The Great Depression By Albert Ellis
Albert Ellis was one of the most influential psychologists in American history, who lived between
September 27, 1913 and July 24, 2007. In junior high, Ellis had his sights set to become a great
novelist. His original plan was to study accounting in high school and college, retire around the
age of 30, and write without having to worry about finances. Unfortunately, the Great Depression
stopped Ellis from furthering his dream. However, he managed to finish college with a degree
in Business Administration from the City University of New York in 1934. In Ellis spare time,
he wrote short stories, plays, comics, essays, and novels. At the age of 28, he had written over
two dozen manuscripts, but he could not get them published. It was then Ellis realized that his
future did not involve being a novelist Ellis decided to start a part time private practice for sex and
family therapy after he was awarded his master s degree in 1943. By the time he was awarded a
doctorate from Columbia in 1947, Ellis truly believed that psychoanalysiswas the best form of
therapy. He quickly decided that he wanted to manage training analysis. Sadly, none of the psycho
analytic institutes would not accept anyone without M.D. s, so Ellis had some trouble finding a
group to work with. None the less, Albert found a group that agreed to work with him. In a few
years time, Ellis had successfully completed a full psychoanalysis and began to practice classical
psychoanalysis.

Youth Violence Memo
Thank you for participating in our recent Special Results Minneapolis roundtable conversation on
youth violence prevention. A roundtable meeting presents a unique opportunity for City staff,
leadership, elected officials, and stakeholders from outside agencies and organizations to engage in
robust discussions.
The YouthViolence Prevention Special Report presented by the Minneapolis Health Department
focused their data driven approach on identifying trends and opportunities to reduce youth violence.
From the discussion, three interrelated themes emerged. To reduce youth violence, it requires
actions taken with youth, families, and the greater Minneapolis community. The following memo
details these themes, and suggests ways to reduce youth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, to reduce youth violence, it is necessary to make wraparound services available to youth
also available to families. Without supporting families, efforts to curtail youth violence cannot be as
effective.
Theme: The Greater Minneapolis Community Has the Resources to Reduce Youth Violence.
A consistent theme that at risk youth raise in discussions with community social workers is the
desire to have a job. Minneapolis has done a great deal of work in connecting youth to employers
through program such as Step up and Pathways . These programs give any adolescence, at risk or
not, a unique opportunity to build purpose and nurture relationships with potential future
employers. These programs help to create positive life trajectories for youth.
The Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) has operated a highly successful afterschool program for
years. Over the last 15 years, the funding for the program has declined precipitously. Limited funds
have made it challenging for MPS to keep the program staffed with teachers, relying on an
inconsistent flow of volunteers instead. The afterschool program is an invaluable resource in the
effort to reduce youth violence. Instead of unsupervised and unstructured time, the program keeps
youth focused on completing homework, developing skills, exposes them to mentors, and allows
parents to rest assured that their children are safe while they are still at

Fuku a curse of bad consequences
Fuku generally a curse or a doom of some kind; specifically the Curse and the Doom of the New
World, written in the Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, which
is written by Junot Diaz (Diaz 1). If you make a bad choice, you will receive fuku, says Junot Diaz
in the interview on Q TV (YouTube). In the interview with Slate Magazine, Diaz says that the
novel is all about the dangers of dictatorship (Rourke 3). It describes how Oscar s family s three
generations have been affected by the dictatorship of Trujillo who was the president of Dominican
Republic and different other dictatorships by Yunior s narration.... Show more content on

Then Abelard makes a bad choice again. He once has a chance to send his daughters to Cube to
live with his mistress Lydia s family, so they can escape form Trujillo. However, Abelard
chooses to believe his Trujillo philosophy that he only had to keep his head down, his mouth
shut, his pockets open, his daughters hidden for another decade or two. By then ... Trujillo
would be dead and the Dominican Republic would be a true democracy (Diaz 227). Apparently,
it turns out that his hope is just a hope in terms of his ending. Nevertheless, there is third
opportunity offered that is he leaves everything and runs away with his mistress. Once again, he
makes a bad choice that he chooses to stay in Dominican Republic. Therefore, all he can do left
is waiting for fuku. Abelard ends up being imprisoned and dying. Because of that, his family
breaks completely. Two of three daughters die in accidents after they are sent to relatives family.
The third daughter Beli is sold to a strange family as a slave. We can easily see the reason that
fuku befalls Abelard is that he makes bad choices again and again.
Also, we can find the same reason that fuku befalls Beli who is Oscar s mother as Abelard s. Beli
is the second generation of Abelard s family under the dictatorship of fuku. After a dark and

