MPPT control design for variable speed wind turbine IJECEIAES
Variable speed wind turbine systems (VSWT’s) have been in receipt of extensive attention among the various renewable energy systems. The present paper focuses on fuzzy fractional order proportional-integral (FFOPI) control segment for variable speed wind turbine (VSWT) directly driving permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). The main objective of this study is to reach maximum power point tracking (MPPT) through combination of advanced control based on FFOPI control applied to generator side converter (turbine and PMSG). The basic idea of the FFOPI controller is to implement a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) in cascade with Fractional Order Proportional Integral controller (FOPI). A comparative study with FOPI and classical PI control schemes is made. The traditional PI controller cannot deliver a sufficiently great performance for the VSWT. However, the results found that the proposed approach (FFOPI) is more effective and feasible for controlling the permanent magnet synchronous generator to mantain maximum power extraction. The validation of results has been performed through simulation using Matlab/Simulink®.

Comparative Performance Study for Closed Loop Operation of an Adjustable Spee...IJPEDS-IAES
In this paper an extensive comparative study is carried out between PI
and PID controlled closed loop model of an adjustable speed Permanent
Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) drive. The incorporation of Sinusoidal
Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM) strategy establishes near sinusoidal
armature phase currents and comparatively less torque ripples without
sacrificing torque/weight ratio. In this closed loop model of PMSM drive, the
information about reference speed is provided to a speed controller, to ensure
that actual drive speed tracks the reference speed with ideally zero steady
state speed error. The entire model of PMSM closed loop drive is divided
into two loops, inner loop current and outer loop speed. By taking the
different combinations of two classical controllers (PI & PID) related with
two loop control structure, different approximations are carried out. Hence a
typical comparative study is introduced to familiar with the different
performance indices of the system corresponding to time domain and
frequency domain specifications. Therefore overall performance of closed
loop PMSM drive is tested and effectiveness of controllers will be
determined for different combinations.

The computations are ensured by the electronic differential, this driving process permit to steer each driving wheels at any curve separately.Modeling and simulation are carried out using the Matlab/Simulink tool to investigate the performance of the proposed system.
A novel optimum tip speed ratio control of low speed wind turbine generator b...journalBEEI
Variable speed control of wind turbine generator systems have been developed to get maximum output power at every wind speed variation, also called Maximum Power Points Tracking (MPPT). Generally, MPPT control system consists of MPPT algorithm to track the controller reference and generator speed controller. In this paper, MPPT control system is proposed for low speed wind turbine generator systems (WTGs) with MPPT algorithms based on optimum tip speed ratio (TSR) and generator speed controller based on field oriented control using type-2 fuzzy system (T2FS). The WTGs are designed using horizontal axis wind turbines to drive permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSG). The simulation show that the MPPT system based optimum TSR has been able to control the generator output power around the maximum point at all wind speeds.
In this paper, we focus on the modeling and control of a wind power system based on a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG). We proposed a technique of control strategies to have the maximum power from wind turbine (WT). This study deals with the problem of Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) based on Takagi Sugeno fuzzy model. The stability analysis is achieved. The gains of the designed controller are calculated by solving Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI). Finally, simulation results are provided to demonstrate the validity and the effectiveness of the proposed method.
This paper describes the design and implementation of Hardware in the Loop (HIL) system D.C. motor based wind turbine emulator for the condition monitoring of wind turbines. Operating the HIL system, it is feasible to replicate the actual operative conditions of wind turbines in a laboratory environment. This method simply and cost-effectively allows evaluating the software and hardware controlling the operation of the generator. This system has been implemented in the LabVIEW based programs by using Advantech- USB-4704-AE Data acquisition card. This paper describes all the components of the systems and their operations along with the control strategies of WTE such as Pitch control and MPPT. Experimental results of the developed simulator using the test rig are benchmarked with the previously verified WT test rigs developed at the Durham University and the University of Manchester in the UK by using the generated current spectra of the generator. Electric subassemblies are most vulnerable to damage in practice, generator-winding faults have been introduced and investigated using the terminal voltage. This wind turbine simulator can be analyzed or reconfigured for the condition monitoring without the requirement of actual WT’s.

