Abraham To Sacrifice
What was God doing when He told Abraham to go sacrifice Isaac? Is that not contradicting what God's whole message to the world is; that He is
loving and wants the best for mankind? Remember what Abraham's background was. He was from Ur, a pagan city. Child sacrifice was a common
way to appease your God. Three times it was mentioned that Abraham was a friend of God. He was a man of great faith, yet also a man of great
failure. Great faith as he left Ur, following God's command. Great failure when he did not trust God and had a child by Hagar, causing the Muslim
people. It was from this man that God would be founding his chosen people, as vast as the stars in the sky. When God came to Abraham and
commanded him to go up to a mountain

Conflict Between Joseph And His Brothers
One of the inherent conflicts in the story of Joseph is the tension between Joseph and his brothers. The tension between them is caused by both Jacob
and Joseph. First, Jacob shows favoritism toward Joseph, because he is the son of his favorite wife Rachel. Second, Joseph brings back bad reports
when he is out pasturing with his brothers. However, what truly increased the hatred and jealousy was the Joseph's dreams. The author notes that when
Joseph recounts the dreams, "they hated him even more (Gen. 37:8)." Their jealousy for Joseph is strong enough that they are willing to murder him.
However, they decide to instead sell him into slavery, and convinceJacob that he was killed.
A greater conflict is later revealed later in the story. Joseph is brought before Pharaoh to interpret his dream, and he reveals that after seven years of
plenty, a severe famine will engulf the land so that the seven years of plenty will be forgotten. In order to prepare for the famine, Pharaoh must
appoint someone to oversee the storing and rationing of the food in Egypt. Since Joseph interpreted the dream that the magicians and wisemen of
Egypt could not, Pharaoh made Joseph second in command over all of Egypt. Through Joseph Egypt is well–prepared for the famine.
These two main conflicts are interdependent in the Story of Joseph. Without the tension between Joseph and his brothers, Joseph would have never
been able to interpret Pharaoh's dream, and Egypt (and Joseph's family) would have not

Abram To Abraham: A Man Of God's Story

Abram to Abraham: A Man of God's Story Abraham is one of the most popular characters of the Bible, and for good reason. He is one of the most
courageous, spiritual, and inspiring people in all of history. He came to know of God through reasoning, and realizing that there is a greater power
behind the moon and the sun, not through lessons. He came to God; something interesting, which not many other characters have done. Abraham is
one of the best servants God ever had, and his story is full of amazing miracles. Abraham wasn't always known as Abraham. He was originally named
Abram, and he was the son of Terah. Terah worked for Nimrod, who ruled his land. The night Abram was born, the astrologers came to Nimrod and
told him of new, bright ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They said that a leader had just been born, and he was going to father a nation. Nimrod didn't like this, and the next morning, he ordered Terah to
hand over the child. Terah was smarter than this, and gave him a servant's child, who had been born the same night. Nimrod killed the servant's
baby, allowing someone to get Abram out. Abram lived with Noah for a while, but something before that, he had come to realization that God was
real. He looked at how the sun moved for the moon, and vice versa. God did eventually present himself to Abram, showing him he was right. After
he had matured, Abram went back to Terah. When he arrived, he had found that several idols were scattered across his land. While Terah was away,
Abram smashed all but one with an axe. Terah came back, and he was shocked. He asked Abram what happened, and Abram replied saying that the
largest idol had smashed the others, fighting over an offering, Terah said that couldn't happen, because stone and wood figures can't move. Realizing
what he just said, Terah went to Nimrod, infuriated. He told Nimrod about Abram, and that he was a liar, and disrespected the gods. The

Comparing Two Creation Stories
In the book of Genesis, we are introduced to everything. From the creation stories to the sagas in between Genesis is an opening to the old testament
and an opening to the book of exodus. This essay will contrast each creation story and describe each stories interest, explain how Genesis 12: 1–3 links
the stories of 2: 4b–11 with the ancestral narratives in 12–50 and connect the sagas of Abraham/Sarah, Isaac/ Rebecca and Jacob/ Racheal. The first
creation story is found in Genesis 1–2:4 and it explains how God created the world from a void of darkness in six days of work. On day one God made
the heavens. On day two God made the sky. On day three God made land and sea. On day four God created time. On day five God made marine
creatures. One... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the second creation story Gods interest was to find man a partner stating "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as
his partner" (Genesis 2:18). God attempted to bring every animal in creation to the man in hopes that they would fit as a good partner but they did
not. The LORD than decided to make a creature for man to partner with stating "then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And
the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman" (Genesis 2:21–22) Thus making man a fitting partner. The calling of
Abraham in 12:1–3 is shown as a bridge to link 2:4b–11 and the ancestral narrative of 12–50 because it explains the human problem and the divine
solution. In Genesis 2:4b–11 God noticed that as mankind began to reproduce they became more and more wicked because of their selfishness and
arrogance (Human Problem). God decided to wipe them out and start fresh stating "Now the Earth was corrupt in God's sight and the earth was
filled with violence". Before God ended flesh he saved Noah and his family because of their holiness by allowing them to aboard an ark so that they
could multiply the Earth with people of holiness. When Noah's family was told to be fruitful and multiply, Abraham was born by Noah's grandson
Terah. This links to the ancestral narrative placed in 12–50 because they are consisted of

Genesis 32: 22-32, 'Jacob Wrestles At Peniel'
Genesis 32:22–32 The passage of Genesis 32:22–32 is titled, "Jacob Wrestles at Peniel" and describes a time when Jacob, later known as Israel,
"wrestles" with God. This passage is fairly difficult to grasp although it is quite often referenced. The first part of the story, Jacob sends his family
away with everything that he had, leaving him alone. Jacob then wrestles with a man and when the man realized he was not going to win, he struck
Jacob's hip socket. Jacob demanded to be blessed by this man, who changed Jacob's name to Israel. Jacob then named the place Peniel and stated,
"For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved." The passage concludes with a statement about the Israelites and how they do not eat
the thigh muscle on the hip socket because of this incident. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is strange to picture a literal wrestling match between Jacob and God; therefore it seems more likely that Jacob was facing an internal struggle
that felt as if he was fighting God's mightiness. Jacob's struggle with God probably stemmed from his past and how he treated others. Jacob
wanted a new start and fighting with God may have been his way of dealing with those struggles. As a child, I was taught that Jacob was both great
and deceitful, and his brother Esau was out to kill him for a period of time. Jacob's wrestle with God helped him to change as a person, and to make
amends with his brother. I believe that is what this passage is about, the will to change and the power to do so through God. I believe that Jacob did
have an encounter with God, but probably not in a way in which he saw God's face in human

Abraham And The Early Journey Of The Formation Of Israel
Introduction
This world was created for a purpose. That purpose was to shine and reflect the majesty of the creator. Faith is having a confident attitude toward
God, involving commitment to His will for one's life and that His plans are for our best and flow from His love for us. As we read through the Old
and New Testament of the bible we see how the men of God are described living by their faith.
1 Corinthians 13:13 (NKJV) ... 13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
Body
Though we could look at many of the Bible accounts from Adam to Noah, Noah to Abraham, Abraham to David or David to Jesus, we will
primarily focus on Abraham and the early journey of the formation of Israel. The same principles can be found in all of these periods. God's promise
to Abraham was he would become the father of many nations. Abraham's obedience to God allow him to experience the Love of God by trusting God
at his word. When God asked Abraham to take Isaac his son, Genesis 22:2 (NKJV) 'Then he said, "Take now your son your only son Isaac, whom
you love and go to the land Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you."' . Abraham obeyed God
and while on the journey Isaac asked Abraham, where the Lamb was for the sacrifice Abraham answered God will provide and this is where you see
Abraham's faith in God. Works of obedience evidence this faith, which God actually identifies as righteousness. We see

Brunelleschi: Summary And Ironic Analysis
The subject matter for the bronze doors was filled with dramatic potential. The scene Brunelleschi and Ghiberti were depicting was the narrative of
Abraham being commanded by God to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, as a burnt offering. Abraham was thus ordered by God to travel to the mountains
to slay his son. This was especially painful for Abraham since he had been childless for so long; Abraham had to determine whether his faith inGod
was strong enough for him to remain subservient to Him in every aspect of his life. Finally right before Abraham is about to murder his son, an angel
sweeps in and commands Abraham to spare his son's life and instead sacrifice a ram.
Brunelleschi's rendering of the scene is appropriately harsh and explosive for such a dramatic subject matter. It is easy to see the raw emotion and
intensity in this piece. As Abraham aggressively lunges forward, he forcefully grabs his son by the neck. While he is doing this, an angel swoops in
and physically intervenes to stop Abraham at the exact moment when the knife is making contact with Isaac's skin. It is evident that Isaac is throwing
his head back in fear, with his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this piece, Abraham is very tall and appears much more powerful than the frail and fearful Isaac. Abraham's left hand grasps at Isaac's jawline to
better expose his neck so he can more effectually slit Isaac's throat with his knife; this gives the piece feelings of immense intensity. In Abraham's right
hand, he is wielding a knife, and he is so vehemently determined to kill his son that the angel has to actually grab his wrist in order to stop the killing.
The composition is filled with so much energy and movement that it literally bursts through the quatrefoil, which the scene is supposed to be contained

The Roles Of Divine Power-Supportinga In Iliad And God In...
Divine powers–moira in Iliad and God in Genesis–drove the actions of Andromache and Rebekah, who in turn influenced action in their respective
stories (Rothleder discussion). Andromache's influence was largely due to the way she interacted with her husband Hector, who was a great warrior on
the side of the Trojans in the Trojan war (Il. p. 500). Similarly, in Genesis, Rebekah's abilities to control domestic resources brought blessings to her
younger son, even though he was less favored by his father (Gen 25:28; Gen 27:14–29). So, while these two women were very different, they also
shared many commonalities and they both performed actions that helped the greater power in their respective texts to carry out a plan that did not
necessarily fit into the plan the humans had in mind.
Andromache's marriage to Hector meant that her identity largely resided with her husband, the great Trojan warrior (Rothleder discussion). Hector
was all Andromache had as described in her speech to him when she stated "Hector, you are my father, you are my mother, You are my brother and my
blossoming husband" (Il. 6.451–452). Andromache had already experienced the loss of her mother and father at the hands of Achilles, and she made it
very clear that she did not want to experience the pain of losing her husband in the same way (Il. 6.35–37). Additionally, she knew that she would be
nothing without Hector, and so she begged him not to return to the fighting because she did not want him to die. She

Genesis 3 Promises Essay
1.The three promises God makes to Abraham in genesis 12:1–3 is first, land and nationhood ("A land that I will show you"), second, a dynastic
kingdom ("A great nation"), third, worldwide family ("All the families of the earth should be blessed").
2.The three promises relate to the covenant oaths God swears in Genesis 15,17,and 22. God strengthens Abraham's faith by upgrading his three
promises with three covenant oaths. In Genesis 15, God promises that Abram's descendants will be delivered from bondage in a foreign nation and
will be given the Promised Land. In Genesis 17, God promises that kings will come forth from Abraham and Sarah. Finally, in Genesis 22, God
declares that all nations will be blessed through Abraham's descendants.

