Adaption of Open Science Paradigm at Gdańsk University of
Technology

Motivations
• Only materials to selected courses are available online, often password
protected
• Publicly available Eng/Master Theses are non existent, only part of PhD
Theses are publicly available
• No common, widely understood and accepted policy for opening scientific
publications
• Students often do not come to classes!

• Increasing the visibilities of publications prepared by the employees of Gdańsk
University of Technology
• The requirements of EU financed projects (Horizon 2020 and Erasmus+)
• Legislative work conducted by Ministry of Science and Higher Education
• Global trends for the implementation of the Open Access model and the
related necessity to catch up not only with respect to foreign universities, but
also part of the Polish institutions
The Concept
• Goes beyond typical Open Access model
• Open Science is considered as sharing scientific papers, research data and
results, developed software or services that can be performer by the University
• Consists of the institutional repository, e-learning platform and software for
project management support
• We plan on including our Center of Knowledge and Technology Transfer into
the process as an advisory body

The Concept

NIWA Project (The Centre of Competence for Novel
Infrastructure of Workable Applications):
• Institutional repository as implemented and made available at
https://repository.os.niwa.gda.pl
• The e-learning platform was implemented and is available at
https://courses.os.niwa.gda.pl
• Some courses (like platform manuals, creativity course and open and
free license explaining course) were prepared
• The Open Access Policy for publications is defined and the legislation
work is done, preparation of the University form technical and structural
point of view is in progress
• Rectors representative for the Open Science have been appointed
• The Main Library of the University performs cyclic courses about Open Access

Open Access
• Implementation of the Institutional repository containing:
• Publications, book chapters, whole books, working papers
• Public information about services, platforms, non-curriculum courses
• Guides
• Research data
• PhD theses and exceptional master theses
• By default all research materials should be public
• The institutional repository should be integrated with other University systems
• Inclusion of anti-plagiarism system in the publication process
The Policy
• Gdańsk University of Technology adapts the policy based on the green way
with encouragement to publish using the golden way
• The papers should be published by the original authors – as such self-
archiving will take place.
• The repository will be governed by the Main Library.
• The policy will be semi-mandatory for scientific publications, chapters in
monographs and complete monographs. For different type of publications the
encouragement policy will be applied.
• The repository should contain every scientific paper published by faculty
members independently form it's openness.
• By default the submitted work will be made public immediately. Usage of
embargo needs to be justified by the author.
• Whenever possible the final, reviewed versions should be published.
• Exclusion from the policy requires a consent made in writing.

Basic Workflow for Open Access
Licensing
• According to Polish Copyright Law the ownership (unless transferred to the
publisher) remains with the authors
• Ways to enforce acceptance of the policy are limited
• It is advised to use a Creative Commons (as wide as possible) license for
every type of work except software
• It is advised to apply at least Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-
NoDerivatives 4.0 International license
• For software we recommend GPL/LGPL/BSD/MIT license
Access to the repositories
• On single account for all services
• Self-registration with no confirmation required
• PG employees and students can also use their university account
• Courses (https://courses.os.niwa.gda.pl) – only log-in required, no acceptance
is needed
• Repository (https://repository.os.niwa.gda.pl) – deposition requires acceptance
by the administrator, browsing is free for all
• Projects (https://projects.os.niwa.gda.pl, https://svn.os.niwa.gda.pl,
https://git.os.niwa.gda.pl) – only log-in is required for participation in projects,
first project requires acceptance of the administrator, user can than freely
create sub-projects
Summary
●
Gdańsk University of Technology is currently implementing both Open Access
and Open Science Paradigms
●
The The C2
NIWA Project (The Center of Competence for Novel Infrastructure
of Workable Applications) realized by CI TASK and Faculty of ETI allowed
preparation of hardware and software resources for the whole undertaking
●
We created a fully functional project and courses platform
●
First version of repository is also being implemented
●
The experience gained from the implementation will be used to create internal
repository and alter internal procedures of the University

Motivations • Only materials to selected courses are available online, often password protected • Publicly available Eng/Master Theses are non existent, only part of PhD Theses are publicly available • No common, widely understood and accepted policy for opening scientific publications • Students often do not come to classes!
  • 3. Motivations (2) • Increasing the visibilities of publications prepared by the employees of Gdańsk University of Technology • The requirements of EU financed projects (Horizon 2020 and Erasmus+) • Legislative work conducted by Ministry of Science and Higher Education • Global trends for the implementation of the Open Access model and the related necessity to catch up not only with respect to foreign universities, but also part of the Polish institutions

The Concept • Goes beyond typical Open Access model • Open Science is considered as sharing scientific papers, research data and results, developed software or services that can be performer by the University • Consists of the institutional repository, e-learning platform and software for project management support • We plan on including our Center of Knowledge and Technology Transfer into the process as an advisory body • Top-down approach

Realization • During the The C2 NIWA Project (The Centre of Competence for Novel Infrastructure of Workable Applications): • Institutional repository as implemented and made available at https://repository.os.niwa.gda.pl • The e-learning platform was implemented and is available at https://courses.os.niwa.gda.pl • Some courses (like platform manuals, creativity course and open and free license explaining course) were prepared • The Open Access Policy for publications is defined and the legislation work is done, preparation of the University form technical and structural point of view is in progress • Rectors representative for the Open Science have been appointed • The Main Library of the University performs cyclic courses about Open Access

The Policy • Gdańsk University of Technology adapts the policy based on the green way with encouragement to publish using the golden way • The papers should be published by the original authors – as such self- archiving will take place. • The repository will be governed by the Main Library. • The policy will be semi-mandatory for scientific publications, chapters in monographs and complete monographs. For different type of publications the encouragement policy will be applied. • The repository should contain every scientific paper published by faculty members independently form it's openness. • By default the submitted work will be made public immediately. Usage of embargo needs to be justified by the author. • Whenever possible the final, reviewed versions should be published. • Exclusion from the policy requires a consent made in writing.

Licensing • According to Polish Copyright Law the ownership (unless transferred to the publisher) remains with the authors • Ways to enforce acceptance of the policy are limited • It is advised to use a Creative Commons (as wide as possible) license for every type of work except software • It is advised to apply at least Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial- NoDerivatives 4.0 International license • For software we recommend GPL/LGPL/BSD/MIT license

Access to the repositories • On single account for all services • Self-registration with no confirmation required • PG employees and students can also use their university account • Courses (https://courses.os.niwa.gda.pl) – only log-in required, no acceptance is needed • Repository (https://repository.os.niwa.gda.pl) – deposition requires acceptance by the administrator, browsing is free for all • Projects (https://projects.os.niwa.gda.pl, https://svn.os.niwa.gda.pl, https://git.os.niwa.gda.pl) – only log-in is required for participation in projects, first project requires acceptance of the administrator, user can than freely create sub-projects

Summary ● Gdańsk University of Technology is currently implementing both Open Access and Open Science Paradigms ● The The C2 NIWA Project (The Center of Competence for Novel Infrastructure of Workable Applications) realized by CI TASK and Faculty of ETI allowed preparation of hardware and software resources for the whole undertaking ● We created a fully functional project and courses platform ● First version of repository is also being implemented ● The experience gained from the implementation will be used to create internal repository and alter internal procedures of the University