Based on exhaustive review of the state of the art of the electric generators fitted to Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS), this study is focused on an innovative machine that is a Variable Reluctance Generator (VRG). Indeed, its simple and rugged structure (low cost), its high torque at low speed (gearless), its fault-tolerance (lowest maintenance), allow it to be a potential candidate for a small wind power application at variable wind

For better accuracy, a finite element model of a studied doubly salient VRG is developed using open source software FEMM to identify the electromagnetic characteristics such as linkage flux, torque or inductance versus rotor position and stator excitation. The obtained data are then transferred into look-up tables of MATLAB/Simulink to perform various simulations. Performance of the proposed wind power system is analyzed for several parameters and results are discussed.

The following article presents the control of the power generated by the Doubly Fed Induction Generator, integrated into the wind system, whose rotor is linked to the power converters (Rotor Side Convert (RSC) and Grid Side Converter (GSC)) interfaced by the DC-BUS and connected to the grid via a filter (Rf, Lf) in order to obtain an optimal power to the grid and to ensure system stability. The objective of this study is to understand and to make the comparison between Sliding mode Control technique and the Flux Oriented Control in order to control the Doubly Fed Induction Generator powers exchanged with the grid, it also aims at maintaining the DC-BUS voltage constant and a unit power factor at the grid connection point. The results of simulation show the performance of the Sliding mode Control in terms of monitoring, and robustness with regard to the parametric variations, compared to the Flux Oriented Control. The performance of the systems was tested and compared with the use of MATLAB/Simulink software.
Fuzzy optimization strategy of the maximum power point tracking for a variab...IJECEIAES
Wind power systems are gaining more and more interests; in order to diminish dependence on fossil fuels. In this paper, we present a variable speed-wind energy global system based on a synchronous generator with permanent magnetic (PMSG). The major goal of this study is to track the maximum power that is present in the turbine. An examination of control methods to extract the MPPT point, from a wind energy conversion system (WECS) under variable speed situations is presented. An intelligent controller based on the fuzzy logic control (FLC) is proposed for regulating permanent magnetic synchronous generator (PMSG) output power, in order to improve tracking performance. The principle of this maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm consists in looking for an optimal operating relation of the maximum power, then tracking this last. We simulated our system with MATLAB-Simulink software. The found results will be debated to elucidate performance of the global system.
Sensor fault reconstruction for wind turbine benchmark model using a modified...IJECEIAES
This paper proposes a fault diagnosis scheme applied to a wind turbine system. The technique used is based on a modified sliding mode observer (SMO), which permits the reconstruction of actuator and sensor faults. A wind turbine benchmark with a real sequence of wind speed is exploited to validate the proposed fault detection and diagnosis scheme. Rotor speed, generator speed, blade pitch angle, and generator torque have different orders of magnitude. As a result, the dedicated sensors are susceptible to faults of quite varying magnitudes, and estimating simultaneous sensor faults with accuracy using a classical SMO is difficult. To address this issue, some modifications are made to the classic SMO. In order to test the efficiency of the modified SMO, several sensor fault scenarios have been simulated, first in the case of separate faults and then in the case of simultaneous faults. The simulation results show that the sensor faults are isolated, detected, and reconstructed accurately in the case of separate faults. In the case of simultaneous faults, with the proposed modification of SMO, the faults are precisely isolated, detected, and reconstructed, even though they have quite different amplitudes; thus, the relative gap does not exceed 0.08% for the generator speed sensor fault.
In this paper, a hybrid power system is proposed to eliminate any interruption caused to absence of power supply network by the Fusion between the wind source and the photovoltaic source to create a hybrid system with internal power supply autonomy. The hybrid power system includes a solar and wind source whose wind energy conversion system is based on a doubly fed induction generator. The photovoltaic conversion system extracts the maximum power from the sun. A part of this power is used to supply the rotor of a doubly fed induction generator; the rest is injected in the grid. The connection between the two conversion systems is made by means of static converters (chopper/inverter). In the photovoltaic conversion chain, a controller for tracking the maximum power point is designed using the direct search approach the Perturb and observe method. The wind energy conversion system contains a doubly fed asynchronous generator with a control system of generated powers by the technique of the fuzzy logic. The simulation was done to prove the validity of the strategy and of the control method used for the control of the power generated by the hybrid system.