The relationship between these covenant promises to the future events in salvation history is God points our eyes to the future of salvation history.
With these three oaths, the Exodus, Mosaic covenant, the kingdom, the Davidic covenant, and Jesus Christ and the new covenant will fulfill it.
4.Abraham's offerings of his beloved son Isaac help us understand God the Father's offering of Jesus for the atonement for our sins. Abraham was
willing to sacrifice his son because he "considered that God was able to raise men even from the dead." Jesus rises from the dead on the third day,
just as Abraham received his son back from the sentence of death. God the father does not stop the death of his beloved son but let's Jesus
self–offering to fulfill all of the covenants.
5.The phrase "the elder shall serve the younger" describes a subplot of Scripture. The bible says that the younger is chosen over the elder because
God chooses the weaker, younger brother to show that his plans are fulfilled through his power, not that of men. The lesson we should draw from this
subplot is that God primarily uses the policy of the "elder shall serve the younger" at times to try to subdue the pride or egotism that can so easily arise

Bible Literary Devices
The Bible is one of, if not, the most read text in history, with the text being translated into over twelve hundred languages. However, how often do the
readers of the Bible analyze the text as a literary work and not an explanation for why unfavorable circumstances happen in everyday human life? The
Bible uses literary devises–repetition, paradox, parallelism, etc.–in its narrative to enhance its impression on the reader. In the "Book of Genesis",
repetition stresses God's influence over the human race, particularly, in the Creation and stories of Cain, Abel, and Abram.
To begin, in the second chapter of the "Book of Genesis" the literary device of repetition is used with the phrase "the Lord God" over ten times; the
repetition of this phrase ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the story of Adam and Eve progresses, Eve is tempted by the serpent to eat from the Tree of Knowledge–the powerful character of God's forbidden
fruit. After departing from the serpent, Eve and Adam disobey God's initial orders. Due to their practice of freewill, God punishes Adam and Eve;
God banishes them from Eden, inflicts painful childbirth on Eve, and imposes less than fertile soil for Adam to survive on. This opposition to
freewill is repeated with the descendants of Adam and Eve, additionally. Adam and Eve's child, Cain, is not blessed with freewill. Cain murders his
brother Abel in response to God's disapproval of his offering. God's punishment, to exile Cain, imposes Cain to a nomadic way of life.
Moreover, the story of Abram occurs later in Genesis. Repetition is used in this passage similarly to that of Adam and Eve's. God opposes freewill by
manipulating Abram to comply with his divine plan through persistent deal making. Abram exhibits blameless behavior, because of Abram obedience
God tells him he will discover wealth if he travels. God promises Abram fertile descendants if they practice circumcision. God also renames Abram,
Abraham and Sarai, Sarah. Without this communication with God, it is reasonable to assume Abram would not have not lived the life he ultimately

God 's Relationship With Abraham And How It Develops...
Genesis 12– 25 tells the story of God's relationship with Abraham and how it develops through Abraham's whole life. The original audience for this
is not completely known; however, there has been some evidence that it could have been the ancient Hebrews that had first listened to this story
(Brisben 43). The story begins with Abraham, who was known as Abram at the time, and his wife Sarah, formally Sarai, moving from their home
in Mesopotamia to the land of Canaan. The initial reason why Terah, Abraham's father, moved his family is not fully known, since they originally
did not make the move because God had called them. (Hill 86). It seems that Abraham's family may have had the polytheistic view, just as most of
the people had at that time. (Walton 87). In fact, "Yahweh" was not a part of their lives until God appeared to Abraham in Haran, telling him to
continue the journey to Canaan. God told Abraham that Canaan would be the "Promised Land" for Abraham's descendants. The story is presented in
a chiastic structure, with each part of the story having a parallel part that replicates it in some way. The climax is in the middle of the story, which is
when God declares the covenant and changes Abraham's and Sarah's names to show that they are new people. He also promises that they would have
a son. The beginning of the story describes God as Yahweh, which means "ever present one", and then God reveals himself as El–Shaddai, meaning
"covenant keeping one" (Brisben

A Review Of Journey Through The Old Testament
A Review of Journey Through the Old Testament
The story of this book takes place at a time in biblical history, approximately 4000 B.C. to 400 B.C. in an area we would commonly refer to as the
Middle East. In the beginning of this book we are told about God creating all that is. The primary focus of the first chapter, is created beings called
angels. In the course of time one of these angels, consider to be what is referred to as an arc angel, decides that he is greater than the Creator.
Although he has been entrusted with a high position, great prominence, and authority, he is the first in recorded history, to experience what is known
as pride. This pride will be one of a reoccurring character flaw in many of the leaders mention in this book. "Lucifer" manages to gain the support of a
third part of the angels of heaven in his plan to overthrow God the Creator. In his attempted takeover of heaven, he is swiftly defeated and cast out of
heaven along with his supporters.
God creates a new being called man, this new being is unlike the angels. Man will have a physical body, a soul, and a spirit. "God formed man of
the dust of the ground" (Gen.2:7 KJV) and gives him authority and dominion on earth. Man is placed in a garden to tend it, and he has fellowship
with God there. Adam is the name of this man, he is not alone in the garden, God created Adam a companion who is referred to as a woman by
Adam. Eve is her name, Adam and Eve have liberty to do as they please in the garden,

Symbolism In The Odyssey
Man had sinned and was separated from God, and will always be separated from Him unless there was a redeemer. To be able to bring us back to
Himself, God had come up with a plan of redemption for mankind, starting with His own involvement, working through His prophets, and then
through His one and only Son. God's plan of redemption began in Genesis right after Adam and Eve had sinned and disobeyed His commandment.
Even though they had seriously screwed up and brought His judgment upon themselves, even though they were well deserving of His wrath, He
showed mercy to them and forgave them. He sacrificed a lamb for them to cover their sin, and then used the skin and the wool to make for them
some clothing to cover their nakedness. He then promised them that there would be a redeemer one day. They had major consequences for their
actions against Him, yet He had mercy on them. This was the first step in His plot, as through them, the whole of human kind was to be born. Going
down the line of descendants through Adam and Eve, we come to a man named Noah. By this point in time, the earth was quite populated and full of
people,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay Comparing The Parable Of The Old Man And The Young
There were similarities as well as differences found in the two works Abraham and Isaac and "The Parable of the Young and the Old". One similarity
is the objects that Abram brought with him. In both works, Abram is said to have brought fire and knife with him. Also, in both works, Isaac asks the
same question. As they arrive near the sacrificial place, Isaac asks where the lamb for the sacrifice is. In both works, Abram bounds his son and is
about to slay him when an angel speaks out. Finally, in both stories, a ram is offered from the angel instead of Isaac. However, there are several key
differences that separate these two seemingly similar works.
The most major difference is the connotation of "The Parable of the Old Man and the Young". The entire story is a metaphor for war, as can be seen
in many lines. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The belts and straps that Abram used, as well as parapets and trenches, were used in World War I. The angel calling out to Abram was not an actual

When Abram killed his son, he ended up killing half the seed of Europe, and perhaps half the seed of Europe was killed in World War I. After all, if
someone is killed, their descendants will never be able to live. Even looking just at the literal meaning, there are several key differences. In Abraham
and Isaac, God is shown tempting Abraham and telling him to go to Moriah and offer Isaac as a sacrifice. However, in "The Parable of the Old Man
and the Young", the setting starts with Abram and Isaac on their journey. Also, in

Genesis : The Consequences Of Deception In The Bible
Genesis, as translated by Robert Alter, is a translation of an ancient story passed down through centuries. Within the story, several concepts appear,
including deception or, more simply, lies. Many instances of deception occur throughout Genesis highlighting the disobedient nature of humankind.
Since humanity was allegedly made in God's righteous image, it is important to note these transgressions they commit. The significance is that several
humans of the story use deception to further their own circumstances. Yet, each case of deception is never actually met with a punishment from God,
implying that it is not a sinful act but merely a means to an end. To start, toward the middle of Genesis in Chapter 26,Isaac lies to the men of Gerar
about his wife Rebekah and instead says "she is my sister" (Alter 134). Isaac does this because he fears that they will kill him over his sister since
she is "comely to look at". Then, Abimelech, king of the Philistines, told Isaac that one of his people could have lain with Rebekah which would have
brought shame on them. Lying about Rebekah allowed Isaac to feel like he was protecting himself and in the end, he got to stay in the land with his
wife and reap the benefits of the land. Essentially, his lie protected the benefits that he ended up receiving.
Secondly, one chapter later in Chapter 27, through persuasion from his mother,Jacob who is the son of Isaac swindles his father and says that he is
instead his brother, Esau. Jacob

