The student created an indie magazine aimed at male students. To attract the target audience, masculine fonts and colors like red and black were used throughout the magazine. Photos of typical indie artists in casual clothes also helped match the magazine's genre. Learning technologies like Photoshop, InDesign and using online resources allowed the student to produce photos, lay out pages, and research the target audience. While improvements were made from the preliminary task, the contents page design could still better match the overall magazine style.

2. ‘Point Of Sale’
The image used on the front cover is designed to grab the target audience and attract them to pick up the
magazine in the first place. This is because my main image uses a direct mode of address as her eyes are focused
on the camera. This makes the reader feel that the artist is looking directly at them which persuades them to pick
up the magazine. The use of the props also helps make the image stand out to the reader and it brings colour to
the page. The variations in blue, purple and black shades provides a focus point of the main image and the use of
the prop makes the reader think that the artist is trying to reveal something which relates to the double page
spread article.
The use of the “Focus” masthead positioned boldly across the top of the page also helps grab the readers
attention. This is because it uses a bold block font in a large font size which is stretched across to fill both sides of
the page. The use of the dark burgundy colour also helps grab the readers attention as it is different to the other
colours used on the front page making it stand out. It is also different to the conventional colour of black used for
the masthead which will appeal to my target audience. Burgundy is an up-to-date trend colour for my target
audience, therefore they will appreciate the colour and be attracted towards it. The use of blue strokes on the
masthead also attracts my target audience towards picking up the magazine as it is unique.
The use of the colour blue in the cover lines also attracts my target audience towards picking up the magazine.
This is because they stand out from the light pastel blue background. The blue colour also contrasts well with the
blonde colour of the artists hair. The two colours therefore balance each other out which helps make both the
writing and the image stand out to the reader. The colour blue also appeals to my target audience as it is a colour
they commonly associate with and wear.
The font style used for my main cover line “Chloe Wright” is in a feminine style which also attracts my target
audience towards my magazine. This is because they will be drawn towards feminine articles, therefore the use of
the font helps attract them to it and helps stand out compared to the other articles.
The cover lines used on the front cover implies the type of content the magazine has. The use of the words
“Fashion” and “Gig” show that the magazine is fashion and music related which attracts my target audience as they
are key interests for them.
The puff used on the front cover also reveals a competition that will attract the target audience. This is because
they are interested in festivals and the V Festival is commonly known, therefore they will be attracted to a
backstage pass as it will be different from the normal standard gig they are used to.
3. Language
The language used throughout my media products is predominantly female based. For example, on my front cover I
used a cover line called “A-Z of internet trends”. This attracts my target audience because they are a social group of indie
teenage girls, aged 14-18. Therefore they are up to date on all social media websites and trends. Therefore, this cover
line helps attract my audience as they will want to keep up to date on the trends. The word “hashtag” also address my
audience as it is a common word/symbol used nowadays on social media websites such as Twitter.
On my front cover, I also used a cover line with the words “Fashion Blogger” in. This attracts my target audience because
it is stereotypically female based and the word “Fashion” relates to the type of hobbies and interests my target audience
has.
Another cover line used on my front cover uses the word “Gig”. This attracts my target audience as they are into music
and festivals/gigs, and will therefore be drawn towards this cover line in order to find inspiration for their next events.
The use of alliteration in “Gig Guide” also helps attract my audience as it is eye-catching due to both words starting with
the same letter.
On my front cover, I also used the word “Glorious”. This attracts my target audience because it is stereotypically known
as a feminine word which relates to my target audience. Females commonly use the word “glorious” to describe certain
things they like, therefore they will be able to relate to the cover line.
On my contents page, I featured an article called “Festival Look”. This attracts my target audience because they have an
interest in festivals and will therefore be drawn towards this cover line to find inspiration for their next events. Also, my
target audience are keen on staying up-to-date on trends, therefore they will be drawn towards this article to find out
whether they are keeping their style to the right trends.
Another article used on my contents page uses the word “Gossip”. This addresses my target audience as it is a common
topic discussed by females and will therefore draw them towards this article as they will want to find out secrets.
4. Double Page Spread Article
When writing my Double Page Spread article, I focused on attracting my target
audience. Therefore the style of article I used was presented in an interview format. This
would therefore attract my target audience as they will be captured from the front
image as the use of props shows that the artist wants to reveal something. Therefore,
the use of an interview format helps the reader find out more about the artist. The use
of an interview format also makes the reader feel that the artist is talking directly to
them and answering their questions. It is also stereotypically known that people aged
14-18 (my target audience) will be more interested in an interview than an article on the
artist as the interview reveals more information and is laid out in an easier way for the
readers to understand. From my music magazine questionnaire results, I found that 62%
wanted an equal amount of images and text and 32% wanted mainly images. Therefore,
my double page spread reflects the needs of my target audience as it breaks up the text
to make it easier to read and also uses a variety of images to help catch the readers
attention.
The questions used in my interview are related to my target audience as they provide
answers that they will want to find out. The questions used are quite open which
allowed the artist to answer freely which helped adapt long answers.
The use of the word “normal” in the masthead attracts my target audience as they will
be able to relate to the artist and look at her as a role model as she is in the same age
category as them and has the same interests.
5. Photos
For my main products I used DSLR camera which has high pixel definition, so my images were focused and therefore were high quality. This gave my magazine a
professional look as a highly focused image is a normal convention for all magazines. My images were taken in front of a plain wall so the result of the images is
focused purely on the model. Therefore this is representative of the type of magazine it is as the photography is only focusing on the model.