The simulation results are tested and compared in order to evaluate the performance of the proposed system.

This paper presents the modeling and simulation of wind energy Conversion System using the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG). The objectives are: to extract the maximum power of the wind speed by controlling the electromagnetic torque of the PMSG, to maintain constant the DC-link voltage despite the wind speed variations and to attain the unity power factor. In order to ensure a regulation with high performance and a good robustness against the internal and the external disturbances, a new control strategy called the Active Disturbance Rejection Control (ADRC) is used. Therefore, the Analysis and simulation of the ADRC and PI controllers are developed with MATLAB/Simulink software. The performance of these controllers is compared in term of references tracking, robustness and grid faults.
Tracking of Maximum Power from Wind Using Fuzzy Logic Controller Based On PMSGIJMER
Wind energy has gained a growing worldwide interest due to the nonstop rise in fuel cost. The main aim of the wind-energy system is to extract the maximum power present in the wind stream. In order to extract the highest power, the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm is used. This paper proposes the fuzzy logic MPPT controller to track the maximum power from the wind generation
system. The maximum power is achieved based on the rotor speed of the wind system which consists of
wind turbine and PMSG. The error and change in error is given as input to the fuzzy logic and its output
is connected to the boost converter. The voltage from the dc link is controlled by the Voltage Source
Inverter (VSI), and it is placed in grid side converter control. The proposed system is designed and evaluated in MATLAB/SIMULINK. Simulation results show the good dynamic performance of the proposed system.

In this papier, a low-cost solar photovoltaic water pumping system based on an induction motor without the use of chemical energy storage is presented. In literature, we can find several Maximum Power Point Tracking Algorithms, the choice of the algorithm is according to the nature of application. In this article, Variable Step Size Incremental Conductance MPPT method has been developed since it is fast and has less oscillations. The studied photovoltaic pumping system contains a centrifugal pump which is driven by a three-phase asynchronous motor. To control the water flow, the field-oriented control has been implemented. The control system is applied on two cities with different climatic conditions to evaluate their performance. The photovoltaic pumping system is developed using the MATLAB/Simulink software to discuss the results obtained. Consequently, the proposed MPPT based on the incremental conductance variable step shows good performances in terms of efficiency and tracking speed.
The velocity control of the electro hydraulic servo systemeSAT Journals
Abstract In general two basic methods are used for controlling the velocity of a hydraulic cylinder. First by an axial variable-displacement pump for controls flow to the cylinder. This configuration is commonly known as a hydrostatic transmission. Second by proportional valve powered by a constant-pressure source, such as a pressure compensated pump, drives the hydraulic cylinder. In this study, the electro-hydraulic servo system (EHSS) for velocity control of hydraulic cylinder is investigated experimentally and its analysis theoretically. Where the controlled hydraulic cylinder is altered by a swashplate axial piston pump or by proportional valve to achieve velocity control. The theoretical part includes the derivation of the mathematical model equations of combination system. Velocity control system for hydraulic cylinder using simple (PID) controller to get constant velocity range of hydraulic cylinder under applied external variable loads . An experimental set-up is constructed, which consists of the hydraulic test pump unit, the electro-hydraulic proportional valve unit, the hydraulic actuator unit , the external load control unit and interfacing electronic unit. Power Control of Wind Turbine Based on Fuzzy Sliding-Mode ControlIJPEDS-IAES
This paper presents the study of a variable speed wind energy conversion system (WECS) using a Wound Field Synchronous Generator (WFSG) based on a Fuzzy sliding mode control (FSMC) applied to achieve control of active and reactive powers exchanged between the stator of the WFSG and the grid to ensure a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) of a wind energy conversion system. However the principal drawback of the sliding mode, is the chattering effect which characterized by torque ripple, this phenomena is undesirable and harmful for the machines, it generates noises and additional forces of torsion on the machine shaft. A direct fuzzy logic controller is designed and the sliding mode controller is added to compensate the fuzzy approximation errors. The simulation results clearly indicate the effectiveness and validity of the proposed method, in terms of convergence, time and precision.