Abraham and Moses Essay
Abram is presented to us as an old man without an offspring or heir. He is at the age of seventy–five when God comes to him with the offer of the
covenant. Abraham stands for devotion, justice, compassion, faith, tact, and personal integrity. He is also seen as cunning, humorous, and pragmatic
throughout the story. Abram is a man looking for his faith, and God asks Abram to leave his land and kinship to a land which God will show him. In
exchange for Abram's faith and compliance, God will make of Abram a great nation, make his name great, bless those who bless him and curse those
who curse him, and finally all the communities of the Earth will find blessing in him.
The covenant is a basic understanding between Abram and God that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Abraham found out that this was God's final test before the covenant was finalized. God told Abraham that all his people must look to God as their
god, and that all the boys must be circumcised on the eighth day after their birth. If Abraham would fulfill his part of the covenant, God would provide
Abraham with the lands of Canaan.
Abraham must have faith in God throughout his journey because the God he speaks to asks him to leave his lands and kinsfolk to go to a promised
land that Moses has never seen nor heard much about. God promises Abraham many things which were unbelievable or impossible without divine
intervention, so Abraham's faith is always being tested. Abraham knows that his legacy will never continue without an heir, so his faith lets him
continue and believe that he will still have a son even after he has aged so much. Another reason why Abraham must have faith is that the people
following him have faith in Abraham. If at any time Abraham loses faith, he will not only risk breaking the covenant with God, but he will also be
letting down all the people who had faith in him.
The story of Abraham changed the way the Hebrew people thought about time. The Hebrew people began to think of time as cyclical. Each cycle was
begun with the promise of what is to come, and ended with the fulfillment of this promise and the need of a new promise. This fits in with the stories
of the Prophets, as the coming of Abraham and Moses can be

Faith And Authentic Faith
'Fellowship' and 'Community' are fundamental elements to the traditional Christian view attitude, by the fact that the role of the Church is to bring
people together and provides them with a sanctuary to express their beliefs. There is a psychological explanation for this, that we are at a lesser stage of
anxiety when we seek for belonging and acceptances from others, thus Kierkegaard argues that this leads to complacency. Kierkegaard further argues
that Authentic faith is an active faith in that the movements of faith are chosen again and again, thus Active faith is for the individual in their own
solitude. Inauthentic faith is inactive and complacent, therefore complacent faith is faith for comfort's sake and not faith in its truest sense. Hence,
comfort comes from the community, that of the Church and the concept that others believe what oneself also believes. To belief in the impossible is
not really a traditional Christian... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The absolute duty can then lead to what the universal ethical would forbid; this is observed with Abraham when he seems willing to sacrifice Isaac as he
displays the universally ethical expression for what he is doing; that of hate. But, if Abraham did indeed truly hate Isaac, then it would not be necessary
for God to have requested this of Abraham. It is indeed due, to Abraham's unconditional love for his only son Isaac, that makes his actions appear to
be a sacrifice. The sorrow and aguish in this paradox of faith, is what makes Abraham incapable of making himself fully understood, to

Civil Disobedience and the Bible Essay
Civil disobedience is a nonviolent opposition to a law through refusal to comply with it, on grounds of conscience.
I understand why somebody might want to oppose the law. Somebody might have their own beliefs on what is right and wrong and they wouldn't
know when they're disobeying. But when you do know what you're doing, if you don't obey a certain law set forth for you to follow, there most
likely will be some kind of consequence for not following the law. You could go to jail, be put on restraint, have something taken away, etc. There are
a number of other consequences that could be given to someone for disobeying a law.

And if after all this you still disobey me, I will punish you for your sins seven times over. All your work will be for nothing. Your land will yield no
crops, and your trees will bear no fruit.
And after that you still don't obey me, I will release wild animals that will kill your children and destroy your cattle."
So God is telling us that pretty much no matter when or how we disobey Him, we

The Importance Of Names In Song Of Solomon
People choose names for a reason, whether it is so that the child takes on a certain personality, based on who they are named after, or so that he or
she may carry on the name of a beloved family member. Many names that are popular today are names from the Bible, since most of the biblical
characters possess characteristics that parents would want their child to have. Names like Noah, Jacob, David, and Miriam, are names currently in the
top 1000 child names in the world, and they are all biblical names. Names from the Bible are also found in many works of literature, like Toni
Morrison's Song of Solomon, a coming of age story about a young man during the mid twentieth century. The reader is introduced to multiple
characters with biblical names, which correspond to the characters' personalities. In the book Song of Solomon, the characters take on the role of
their biblical names. Reba, Milkman's mother, can most closely be associated with Rebecca from the Bible, as their names are nearly identical. In the
Bible, Rebecca is known for her loyalty and devotion to her son Jacob, whom she favors over her other son, Esau. She willingly ruins her relationship
to one of her sons and also her husband, Isaac, both of which she loves dearly. In Song of Solomon, Reba cherishes her daughter Hagar, and makes
sacrifices to please her, one of which includes the donation of her diamond ring, which she miraculously wins when she walks into a Sears store. The
winning of the ring shows Reba's

Summary Of ' Jacob Struggles With God '
Introduction:
"Jacob Struggles with God" is a selection that came from the book of Genesis chapter 32. Genesis describes God's creation of earth and his first
interactions with human beings. Throughout the Bible, there are many instances and occasions where the almighty Lord God demonstrates his
strength and power. In Genesis chapter 32, a strange man appeared before Jacob, who is the son of Isaac and Rebekah, and they wrestled until
daybreak. In Genesis 25:23, when the Lord was talking to Rebekah he said, "Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples born of you shall be
divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the elder shall serve the younger." The story of Jacob, the younger son, and the story of Esau, the
older son is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The timeline of genesis begins with God's creation of earth and ends with the death of Joseph, who was the eleventh of Jacob's twelve sons.
Although it is not possible to date the creation of earth, it is possible to determine the dates of events in Genesis. The birth of Abraham was
approximately in 2166 B.C and the death of Joseph was approximately 1806 B.C. The book was originally written in Hebrew, and its Hebrew name
was Bereshith, which means "The Beginning". Eventually it was translated from Hebrew to Greek in approximately 250 B.C. One of the purposes of
writing Genesis was to trace major historical events from the beginning of time. Many different writers wrote parts of Genesis, but Moses, the
messenger of the Lord, received credit for putting it together.
Genesis 5:8 states, "So all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years, and he died." It is a mystery to me why not only Seth, but Enosh,
Kenan, Noah, and many others lived very long lifespans. After the first flood, people's lifespans decreased dramatically and the Genesis time period
became a period of survival. Abraham died of old age at one hundred seventy–five years. As the story of Genesis progressed, people's lives became
more difficult. They were not technologically or medically advanced. The life span of an average person became pretty small and people fought for
survival every day. They fought each other for land and for power. Men worked

The Father Of Abraham : The Founding Nation Of Israel
Abraham The founding father of the nation called Israel was a man named Abraham. He was a man of obedience and great faith to God's will. His
name in the Hebrew language means "father of many." Primarily named Abram, or also known as "exalted father," God altered his name to
Abraham as an emblem of the promise to exponentially multiply all of his offspring into a flourishing nation that God would call his.God had
already visited him when he was 75 prior to this.. All Abraham had to do was obey God's every word as he told him what to do. This signaled the
very beginning of the promise God settled with Abraham. This was also Abraham's very first test from God, since he and his wife Sarai (which was
later changed to the name Sarah) still had no children of their own. Abraham showed remarkable faith and trust towards God, as he left home
immediately along with his clan to go to the unknown territory of Canaan. Accompanied by only his wife and little nephew Lot, Abraham flourished
as a shepherd and rancher. He made his new home totally encompassed by pagans in the Promised Land of Canaan. Still childless, however,
Abraham's faith wavered in subsequent times of testing. When famine hit, instead than waiting on God, he packed up everything he had and took his
wife and nephew to Egypt. Once they got there, fearing for his life, he lied about the identity of his beautiful wife and he claimed she was an
unmarried sister of his. Since the Pharaoh found her as desirable, the Pharaoh

Negative Aspects Of God : The Creation Of The World
Some key themes or repeated actions were the creation of the world. In these passages, God did not only speak into existence, but we can perceive
that there is definitely power in his word. He created the universe and everything that resides in it. Including humankind, and every creature that
walk on this planet. He also makes sure that everything he created was good. Nevertheless, with his good creation also came responsibilities with
which we are to adhere to (following his rules and regulations). However, man disobeys God, which led to many consequences we are experiencing
in the world today. Several measures of those images are still reflected in our Christians life today, both negatively and positively. One negative
aspect would be that from the curse place upon the woman, women today still endure excruciating pain during childbirth. "I will greatly multiply thy
sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee" (Genesis
3:17). Nevertheless, the positive side of that is that Eve was considered the mother of us all (all living things). Another negative aspect is that man
shall eat in sorrow all the days of his life (Genesis 3:17), something that is obvious in our society today. Nevertheless, God still cares about his people,
that even after the people turn away from him, he sends Noah to build an ark in order to protect the faithful few. It matches the name given to God's son

What Is Brokenness Essay
Brokenness is a state of mind that leaves us crushed and gasping for air as we face life's challenges. With brokenness comes unhappiness, uncertianity,
doubt, fear and disbelief.
Psalm 34:18 describes the brokenhearted and crushed person. Brokenness comes in many forms such as broken realtionships, broken promises, broken
families that ends up in grief and misery.
Today, we will address the broken women who have been thrown back by the winds and adversities of life and are crying for a way out.
It happens to the very best of us, that throughout our journey in life, life breaks us, just like Jesus himself was broken when he suffered and was nailed
to the Cross. Often we ask ourselves. ''why is this happening to me?'' What have I done ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He wants to restore us back to him because His Grace is sufficient– Brokenness can be both good and bad. Bad when its God's judgement and good
when it leads us back to him.
I remember a time where so many things in my home were broken. In one week, I experenced my car breaking down, our washing machine packed up
and my computer broke down! There is such misery when something is broken! Let alone when a woman is broken, she becomes a shadow of herself.
I have seen so many broken woman, crushed in spirit by the winds of adversity. The strongest women are those that realise that they are broken, i.e
going through a process that will end at some point. As we look into the stories of broken women in the bible, we learn that only God can restore us
and mend our brokenness.

