APPLICATIONS
TO SPORTS
COACHING
BY: ABRAHAM MASLOW
BSESS 1
• Application of Abraham Maslow's
concepts, theories and ideas to sports
coaching.
• Application of the theory is focus on the
two key factors which are the Coach and
the Athlete.
•Pivotal Role of the Coach
• Satisfaction of needs in relation to self-
actualization and self-transcendence
Introduction
• Sports provide Opportunities
• Satisfaction of both Coaches and
Athletes
• Pursuit of Knowledge and Learned Skills
• Pursuit of Self Actualization and Self
Transcendence
• Coaching : What is it?
The Role of
the
Teacher
01
EXTRINSIC LEARNING
• For Maslow, a useful area of research to consider is education when
discussing how it can be applied to sport coaching. • Maslow viewed the
classroom as a place that traditionally emphasized extrinsic learning
where the role of the teacher is to be the lecturer, controlling, and
reinforcing learning.
• For Maslow, extrinsic learning have a little relevance for an individual’s
journey.
• He argued that extrinsic learning weaken the ‘higher nature’ of peoples
characters—a process too often prioritizing associative learning while
ignoring the values and ends of the learner.
INSTRINSIC LEARNING
• For Maslow, to encourage self-actualization,
the focus of the learning needed to be intrinsic
learning.
• He argued that the role of the teacher needs to
be reconsidered and the learning process
s h o u l d p u t a n e m p h a s i s o n c r e a t i n g
experiences that have impact on a learners self-
development and fulfillment.
HUMANISTIC GOALS
• Know the student or the athlete -provide opportunities for people to learn about themselves to
inspire self-discovery.
• Accept the person – Encourage your athlete to focus on her strengths while being conscious of
her limitations and helping her build or reconstruct her inherent skills.
• Encourage mastery – nurture a learning atmosphere that celebrates growth and development.
Permit the person to express and act without fear of making mistakes. Be non-intrusive and non-
controlling. Ask rather than tell. Help the person to discover what is best for him or her by getting
them to decide what is best for themselves.
• Offer feedback that encourage deep exploration – Encourage the student to consider his or her
own involvement and relationship with sports. Understanding the effects of athletics on his or her
human nature. Finding one's identity is an important component of athletic education. Education is
meaningless if it does not do this.
• Peak experiences- Peak experiences are used as a reward and objective by humanistic educators
and coaches at various stages during the learning process. It encourages the student to cherish
whatever minor or insignificant moments result in discoveries, illuminations, and rapture
experiences.
Relevance
Of Works
To Sports
Coaching
-Coaching aims to produce optimal performance
and improvement at work. It focuses on specific
skills and goals, although it may also have an
impact on an individual's personal attributes such
as social interaction or confidence. Coaching has
been known to boost confidence, improve work
performance, and build effective communication
skills.
PURSUIT OF SELF-ACTUALIZATION:
● Self-actualization is the process of realizing one's full
potential and achieving personal growth. It involves a deep
understanding of oneself, including one's strengths,
weaknesses, and values. Self-actualization requires a
willingness to take risks, be open to new experiences, and
pursue personal goals. This pursuit can lead to greater
self-confidence, creativity, and a sense of purpose in life. It
is often considered the highest level of Maslow's Hierarchy
of Needs.
TRANSCENDENCE
● Transcendence refers to a state of being beyond the
ordinary, physical world. It can be achieved through spiritual
or religious practices, as well as through experiences such
as meditation or psychedelics. Transcendence involves a
feeling of unity with something greater than oneself, such as
a higher power, nature, or the universe. It can lead to a
sense of inner peace, connectedness, and a deeper
understanding of the meaning of life. Transcendence is often
seen as a key aspect of spiritual growth and development.
WORK INFLUENCED THE
PRACTICE OF COACHING
● As an executive coach, the study of influence has multiple advantages for
your business and for the person you are coaching.
● From your perspective, the proper use of influence-based concepts and
techniques can help you more effectively win coaching assignments,
increase your coaching effectiveness, and enhance your professional
reputation.
● From the client/coach’s perspective, sharing your knowledge of influence
concepts and techniques with your clients can enhance their influence in
the workplace. This in turn, can increase their current job performance,
position them for promotion, and accelerate their upward mobility.
THANK YOU!!!