The main front cover image uses a medium close up with a direct mode of address which is a common convention for magazines. As she uses a direct mode of address
it attracts the target audience towards the magazine as her eyes catch their attention. The expression on her face and the use of the butterfly prop covering her mouth
gives the reader the impression that she is trying to reveal something and therefore the target audience should pick up the magazine in order to find out more
information. The outfit used for my front cover image is simplistic and plain which relates to the clothes my target audience wears to events such as festivals. The
colours used in the butterfly props are therefore the main point of colour for the main image which helps draw in the attention of my target audience. The variations in
shades of blue and black help capture the readers eyes as they are distinct colours.
My contents page image uses the same outfit from the front cover in order to keep consistently, however this time an additional accessory of the hat has been added
to capture the readers attention. My target audience can relate to my models choice of outfit as it is a typical festival outfit which they can take inspiration from. The
use of hat brings in more colour to the image as it’s a dark block colour which will capture the readers attention towards the image. The use of the ‘C’ prop also helps
attract my target audience as it brings in more colour and pink is stereotypically known as a feminine colour.
My double page spread uses a landscape image which adds variety to my choice of
images as my main front cover image and contents page images are portrait. The
change of outfit adds the variations of blue which connects to my colour scheme. This
addresses my audience as the variations of blue used are colours that they commonly
wear. The pose my model is in is addressed as feminine which also attracts my target
audience. For my final version I cropped out the windows in the background so the
model was in front of a plain background. This helped attract my audience towards
the main image as she was in focus and therefore stands out against the grey
coloured background. Due to the windows, natural lighting is reflecting on her left
hand side which also helps her stand out as it creates a glow effect around her which
attracts my audience.
6. Colours/Graphics
The colour scheme used for my magazine is burgundy, blue, black and white. I consistently use
these colours throughout my three products to keep the brands identity.
The burgundy colour attracts my target audience because it is a colour used in the trends
nowadays. My target audience are keen on keeping up with trends so will therefore appreciate
this colour. The burgundy colour is also different compared to conventional magazines. This
therefore helps it stand out compared to other magazines who use the typical block black colours
for mastheads.
The blue colour attracts my target audience specifically on the front cover because it compliments
the blonde colour used in my models hair. The blue colour also relates to the colours used on my
artists outfit for the double page spread. This therefore shows consistency and a professional
overall look for my magazine.
The use of black and white colours are conventional. The black colour is used for main features
such as sections on the cover lines for the front cover, article titles on the contents page and the
main body text article on the double page spread. I thought it was ideal to keep the colour black
for these reasons because it makes it easier for the reader to read and understand as it is a colour
which is used regularly on specific things my target audience relate to. An example of this is social
media websites as they use the colour black as their font.
The white colour is purely used when the burgundy colour is used in a block. For example on my
front cover, the white colour is used for the text to stand out against the burgundy colour in order
to catch my readers attention towards the magazine.
Overall, my colour scheme would attract my target audience because they can relate to all the
colours as they are used regularly in day to day life. The burgundy colour specifically attracts my
target audience as it is in the trends nowadays.
7. Mode of Address
For my front cover, my main image uses a feminine pose and the use of the butterfly props helps create a feminine tone to the magazine.
This therefore helps connect to the target audience as it is predominantly female based. This therefore attracts my target audience towards
the magazine as they can see it is predominantly female based due to the main image and the colours surrounding it.
The use of fonts, colours and language on my front cover also helps create a feminine tone. The main cover line of "Chloe Wright" uses a
curly effect font which is stereotypically related to females. The use of the blue and burgundy tones also creates a feminine theme to the
magazine. For the cover lines, the language used such as "fashion blogger" appeals to a female audience and therefore helps create a mode
of address. This is because it doesn't appeal to a male audience. The word “glorious” used on the bottom cover line also appeals to a
feminine target audience as it stereotypically a word related to women. The cover line “A-Z of internet trends” also appeals to a feminine
audience as they want to keep up to date on the latest trends both online and in person. This cover line could also appeal to a male
audience, however due to the majority of my front cover being predominantly female based, this may put males off the magazine.
For my contents page, the article “Get the dupes” and the image of the makeup relates to a female audience and automatically
creates a feminine tone. The article “Festival look” also creates the feminine tone due to the feminine outfits presented in the image.
The layout of my contents page could also create a feminine tone due to the amount of square images are presented. This is because
the layout of the images is presented in the format of an Instagram profile which attracts the female audience as Instagram is a social
media app that my target audience commonly use. The use of colours on my contents page also relates to a female audience due to
the overload of burgundy and blue shades and the pink letter ‘C’ prop used in the main image.
8. Unique Selling Point
The unique selling point of my magazine products is that it is aimed at an older more mature
teenager girls. This makes it unique because when you compare it to other magazines which are
predominantly female based, they have the tendency to use vibrant, bright colours and over pack
their front covers with information. An example of this is Company and Bliss magazine. These two
magazines use their bright vibrant colours to catch their readers attention, however, this would
attract a more younger female base as they can relate more to the bright colours. In comparison to
my front cover, I have used the colours burgundy and blue to create a calm, toned down effect but
still catches the attention of my target audience.
Another unique selling point of my magazine is the layout of my contents page. When comparing it
to Bliss, my contents page has a structured effect which makes it look more professional. This helps
create a unique selling point because it goes against the typical look/conventions of teenage
magazines. This is because my images are in a structured layout which helps make the main image
stand out. The layout of the images also symbolises the layout of an Instagram profile which is a
social media app my target audience use regularly. This therefore helps them relate to the magazine.
My magazine contents page also doesn’t use bright colours which are a typical convention of teenage
magazines. This therefore shows it is aiming at a more mature teenage audience which many
magazines don’t aim for nowadays.