Carol Bhakos Abraham Of Many Faiths Analysis
Liam McConnell Dr. Hall Western Religious Traditions 18 September 2016 Abraham of Many Faiths
Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are three of the most distinct and well known religions in the world. They have persisted for generation upon
generation and have by far the largest number of followers of all religions in the world. They also share some interesting similarities in their
foundational stories. Where did these faiths originate, and why do they share many aspects while differing on still more? Carol Bakhos lays this out
very well in The Family of Abraham and explains her thoughts on the similarities and differences the influential figure of Abraham shares within these
three faiths. Abraham is recognized globally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Here, over the course of two chapters, Bhakos discusses two reservations put into one: we should not identify Ishmael and Isaac or Sarah and Hagar as
separate lineages, with some being worse than others. What Bakhos is trying to explain is that over time, Judaism and Christianity have placed
distinctions between Isaac/Ishmael and Sarah/Hagar, effectively forming a way of thinking that places some people over others, while in Islam
both sets of people are treated more or less as equals. "That is not the case in Islam, however, where both sons, along with their mothers live in the
abode of Abraham," (Bakhos 153). In Judaism and Christianity, Isaac is the sole important figure while Ishmael becomes somewhat irrelevant
after Hagar is cast out by Abraham on the orders of Sarah. Both of these religions also portray Hagar as, at first, an insolent woman who looks
down on Sarah because she is the one giving birth to the first son of Abraham, but they both later come back and give her a much more docile role
after being spoken to by the angel in the wilderness. Other texts from these same religions, however, disagree with this and even go so far as to say
Sarah was never even mad at Hagar, rather, Ishmael was the one that caused her to throw them out. Regardless, however, these two religions place
very clear distinctions between the four people and effectively make two distinct branches, intimating that some people in the family line are better
than others. I do not agree at all with this belief and I agree with Bakhos in that it should not be something people put their faith into. While it is true
that all four people have different roles and have varying levels of importance to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, I believe that the view of Islam that
all these individuals should be regarded

Analysis Of The Story ' Of Ishmael And The Story Of Esau '
Two stories and One lesson While reading the story of Ishmael and the story of Esau, readers could easily find some similarities. Both stories
delineates the process of the disfranchisement of the elder sons' firstborn right, the expulsion of certain characters, and the instruction of God. Those
similarities make people to wonder that whether the two stories are just the same kind of story written to teach the believer the same lesson. This essay
is divided into three parts and aimed to prove that the disfranchisement stories of Ishmael and Esau are essentially the same story told over two
generations First of all, every main character of the Ismael narratives has its exact counterpart in the Esau narratives: Ishmael corresponds to Esau, Isaac
to Jacobs, Abraham to Isaac, and Sarah to Rebekah. In Ishmael and Esau's case, according to Genesis, Ishmael was the child of Hager, the Egyptian
slave, and Abraham. He was hated by his "mother", Sarah, who was Ishmael's mother in law according to the "ancient surrogate motherhood
customs: a wife could give her maid to her husband and claim the child as her own" () and initially protected by his father Abraham. He was the
victim who was casted out by Sarah and lost his birthright. Esau was also hated by his mother, Rebekah, while loved by his father, Isaac,
accordingly(Genesis 25:28), and he lost his birthright and the death blessing in the end. Not only did Esau and Ishmael share the similar kind of living
circumstances, they also

Abram The Promised Land
The story of the promised land began the day God approached Abram, now known as Abraham, the father of many. From Abraham came his
descendants Isaac, Esau, Jacob, his twelve sons, and the Israelites whom all played a key role in the fulfilment of the promised land. The fulfilment of
the promised land all began when Terah, father of Abraham, set out from Ur to Canaan– stopping in Haran on the way. While in Haran, the Lord said to
Abram, "go forth from your land, your relatives, and from your father's house to a land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation and I
will bless you...All the families of the earth will find blessing in you" (The Catholic Study Bible, Genesis 12:1–3). Abraham did as the Lord said and

During this time, a new King came to power and the Israelites were forced into slavery and harsh labor. The new Pharaoh also demanded that baby
boys were to be thrown in the Nile and baby girls can live. However, a levite woman went against this rule and placed her precious baby in a basket
and let him float down the river until the Pharaoh's daughter found him, named him Moses, and took the baby home. As Moses grew up he
noticed the unfair treatment of the Israelites and fled the area. Years later, Moses was called by God through a burning bush; the Lord told Moses
to help his people escape Egypt and slavery. Moses obeyed the Lord and went to the Pharaoh demanding him to stop the cruel treatment at once and
to listen to how God feels. Moses is the, "leader of the Israelites In their exodus from Egypt and the mediator in their covenant with Yahweh"

Egypt were a punishment to the Pharaoh from God and until the Israelites were set free, the Plagues would continue. After the death of the firstborn
plague, the Pharaoh gave permission to Moses to take his people and serve the Lord as he said. The Israelites finally departed Egypt and set out for

Capernaum was constructed along the edge of the Sea of Galilee, it housed up to 1,500 residents. Its location is 2 1/2 miles from the point where the
Jordan River enters the Sea of Galilee and about 10 miles from present–day Tiberias. The crest of a ridge of hills, just to the west of the ancient town,

Most Influential Characters Of The Old Testament
Abraham is one the most influential characters of the Old Testament in helping us to understand the Gospel. He lived 4,000 years ago traveling from
what is known today as Iraq to modern day Israel. He was a friend of God and became a father of faith as well as father to many nations. Therefore,
through this passage, we read about one of the dramatic story of God testing Abraham's faith. It took Abraham twenty five years to finally receive his
first heir son and God tells him in vs. 2 "Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, whom you love Isaac and go to the land of Moriah. Go and
sacrifice him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you." Wait did God just say to Abraham to sacrifice his only son? I must

God meant every word in this verse even though He knew exactly how precious Isaac was to Abraham. I mean it took Abraham until his 100th age
to finally bore a son. First lesson we can learn here is that God does not tempt, He tests us. "untested faith is no faith at all" Abraham passed the
hardest test ever known to men because he did not withhold his only son simply because he obeyed the voice of the Lord. The second lesson we
can learn from this passage is Abraham's faith. Abraham had all night and morning to be sacred, worried, sad, and terrified, about what God had
instructed him to do. However because he obeyed God and knew that God would provide an alternative sacrifice, he had faith in God. In verse 8,
Isaac asks Abraham where is the sheep for the burnt offering, Abraham replied, "God will provide a sheep for the burnt offering, my son."

Abraham: A Leader to Lean From
INTRODUCTION (1–2)
Responsible is a popular quality which has been used to qualify someone in many area of life. A teacher will rather choose a stupid boy but very
responsible student to become a proctor than the smart one but, very irresponsible. An employer will promote someone who is responsible to be
required as overseer over the one who had many degree but lazy. A responsible father will take care of his family well, a responsible student will do
his assignments diligently, and a responsible servant will do his duties and finish whatever it take.
Become a responsible man is not an easy task. Sometimes, a responsibility will come because our own mistake, sometimes it's a consequence of what
we have done, sometimes it just appeared because who we are. Whatever it is, we must take our responsibility of all of these.
As believer, we often called ourselves as a servant of God. But, the question is how much we care about the duties that had given to us. It is true
saying that, great man comes with great responsibility. As an adult, we have greater responsibility than younger one. As a CEO we have a greater
responsibility than an employee. As a leader and a pastor, we have greater responsibility than an ordinary congregation to God.
Today, we will learn from one servant three things from the servant of Abraham, how we must be responsible to do our duties.
As we read, And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things. And Abraham

Discussion Of Abraham's Argument Against Pharoah In...
In the readings about Sarah, Abraham requests of her that she claims to be his sister. In Genesis 12 when they go to Egypt this occurs. Abraham's
request of this to Sarah demonstrates a way of men viewing women more as property than as people because Abraham was worried about other men's
desires for his wife and willingness to kill him to win her. Abraham does not seem particularly bothered that Pharaoh claims Sarah while they are there,
but then God uses his power against Pharaoh for being involved with Sarah, so Abraham's lack of action could represent his strength in his faith that
God would do what was best for him.

God also, uses a different order when who is to be bless in regards to males heirs as opposed to female wives. With the male heirs, Cain, Able and Seth,
Esau and Jacob, Ishmael and Isaac (Israel) Esau it is the second whom is to be blessed. However, with the females it is the first whom is truly
blessed. Yes, Racheal did give birth to Joseph whom would be the father of the twelve tribes and a great leader to his people in Egypt and
Benjamin would be the leader of ten tribes. However, it is through God's plan and His desires that all must be achieved. Aside from the human
frailties and lack of faith in God, all must proceed according to Gods plan and Gods will. Through Genesis, one sees stories or tales of lack of faith,
patience, and belief in the Divine Lord of Abrams people. All of the protagonists of Genesis in one way or another tried to God's way or will.

