The document provides an overview and analysis of trends in small businesses and self-employment in the UK. It finds that while GDP declined during the recession, the number of businesses continued to grow. Self-employment has also increased significantly in recent years, especially among older, higher skilled workers. Rates of self-employment vary geographically, and most self-employed report being content with their work situation and choosing it for flexibility and control. The future trends are uncertain but self-employment is likely to remain an option for those wanting more freedom and independence in their work.
The unemployment rate dropped yet again in June, to 6.1 percent. However, total unemployment, which dropped only 10 basis points in June to 12.1 percent, is still double that official rate.
Total non-farm employment increased by 288,000 jobs, making June the fifth consecutive month of growth over 200,000 net new jobs. And, this growth was diverse, with the top three industry markets contributing only one-half of new jobs, and all but two subsectors showing net growth.

Participation of Women in Public AdministrationUNDP Uzbekistan
The current stage of structural reforms is an enabling moment for the "women in public administration" focus, to become a new factor for Uzbekistan’s economic breakthrough. This stage requires effective social lifts for recruiting women at the mid-level, thereby increasing the proportion of women in executive power from 5.3% to between 16% and 18%. At the same time, it is critically important to deepen the industrialization process, by bringing the manufacturing industry’s share of the GDP up from 9% to 20%.
February 2015 U.S. employment update and outlookJLL
Factoring in sharp upward revisions in November and December, the labor market has registered 267,750 new jobs each month over the past year, well above average this cycle.
Unemployment is up slightly to 5.7 percent, but that’s because more people are looking for jobs. Labor force participation is now up to 62.9 percent—a promising sign of confidence, though participation is still near record lows.
Other external indicators like consumer confidence, hires, quits and spending all mirror the improvements seen in the labor market of late. We expect them to continue throughout 2015 and into 2016.

U.S. employment rate data and trends April 2014JLL
The U.S. economy rebounded in April. It added 288,000 jobs, the highest one-month net change since January 2012, and saw unemployment decline 40 basis points to 6.3 percent, the lowest rate during the recovery so far. The labor force is expected to reach its previous peak in May, as only 113,000 jobs are needed to do so.
At the subsector level, growth was diverse, with all but two components (information, and transportation and warehousing) recording monthly expansion.

September 2017 U.S. employment update and outlookJLL
The national labor market saw 156,000 net new jobs added in August, a solid figure but below expectations. Additionally, previous months registered downward revisions to job growth, muting some of the rebound witnessed during the summer. Continuing a trend that has intensified in recent quarters, a lack of skilled workers combined with minimal unemployment and external difficulties such as housing affordability in tech hubs have significantly slowed tech growth over the year. Even with inconsistent inflation, sustained job growth could likely encourage another Federal Reserve rate hike in the near term.

The How’s Life? report (http://oe.cd/how-is-life) charts the promises and pitfalls for people’s well-being in 35 OECD countries and 6 partner countries. It presents the latest evidence from 50 indicators, covering both current well-being outcomes and resources for future well-being, and including changes since 2005. During this period there have been signs of progress, but gains in some aspects of life have been offset by losses elsewhere. This fourth edition highlights the many faces of inequality, showing that gaps in people’s achievements and opportunities extend right across the different dimensions of well-being. It exposes divisions according to age, gender, and education, and reveals pockets of inequality in all OECD countries. It also brings to light the many well-being disadvantages that migrants face in adapting to life abroad. Additionally, the report examines governance as seen from the citizen’s perspective, revealing gaps between public institutions and the people they serve. Finally, it provides a country-by-country perspective, pinpointing strengths, challenges and changes in well-being over time in 41 country profiles.
How’s Life? is part of the OECD Better Life Initiative, which features a range of studies and analysis about people’s well-being and how to measure it, and includes the interactive Better Life Index website.
The national economy has finally gained back all jobs lost during recession, 79 months after the recession began. Not only are we back to the pre-recession employment peak—we’re 98,000 jobs above it.
The 217,000 new jobs created in May represent the fourth consecutive month of more than 200,000 payroll additions, the first time that this has happened during the recovery of late. Unemployment held steady at 6.3 percent, as did the labor force participation rate at its low of 62.8 percent.