Beyond 2014: New Ways to Survive as an Independent Recording Artist
INTRODUCTION
Forget everything you think you know about what it takes to be a successful independent recording
artist!
On some level, as a struggling independent recording artist or musician, you might think that any
one of the following habits will bring you success:
Having a mesmerizing image that matches your music
Breaking a sweat
Going broke to succeed
Hanging on until a record company scopes you out...
...How far has all this gotten you up until now?
With the tech revolution going on, the music industry is reinventing itself in terms of how to
become successful. At the same time there are thousands of struggling independent recording artists
all working ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Artists can now bypass record labels. With all the free or almost free ways to download music, the
labels themselves are struggling to survive; whereas before, they were the supreme brokers between
artists and their consumers.
When tech savvy artists look at the music industry today, they see opportunity.
As an independent recording artist, you have a lot going for you. All that is left to do is to step
up and act like an Artist To be creative, improvisational, and take risks. Musicians have a lot of
what it takes to be adaptive, agile, and innovative.
Thanks to Technology, The undiscovered artist can now better than ever be the master of his/her
own destiny instead of hanging on to be discovered by the masses or record labels.
LEVERAGING THE INTERNET TO GAIN EXPOSURE
The Internet has become an immensely influential stage that artists didn t have ten years ago.
Nothing has changed in terms of creating provocative and inspiring music that can move people.
The physical avenue has just largely surrendered to digital distribution the crowds at live shows
have drastically shrunk, studio technology has become a great deal better and more affordable, and
promotional tools have become near infinite in number especially online.

Psychological Analysis Of Bastard Out Of Carolina
Psychological Analysis: The effects of an Id driven personality in Bastard out of Carolina
Psychology, the science of the behaviour and the mind of a person, tries to give us a reason as to
how someone thinks, works, or treats others. Sigmund Freud, a well known psychologist during the
early 20th century created his own interpretation as to how people think. Freud explains that the
mind is separated into three different parts the Id, the Superego, and the Ego. The Id which controls
the irrational and illogical part of our brain controls our unconscious thoughts, feelings and urges.
The Superego which controls the moralistic, perfectionist part of our brain controls our
preconscious thoughts. Finally, the Ego which controls the rational ... Show more content on

Additionally, Glen s instinct driven behaviour is shown again after beating Bone. Anney begins
to cry and begs Glen to not beat Bone, but all he cared about was satisfying his lust for Anney.
The sound of Mama crying grew softer, faded. In the stillness that followed I heard Daddy Glen
whispering, heard a murmur as Mama replied. Then there was a sigh and a creak of their bed as
he comforted Mama and she comforted him. Sex. They were making love, Mama sighing and
sobbing and Daddy Glen repeating her name over and over. (Allison 106). Glen didn t care about
Bone at all. His instinct driven behaviour for lust manipulated the emotions that Anney had into
something that he could use to quench his animalistic thirst for sex. To him it was not the
children or their feelings that were important to him; to him it was all about satisfying himself.
Finally, before working at the RC Cola Plant an acquaintance of his bad mouthed about him and
his family, and so Glen had decided to solve the problem by using violence. But Glen was a quiet
sort who never fought in friendly style. He would either have you that slow grin or whet all out
and tried to kill you. The latter earned him a little respect...The cops had had to be called on Glen
once at the foundry (Allison 22). Glen s instinct driven behaviour also comes from his urge

Similarities Between The British East India Trading Company
The Dutch East India Trading Company and the British East India Company had several
similarities between the two. An obvious similarity was the fact that they were both trading
companies that were located within east India. Some other similarities include that they both
traded raw materials. Another similarity between the two was that they had people work on
farms for them in order to get their cash crops. Adding to the cash crops, many farmland would be
taken over by cash crops. In doing so, the cash crops brought great success and wealth to each of
the trading companies; however, it also brought the same difficulties to the people. People would

It s trading posts were set up along Bombay, Madras, and Calcutta. After the collapse of the
Mughal Empire, the British East India Trading Company began to increase in success. As it
continued its growth, the British government began regulating it. For the most part, the British
government did not interfere with the East India Trading Company. The British East India Trading
Company was extremely useful when it came to raw resources. India was able to produce the
resources needed by the British. In addition, they created their own railroad network. With the
railroad network, they were able to transport their products. The railroad network had been a huge
step up for the British East India Trading Company. They were now able to transport plantation
crops such as tea, indigo, coffee, cotton, jute, and opium. Trade with many of these crops was
because of international events. For example, if a resource was limited at the time, India would
make a large profit off of it if they could provide it. In the end, the British East India Trading
Company made life in India better. It led to the modernization of India which allowed them to catch