Abraham And Fulfillment In Genesis : The Book Of Genesis
The book of Genesis began with the covenant with Abraham, which was a binding– relationship with God. God promised numerous descendants, land,
and a relationship with him. God's first blessing would provide Abraham with numerous descendants. In turn, God would make Abraham and his
descendants a great nation. His second blessing would provide him and his family with a place to call home. His third blessing stated that
Abraham would have a relationship with God. This meant that, anyone who blessed Abraham would be blessed by God. On the other hand,
anyone that cursed him would be cursed in return. In order for these promises to take place, Abraham and all of his male members and
descendants were circumcised to let God know that they belonged to him. The Pentatuach offered the reader hope in the fulfillment of the
Abrahamic covenant because the promises were based solely in the obedience of Abraham and the Israelite people. We can believe that the
Abrahamic covenant would be fulfilled when God called Abraham to leave his country, relatives, and family. By doing this, he would visit the land
that God was going to give him. God said, "I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to
others" (Genesis 12:2 NLT). The land that the Lord took Abraham too, was the land that would be given to him and his descendants. After Abraham
was gone, his descendants would be in possession of the land. In the beginning, Abraham had a vision,

Comparing the Bible and Margaret Laurence's The Stone Angel: An Examination of Archetypal References
Often times great novels and plays allude to religion, to mythology, or to other literary works for dramatic purposes. Shakespearean plays are perfect
examples. Allusions help the reader or spectator better understand, through visualization, a character or an event in a novel. In some cases, the
characters, the events, or a series of events are structured according to the people and the action in other stories, whether the stories be religious,
mythological, classical, or historical. The character or the event, therefore, becomes a prototype of the character or event alluded to. A prototypical

How do the two Hagars resemble each other? Both women hold relatively similar social positions. The Biblical Hagar is an Egyptian bondwoman
bought as a servant for Sarah, Abram's wife. Hagar, by law, is bound to Sarah. Her freedom and spirit are restricted, or dictated, by Abram and
Sarah. This ownership extends as far as Abram having possession of Hagar's body. When Sarah does not or cannot give Abram a child, Hagar is
expected to do so. Dutifully, she bears him a son named Ishmael.
In the same fashion that the law binds the Biblical Hagar to Abram and Sarah, Hagar Shipley is bound by – as D. Blewett points out – the Currie code
of values, the Shipley freedom, and the Manawakan elitist attitude, in addition to her own pride (Blewett 36). Hagar Shipley is a modernised version
of the Biblical Hagar, in that, people can no longer be bound as slaves in western culture but are, quite often, bound by personal or social restraints,
like Hagar is. Hagar's freedom is limited by the conflicting influences – internal versus external – in her own life. The Currie virtue keeps Hagar from
expressing any outward form of emotion, which, ultimately, limits or ruins the majority of her relationships, including her marriage to Brampton
Shipley. Initially attracted to the Shipley casualness and freedom, because it is the exact opposite to the Currie conformity, Hagar marries Bram, a

Sarah Imeinu Research Paper
There are four great women of the Pentateuch, but I think Sarah is the greatest of all. The following is the main background information about Sarah.
Sarah Imeinu is the wife of Abraham and Mother of the Jewish Nation. Sarah was the first matriarch, and Abraham was the first patriarch (father), of
our Jewish people. She was born and raised from the city of Ur, Kasdim, the Sumerian city of Ur.
Sarah's early life consists of many different names for herself. As a young girl, she was originally known as Yisach (Jessica), which means "to see."
She is said to have been born blessed with divine inspiration. She was exceedingly beautiful, so her original name reflected her beauty. She was a
prophetess and had the ability to see into the future. Another reason for the name "Yisach" was because people used to gaze at her beauty. She changed

world a changed place because of her strength and insight. The most impressive thing about Sarah to me was her popularity, power, and strength. Siftei
Chachamim, a famed 17th–century Torah commentator, wrote that Sarah's level of prophecy was actually superior to that of Abraham. It is said that
Sarah was such a powerful prophetess that God spoke to her directly, while to the others he spoke through a messenger. She was entirely free of sin,
and she was exceptionally modest. One event that changed Sarah's life was her giving birth to Isaac. God made a covenant with Abraham. This was
that his wife (Sarah) would conceive a son. The couple both laughed at this promise. God's covenant come true and Sarah gave birth to a son named
Isaac. His name is ironic because it means

Summary Of ' The Lord 's Messenger ' Essay
In verse nine, I observe that the Lord's messenger asks Hagar to return to a life of servitude despite ill treatment from Sarai. I now question why the
Lord might want Hagar to endure this mistreatment, but in verse ten the messenger says that Hagar will be rewarded and given so many children that
they cannot be counted. 1 Peter 2:18 may offer some insight as to why God asks Hagar to return to her master, it says, "Household slaves, submit by
accepting the authority of your masters with all respect. Do this not only to good and kind masters but also to those who are harsh." I still wonder why
the Lord requests her to endure this mistreatment.
Verses nine and ten remind me of a couple reoccurring themes from the bible which may help answer some my questions. The first theme concerns
God promising many descendants to those who trust in him. Perhaps many descendants embody the greatest reward of this time. The second theme of
this passage deals with God uplifting and supporting the marginalized, as highlighted in Matthew 20:16, "Those who are last shall be first and those
who are first shall be last." In verses 11–12 the Lord's messenger tells Hagar that the Lord has heard of her mistreatment and will thus grant her a son
named Ishmael. In verse 12, I observe that Ishmael will be a wild mule of a man, who will fight everyone and live at odds with his relatives. I wonder
why the author portrays Ishmael's demeanor of fighting as a positive attribute.
In verses 13 and 14, Hagar

Essay about Sarah, the Evil Mistress
Sarah, the Evil Mistress
Although Hagar flaunts her pregnancy with Abraham in the face of Sarah who is barren, Sarah is ultimately responsible for generating trouble in
Abraham's household. Through Sarah's decision to give Hagar to Abraham, Sarah's jealousy and anger towards Hagar's reaction to conception, and also
Sarah's harsh treatment of Hagar, we are able to understand why Sarah is truly the one accountable for the negative circumstances throughout her
relationship with Hagar.
Initially, in Genesis 11:30 we feel remorse for Sarai in her barrenness. Repeatedly it is expressed that Sarai is barren. Sharon Jeansonne explains,
"Indeed, Sarai's childlessness is predominant in most of the scenes that concern her" (15). Sarai's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Now, let us look at Hagar's position in the situation. Looking at her status we see that she has no authority and no control over her future. She is
wholly under the demands of her mistress Sarai (Jeansonne 43). Hagar is not even introduced as a person, but merely as a maidservant. She is only
referred to by titles such as, "Sarai's maidservant" or "her" or "your slave–woman." Sarai and Abram do not even give her the status of a person who
deserves a name. Due to her lack of power and control, Hagar was given no choice in having a son for Sarai and Abram. The verse reads in Genesis
16:4, "He cohabited with Hagar and she conceived..." This is all we are given; none of Hagar's opinions or feelings are shared with the readers, the
narrator remains silent about Hagar in the situation (Jeansonne 44).
Barrenness was always blamed on the woman in ancient near eastern times, although it was not always the case. Since Hagar becomes pregnant, it is
obvious that Sarai is in fact, the sterile one. After conception, Hagar realizes her status has changed and Frymer–Kensky puts it clearly saying, "Hagar
knows that she has something Sarai doesn't have, a child in her womb, and this knowledge makes her cease to consider Sarai's status above her own"
(228). In fact, there were three ancient Near Eastern marriage contracts that stated after a certain number of years, the wife must give her slave to her
husband (227). Almost inevitably then, this change in attitude

