Opening Sequence (By the anchor)

Hello, Good Morning Children. Look at the screen and guess “What are we
going to learn today?”

Cut to the text and Voice Over

(The text is to appear in pairs but each sentence of a pair one by one.)

Text (on board) with voice over

1.      (a) I eat a mango.

        (b) A mango is eaten by me.

2.      (a) They will support us.

        (b) We shall be supported by them.

3.      (a) She is carrying my bag.

        (b) My bag is being carried by her.

4.      (a) He rang the bell.

           (b) The bell was rung by him.

Voice Over

with sentences remaining on the board. [Let the first sentence of each pair be
there on screen].

Children, you saw in the first sentences, marked (a) that subjects – ‘I, they, she
and he do the action (at this time the subjects will be underlined simultaneously
the anchor will repeat.

VOICE OVER :

They do the action. Where as in second sentences marked (b) the action is done
by them. (Second sentence of each pair be on the screen) [ At this time the
words by me, by them, by her ‘by him’ will be underlined simultaneously the
anchor will repeat]

Learning Objectives:

When you have learnt today’s lesson, you will be able to recognize the form of
verbs used in sentences, that will help you in understanding the right meaning.
Also you will be able to change active sentences into passive form.

My grandfather built this house.

Voice Over [It can also be said as] This house was built by my grand father.

The second sentence appear under the first one.

Voice over (with both the sentences remaining on screen) Both sentences have
the same meaning. The first one is in Active Voice and the second one is in
passive voice. fJjBK d'BK tkeK ftZu pdbkt feZE/ j?< f;oc action verb ftZu (At this
time ‘built’ in first sentence and ‘was built’ in second sentence will be encircled)
So voice of any sentence depends on action verb. b/feB action verb ~ pdbD tk;s/
Subject ns/ object ~ nkgDh irQk th pdbDh gJh. [At this time ‘My grandfather’ and
‘this house’ in both the sentences will be shown with blinking light. fJj fJ; bJh j'
;fenk feT[Ife action verb transitive j?. Text on the screen changes. Following text
appears.

Subject → Transitive Verb → Object.

Voice Over

Transitive Verbs T[j fefonk j?, fi;d/ ftZu eosk ns/ eow d'B'I Fkfwb jB. eosk i' ezw
eo/, T[;dk gqGkt eow s/ j't/. Let’s make it more clear by taking an example. The
text on the goes attend next text on screen [appears with voice over]

                                                 This is an active sentence.

We can say it Passively also. by

So, transitive Verb involves 3 things. Subject transitive verb and object. [At this
time the words will be put in box, numbered and fitted.]

Songs                           (4) are          (5) sung by us.

After a short pause. Voice over with text remaining on screen. What changes
did you notice in this sentence? Let’s try to understand [At this time the display
in sequence is shown with marking arrow].

      1. Subject becomes object.

      2. Object takes the place of subject.

      3. The action verb of the sentence is changed into past participle (i.e the
         third form of verb).

   4. Helping verb is always used according to the tense of active sentence but
         the subject of passive sentence. So tense of sentence never changes.

   5. Object in the passive voice is introduced with “by”.

         Honey is made by bees.

   2. Bees are making honey.

         Honey is being made by bees.

   3. Bees have made honey.

         Money has been made by bees.

   4. Bees have been making honey. Present Perfect Continuous tense

          No Passive

    5. Bees made honey.

         Honey was made by bees.

   6. Bees were making honey.

         Honey was being made by bees.

  7. Bees had made honey.

     Honey had been made by bees.

  8. Bees had been making honey. – Past Perfect Continuous tense

    --------No Passive -------

9. Bees will make honey.

   Honey will be made by bees.

10. Bees will be making honey – Future Continuous Tense

     ----- No Passive---

11. Bees will have made honey.

    Honey will have been made by bees.

12. Bees will have been making honey – Future Perfect Continuous Tense

     ------ No Passive -----

So children out of 12 tenses 4 tenses that can not be changed into passive are :

   1.Present Perfect Continuous

   2.Past Perfect Continuous

   3.Future Continuous

   4.Future Perfect Continuous

At this time four of these sentences no 4, 8, 10 and 12 will remain on the board.
Rest sentences will disappear.

Now let’s move on and learn more about different sentences.

eJh Sentences ftZu 2 object j[zd/ jB. sK n;hI tkeK ~ fe; soQK pdbd/ jK. (There are
sentence, which have two objects. How do we change the sentences then. Let’s
see an example cut to M.M.)

A PICTURE

     Show a boy of 14-15 years giving a gift [wrapped in yellow paper] to his sister
     wearing red clothes. The sentence appears on the screen under picture. With
     voice over.