Out Of All The Assassin s Creed
If Skyrim and The Witcher 3 had a baby, Ubisoft s Assassin s Creed: Origins would be it, and
dare I predict, Origins is bound to achieve same legacy as those two legends. Knowing that,
Origins has significantly strayed away from its Assassin s Creed roots; it does not play like an
Assassin s Creed game at all. Instead, Origins has taken a more open world, do anything you want
approach, which I think is perfect for the game s breathtaking Ancient Egyptian setting. From
exploring vast deserts to robbing visiting little mudbrick houses, Origins offers so many activities
that it is impossible to go through it all in one playthrough. Ride a horse (or camel!) through
Alexandrian streets, climb the pyramids, or raid some tombs for valuable treasure Origins is a

Theme Of Human Suffering In The Manhunt
Both of these war poems tell us about the side effects of war, however I personally believe that The
Manhunt presents human suffering in a much more effective manner due to the fact that in The
Manhunt , the soldiers own wife is trying to help him out, therefore this makes The Manhunt much
more personal, therefore it is much more effective.
In both poems human suffering is presented by showing us that even after the war, people are
affected. This is drastically shown in The Manhunt as Eddie Beddoes is being described with
adjectives such as silk and damaged , this indicates a level of weakness and delicacy. Furthermore
delicacy is also shown in The Manhunt as Eddie Beddoes is being compared to porcelain , this tells
us that though ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There will always be someone to sugarcoat what war really is as we truly have no idea as to what
the soldier have experienced. In The Manhunt Eddie Beddoes blown hinge of his lower jaw
shows us how much pain the soldiers go through, however I believe that it is also a metaphor
telling society that what the soldiers have gone through, they can never speak about as nobody
would understand. This same technique is used again only this time it s Eddie s grazed heart ,
this is a side effect from war which is that these brave soldiers can never feel the same, all their
emotions will never be the same. At the end of the poem Lauren Beddoes says that she came close
this shows us that after all her hard work trying to get rid of the barrier that was formed, it will stay
there forever and Eddie Beddoes will stay the same. This presents human suffering as it shows us
that war has left a permanent scar on this innocent man s life, as it will on every other soldier.
Once they go to war, they will not come back the same man. Carol Anne Duffy also uses a form
of barrier in War Photographer . This was portrayed when the photographer returned to .New
England. The two full stops may seem quite insignificant however they are quite the opposite.
The use of those two full stops and caesura isolates that particular phrase from the rest of the
poems, this is linked to war as in war all the soldiers and all the pain is isolated from society, and
we only know a fraction of what happens at war. I personally believe that Simon Armitage
presented this so called barrier between the soldiers and society much more effectively. This is
because Armitage s use of body parts to link to how the soldier felt was extremely

Every Man in this Village is a Liar

In this chapter Stack describes the effects of conflict on the lives of both people who have
experienced war and people who have not experienced war. Stack provides an example in the
form of her relative, John a former American marine. John was sent to Beirut to combat the
Hezbollah and whilst fighting there he experienced the true nature of war. He returned later
however he wasn t all right . He committed suicide due to the effects of war and the conflicts that
he experienced. Thus Stack came to the conclusion that after being in a war zone, you could

She realised that people of any age will do anything to assist what they are fighting for.
Furthermore, Stack lived through a portion of the second Palestinian intifada. During this
struggle countless suicide bombers came by day and Israeli tanks acquired Palestinian land in
the West Bank by night. Stack describes this period of time as complete chaos, where, violence
fed violence. Blood washed blood . Stack knew a Palestinian woman who was a victim of the
brutality during the first intifada. She was tortured during the days of this time period for being
part of an underground Palestinian political movement. Stack s Palestinian friend was tortured for
days, beaten, abused, threatened with rape by a barbaric Israeli interrogator. Although she faced
strong hostility from the interrogator, she also faced kindness in the form of an anonymous Israeli
man who sat with her hour after dark hour and attempted to help her get through the pain. This
shows that an individual can interact with both negative and positive things throughout a conflict.
Stack later faced a conflict when she wrote a feature about how the body parts of suicide bombers
had caused a policy debate in Israel. This feature caused Stack to receive hundreds of hate mails
regarding as to how she humanized [suicide bombers] by writing about them as actual people with
families.

Disney has launched its theme parks in three international markets (Tokyo, Paris, and Hong Kong).
In the Disney s globalization strategies, they have got one lucky success in Japan, one fail in
France and additional success in Hong Kong after failure in France. In which country Disney s
international business is success?
In which country is failure? Let s find out and consider, what are the causes of success and failure?
Tokyo Disney was launched in 1983 and it was a huge success even if Tokyo Disney was a copy

For example, Japanese are usually keen to adopt western cultures which mean that Disney
characters and management style were not significant problem in Japan.
Japan tends to easily accept that a foreign culture. Accept without any criticism, without the
traditional interpretation of foreign cultures. Japan s isolation in the geopolitical side is always a
strong interest in and curiosity about foreign cultures. Disney also could be a successful business in
Japan because of the generosity of the Japanese people for foreign cultures. With a great success,