Abraham To Sacrifice

  • 1. Abraham To Sacrifice What was God doing when He told Abraham to go sacrifice Isaac? Is that not contradicting what God's whole message to the world is; that He is loving and wants the best for mankind? Remember what Abraham's background was. He was from Ur, a pagan city. Child sacrifice was a common way to appease your God. Three times it was mentioned that Abraham was a friend of God. He was a man of great faith, yet also a man of great failure. Great faith as he left Ur, following God's command. Great failure when he did not trust God and had a child by Hagar, causing the Muslim people. It was from this man that God would be founding his chosen people, as vast as the stars in the sky. When God came to Abraham and commanded him to go up to a mountain ... • 2. Conflict Between Joseph And His Brothers One of the inherent conflicts in the story of Joseph is the tension between Joseph and his brothers. The tension between them is caused by both Jacob and Joseph. First, Jacob shows favoritism toward Joseph, because he is the son of his favorite wife Rachel. Second, Joseph brings back bad reports when he is out pasturing with his brothers. However, what truly increased the hatred and jealousy was the Joseph's dreams. The author notes that when Joseph recounts the dreams, "they hated him even more (Gen. 37:8)." Their jealousy for Joseph is strong enough that they are willing to murder him. However, they decide to instead sell him into slavery, and convinceJacob that he was killed. A greater conflict is later revealed later in the story. Joseph is brought before Pharaoh to interpret his dream, and he reveals that after seven years of plenty, a severe famine will engulf the land so that the seven years of plenty will be forgotten. In order to prepare for the famine, Pharaoh must appoint someone to oversee the storing and rationing of the food in Egypt. Since Joseph interpreted the dream that the magicians and wisemen of Egypt could not, Pharaoh made Joseph second in command over all of Egypt. Through Joseph Egypt is well–prepared for the famine. These two main conflicts are interdependent in the Story of Joseph. Without the tension between Joseph and his brothers, Joseph would have never been able to interpret Pharaoh's dream, and Egypt (and Joseph's family) would have not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Abram To Abraham: A Man Of God's Story Robert McDaniel Mrs. Hunter Old Testament 29 September 2015 Abram to Abraham: A Man of God's Story Abraham is one of the most popular characters of the Bible, and for good reason. He is one of the most courageous, spiritual, and inspiring people in all of history. He came to know of God through reasoning, and realizing that there is a greater power behind the moon and the sun, not through lessons. He came to God; something interesting, which not many other characters have done. Abraham is one of the best servants God ever had, and his story is full of amazing miracles. Abraham wasn't always known as Abraham. He was originally named Abram, and he was the son of Terah. Terah worked for Nimrod, who ruled his land. The night Abram was born, the astrologers came to Nimrod and told him of new, bright ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They said that a leader had just been born, and he was going to father a nation. Nimrod didn't like this, and the next morning, he ordered Terah to hand over the child. Terah was smarter than this, and gave him a servant's child, who had been born the same night. Nimrod killed the servant's baby, allowing someone to get Abram out. Abram lived with Noah for a while, but something before that, he had come to realization that God was real. He looked at how the sun moved for the moon, and vice versa. God did eventually present himself to Abram, showing him he was right. After he had matured, Abram went back to Terah. When he arrived, he had found that several idols were scattered across his land. While Terah was away, Abram smashed all but one with an axe. Terah came back, and he was shocked. He asked Abram what happened, and Abram replied saying that the largest idol had smashed the others, fighting over an offering, Terah said that couldn't happen, because stone and wood figures can't move. Realizing what he just said, Terah went to Nimrod, infuriated. He told Nimrod about Abram, and that he was a liar, and disrespected the gods. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Comparing Two Creation Stories In the book of Genesis, we are introduced to everything. From the creation stories to the sagas in between Genesis is an opening to the old testament and an opening to the book of exodus. This essay will contrast each creation story and describe each stories interest, explain how Genesis 12: 1–3 links the stories of 2: 4b–11 with the ancestral narratives in 12–50 and connect the sagas of Abraham/Sarah, Isaac/ Rebecca and Jacob/ Racheal. The first creation story is found in Genesis 1–2:4 and it explains how God created the world from a void of darkness in six days of work. On day one God made the heavens. On day two God made the sky. On day three God made land and sea. On day four God created time. On day five God made marine creatures. One... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the second creation story Gods interest was to find man a partner stating "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner" (Genesis 2:18). God attempted to bring every animal in creation to the man in hopes that they would fit as a good partner but they did not. The LORD than decided to make a creature for man to partner with stating "then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman" (Genesis 2:21–22) Thus making man a fitting partner. The calling of Abraham in 12:1–3 is shown as a bridge to link 2:4b–11 and the ancestral narrative of 12–50 because it explains the human problem and the divine solution. In Genesis 2:4b–11 God noticed that as mankind began to reproduce they became more and more wicked because of their selfishness and arrogance (Human Problem). God decided to wipe them out and start fresh stating "Now the Earth was corrupt in God's sight and the earth was filled with violence". Before God ended flesh he saved Noah and his family because of their holiness by allowing them to aboard an ark so that they could multiply the Earth with people of holiness. When Noah's family was told to be fruitful and multiply, Abraham was born by Noah's grandson Terah. This links to the ancestral narrative placed in 12–50 because they are consisted of ... • 5. Genesis 32: 22-32, 'Jacob Wrestles At Peniel' Genesis 32:22–32 The passage of Genesis 32:22–32 is titled, "Jacob Wrestles at Peniel" and describes a time when Jacob, later known as Israel, "wrestles" with God. This passage is fairly difficult to grasp although it is quite often referenced. The first part of the story, Jacob sends his family away with everything that he had, leaving him alone. Jacob then wrestles with a man and when the man realized he was not going to win, he struck Jacob's hip socket. Jacob demanded to be blessed by this man, who changed Jacob's name to Israel. Jacob then named the place Peniel and stated, "For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved." The passage concludes with a statement about the Israelites and how they do not eat the thigh muscle on the hip socket because of this incident. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is strange to picture a literal wrestling match between Jacob and God; therefore it seems more likely that Jacob was facing an internal struggle that felt as if he was fighting God's mightiness. Jacob's struggle with God probably stemmed from his past and how he treated others. Jacob wanted a new start and fighting with God may have been his way of dealing with those struggles. As a child, I was taught that Jacob was both great and deceitful, and his brother Esau was out to kill him for a period of time. Jacob's wrestle with God helped him to change as a person, and to make amends with his brother. I believe that is what this passage is about, the will to change and the power to do so through God. I believe that Jacob did have an encounter with God, but probably not in a way in which he saw God's face in human ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Abraham And The Early Journey Of The Formation Of Israel Introduction This world was created for a purpose. That purpose was to shine and reflect the majesty of the creator. Faith is having a confident attitude toward God, involving commitment to His will for one's life and that His plans are for our best and flow from His love for us. As we read through the Old and New Testament of the bible we see how the men of God are described living by their faith. 1 Corinthians 13:13 (NKJV) ... 13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. Body Though we could look at many of the Bible accounts from Adam to Noah, Noah to Abraham, Abraham to David or David to Jesus, we will primarily focus on Abraham and the early journey of the formation of Israel. The same principles can be found in all of these periods. God's promise to Abraham was he would become the father of many nations. Abraham's obedience to God allow him to experience the Love of God by trusting God at his word. When God asked Abraham to take Isaac his son, Genesis 22:2 (NKJV) 'Then he said, "Take now your son your only son Isaac, whom you love and go to the land Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you."' . Abraham obeyed God and while on the journey Isaac asked Abraham, where the Lamb was for the sacrifice Abraham answered God will provide and this is where you see Abraham's faith in God. The scene Brunelleschi and Ghiberti were depicting was the narrative of Abraham being commanded by God to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, as a burnt offering. Abraham was thus ordered by God to travel to the mountains to slay his son. This was especially painful for Abraham since he had been childless for so long; Abraham had to determine whether his faith inGod was strong enough for him to remain subservient to Him in every aspect of his life. Finally right before Abraham is about to murder his son, an angel sweeps in and commands Abraham to spare his son's life and instead sacrifice a ram. Brunelleschi's rendering of the scene is appropriately harsh and explosive for such a dramatic subject matter. It is easy to see the raw emotion and intensity in this piece. As Abraham aggressively lunges forward, he forcefully grabs his son by the neck. While he is doing this, an angel swoops in and physically intervenes to stop Abraham at the exact moment when the knife is making contact with Isaac's skin. It is evident that Isaac is throwing his head back in fear, with his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Abraham's right hand, he is wielding a knife, and he is so vehemently determined to kill his son that the angel has to actually grab his wrist in order to stop the killing. • 8. The Roles Of Divine Power-Supportinga In Iliad And God In... Divine powers–moira in Iliad and God in Genesis–drove the actions of Andromache and Rebekah, who in turn influenced action in their respective stories (Rothleder discussion). Andromache's influence was largely due to the way she interacted with her husband Hector, who was a great warrior on the side of the Trojans in the Trojan war (Il. p. 500). Similarly, in Genesis, Rebekah's abilities to control domestic resources brought blessings to her younger son, even though he was less favored by his father (Gen 25:28; Gen 27:14–29). So, while these two women were very different, they also shared many commonalities and they both performed actions that helped the greater power in their respective texts to carry out a plan that did not necessarily fit into the plan the humans had in mind. Andromache's marriage to Hector meant that her identity largely resided with her husband, the great Trojan warrior (Rothleder discussion). Hector was all Andromache had as described in her speech to him when she stated "Hector, you are my father, you are my mother, You are my brother and my blossoming husband" (Il. 6.451–452). Andromache had already experienced the loss of her mother and father at the hands of Achilles, and she made it very clear that she did not want to experience the pain of losing her husband in the same way (Il. 6.35–37). Additionally, she knew that she would be nothing without Hector, and so she begged him not to return to the fighting because she did not want him to die. She ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