Inter-Area Oscillation Damping using an STATCOM Based Hybrid Shunt Compensati...IJPEDS-IAES
FACTS devices are one of the latest technologies which have been used to
improve power system dynamic and stability during recent years. However,
widespread adoption of this technology has been hampered by high cost
and reliability concerns. In this paper an economical phase imbalanced shunt
reactive compensation concept has been introduced and its ability for power
system dynamic enhancement and inter-area oscillation damping are
investigated. A hybrid phase imbalanced scheme is a shunt capacitive
compensation scheme, where two phases are compensated by fixed shunt
capacitor (C) and the third phase is compensated by a Static Synchronous
Compensator (STATCOM) in shunt with a fixed capacitor (CC). The power
system dynamic stability enhancement would be achieved by adding
a conventional Wide Area Damping Controller (WADC) to the main control
loop of the single phase STATCOM. Two different control methodologies
are proposed: a non-optimized conventional damping controller
and a conventional damping controller with optomised parameters that are
added to the main control loop of the unbalanced compensator in order to
damp the inter area oscillations. The proposed arrangement would, certainly,
be economically attractive when compared with a full three-phase
STATCOM. The proposed scheme is prosperously applied in a 13-bus
six-machine test system and various case studies are conducted to
demonstrate its ability in damping inter-area oscillations and power system
dynamic enhancement.
Fuzzy Gain-Scheduling Proportional–Integral Control for Improving the Speed B...IJPEDS-IAES
In this article, we have set up a vector control law of induction machine
where we tried different type of speed controllers. Our control strategy is of
type Field Orientated Control (FOC). In this structure we designed a Fuzzy
Gain-Scheduling Proportional–Integral (Pi) controller to obtain best result
regarding the speed of induction machine. At the beginning we designed a Pi
controller with fixed parameters. We came up to these parameters by
identifying the transfer function of this controller to that of Broïda (second
order transfer function). Then we designed a fuzzy logic (FL) controller.
Based on simulation results, we highlight the performances of each
controller. To improve the speed behaviour of the induction machine, we
have designend a controller called “Fuzzy Gain-Scheduling Proportional–
Integral controller” (FGS-PI controller) which inherited the pros of the
aforementioned controllers. The simulation result of this controller will
strengthen its performances.

Modified SVPWM Algorithm for 3-Level Inverter Fed DTC Induction Motor DriveIJPEDS-IAES
In this paper, a modified space vector pulse width modulation (MSVPWM)
algorithm is developed for 3-level inverter fed direct torque controlled
induction motor drive (DTC-IMD). MSVPWM algorithm simplifies
conventional space vector pulse width modulation (CSVPWM) algorithm for
multilevel inverter (MLI), whose complexity lies in sector/subsector/subsubsector
identification; which will commensurate with number of levels. In
the proposed algorithm sectors are identified as in two level inverter
and subsectors/sub-subsectors are identified by shifting the original reference
vector to sector 1 (S1). This is valid due to the fact that a three level space
vector plane is a composition of six two level space planes, and are
symmetrical with reference to six pivot states. Switching state/sequence
selection is also very important while dealing with SVPWM strategy for
MLI. In the proposed algorithm out of 27 available switching states apt
switching state is selected based on sector and subsector number, such that
voltage ripple is considerably less. To validate the proposed algorithm, it is
tested on a three level neutral point clamped (NPC) inverter fed DTC-IMD.
The performance of the MSVPWM algorithm is analyzed by comparing no
load stator current ripple of the three level DTC-IMD with two level
DTC-IMD. Significant reduction in steady state torque and flux ripple is
observed. Hence, reduced acoustic noise is a distinctive facet of the proposed
method.