Animal Farm Through a Historical Perspective
Oftentimes, examining a piece of literature art can be troublesome what insightful discovery is the
author trying to reveal? Is there a deeper, more profound truth to the on the surface details
provided? Is there a truth at all? To New Historicists, the truth of a past or foreign culture can never
be confirmed as established or unchangeable. At best, any understanding of the truth is a matter of
interpretation based on both the reader and the writer. Additionally, while the literary work under

culture in which it was written. In this complex level of historical perspective, culture and literature

At last, the author reveals his undeniable truth; the pigs, at first preaching for the well being and
empowerment of all animals, have mutated to the very things the farm animals scorned tyrannical,
overruling, and oppressive. But more profound to this truth, however, is not Orwell s application of
this to the history of the Soviet Union, but his application to mankind. By venturing into detail the
malicious practices by the pigs, he offers an alarming, but critical, nature of humanity. The book
pictures its most poignant ironies in the instances in which Orwell portrays the corruption of
Animalist principles by those in power. For Animal Farm serves not so much to castigate
dictatorship or tyranny as to accuse the appalling hypocrisy of tyrannies that base themselves on,
and owe their initial power to, ideologies of emancipation and impartiality. The universal truth in
our world is that one with absolute power, who rules in a dictatorship, cannot effectively manage
and justify a successful nation. Without clear opposition, demand for explanations of unjust

Adhd and Piaget s Theories
PART ONE What is attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder? ADHD is a behavioral disorder that
is neurodevelopmental in origin meaning it is caused by a biological problem with the brain
functions that control emotions and learning (Low Birthweight in Newborns). Symptoms of this
disorder range from mild to severe, and not all children will have the same symptoms. Although
no main source is known to cause this disorder, doctors and researchers believe that ADHD
symptoms are linked to neurodevelopmental problems (Low Birth Weight in Newborns). Studies
are being done to conclude other possible causes, including low birth weight. Low birth weight is a

During this stage, the child can engage in symbolic play, and have developed an imagination.
This child may use an object to represent something else, such pretending that a broom is a horse.
An important feature a child displays during this stage is egocentrism. This refers to the child s
inability to see a situation from another person s point of view. To test whether or not children are
egocentric, Piaget used the Three Mountain Task . Piaget concluded that the four year olds
thinking was egocentric, as the seven year olds was not. Children, at this stage, do not understand
more complex concepts such as cause and effect, time, and comparison. The third stage is the
Concrete Operational Stage, which occurs around age seven to age eleven. This stage marks the
beginning of logical or operational thoughts for the child. Their thinking becomes less egocentric,
and the child can now understand that although the appearance of something changes, the thing
itself does not. For example, if a child decided to spread out a pile of blocks, they know there are
still as many blocks as there were before, even though it looks different. The last stage of Piaget s
cognitive development is known as the Formal Operational Stage, which occurs between the ages
of eleven and sixteen. Adolescents have now gained the ability to think in an abstract matter, and
can now understand things such as science and algebra. The most distinct difference between the

In places, decades may pass without rain, and even in the highlands rainfall happens randomly
and rarely, once every 5 10 years. At Uweinat, the last recorded rainfall was in September 1998.
With so much dryness, the desert would be expected to be totally lifeless yet there is a surprising
great amount of life. There is a large depression, the Qattara Depression, just to the south of the
northernmost scarp, with Siwa oasis at its western extremity. The despair continues in a more

Remarkable mountains lie in the southern border of the country. There are a few scattered

Austrian American actor and a former professional bodybuilder, describing the true definition of
strength. As a former Mr. Universe champion and seven time Mr. Olympia winner,
Schwarzenegger has pushed the human body to its limit. He has endured pain which many cannot
understand why an individual would voluntarily do that to himself. Obviously, when someone

and Schwarzenegger dreamed of becoming the greatest bodybuilder in the world. Many would
agree and say that he did indeed accomplish that goal. Physically and mentally, he endured so
much on his journey toward his dream. Schwarzenegger trained, prepared, failed, and succeeded

What Are The Causes Of World War 1 Essay
World War 1 also known as the The Great War or War to End All Wars had a lot of reasons that
were rooted to the main cause or causes of World War 1. The main causes of World War 1 are
militarism, mutual defense alliances, and the assassination of the Austrian archduke Franz

on causing War World 1 was the the assassination of Austrian archduke and his wife. The death of
Austrian archduke and his wife was the most important cause of World War 1 because it is widely

When the bubble bursts, thousands of people will be left vulnerable to the disease, mental
problems and violence on the streets. The last major cause of poverty is the lack of employment
or income2. Without these obvious necessities, people will simply not be able to provide for
themselves. By helping one another and being a Brother s Keeper , society could begin to reverse
the homelessness problem as well as prevent it from affecting future generations.
Many people who are homeless use jail as an alternative to sleeping outside especially during the
winter months. They jump between shelters and jail because it is the only place for them to go.
A survey conducted with 363 prisoners that have spent 5 or more consecutive nights in jail in
the greater Toronto area showed that 22.9 percent of the prisoners were homeless9. When
looking at all the homeless that were incarcerated 30% of them that were questioned admitted to
committing a petty crime in order to get off the streets10. One fifth avoided bail to ensure that
they would be in jail for as long as possible10. Before being discharged 85% of the homeless
anticipated being homeless again9. This restarts the cycle which leads them to going back to jail
for a few nights of food and medical service. This is not a solution to the problem as nothing is
solved and people remain homeless.

