented at OpenWest 2014 conference.
Graphite and StatsD gather line series data and offer a robust set of APIs to access that data. While the tools are robust, the dashboards are straight from 1992 and alerting off the data is nonexistent. Nark, an opensource project, solves both of these problems. It provides easy to use dashboards and readily available alerts and notifications to users. It has been used in production at Lucid Software for almost a year. Related to Nark are the tools required to make Graphite highly available.
Esri Scotland Conf 2016 - SEPA
SEPA needs flood event data for flood risk mapping, assessments, and management. The document describes a trial of using ESRI Collector App and ArcGIS Online to capture flood event data (FEDCAP), finding it improved data quality and reduced collection/processing time compared to traditional methods. The winter trial period saw many flood events across Scotland and successful testing of FEDCAP. The methodology, trial results, and future improvements are discussed. Feedback was positive about FEDCAP being a simple, flexible, and secure way to effectively capture flood data.
Transforming AutoCAD Data to Smallworld with FME

While recently converting their electric distribution sources, PG&E included an initiative to convert their GIS data into a standalone ArcSchematics model. The schematics model was developed to support the engineering group as well as PG&E‘s DMS outage management system and was tailored to provide a geo-schematic representation following major roadways to enhance locating of key primary system features. Software was developed to allow daily GIS updates to feed the schematics model directly thus greatly reducing latency between the two systems. Maintenance of schematics consists of daily executed minor whitespace management edits ensuring ease of use.