best methods to control the drive systems. This paper is compared between
the field oriented control and direct torque control to show the advantages

A Novel Modified Turn-on Angle Control Scheme for Torque- Ripple Reduction in...IJPEDS-IAES
In recent years, Switched Reluctance Motors (SRM) have been dramatically
considered with both researchers and industries. SRMs not only have a
simple and reliable structure, but also have low cost production process.
However, discrete torque production of SRM along with intensive magnetic
saturation in stator and rotor cores are the major drawbacks of utilizing in
variety of industrial applications and also causes the inappropriate torque
ripples. In this paper, a modified logical-rule-based Torque Sharing Function
(TSF) method is proposed considering turn-on angle control. The optimized
turn-on angle for conducting each phase is achieved by estimating the
inductance curve in the vicinity of unaligned position and based on an
analytical solution for each phase voltage equation. Simulation results on a
four-phase switched reluctance motor and comparison with the conventional
methods validates the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Modeling and Simulation of Induction Motor based on Finite Element AnalysisIJPEDS-IAES
This paper presents the development of a co-simulation platform of induction
motor (IM). For the simulation, a coupled model is introduced which
contains the control, the power electronics and also the induction machine.
Each of these components is simulated in different software environments.
So, this study provides an advanced modeling and simulation tools for IM
which integrate all the components into one common simulation platform
environment. In this work, the IM is created using Ansys-Maxwell based on
Finite Element Analysis (FEA), whereas the power electronic converter is
developed in Ansys-Simplorer and the control scheme is build in MATLABSimulink
environment. Such structure can be useful for accurate design
and allows coupling analysis for more realistic simulation. This platform is
exploited to analyze the system models with faults caused by failures of
different drive’s components. Here, two studies cases are presented: the first
is the effects of a faulty device of the PWM inverter, and the second case is
the influence of the short circuit of two stator phases. In order to study the
performance of the control drive of the IM under fault conditions,
a co-simulation of the global dynamic model has been proposed to analyze
the IM behavior and control drives. In this work, the co-simulation has been
performed; furthermore the simulation results of scalar control allowed
verifying the precision of the proposed FEM platform.

Sensorless Control of a Fault Tolerant PMSM Drives in Case of Single-Phase Op...IJPEDS-IAES
This paper introduces a sensorless-speed-controlled PMSM motor fed by a
four-leg inverter in case of a single phase open circuit fault regardless in
which phase is the fault. To minimize the system performance degradation
due to a single phase open circuit fault, a fault tolerant control strategy that
includes taking appropriate actions to control the two remaining healthy
currents is used in addition to use the fourth leg of the inverter. Tracking the
saliency is done through measuring the dynamic current responses of the
healthy phases of the PMSM motor due the IGBT switching actions using the
fundamental PWM method without introducing any modification to the
operation of the fourth leg of the inverter. Simulation results are provided to
verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategy for sensorless controlling of
a PMSM motor driven by a fault-tolerant four-phase inverter over a wide
speed ranges under the case of a single phase open circuit.
Improved Stator Flux Estimation for Direct Torque Control of Induction Motor ...IJPEDS-IAES
Stator flux estimation using voltage model is basically the integration of the
induced stator back electromotive force (emf) signal. In practical
implementation the pure integration is replaced by a low pass filter to avoid
the DC drift and saturation problems at the integrator output because of the
initial condition error and the inevitable DC components in the back emf
signal. However, the low pass filter introduces errors in the estimated stator
flux which are significant at frequencies near or lower than the cutoff
frequency. Also the DC components in the back emf signal are amplified at
the low pass filter output by a factor equals to . Therefore, different
integration algorithms have been proposed to improve the stator flux
estimation at steady state and transient conditions. In this paper a new
algorithm for stator flux estimation is proposed for direct torque control
(DTC) of induction motor drives. The proposed algorithm is composed of a
second order high pass filter and an integrator which can effectively
eliminates the effect of the error initial condition and the DC components.
The amplitude and phase errors compensation algorithm is selected such that
the steady state frequency response amplitude and phase angle are equivalent
to that of the pure integrator and the multiplication and division by stator
frequency are avoided. Also the cutoff frequency selection is improved; even
small value can filter out the DC components in the back emf signal. The
simulation results show the improved performance of the induction motor
direct torque control drive with the proposed stator flux estimation algorithm.
The simulation results are verified by the experimental results.
Minimization of Starting Energy Loss of Three Phase Induction Motors Based on...IJPEDS-IAES
The purpose of this paper is to minimize energy losses consumed by three
phase induction motors during starting with wide range of load torque from
no load to full load. This will limit the temperature rise and allows for more
numbers of starting during a definite time. Starting energy losses
minimization is achieved by controlling the rate of increasing voltage
and frequency to start induction motor under certain load torque within a
definite starting time. Optimal voltage and frequency are obtained by particle
swarm optimization (PSO) tool according to load torque. Then, outputs of the
PSO are used to design a neuro-fuzzy controller to control the output voltage
and frequency of the inverter during starting for each load torque. The
starting characteristics using proposed method are compared to that of direct
on line and V/F methods. A complete model of the system is developed using
SIMULINK/MATLAB.