Overview of Comcast
1. Given the current situation and the threats facing TiVo, the chief executives must rapidly decide
upon the most favorable course of action. The decision is rather difficult to make for the simple
reason that each of the three alternatives stand alone, tie up with Comcast or third, content
distribution reveals both benefits as well as limitations. However, given the existent constraints, the
second solution seems the most adequate one for the following advantages it creates:
Comcast is the largest cable provider in the United States meaning that the alliance would generate
increased access to a wider customer palette this means that TiVo would make its presence felt in
the homes of millions of new consumers, managing as such to increase organizational profits, the

company s competitive position and market perception and so on. Also, Comcast is a technological
leader and an association with them would further improve TiVo s perception within the DVR
market as well as within the IT community
Technological innovation the need to approach this matter could initially be perceived as a
weakness of this alternative for the simple reason that it implies additional costs. Nonetheless, the
advantages of the endeavor outweigh the costs. In this line of thoughts, given that the TiVo
executives agree to undergo this process of technological innovation, the Comcast executives will

Diabetes Mellitus
Is a multisystem disease related to abnormal insulin production, impaired insulin utilization, or both.
Diabetes Mellitus is a serious health problem throughout the world. It is the 5th leading cause of
death in the U.S. It is the leading cause of heart disease, stroke, adult blindness, and nontraumatic
lower limb amputations.
Etiology and Pathophysiology
Current theories link the cause of diabetes, singly or in combination, to genetic, autoimmune, viral,
and environmental factors (obesity, stress). Regardless of its cause, diabetes is primarily a disorder
of glucose metabolism related to absent or insufficient insulin supplies and/or poor utilization of the
insulin that is available. The two most common types of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The rise in plasma insulin after a meal stimulates storage of glucose as glycogen in liver and
muscle, inhibits gluconeogenesis, enhances fat deposition in adipose tissue, and increases protein
synthesis. The fall in insulin level during normal overnight fasting facilitates the release of stored
glucose from the liver, protein form muscle, and fat from adipose tissue. For this reason insulin is
known as the anabolic or storage hormone.
Skeletal muscle and adipose tissue have specific receptors for insulin and are considered insulin
dependent tissues. Other tissues (brain, liver, blood cells) do not directly depend on insulin for
glucose transport but require an adequate glucose supply for normal function. Although liver cells
are not considered insulin dependent tissue, insulin receptor sites on the liver facilitate the hepatic
uptake of glucose and its conversion to glycogen.
Type I Diabetes Mellitus
Formally known as quot;juvenile onset quot; or quot;insulin dependent quot; diabetes, type I
diabetes mellitus most often occur in people who are under 30 years of age, with a peak onset
between ages 11 and 13. The rate of type I diabetes is 1.5 to 2 times higher in whites than

a lean body type, although it can occur in people who are overweight.

Rhetorical questions are meant to sway audiences to the speaker or writers thoughts on a
subject. Antony uses a rhetorical question to not only have the crowd think of Caesar, but also
to have the crowd think of Brutus. Antony says, He hath brought many captives home to Rome,
/ Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill, / Did this in Caesar seem ambitious? (III.ii.16 18).
This exhibits skillful use of a rhetorical question because Antony not only contradicts Brutus
about Caesar s ambition, but also causes the crowd to support Caesar s character. This rhetorical
question bears the contradiction of Brutus because Antony refutes that Caesar was ambitious.
This causes the crowd to question what ambition means and what their idea of Caesar is. He
tries to sway the crowd to support Caesar by having them rethink what ambition is and what
Brutus said. Antony also has the crowd question their belief of Caesar and of authority. Antony
uses a rhetorical question in, And to your heirs for ever, common pleasures, / To walk abroad,
and recreate yourselves. / Here was a Caesar! when comes such another? (III.ii.178 180). Antony
persuasively uses a rhetorical question because he causes the crowd to question their meaning of
authority. He also causes the crowd to once again question their idea of Caesar. Antony tries to
sway the audience to realize how good of a ruler Caesar was and how rare it is that such a good
ruler exists. In addition, Antony causes the crowd to recognize all the good that Caesar did for
them. By using this rhetorical question, Antony shows how great a ruler Caesar was and that there
is no one that is greater than he was. Antony persuasively uses rhetorical question to cause the

