CAPSTONE TOPIC PROPOSAL
READING INTERVENTION HANDBOOK

Week 1
TOPIC SUMMARY
Throughout my program studies, I have been continuously reminded of the importance of
early reading intervention within the primary grades. “The importance of early assessment
and intervention for reading problems is borne out by the findings that show that reading
problems identified in Grade 3 and beyond require considerable intervention because
children do not just outgrow reading problems.” (Birsh 2011). I plan to focus my capstone
project on identifying these students as well as the intervention strategies that can be used.
Throughout my research, I will explain why early intervention is needed within every school
and why primary teachers need too be informed and knowledgeable in teaching reading. I
will then locate how we can assess students with meaningful assessments and monitor their
progress. Next, will also research and create ways in which teachers can implement reading
intervention within the classroom. Along with this, I plan to create handouts that teachers
can give to families when working with their students at home. A small part of the
handbook with inform and suggest the importance of communication between parents and
teachers in regards to reading strategies that can be used at home and how it can increase
a student’s success in reading.
RELEVANCE
With the increase in the expectation of student achievement, it is incredibly
important that teachers are vigilant and aware of how they can help all of their
students achieve in the classroom.
“Without systematic, focused and intensive intervention, the majority of children
with reading difficulties rarely catch up and that failure to develop reading skills
by age 9 may result in a lifetime of illiteracy.” (Pinell, 2017)
Helping teachers understand the importance and providing ways in which they
can monitor progress and intervene will ultimately help each student within the
classroom.
PROFESSIONAL CONTRIBUTION
I will create a handbook that teachers can access and follow easily. It will also be
formatted for teachers to use and copy parent handouts when they are needed.
My idea, is that this is something that can be placed online for teachers to always
access and edit if need be.
My hope is that I can also create a “quick” way for teachers to look up
assessments or strategies to implement efficiently into their classroom.
Finally, I would also hope that this tool could be used within the primary grades
and added to regularly so that all teachers benefit from the success of others.
PLAN FOR COMPLETION
• Decide of project format (handbook and online) and layout
• Research early reading intervention and the importance
• Compile assessments and their intended outcomes (create fact sheet)
• Research strategies, tools and games for reading intervention.
• Create parent handouts for different types of strategies used at home
• Compile into well-organized handbook