MBO Partners State of Independence in America 2018MBO Partners
The 2018 MBO Partners State of Independence in America paints a nuanced picture of the 42 million Americans who work independently as independent professionals, contractors, consultants, freelancers, side giggers and more.
In this eight year of the report, the longest-running comprehensive look at the independent workforce, American independents emerge as strong, mature, and satisfied.
Even amidst record low unemployment and the strongest jobs market in decades, independent work remains a viable and desirable career path.
"People from all industries choose to become independent professionals,” says Gene Zaino, CEO of MBO Partners. “The key word here is 'choose.'"
With each passing year, independent workers grow in both popularity and in size.
“Independent work and traditional jobs are not engaged in a zero-sum fight, but rather, growing in unison," says Zaino.
Independent work is or has been a part of nearly 47% of American’s careers, a number that is poised to swell to 52% in the next five years.
In the 2018 study, four key trends emerged, each of which mirrors trends in the overall economy.
Traditional jobs aren’t going away. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the US economy has added payroll jobs for 93 straight months, the unemployment rate is 4 percent, and there are 6.7 million open jobs.
Full-time independence continues to be a viable and attractive option for many professionals, especially for those with in-demand skills. Companies are growing more comfortable working with independents, utilizing their skills in strategic positions, and paying them more. As a result, the number of High-Earning Independents, those earning more than $100,000, continues to rise—to 3.3 million. Satisfaction among Full-Time independents remains high as well.
The need for-and interest in-part-time independent work continues to grow. Economic pressures and the continued growth of platforms and technology are contributors to this uptick in interest and size.
The new norm is now more likely to be a mix of traditional and independent experience throughout one's lifespan. An individual's career path may include working at a payroll job, working as a Full-Time Independent, and having a side gig while employed at a payroll job. It’s not necessarily an either-or choice.
Independents remain a powerful economic force, contributing more than $1.3 trillion annually to the economy, more than 6.7% of U.S. GDP. The scale is growing globally as well; one in five serve customers outside of the United States as well as domestically.
This year's study underscores that independence will remain a viable and desired option for workers in the years to come.

New research by the International Longevity Centre, the UK’s leading think tank on the impact of longevity on society, highlights deep-seated inequalities in the UK’s changing labour market and the critical condition of the current economy.
The recently publicised increase in the number of economically inactive adults due to long term sickness brings to the fore deep seated problems in the UK labour market, according to newly completed research by the International Longevity Centre and Bayes Business School (formerly Cass).
The ILC’s analysis over a 30-year period identifies four strategic concerns:
• A shortage of active workers: There are now only 1.7 economically active workers for each inactive adult aged 16+. Despite pension reforms and the removal of the default retirement age at 65, this level is the same as it was 30 years ago in 1992.
• Too many inactive workers are ill: Of the 8.9m inactive adults under 65, 2.5 million are long term sick, almost a 0.5m increase since 2019.
• Numbers in work have increased but men much less than women: The population has grown by 18% since 1992. But while the number of economically active women has increased by 30.6%, the number of economically active men has increased by only 11.3%. Meanwhile the number of women working full-time has increased by 49.2%, the number of men working part-time is up by 130%.
• The gap between jobs and skills is growing: The UK population is expected to grow to 72m by 2040. Since 1992, jobs in manufacturing have declined by 37%, while jobs in service sectors are up by 74%. Previous ILC research estimates a shortfall of 2.6m workers by 2030 – yet economic activity rates among 18-24 years olds are almost 50% of the level in 1992 exacerbating labour shortages elsewhere in the economy.
Health inequalities are a major limiting factor in preventing people from working. In the unhealthiest local authorities, like Blackpool or Hull, health expectancy is less than 57 years compared with over 70 years in the healthiest such as Wokingham. If health expectancy increased by one year this would increase working lives by 3.4 months and significantly reduce the burden on the NHS and welfare costs.
Keeping people healthy is clearly beneficial to the economy given the inequalities highlighted above. But there is a double cost represented by a loss of income plus increases in the cost of health care and sickness and disability benefits.
For example, spending on working-age health and disability benefits is over £45bn a year and accounts for about 1.6% of GDP, higher than the previous peak in 1992 when it was 1.5%. Spending on healthcare is also far greater than it needs to be.

24. Back to the future?
• What is likely to happen?
- More of the same – people enter self employment
because they want to and are happy to remain
• What we know less about
- Earnings, Pensions and Maternity (Deane Review)
- What we are doing to bridge gaps
• Any Questions?