Community Life And Civic Engagement
Community life and civic engagement are a huge responsibility of citizens, although it is not
required by citizens, it is an important aspect of a proper citizen. Residents of a community have
the constant responsibility of making the society around them reflect an advance in the eminence
of lives in the community. The simple duty of any citizen is to give to the common good. Civic
responsibilities are achieved by volunteering and choice. Volunteering, involving in positive
organizations and aids, or tutoring people in certain subjects, are all ways that people can
subsidize to the good of the community. Small deeds that seem to prosper someone in some way
or the other is still a way of helping. To learn something from the assistance that one does to
another, the deed does not have to be big, as long as the person providing the assistance is doing it
with a good heartthey can always acknowledge a lesson. Compassion and love is necessary in
helping others. When people have the opportunity to help others they may not always get a gift in
return, sometimes they may not even get a reply back. This is when the person has to realize that
the purpose of helping someone is not for the thank you or the gift, but is for the satisfaction of
their soul, betterment of the other, and the ability to learn a lesson. Assisting people needs to be
done in a thoughtful and effective way for it to create a lasting impact on his/her self and on

because of his obsession with wealth. Ever since meeting Dan Cody, his fascination for wealth has

Ultimately, it is his obsession with wealth that leads to his tragic end. Secondly, the reason of
the readers sympathy is Gatsby s loneliness. Gatsby is perpetually enveloped by solitude. Despite

finds no sense of belonging amongst those objects. Gatsby, standing alone on the marble steps
and looking from one group to another (51) does not mingle with his guests. Even at his own
party, surrounded by glamour and people, he is still alone. In fact, he is a stranger. Only handful
of his guest knows what he actually looks like, to others, he is a mystery. Equally important,
Gatsby enclose himself in isolation, he [gives] a sudden intimation that he [is] content to be

chances of her ending up with Gatsby, a poor soldier, is totally unrealistic. Furthermore Gatsby
wants Daisy to go to Tom and say: I never loved you (105) but Daisy asserts that [she] can t say
[she] never loved Tom...It wouldn t be true. (126) Jay cannot grasp the present reality that Daisy
could not leave Tom permanently, especially when the fruit of their love is already three years of

John Stuart Mill on Individual Liberty Essay
John Stuart Mill on Individual Liberty
Definition of Individual liberty
In his work On Liberty, Mill placed much emphasis on individual liberty and its vital role in
political society. To Mill, this phrase may be defined as the liberty of the individual to be the final
judge over his actions; to decide what is right and wrong and to act upon that standard. On a
secondary level, it also implies one s freedom to pursue one s own individuality. Mill believed in a
society in which each individual leads his own distinctive life according to his own unique talents;
unfettered by regulations upon thought, opinion, actions etc.
However, Mill asserts an important caveat; that which he calls `the very simple principle . He

Value of Individual Liberty
Indeed, Mill asserted that the cultivation of one s individuality should be the goal of human
existence. He wrote On Liberty as an argument against repressive laws which inhibit voluntary
association and suppress original ideas and ways of thinking, in a bid to protect the freedom of
the individual from stifling social conventions, oppressive legal controls and censorship. What is
the value of individual liberty that calls for it to be defended so fervently by Mill?
Individual Liberty and Truth
Firstly, Mill believes that individual liberty is instrumental in the attainment of truth. No one can
claim an infallibility of knowledge or a definite truth. Falsehoods are often sprinkled with specks of
truth; and truth may exists as half truths held by different people, and it is only through controversy
that the truth in the parts can be unified into a larger canvas of the ultimate truth. If one s actions
were to be censored completely, society would lose those specks of truth amongst the falsehoods,
which would be disadvantageous to society.
Furthermore, truth is very often not derived from the masses, but from the ideas of a select few. If
these people are silenced by repressive laws or mass opinion, society will be deprived of a chance

the 21st century when the government has finally started to issue tourist visas for a few
selective parts of the nation. Capital Pyongyang is one of those places, where outsiders are
allowed to visit and back on April 25, 2008, on the outskirts of the city, at Taesongsan Park, the
locals heard the sound of a ball hitting the bat for the first time. It was a six a side triangular
tournament, named Pyongyang Friendship Cup. The idea of taking the game to an isolated country
like North Korea was a brainchild of Jon Newton, the then President of... Show more content on