God strengthens Abraham's faith by upgrading his three promises with three covenant oaths. In Genesis 15, God promises that Abram's descendants will be delivered from bondage in a foreign nation and will be given the Promised Land. God the father does not stop the death of his beloved son but let's Jesus self–offering to fulfill all of the covenants. 5.The phrase "the elder shall serve the younger" describes a subplot of Scripture. The bible says that the younger is chosen over the elder because God chooses the weaker, younger brother to show that his plans are fulfilled through his power, not that of men. The lesson we should draw from this subplot is that God primarily uses the policy of the "elder shall serve the younger" at times to try to subdue the pride or egotism that can so easily arise in ... • 11. Bible Literary Devices The Bible is one of, if not, the most read text in history, with the text being translated into over twelve hundred languages. However, how often do the readers of the Bible analyze the text as a literary work and not an explanation for why unfavorable circumstances happen in everyday human life? The Bible uses literary devises–repetition, paradox, parallelism, etc.–in its narrative to enhance its impression on the reader. In the "Book of Genesis", repetition stresses God's influence over the human race, particularly, in the Creation and stories of Cain, Abel, and Abram. To begin, in the second chapter of the "Book of Genesis" the literary device of repetition is used with the phrase "the Lord God" over ten times; the repetition of this phrase ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the story of Adam and Eve progresses, Eve is tempted by the serpent to eat from the Tree of Knowledge–the powerful character of God's forbidden fruit. After departing from the serpent, Eve and Adam disobey God's initial orders. Due to their practice of freewill, God punishes Adam and Eve; God banishes them from Eden, inflicts painful childbirth on Eve, and imposes less than fertile soil for Adam to survive on. This opposition to freewill is repeated with the descendants of Adam and Eve, additionally. Adam and Eve's child, Cain, is not blessed with freewill. Cain murders his brother Abel in response to God's disapproval of his offering. God's punishment, to exile Cain, imposes Cain to a nomadic way of life. Moreover, the story of Abram occurs later in Genesis. Repetition is used in this passage similarly to that of Adam and Eve's. God opposes freewill by manipulating Abram to comply with his divine plan through persistent deal making. Abram exhibits blameless behavior, because of Abram obedience God tells him he will discover wealth if he travels. God promises Abram fertile descendants if they practice circumcision. • 12. God 's Relationship With Abraham And How It Develops... Genesis 12– 25 tells the story of God's relationship with Abraham and how it develops through Abraham's whole life. The original audience for this is not completely known; however, there has been some evidence that it could have been the ancient Hebrews that had first listened to this story (Brisben 43). The story begins with Abraham, who was known as Abram at the time, and his wife Sarah, formally Sarai, moving from their home in Mesopotamia to the land of Canaan. The initial reason why Terah, Abraham's father, moved his family is not fully known, since they originally did not make the move because God had called them. (Hill 86). It seems that Abraham's family may have had the polytheistic view, just as most of the people had at that time. (Walton 87). In fact, "Yahweh" was not a part of their lives until God appeared to Abraham in Haran, telling him to continue the journey to Canaan. God told Abraham that Canaan would be the "Promised Land" for Abraham's descendants. The story is presented in a chiastic structure, with each part of the story having a parallel part that replicates it in some way. The climax is in the middle of the story, which is when God declares the covenant and changes Abraham's and Sarah's names to show that they are new people. He also promises that they would have a son. The beginning of the story describes God as Yahweh, which means "ever present one", and then God reveals himself as El–Shaddai, meaning "covenant keeping one" (Brisben ... A Review Of Journey Through The Old Testament A Review of Journey Through the Old Testament The story of this book takes place at a time in biblical history, approximately 4000 B.C. to 400 B.C. in an area we would commonly refer to as the Middle East. In the beginning of this book we are told about God creating all that is. The primary focus of the first chapter, is created beings called angels. In the course of time one of these angels, consider to be what is referred to as an arc angel, decides that he is greater than the Creator. Although he has been entrusted with a high position, great prominence, and authority, he is the first in recorded history, to experience what is known as pride. This pride will be one of a reoccurring character flaw in many of the leaders mention in this book. "Lucifer" manages to gain the support of a third part of the angels of heaven in his plan to overthrow God the Creator. In his attempted takeover of heaven, he is swiftly defeated and cast out of heaven along with his supporters. God creates a new being called man, this new being is unlike the angels. Man will have a physical body, a soul, and a spirit. "God formed man of the dust of the ground" (Gen.2:7 KJV) and gives him authority and dominion on earth. Man is placed in a garden to tend it, and he has fellowship with God there. To be able to bring us back to Himself, God had come up with a plan of redemption for mankind, starting with His own involvement, working through His prophets, and then through His one and only Son. God's plan of redemption began in Genesis right after Adam and Eve had sinned and disobeyed His commandment. Even though they had seriously screwed up and brought His judgment upon themselves, even though they were well deserving of His wrath, He showed mercy to them and forgave them. He sacrificed a lamb for them to cover their sin, and then used the skin and the wool to make for them some clothing to cover their nakedness. He then promised them that there would be a redeemer one day. They had major consequences for their actions against Him, yet He had mercy on them. One similarity is the objects that Abram brought with him. In both works, Abram is said to have brought fire and knife with him. Also, in both works, Isaac asks the same question. As they arrive near the sacrificial place, Isaac asks where the lamb for the sacrifice is. In both works, Abram bounds his son and is about to slay him when an angel speaks out. Finally, in both stories, a ram is offered from the angel instead of Isaac. However, there are several key differences that separate these two seemingly similar works. • 16. Genesis : The Consequences Of Deception In The Bible Genesis, as translated by Robert Alter, is a translation of an ancient story passed down through centuries. Within the story, several concepts appear, including deception or, more simply, lies. Many instances of deception occur throughout Genesis highlighting the disobedient nature of humankind. Since humanity was allegedly made in God's righteous image, it is important to note these transgressions they commit. The significance is that several humans of the story use deception to further their own circumstances. Yet, each case of deception is never actually met with a punishment from God, implying that it is not a sinful act but merely a means to an end. To start, toward the middle of Genesis in Chapter 26,Isaac lies to the men of Gerar about his wife Rebekah and instead says "she is my sister" (Alter 134). Isaac does this because he fears that they will kill him over his sister since she is "comely to look at". Then, Abimelech, king of the Philistines, told Isaac that one of his people could have lain with Rebekah which would have brought shame on them. Lying about Rebekah allowed Isaac to feel like he was protecting himself and in the end, he got to stay in the land with his wife and reap the benefits of the land. Essentially, his lie protected the benefits that he ended up receiving. Secondly, one chapter later in Chapter 27, through persuasion from his mother,Jacob who is the son of Isaac swindles his father and says that he is instead his brother, Esau. Jacob ... God told Abraham that all his people must look to God as their god, and that all the boys must be circumcised on the eighth day after their birth. If Abraham would fulfill his part of the covenant, God would provide Abraham with the lands of Canaan. Abraham must have faith in God throughout his journey because the God he speaks to asks him to leave his lands and kinsfolk to go to a promised land that Moses has never seen nor heard much about. God promises Abraham many things which were unbelievable or impossible without divine intervention, so Abraham's faith is always being tested. Abraham knows that his legacy will never continue without an heir, so his faith lets him continue and believe that he will still have a son even after he has aged so much. Another reason why Abraham must have faith is that the people following him have faith in Abraham. If at any time Abraham loses faith, he will not only risk breaking the covenant with God, but he will also be letting down all the people who had faith in him. The story of Abraham changed the way the Hebrew people thought about time. The Hebrew people began to think of time as cyclical. • 18. Faith And Authentic Faith 'Fellowship' and 'Community' are fundamental elements to the traditional Christian view attitude, by the fact that the role of the Church is to bring people together and provides them with a sanctuary to express their beliefs. There is a psychological explanation for this, that we are at a lesser stage of anxiety when we seek for belonging and acceptances from others, thus Kierkegaard argues that this leads to complacency. Kierkegaard further argues that Authentic faith is an active faith in that the movements of faith are chosen again and again, thus Active faith is for the individual in their own solitude. Inauthentic faith is inactive and complacent, therefore complacent faith is faith for comfort's sake and not faith in its truest sense. Hence, comfort comes from the community, that of the Church and the concept that others believe what oneself also believes. To belief in the impossible is not really a traditional Christian... Although it is not possible to date the creation of earth, it is possible to determine the dates of events in Genesis. The birth of Abraham was approximately in 2166 B.C and the death of Joseph was approximately 1806 B.C. The book was originally written in Hebrew, and its Hebrew name was Bereshith, which means "The Beginning". Eventually it was translated from Hebrew to Greek in approximately 250 B.C. One of the purposes of writing Genesis was to trace major historical events from the beginning of time. Many different writers wrote parts of Genesis, but Moses, the messenger of the Lord, received credit for putting it together. Genesis 5:8 states, "So all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years, and he died." It is a mystery to me why not only Seth, but Enosh, Kenan, Noah, and many others lived very long lifespans. In these passages, God did not only speak into existence, but we can perceive that there is definitely power in his word. He created the universe and everything that resides in it. Including humankind, and every creature that walk on this planet. He also makes sure that everything he created was good. Nevertheless, with his good creation also came responsibilities with which we are to adhere to (following his rules and regulations). However, man disobeys God, which led to many consequences we are experiencing in the world today. Several measures of those images are still reflected in our Christians life today, both negatively and positively. One negative aspect would be that from the curse place upon the woman, women today still endure excruciating pain during childbirth. "I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee" (Genesis 3:17). Nevertheless, the positive side of that is that Eve was considered the mother of us all (all living things). Another negative aspect is that man shall eat in sorrow all the days of his life (Genesis 3:17), something that is obvious in our society today. What Bakhos is trying to explain is that over time, Judaism and Christianity have placed distinctions between Isaac/Ishmael and Sarah/Hagar, effectively forming a way of thinking that places some people over others, while in Islam both sets of people are treated more or less as equals. "That is not the case in Islam, however, where both sons, along with their mothers live in the abode of Abraham," (Bakhos 153). In Judaism and Christianity, Isaac is the sole important figure while Ishmael becomes somewhat irrelevant after Hagar is cast out by Abraham on the orders of Sarah. Both of these religions also portray Hagar as, at first, an insolent woman who looks down on Sarah because she is the one giving birth to the first son of Abraham, but they both later come back and give her a much more docile role after being spoken to by the angel in the wilderness. Other texts from these same religions, however, disagree with this and even go so far as to say Sarah was never even mad at Hagar, rather, Ishmael was the one that caused her to throw them out. Regardless, however, these two religions place very clear distinctions between the four people and effectively make two distinct branches, intimating that some people in the family line are better than others. I do not agree at all with this belief and I agree with Bakhos in that it should not be something people put their faith into. While it is true that all four people have different roles and have varying levels of importance to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, I believe that the view of Islam that all these individuals should be regarded ... • 26. Analysis Of The Story ' Of Ishmael And The Story Of Esau ' Two stories and One lesson While reading the story of Ishmael and the story of Esau, readers could easily find some similarities. Both stories delineates the process of the disfranchisement of the elder sons' firstborn right, the expulsion of certain characters, and the instruction of God. Those similarities make people to wonder that whether the two stories are just the same kind of story written to teach the believer the same lesson. This essay is divided into