IRAMY Inverter Control for Solar Electric VehicleIJPEDS-IAES
Solar Electric Vehicles (SEV) are considered the future vehicles to solve the issues of air pollution, global warming, and the rapid decreases of the petroleum resources facing the current transportation technology. However, SEV are still facing important technical obstacles to overcome. They include batteries energy storage capacity, charging times, efficiency of the solar panels and electrical propulsion systems. Solving any of those problems and electric vehicles will compete-complement the internal combustion engines vehicles. In the present work, we propose an electrical propulsion system based on three phase induction motor in order to obtain the desired speed and torque with less power loss. Because of the need to lightweight nature, small volume, low cost, less maintenance and high efficiency system, a three phase squirrel cage induction motor (IM) is selected in the electrical propulsion system. The IM is fed from three phase inverter operated by a constant V/F control method and Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) algorithm. The proposed control strategy has been implemented on the texas instruments TM320F2812 Digital Signal Processor (DSP) to generate SVPWM signal needed to trigger the gates of IGBT based inverter. The inverter used in this work is a three phase inverter IRAMY20UP60B type. The experimental results show the ability of the proposed control strategy to generate a three-phase sine wave signal with desired frequency. This paper discusses the Power Factor Correction (PFC) for single phase AC-DC Buck-Boost Converter (BBC) operated in Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM) using inductor average current mode control. The proposed control technique employs Proportional-Integral (PI) controller in the outer voltage loop and the Inductor Average Current Mode Control (IACMC) in the inner current loop for PFC BBC. The IACMC has advantages such as robustness when there are large variations in line voltage and output load. The PI controller is developed by using state space average model of BBC. The simulation of the proposed system with its control circuit is implemented in MatLab/Simulink. The simulation results show a nearly unity power factor can be attained and there is almost no change in power factor when the line frequency is at various ranges. Experimental results are provided to show its validity and feasibility.

Fuzzy Sliding Mode Control for Photovoltaic SystemIJPEDS-IAES
In this study, a fuzzy sliding mode control (FSMC) based maximum power point tracking strategy has been applied for photovoltaic (PV) system. The key idea of the proposed technique is to combine the performances of the fuzzy logic and the sliding mode control in order to improve the generated power for a given set of climatic conditions. Different from traditional sliding mode control, the developed FSMC integrates two parts. The first part uses a fuzzy logic controller with two inputs and 25 rules as an equivalent controller while the second part is designed for an online adjusting of the switching controller’s gain using a fuzzy tuner with one input and one output. Simulation results showed the effectiveness of the proposed approach achieving maximum power point. The fuzzy sliding mode (FSM) controller takes less time to track the maximum power point, reduced the oscillation around the operating point and also removed the chattering phenomena that could lead to decrease the efficiency of the photovoltaic system.

