3D Modeling of Culverts in Santa Fe County New Mexico
Recently, Santa Fe County acquired LiDAR across 3000+ square miles as part of their 2014 Orthophotography project. One deliverable, derived from the LiDAR bare earth surface, is a flowline network. The surface must be hydrologically conditioned to create the most accurate flow paths. One part of this conditioning is to “burn” culvert line features into the bare earth surface to allow the flowlines to model correctly across manmade surface features.
FME Workbench and Data Inspector is utilized to model and review linear culvert features and the newly conditioned surface. Utilizing LiDAR derived bare earth surface data, high resolution orthophotography, preliminary stream flowline network, and culvert research points, FME can combine the data into a rich and detailed 3d scene that can be quickly reviewed and provide feedback as to the quality of the hydrologic conditioning at a single culvert crossing.
UAVs and FME: Powering Your Drone and Its Data with FME
This presentation will look at some typical UAV support workflows where FME can help both with flight planning and post processing. Examples include examining flight restrictions and obstacles to determine where it is safe to fly. For post processing, FME's tools for managing imagery will be examined, including georeferencing and mosaicking. The results from local test flights on a low-cost UAV platform will be reviewed. We will wrap with a summary of some customer applications where FME has been used to support UAV operations, and some of the challenges and opportunities that this rapidly growing industry presents in the near future.

FME Spatial Querying in a CAD-Driven GIS
Ponderosa has used AutoCAD Map 3D and Microsoft SQL Server as its primary GIS for over 10 years. Having DWG objects stored with real world coordinates has allowed Ponderosa to manage its telecom infrastructure by providing accurate locations for underground locators, footage information to qualify available services as well as detailed maps for engineering and planning purposes.
In the past 5-years, regulatory requirements have relied more and more on GIS data to support reports that require a variety of GIS layer overlay including Census Blocks, Census Tracts and Zip code Boundaries. Limited GIS tools in AutoCAD have proven to be inefficient and time consuming in running some the required queries and analysis. This class will focus on how FME's robust GIS querying functionality was used to save hundreds of hours in querying and analyzing GIS data stored in AutoCAD Map 3d and SQL Server.
Winter Maintenance Management System Bavaria
The extreme seasonal weather conditions during the winter months in Bavaria present a serious challenge to road maintenance services in the region. Maintaining the flow of traffic throughout the road network requires a winter maintenance service that operates effectively and with foresight. One of its main tasks is to coordinate the 600 public and 700 private service vehicles deployed to keep traffic moving along Bavaria's 22,000 kilometres of roads.
Together with Germany's National Meteorological Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst), we integrate and distribute reliable and highly actual weather information and forecasts. This presentation shows how FME Server is used to integrate weather information and forecasts from different web services almost in real-time. The data provided by FME Server is used in a web-based information system that is part of the daily work of the road authorities.

Tesera Systems uses machine learning to provide high resolution forest inventory services to clients by combining imagery, vector data, and precise location data. They developed a solution using tiling schemes and generic FME workspaces to process large amounts of data from 500 to 50,000 square kilometers across multiple projects. This involves taking disparate source data like LiDAR, CIR, and plot data and generating tiled imagery, vectors, and other data layers that can be viewed and analyzed in desktop GIS and web viewers.

Air traffic control (ATC) manages complex three dimensional airspace. In particular, Denver Air Route Traffic Control Center (Denver Center) is responsible for a 60,000-ft. tall volume of airspace covering over 265,000 square miles! Denver Center needs a modern 3D GIS platform capable of depicting its numerous aeronautical features including ATC areas, sectors, minimum safe altitudes, airways, military airspace, airports, navigation equipment, communication information, and surveillance infrastructure. The main objective of this study is to incorporate these entities into a 3D digital twin of Denver Center, titled ZDV-3D. ZDV-3D intends to produce intuitive mediums for visualizing and analyzing ATC system interrelationships. Esri technology applications will be incorporated including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS Earth. I will review capabilities and limitations of Denver Center’s current geospatial tools and highlight benefits of implementing the latest ArcGIS 3D rendering capabilities into this project. I will also address production challenges, plans for further ZDV-3D development, and ways to share outcomes with other ATC facilities. ZDV-3D will enable Denver Center to provide optimized efficiency and safety for all who fly in our increasingly crowded skies.