                                     gift.
     My         gave                             Here we see one subject but two
     objects

                                                  (while these words are spoken
                                                  the words as shown will be put in
                                                  boxes and titled. The box having
                                                  object 1 will have red colour
                                                  where as object 2 will have
                                                  yellow colour.

           Was given a gift


 A gift                          By my
                                 brother
               Was given to me

So what to do for changing it into passive. fJBQK ~ Passive ftZu pdbD bJh eh
eoKr/- fJj pj[s ;ob j?. fJ; ~ d' sohfenK Bkb Passive ftZu pdfbnk ik ;edk j? fit/I L- I
Subject Bkb ns/ A gift ;pi?eN Bkb. Very simple. It can be changed into passive in

two ways like (at this time Passive sentences appear one by one. First with red
box having ‘I’ as subject second with yellow box having ‘A gift’ as subject. Come
let’s practice some more sentences.

   7. Two types of passive can be made if active has two objects.

It was so easy filling up the gaps. Isn’t it? But now we shall be changing the
complete sentences from active to passive. Let’s do.

Ans.    The dishes are washed by me.

2.      Active We shall buy that doll.

Ans.    That doll will be bought by us.

3.      Active Mohan will teach you this game.

Ans.    This game will be taught to you by Mohan.

        You will be taught this game by Mohan.

4.      Active He has drawn the picture.

Ans.    The picture has been drawn by him.

5.      Active     I could catch the bus.

Ans       The bus could be caught by me.

(Note :- All the active sentences will appear on the screen. First at one go and
after a pause, the answers will appear on the screen with voice over.

Look at the screen and guess “What are we going to learn today?” Cut to the text and Voice Over (The text is to appear in pairs but each sentence of a pair one by one.) Text (on board) with voice over 1. (a) I eat a mango. (b) A mango is eaten by me. 2. (a) They will support us. (b) We shall be supported by them. 3. (a) She is carrying my bag. (b) My bag is being carried by her. 4. (a) He rang the bell. (b) The bell was rung by him. -1-

Children, you saw in the first sentences, marked (a) that subjects – ‘I, they, she and he do the action (at this time the subjects will be underlined simultaneously the anchor will repeat. VOICE OVER : They do the action. Where as in second sentences marked (b) the action is done by them. The second sentence appear under the first one. Voice over (with both the sentences remaining on screen) Both sentences have the same meaning. What changes did you notice in this sentence? Let’s try to understand [At this time the display in sequence is shown with marking arrow]. 1. Subject becomes object. 2. Object takes the place of subject. 3. The action verb of the sentence is changed into past participle (i.e the third form of verb). -4-

Bees make honey. Honey is made by bees. 2. Bees are making honey. Honey is being made by bees. 3. Bees have made honey. Money has been made by bees. 4. Bees have been making honey. Present Perfect Continuous tense No Passive 5. Bees made honey. Honey was made by bees. 6. Bees were making honey. Honey was being made by bees. -5-
  • 6. PES/ENG/X/057 7. Bees had made honey. Honey had been made by bees. 8. Bees had been making honey. – Past Perfect Continuous tense --------No Passive ------- 9. Bees will make honey. Honey will be made by bees. 10. Bees will be making honey – Future Continuous Tense ----- No Passive--- 11. Bees will have made honey. Honey will have been made by bees. 12. Bees will have been making honey – Future Perfect Continuous Tense ------ No Passive ----- So children out of 12 tenses 4 tenses that can not be changed into passive are : 1.Present Perfect Continuous 2.Past Perfect Continuous 3.Future Continuous 4.Future Perfect Continuous At this time four of these sentences no 4, 8, 10 and 12 will remain on the board. Rest sentences will disappear. -6-

How do we change the sentences then. Let’s see an example cut to M.M.) A PICTURE Show a boy of 14-15 years giving a gift [wrapped in yellow paper] to his sister wearing red clothes. The sentence appears on the screen under picture. With voice over. My A brother me gift. My gave Here we see one subject but two objects (while these words are spoken the words as shown will be put in boxes and titled. The box having object 1 will have red colour where as object 2 will have yellow colour. Active – The teacher will give Passive (a) We shall be given a test by the teacher. (b) A test will be given to us by the teacher. Use helping verb before main very according to tense. 6. Put ‘by’ before object in passive. 7. Two types of passive can be made if active has two objects. This game will be taught to you by Mohan. You will be taught this game by Mohan. 4. Active He has drawn the picture. Ans. The picture has been drawn by him. 5. Active I could catch the bus. Ans The bus could be caught by me. (Note :- All the active sentences will appear on the screen. First at one go and after a pause, the answers will appear on the screen with voice over.