3. CONTROL STRATEGY OF THE WIND TURBINE EMULATOR
In this section, the fuzzy control method applied to the wind turbine emulator is presented.
3.1. The Emulation of Wind Turbine
According to [9]-[12], the characteristics of Wind turbine have a great similarity to the
characteristics of DC motor, so it can be simulated by a DC motor.
Figure 2 present the control block diagram of the wind turbine Emulator system.
Figure 2. Control block diagram of the wind turbine Emulator system
In this diagram, the wind rotor speed is expressed as the measured DC motor speed divided by the
ratio of the gearbox. The reference torque of the DC motor which is the Wind Turbine Aerodynamic torque is
calculated by the Wind Turbine model according to the dynamic wind speed and the blade pitch angle and
the wind rotor speed. The reference current of the DC motor is obtained by the reference torque of the DC
motor.
In this work, PI and FLC controllers are used in speed regulation.
3.2. Fuzzy Logic Control
Fuzzy logic is able to use human reasons not in terms of discrete symbols and numbers, but in terms
of fuzzy sets. These terms are quite flexible with respect to the definition and values. The big advantages of
fuzzy logic control when applied to a wind turbine are that the turbine system neither needs to be accurately
described nor does it need to be linear [13].
Rule based fuzzy logic controllers are useful when the system dynamics are not well known or when
they contain significant nonlinearities, such as the un-stationary wind contains large turbulence.
In Figure 3, structure of fuzzy control is shown. A fuzzy controller usually contains four main
components: Fuzzifier, fuzzy rule base, inference engine and Defuzzifier. The Fuzzifier changes the input
(crisp signals) into fuzzy values. The fuzzy rule base consists of basic data and linguistic rules. The engine is

the brain of a fuzzy controller which ability to simulate the human decision based on finally, the second
transformation converts values into the real values [14].

3.3. Design of the Fuzzy Logic Controller
The plant control u is inferred from the two state variables, error (e) and change in error Δe. The
control rules are designed to assign a fuzzy set of the control input u for each combination of fuzzy sets of e
and Δe. Table 1 shows the rules base. Each pair (e, Δe) determines the output level corresponding to u.
Figure 4 shows the fuzzy logic controller.

The abbreviations used in Table 1 are defined as follows: NB is Negative Big, NM is Negative
Medium, NS is Negative Small, ZR is Zero, PS is Positive Small, PM is Positive Medium, PB is Positive
Big, B is Big and S is small. Figures (5–7) represent, respectively, the membership functions of the input e,
the membership functions of the input Δe and the membership functions of the output u.
In this paper, the triangular membership function, the max–min reasoning method, and the center of
gravity defuzzification method are used, as those methods are most frequently used in many literatures [15-
16].

In Figure 10, it’s indicated the tracking errors.
Both of the two methods track the output reference adequately. The FLC provides better tracking
than the PI controller.
Two important factors show the efficiency of the power conversion: the power coefficient
maintenance and the tip-speed ratio maintenance under wind speed fluctuations. The FLC shows better
performances better than PI controller in optimizing the power conversion. The PI controller stays oscillating
around optimal values. The FLC keeps the optimal power coefficient and tip-speed ratio values constant after
transient time.
It is clear that the maximum power extraction control works very well where the value of power
coefficient was kept at optimum value of power coefficient Cpopt which equals 0.48 with varying wind speed.

5. CONCLUSION
In this work, the model of the DC motor was incorporated within a larger simulation of a PMSG
system with the DC motor acting as the prime mover.
One of the advantages of the WTE is that various wind profiles can be tested to verify the control
algorithms.
The FLC method can quickly and accurately track the maximum power output for wind power
system.
Simulation results presented in this paper prove that a good MPPT strategy can be implemented
with a fuzzy logic controller.
Further work will be focused on induction machine to emulate the wind turbine.