The Syrian connection Once famous for its rich history and tradition the ancient city of Aleppo,
has now been reduced to ruins in the ongoing Syrian civil war. But, centuries before this
massacre, this city had witnessed one of the most significant incidents in the history of cricket.
According to the written documents, in 1676, it was in Aleppo where the game of cricket was
first played outside the British territories. Back in the 17th century, the city used to be a trading
hub and it attracted a lot of British traders and sailors. By that time back in England, Cricket had
already been evolved and it was quite popular amongst the travelling Englishmen, who carried
the game outside the isles. Henry Teonge of Wolverton, Worcestershire, was one such traveller,
who came to Aleppo during that time and documented in his diary about the game of Krickett ,
which used to be played amongst the Britishers as a pastime. One entry in his diary on May 6,
1676, read, This morning early at least 40 of the English, with his worship the Consull, rod out of
the cytty about 4 miles to the Greene Platt, a fine vally by a river syde, to recreate them selves.
Where a princely tent was pitched; and wee had severall pastimes and sports, as duck hunting,
fishing, shooting, hand ball, krickett, scrofilo; and then a noble dinner brought thither, with greate
plenty of all sorts of wines, punchs, and lemonads; and

What Is Hockey In Latin America
Hockey in Latin America; the two concepts are not usually associated with each other, but
hockey is a somewhat popular sport with local children and families. Hockey is not a recent
addition to the sports industry in Latin America. While Latin America is not a region well
known for its hockey games, hockey is a sport that is gaining popularity with local families and
children. The Falkland Islands, with a population of 2932 people according to the Hockey
House in 2015, is the smallest hockey nation in the world. In a country lacking even one ice rink
to practice on, the Falkland Islands hockey team has made history by winning their first game to
ever play despite never playing or practicing on the ice before. The Falkland Islands plans on
sending some players to Chile twice a year to practice hockey in an arena until the Falkland
Islands are able to build an ice rink. Unlike the Falkland Islands, which lacks an ice rink and is
somewhat new to the sport, the Puerto Rican Ice HockeyFederation was founded in 2004, but
hockey has been in the country for a few more years than that. Around 40 years ago, Puerto Rico
had an ice rink known as the Reina de Heilo in San Juan. Unfortunately, the Reina de Heilo shut
down in 1978, but the country of Puerto Rico was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ice hockey didn t even exist in Costa Rica until 1996. A Canada native, Bruce Callow, helped
hockey become a known sport in Costa Rica by making a plastic, makeshift hockey rink in the
middle of the food court of the Real Cariari Shopping Center. The rink was long and thin, and the
pucks would sometimes fly off into the food court while people were eating, he told the Tico
Times. The Real Cariari Shopping Center is home to the only ice skating rink in Central America.
Bruce Callow was a major help in Costa Rica; he started hockey programs on synthetic ice in an
amusement park in Belen and an abandoned warehouse in Santa

The Porters Five Forces Model
The Porters Five Forces Model was devised by Professor Michael Porter. The aim of the model is
too analyse the nature of competiton within an industry. This means that the porters five forces
model can be a powerful tool (E. Dobbs, 2014). The first of the forces is competition in the
motor industry. There is a high level of competition within the motor industry as the companies
have a high level of competition between themselves especially when it comes to marketing and
innovation this is seen on a daily basis with the sometimes odd tv adverts used by car companies
in order to differentiate themselves. The industry has many firms in it that have chosen to
specialse across all areads such as cost, fuel efficient, brand image and style. However the Auto
industry is segmented as it ranges from high cost and very specialist companies all the way
down to low cost mass production companies. This can be seen as you wouldn t say that Ferrari
is competiting with KIA. However there is a high level of competition between firms. The next of
porters five forces is the bargaining power of buyer which in this case is customers. The customers
of the Auto Industry are what provides the revenue for all of the incumbents in the market. The
result of this is that there are low switching costs in the market place this means that customers
would be able to switch between competing firms for no extra cost. This ties in with the next point
which is that customers also have access to accurate

