Voice is the form a verb takes to
indicate whether the subject of the
verb performs or receives the
action.

She slammed on the brakes as the car sped down hill.
The brakes were slammed on by her as the car sped
down the hill.
I have damaged your bicycle.
Your bicycle has been damaged by me.

Discuss the following Guide Questions:
1. What did you observe on the 1st and 3rd sentence?
2. How about the 2nd and 4th sentence?
3. Come up with an explanation from the ideas of
the rest of the members.

Let’s Process!!!
Active Voice – indicates that the subject of the
verb is acting.
Because the subject does or "acts upon" the verb
in sentences, the sentences are said to be in the
active voice.

These examples show that the subject is doing
the verb's action.
1. The dog jumped onto the boy
The dog (subject) is doing the jumping (verb).
2. The computer ate my paper.
 The computer (subject) is doing the eating (verb).
Let’s Process!!!
In a passive voice sentence, the subject and object flip-
flop. The subject becomes the passive recipient of the
action.
Because the subject is being "acted upon" (or is passive),
such sentences are said to be in the passive voice.

These examples show the subject being acted upon by the
verb.
1. The boy was jumped on by the dog.
• Boy (subject) was being jumped on (verb)
2. My paper was eaten by the computer.
• Paper (subject) was being eaten (verb).

Identify the voices of the verb of the following sentences.
1. He sings a song melodiously.
2. The boy killed the spider with the use of his fingers.
3. The wall was painted by my father.
4. Farmers sow maize in the rainy season.
5. Are you writing a letter?
6. The canal was dug by the workers in the barangay.
7. I will finish the job by the end of this week.
8. This letter was written by the office secretary.
9. They have informed him of his mother’s death.
10. They took all the necessary precautions.

  • 10. Let’s Process!!! In a passive voice sentence, the subject and object flip- flop. The subject becomes the passive recipient of the action. Because the subject is being "acted upon" (or is passive), such sentences are said to be in the passive voice.