three parts and aimed to prove that the disfranchisement stories of Ishmael and Esau are essentially the same story told over two generations First of all, every main character of the Ismael narratives has its exact counterpart in the Esau narratives: Ishmael corresponds to Esau, Isaac to Jacobs, Abraham to Isaac, and Sarah to Rebekah. In Ishmael and Esau's case, according to Genesis, Ishmael was the child of Hager, the Egyptian slave, and Abraham. He was hated by his "mother", Sarah, who was Ishmael's mother in law according to the "ancient surrogate motherhood customs: a wife could give her maid to her husband and claim the child as her own" () and initially protected by his father Abraham. He was the victim who was casted out by Sarah and lost his birthright. Esau was also hated by his mother, Rebekah, while loved by his father, Isaac, accordingly(Genesis 25:28), and he lost his birthright and the death blessing in the end. Not only did Esau and Ishmael share the similar kind of living circumstances, they also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 27. Abram The Promised Land The story of the promised land began the day God approached Abram, now known as Abraham, the father of many. From Abraham came his descendants Isaac, Esau, Jacob, his twelve sons, and the Israelites whom all played a key role in the fulfilment of the promised land. The fulfilment of the promised land all began when Terah, father of Abraham, set out from Ur to Canaan– stopping in Haran on the way. While in Haran, the Lord said to Abram, "go forth from your land, your relatives, and from your father's house to a land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation and I will bless you...All the families of the earth will find blessing in you" (The Catholic Study Bible, Genesis 12:1–3). The new Pharaoh also demanded that baby boys were to be thrown in the Nile and baby girls can live. However, a levite woman went against this rule and placed her precious baby in a basket and let him float down the river until the Pharaoh's daughter found him, named him Moses, and took the baby home. As Moses grew up he noticed the unfair treatment of the Israelites and fled the area. Years later, Moses was called by God through a burning bush; the Lord told Moses to help his people escape Egypt and slavery. Moses obeyed the Lord and went to the Pharaoh demanding him to stop the cruel treatment at once and to listen to how God feels. Moses is the, "leader of the Israelites In their exodus from Egypt and the mediator in their covenant with Yahweh" (go.galegroup.com). The Pharaoh disagreed and continued to disrespect God's people, angering the Lord into cursing all of Egypt. The ten plagues of Egypt were a punishment to the Pharaoh from God and until the Israelites were set free, the Plagues would continue. After the death of the firstborn plague, the Pharaoh gave permission to Moses to take his people and serve the Lord as he said. The Israelites finally departed Egypt and set out for Rameses– ready to follow the word of their Lord. The journey to the promised land was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The book of Genesis, "identifies Isaac as God's chosen son of the promise as well as Isaac's youngest son Jacob." • 29. Most Influential Characters Of The Old Testament Abraham is one the most influential characters of the Old Testament in helping us to understand the Gospel. He lived 4,000 years ago traveling from what is known today as Iraq to modern day Israel. He was a friend of God and became a father of faith as well as father to many nations. Therefore, through this passage, we read about one of the dramatic story of God testing Abraham's faith. It took Abraham twenty five years to finally receive his first heir son and God tells him in vs. 2 "Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, whom you love Isaac and go to the land of Moriah. Go and sacrifice him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you." Wait did God just say to Abraham to sacrifice his only son? God meant every word in this verse even though He knew exactly how precious Isaac was to Abraham. I mean it took Abraham until his 100th age to finally bore a son. First lesson we can learn here is that God does not tempt, He tests us. "untested faith is no faith at all" Abraham passed the hardest test ever known to men because he did not withhold his only son simply because he obeyed the voice of the Lord. The second lesson we can learn from this passage is Abraham's faith. Abraham had all night and morning to be sacred, worried, sad, and terrified, about what God had instructed him to do. However because he obeyed God and knew that God would provide an alternative sacrifice, he had faith in God. In verse 8, Isaac asks Abraham where is the sheep for the burnt offering, Abraham replied, "God will provide a sheep for the burnt offering, my son." ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Abraham: A Leader to Lean From INTRODUCTION (1–2) Responsible is a popular quality which has been used to qualify someone in many area of life. A teacher will rather choose a stupid boy but very responsible student to become a proctor than the smart one but, very irresponsible. An employer will promote someone who is responsible to be required as overseer over the one who had many degree but lazy. A responsible father will take care of his family well, a responsible student will do his assignments diligently, and a responsible servant will do his duties and finish whatever it take. Become a responsible man is not an easy task. Sometimes, a responsibility will come because our own mistake, sometimes it's a consequence of what we have done, sometimes it just appeared because who we are. Whatever it is, we must take our responsibility of all of these. As believer, we often called ourselves as a servant of God. But, the question is how much we care about the duties that had given to us. It is true saying that, great man comes with great responsibility. As an adult, we have greater responsibility than younger one. As a CEO we have a greater responsibility than an employee. As a leader and a pastor, we have greater responsibility than an ordinary congregation to God. Today, we will learn from one servant three things from the servant of Abraham, how we must be responsible to do our duties. • 31. Discussion Of Abraham's Argument Against Pharoah In... In the readings about Sarah, Abraham requests of her that she claims to be his sister. In Genesis 12 when they go to Egypt this occurs. Abraham's request of this to Sarah demonstrates a way of men viewing women more as property than as people because Abraham was worried about other men's desires for his wife and willingness to kill him to win her. Abraham does not seem particularly bothered that Pharaoh claims Sarah while they are there, but then God uses his power against Pharaoh for being involved with Sarah, so Abraham's lack of action could represent his strength in his faith that God would do what was best for him. (Gen. 12:1–3) Then the LORD appeared to Abram, and said, "To your offspring I will give this land." Therefore, he built there an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him (Gen. 12:7). Abram knew that through his faith in God would blessed Abram and his decedents and Abram would be the father of many nations. • 33. Abraham And Fulfillment In Genesis : The Book Of Genesis The book of Genesis began with the covenant with Abraham, which was a binding– relationship with God. God promised numerous descendants, land, and a relationship with him. God's first blessing would provide Abraham with numerous descendants. In turn, God would make Abraham and his descendants a great nation. His second blessing would provide him and his family with a place to call home. His third blessing stated that Abraham would have a relationship with God. This meant that, anyone who blessed Abraham would be blessed by God. On the other hand, anyone that cursed him would be cursed in return. In order for these promises to take place, Abraham and all of his male members and descendants were circumcised to let God know that they belonged to him. The Pentatuach offered the reader hope in the fulfillment of the Abrahamic covenant because the promises were based solely in the obedience of Abraham and the Israelite people. We can believe that the Abrahamic covenant would be fulfilled when God called Abraham to leave his country, relatives, and family. By doing this, he would visit the land that God was going to give him. God said, "I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others" (Genesis 12:2 NLT). The land that the Lord took Abraham too, was the land that would be given to him and his descendants. How do the two Hagars resemble each other? Both women hold relatively similar social positions. The Biblical Hagar is an Egyptian bondwoman bought as a servant for Sarah, Abram's wife. Hagar, by law, is bound to Sarah. Her freedom and spirit are restricted, or dictated, by Abram and Sarah. This ownership extends as far as Abram having possession of Hagar's body. When Sarah does not or cannot give Abram a child, Hagar is expected to do so. Dutifully, she bears him a son named Ishmael. In the same fashion that the law binds the Biblical Hagar to Abram and Sarah, Hagar Shipley is bound by – as D. Blewett points out – the Currie code of values, the Shipley freedom, and the Manawakan elitist attitude, in addition to her own pride (Blewett 36). Hagar Shipley is a modernised version of the Biblical Hagar, in that, people can no longer be bound as slaves in western culture but are, quite often, bound by personal or social restraints, like Hagar is. Hagar's freedom is limited by the conflicting influences – internal versus external – in her own life. The Currie virtue keeps Hagar from expressing any outward form of emotion, which, ultimately, limits or ruins the majority of her relationships, including her marriage to Brampton Shipley. Sarah Imeinu is the wife of Abraham and Mother of the Jewish Nation. Sarah was the first matriarch, and Abraham was the first patriarch (father), of our Jewish people. She was born and raised from the city of Ur, Kasdim, the Sumerian city of Ur. Sarah's early life consists of many different names for herself. As a young girl, she was originally known as Yisach (Jessica), which means "to see." She is said to have been born blessed with divine inspiration. The most impressive thing about Sarah to me was her popularity, power, and strength. Siftei Chachamim, a famed 17th–century Torah commentator, wrote that Sarah's level of prophecy was actually superior to that of Abraham. It is said that Sarah was such a powerful prophetess that God spoke to her directly, while to the others he spoke through a messenger. She was entirely free of sin, and she was exceptionally modest. One event that changed Sarah's life was her giving birth to Isaac. God made a covenant with Abraham. This was that his wife (Sarah) would conceive a son. The couple both laughed at this promise. I now question why the Lord might want Hagar to endure this mistreatment, but in verse ten the messenger says that Hagar will be rewarded and given so many children that they cannot be counted. 1 Peter 2:18 may offer some insight as to why God asks Hagar to return to her master, it says, "Household slaves, submit by accepting the authority of your masters with all respect. Do this not only to good and kind masters but also to those who are harsh." I still wonder why the Lord requests her to endure this mistreatment. Verses nine and ten remind me of a couple reoccurring themes from the bible which may help answer some my questions. The first theme concerns God promising many descendants to those who trust in him. Perhaps many descendants embody the greatest reward of this time. The second theme of this passage deals with God uplifting and supporting the marginalized, as highlighted in Matthew 20:16, "Those who are last shall be first and those who are first shall be last." In verses 11–12 the Lord's messenger tells Hagar that the Lord has heard of her mistreatment and will thus grant her a son named Ishmael. In verse 12, I observe that Ishmael will be a wild mule of a man, who will fight everyone and live at odds with his relatives. I wonder why the author portrays Ishmael's demeanor of fighting as a positive attribute. In verses 13 and 14, Hagar ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay about Sarah, the Evil Mistress Sarah, the Evil Mistress Although Hagar flaunts her pregnancy with Abraham in the face of Sarah who is barren, Sarah is ultimately responsible for generating trouble in Abraham's household. Through Sarah's decision to give Hagar to Abraham, Sarah's jealousy and anger towards Hagar's reaction to conception, and also Sarah's harsh treatment of Hagar, we are able to understand why Sarah is truly the one accountable for the negative circumstances throughout her relationship with Hagar. Initially, in Genesis 11:30 we feel remorse for Sarai in her barrenness. Repeatedly it is expressed that Sarai is barren. Sharon Jeansonne explains, "Indeed, Sarai's childlessness is predominant in most of the scenes that concern her" (15). Sarai's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Now, let us look at Hagar's position in the situation. Looking at her status we see that she has no authority and no control over her future. She is wholly under the demands of her mistress Sarai (Jeansonne 43). Hagar is not even introduced as a person, but merely as a maidservant. She is only referred to by titles such as, "Sarai's maidservant" or "her" or "your slave–woman." Sarai and Abram do not even give her the status of a person who deserves a name. Due to her lack of power and control, Hagar was given no choice in having a son for Sarai and Abram. The verse reads in Genesis 16:4, "He cohabited with Hagar and she conceived..." This is all we are given; none of Hagar's opinions or feelings are shared with the readers, the narrator remains silent about Hagar in the situation (Jeansonne 44). Barrenness was always blamed on the woman in ancient near eastern times, although it was not always the case. Since Hagar becomes pregnant, it is obvious that Sarai is in fact, the sterile one. After conception, Hagar realizes her status has changed and Frymer–Kensky puts it clearly saying, "Hagar knows that she has something Sarai doesn't have, a child in her womb, and this knowledge makes her cease to consider Sarai's status above her own" (228). In fact, there were three ancient Near Eastern marriage contracts that stated after a certain number of years, the wife must give her slave to her husband (227).
