The civilization of ancient Greece existed between 800BCand 146BC. It was located
in the Mediterranean Sea, in the southern part of Europe. It is still interesting to
learn about its architecture, defense, writing and language. The rules and legacies of
ancient Greece can still be see around the world today.
Architecture
Ancient Greek architecture was beautiful and very mathematical. Temples,
like the Parthenon, were built to honor the gods so they were large marble
buildings with lots of gold and bronze decorations. The Greeks used Math
tricks to make their columns look straight.
There were three types of columns: Doric, Ionic and Corinthian.
The Greek's houses for rich peoples are made of sun-dried mud bricks and
cool rooms around the courtyard. The agora was the place where main
buildings and meeting took place there were also markets and law courts
there. Therefore, the buildings that are left in ancient Greece tell us a lot
about their lives.
Defense
The Greeks needed to defend their civilization because there were often
wars and invasions. If you what to be a soldier you must be 18 and have
trained for 2 years in the army. They used metal armor and
greaves on their leg. They built big walls around the city and they had
navies at the sea to defend their cities.
Writing and Language
Writing and language was very important to the Greeks. The Greeks used
the alphabet for writing history and plays . The famous writers were
Sophocles who wrote many plays and Herodotus, who wrote in many lands
around the world. The Greeks copied books by hand and wrote on reed
paper with pens made of ivory. This evidence tells us that ancient Greece
invented alphabets and that writing and language was very very important
to the ancient Greeks.
Rules in Greece
In Greece there was different rules which were handed down by different
people. First men did more things than women did. While boys were in school
girls were taught by their mothers. Men acted in plays and also did the shopping.
Women stayed at home with their children. Rich men went to parties almost
every day and night. In Sparta, there were two royal kings to hand down the laws
but in Athens people voted and made decisions as a group.
Legacies of Greece
There are many legacies of ancient Greece. One was theatre because they
invented comedy and tragedy plays. The also discovered lots of the
mathematics that can be seen in their architecture and they made lots of
scientific discoveries, too. The two most important legacies were the
Olympics and alphabet which are very important in our lives today.
This report included information all about ancient Greece. It described
Greece's architecture, wars, writing and language , rules and legacies.
It is clear that Greece is an important civilization because we know that
the Greeks invented the alphabet, the Olympics and a lot of other things
that are important today.