FME is used to extract and prepare Smallworld GIS data for System Planning’s hydraulic modeling software (Winflow). We will explain how this requirement came about, how the information is extracted, manipulated, and used within Winflow.
FME in Tesera’s HRIS: Slicing through the forest of data to see the trees
Tesera Systems uses machine learning to provide high resolution forest inventory services to clients by combining imagery, vector data, and precise location data. They developed a solution using tiling schemes and generic FME workspaces to process large amounts of data from 500 to 50,000 square kilometers across multiple projects. This involves taking disparate source data like LiDAR, CIR, and plot data and generating tiled imagery, vectors, and other data layers that can be viewed and analyzed in desktop GIS and web viewers.
adjust.IT - Improving Spatial Accuracy through Conflation
The document describes a conflation project to improve the spatial accuracy of a utility's GIS data. It involved adjusting assets mapped in an old land base to a new, higher accuracy land base using shift models. The methodology included defining shift models, generating shift vectors, adjusting assets in job areas, delivering adjustments to production GIS in groups, and propagating jobs to alternative trees. Visual inspection and customer review were part of the QA/QC process. The approach aimed to preserve network connectivity while allowing continued work during adjustment.

Scaling graphite to handle a zerg rush

Air traffic control (ATC) manages complex three dimensional airspace. In particular, Denver Air Route Traffic Control Center (Denver Center) is responsible for a 60,000-ft. tall volume of airspace covering over 265,000 square miles! Denver Center needs a modern 3D GIS platform capable of depicting its numerous aeronautical features including ATC areas, sectors, minimum safe altitudes, airways, military airspace, airports, navigation equipment, communication information, and surveillance infrastructure. The main objective of this study is to incorporate these entities into a 3D digital twin of Denver Center, titled ZDV-3D. ZDV-3D intends to produce intuitive mediums for visualizing and analyzing ATC system interrelationships. Esri technology applications will be incorporated including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS Earth. I will review capabilities and limitations of Denver Center’s current geospatial tools and highlight benefits of implementing the latest ArcGIS 3D rendering capabilities into this project. I will also address production challenges, plans for further ZDV-3D development, and ways to share outcomes with other ATC facilities. ZDV-3D will enable Denver Center to provide optimized efficiency and safety for all who fly in our increasingly crowded skies.

Reverse Engineering: Prime2 to Prime1 using FME. The purpose of the project is to provide up to date Prime1 data, which has been re-engineered from Prime2, for those customers whose applications are unable to utilise Prime2.
Using FME we took three different approaches to the project. I will provide a brief overview of options 1 and 2 and why they didn't provide us with the required output. I will then focus on the option 3, we have implemented this option. I will give a brief demo of the FME workbench.
(1) Converting Prime2 to a Prime1 GFO
(2) Writing from the Prime2 Oracle database to our current Prime1 Oracle database
(3) Extracting Prime2 updates, out putting to a GFO format to enable graphic operators to update Prime1.

The Rural Payments Agency chose Leica Zeno to help manage land parcel data collection. Leica Zeno was implemented using a split build approach and feature editing in batches for automation. Training was provided to staff on using the new system. Future improvements may include using a rules engine to simplify the build process.

Eircode is Ireland's national postcode system that assigns a unique alphanumeric code to every address in Ireland. The Eircode consists of a routing key made up of three characters and a unique identifier of four characters separated by a space. The Eircode Address Database (ECAD) contains over 2 million Irish addresses along with their Eircode and geographic coordinates in different coordinate systems. Key tables in the ECAD like ADDRESS_POINT, SPATIAL_INFO, and POSTAL_ADDRESS provide address and location data that can be used in GIS applications to route to exact locations and provide improved services like emergency response, utility maintenance and delivery optimization.