  • 4. The Great Depression By Albert Ellis Albert Ellis was one of the most influential psychologists in American history, who lived between September 27, 1913 and July 24, 2007. In junior high, Ellis had his sights set to become a great novelist. His original plan was to study accounting in high school and college, retire around the age of 30, and write without having to worry about finances. Unfortunately, the Great Depression stopped Ellis from furthering his dream. However, he managed to finish college with a degree in Business Administration from the City University of New York in 1934. In Ellis spare time, he wrote short stories, plays, comics, essays, and novels. At the age of 28, he had written over two dozen manuscripts, but he could not get them published. It was then Ellis realized that his future did not involve being a novelist Ellis decided to start a part time private practice for sex and family therapy after he was awarded his master s degree in 1943. By the time he was awarded a doctorate from Columbia in 1947, Ellis truly believed that psychoanalysiswas the best form of therapy. He quickly decided that he wanted to manage training analysis. Sadly, none of the psycho analytic institutes would not accept anyone without M.D. s, so Ellis had some trouble finding a group to work with. None the less, Albert found a group that agreed to work with him. In a few years time, Ellis had successfully completed a full psychoanalysis and began to practice classical psychoanalysis. A consistent theme that at risk youth raise in discussions with community social workers is the desire to have a job. Minneapolis has done a great deal of work in connecting youth to employers through program such as Step up and Pathways . These programs give any adolescence, at risk or not, a unique opportunity to build purpose and nurture relationships with potential future employers. These programs help to create positive life trajectories for youth. The Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) has operated a highly successful afterschool program for years. Over the last 15 years, the funding for the program has declined precipitously. Limited funds have made it challenging for MPS to keep the program staffed with teachers, relying on an inconsistent flow of volunteers instead. The afterschool program is an invaluable resource in the effort to reduce youth violence. Instead of unsupervised and unstructured time, the program keeps youth focused on completing homework, developing skills, exposes them to mentors, and allows parents to rest assured that their children are safe while they are still at ... Theme Of Human Suffering In The Manhunt Both of these war poems tell us about the side effects of war, however I personally believe that The Manhunt presents human suffering in a much more effective manner due to the fact that in The Manhunt , the soldiers own wife is trying to help him out, therefore this makes The Manhunt much more personal, therefore it is much more effective. In both poems human suffering is presented by showing us that even after the war, people are affected. There will always be someone to sugarcoat what war really is as we truly have no idea as to what the soldier have experienced. In The Manhunt Eddie Beddoes blown hinge of his lower jaw shows us how much pain the soldiers go through, however I believe that it is also a metaphor telling society that what the soldiers have gone through, they can never speak about as nobody would understand. This same technique is used again only this time it s Eddie s grazed heart , this is a side effect from war which is that these brave soldiers can never feel the same, all their emotions will never be the same. At the end of the poem Lauren Beddoes says that she came close this shows us that after all her hard work trying to get rid of the barrier that was formed, it will stay there forever and Eddie Beddoes will stay the same. This presents human suffering as it shows us that war has left a permanent scar on this innocent man s life, as it will on every other soldier. Once they go to war, they will not come back the same man. Carol Anne Duffy also uses a form of barrier in War Photographer . This was portrayed when the photographer returned to .New England. The two full stops may seem quite insignificant however they are quite the opposite. The use of those two full stops and caesura isolates that particular phrase from the rest of the poems, this is linked to war as in war all the soldiers and all the pain is isolated from society, and we only know a fraction of what happens at war. I personally believe that Simon Armitage presented this so called barrier between the soldiers and society much more effectively. This is because Armitage s use of body parts to link to how the soldier felt was extremely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

But more profound to this truth, however, is not Orwell s application of this to the history of the Soviet Union, but his application to mankind. By venturing into detail the malicious practices by the pigs, he offers an alarming, but critical, nature of humanity. The book pictures its most poignant ironies in the instances in which Orwell portrays the corruption of Animalist principles by those in power. For Animal Farm serves not so much to castigate dictatorship or tyranny as to accuse the appalling hypocrisy of tyrannies that base themselves on, and owe their initial power to, ideologies of emancipation and impartiality. This child may use an object to represent something else, such pretending that a broom is a horse. An important feature a child displays during this stage is egocentrism. This refers to the child s inability to see a situation from another person s point of view. To test whether or not children are egocentric, Piaget used the Three Mountain Task . Piaget concluded that the four year olds thinking was egocentric, as the seven year olds was not. Children, at this stage, do not understand more complex concepts such as cause and effect, time, and comparison. The third stage is the Concrete Operational Stage, which occurs around age seven to age eleven. This stage marks the beginning of logical or operational thoughts for the child. Their thinking becomes less egocentric, and the child can now understand that although the appearance of something changes, the thing itself does not. For example, if a child decided to spread out a pile of blocks, they know there are still as many blocks as there were before, even though it looks different. For this reason insulin is known as the anabolic or storage hormone. Skeletal muscle and adipose tissue have specific receptors for insulin and are considered insulin dependent tissues. Antony says, He hath brought many captives home to Rome, / Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill, / Did this in Caesar seem ambitious? (III.ii.16 18). This exhibits skillful use of a rhetorical question because Antony not only contradicts Brutus about Caesar s ambition, but also causes the crowd to support Caesar s character. This rhetorical question bears the contradiction of Brutus because Antony refutes that Caesar was ambitious. This causes the crowd to question what ambition means and what their idea of Caesar is. He tries to sway the crowd to support Caesar by having them rethink what ambition is and what Brutus said. Antony also has the crowd question their belief of Caesar and of authority. On a secondary level, it also implies one s freedom to pursue one s own individuality. Falsehoods are often sprinkled with specks of truth; and truth may exists as half truths held by different people, and it is only through controversy that the truth in the parts can be unified into a larger canvas of the ultimate truth. If one s actions were to be censored completely, society would lose those specks of truth amongst the falsehoods, which would be disadvantageous to society.
