and Learning Skills (ABLLS®-R).
Presented by : Rabia Javed Iqbal
The ABLLS-R Assessment
The ABLLS assessment is broken down
into 25 domains. Within each domain, there
are between 7-25 individual tasks that
address the variety of individual
developmental skills the child must
demonstrate within that domain.
Scoring & Task
 Tasks starts from B1 TO B27
 Tasks B1, B2, B3, B5,B8- B22, B25 AND
B26 contain scoring from 0 1 2 3 4
 Tasks B4, B6, B7, B23, B24, B27contain
scoring from 0 1 2.
Visual Performance
One great way to utilize ABLLS visual
performance data is to create programs specific
to the areas that children or students can
improve in.
Visual Performance: Puzzles, form box,
matching, block design imitation, patterning,
seriation, picture sequences, mazes.
B1. Puzzle with a single-piece
type of inset
 A puzzles with connecting pieces in an inset,
puzzles with a square edged border, puzzles
that are irregularly shaped and non-
interlocking, and jigsaw puzzles are
included in this.
Guidelines
 A prompt can consist of verbal or
physical guidance, such as telling the
child where a piece might go or physically
moving or placing a piece in the
puzzle. Once child is provided with no
more than 2 prompts and completes the
puzzle in 5 minutes or less, this set is
considered mastered. The student can
then move on to the next puzzle set.
B2. Form Box
 OBJECTIVE: a form box or shape sorter
& its pieces is provided. Student ’ll be
able to put the pieces into corresponding
holes.
B3. Match identical objects to
sample
 OBJECTIVE: An object is given to the
student & he will match to an identical object
in an array of 3 items.
 Baseline: Place an object directly in front of
student and an identical object approximately
12-24 inches from student as you say,
“Match.”
B4 & B6. Match objects to pictures
& Match pictures to objects
 OBJECTIVE: student will match the
object to one of 3 pictures in array
 Student will match the picture to one of 3
objects in array
 27 Picture cards - Includes pictures of
common items used in Sped. Classrooms
 Data sheets with targets that match cards
for B4, B6
B5 & B7.Match identical pictures
to sample & Fluent matching
 OBJECTIVES: student will match to an
identical picture in array of 3 pictures
 Student will match the group of 10
pictures of items with those identical
pictures in an array with quick succession.
B8. Sort non- identical items
 OBJECTIVE: student will be given a
variety of non identical objects or pictures
representing 3 items & given an array of
sample items for each of 3 items; e.g.
students will sort non identical items into
the appropriate groups like all dogs, all
trees and all people.
Description
There are thirteen sorting mats with nine
pictures each. The items to be sorted
include balls, trucks, cars, books, pencils,
dogs, cats, fish, trees, flowers, backpacks,
dinosaurs, and boats. This product can be a
cut and paste activity.
B9& B12. Block designs on picture
card & Block design from picture
 OBJECTIVES: student will be able to
place the blocks in the appropriate
location on the design card disregarding
extra blocks.
 Student will place blocks to make the
design shown or given in the block design
card.
B10. Puzzles with multiple
connecting pieces in an inset-type
frame
 OBJECTIVE: student will complete the
uniquely- shaped connecting puzzle
pieces which fit into an irregularly shaped
inset frame.
Description
Making Block Designs on Picture cards and
Block Designs from Picture Cards. There
are two set: One to be used with 1 inch
colored cubes and one to be used with
pattern blocks. Each set can be used for
both B9 and B12.
B11. Puzzles with a square-
edged border frame
 OBJECTIVE: student will complete the
square-edged frame puzzle
 DESCRIPTION: student will assemble
puzzles with a square edged border frame.
Each puzzle in this product promotes basic
social skills2,3 & 4 piece puzzles are included
along with puzzle mats to give students a
visual outline for placing the pieces.
B13 & B22. Sequence pattern to
match a visual model & Extend a
sequence pattern
 OBJECTIVES: student will arrange items
(e.g. colored blocks) to match the visual
sequence pattern.
 Student will be able to continue adding
items in the correct sequence. (e.g.
ABABAB, ABCABC, ABBCABBC)
B14. Puzzles with multiple piece
which must be juxtaposed
 OBJECTIVE: student will correctly
juxtapose the pieces to form a picture by
given irregularly-shaped, non-interlocking
puzzle pieces.
B15. Jigsaw puzzles
 OBJECTIVE: student will correctly
complete the standard jigsaw puzzle
(interlocking pieces without a frame).
B16. Match associated pictures
 OBJECTIVE: student will be able to
match an item that is associated with one
of the items in the array (e.g. match a bat
to picture of a ball).
 This item has been updated (January
2016) and now contains 32 go-together
strips in color and black and white. Blank
matching strips are provided as well.
B17. Sort by function
 OBJECTIVE: student will be provided
with a sample of 2 or more items having
different functions & shown a
demonstration of matching another item
that has the same function.
 Student will be able to sort additional
pictures that have the same functions with
correct sample items.
Description
This item is a great way for students to practice
sorting by function. There are 8 functions
featured: cooking, exercising, reading,
sleeping, cleaning, playing, wearing, and
driving. Each function has a sorting mat and 10
picture cards.
B18. Sorting by feature
 OBJECTIVE: student will provided with a
sample of 2 or more items that have
different features/ parts &shown
demonstration of matching another item
that has the same feature.
 Student will be able to sort additional
pictures that have the same features/ parts
with the correct sample items.
Description
This sorting activity provides 10 different
sorting mats and sorting cards in color and
black and white. The focus of these
materials is sorting by features--wheels,
doors, wings, colors, leaves, stripes, spots,
numbers, and tails.
B19. Sort by class
 OBJECTIVE: student will be provided
with a sample of 3 different classes of
items & shown a demonstration of
matching another member of each class.
 Student will be able to sort additional
pictures that match the class to which the
item belongs.
Description
This fun sorting activity is an easy way to
build vocabulary related to items found in
different rooms of the house. This item
contains sorting mats for eight areas of a
house: bedroom, bathroom, kitchen,
dining room, living room, laundry room,
playroom, and the yard. Each location has
eight picture cards of common items found
in each room. These sorting materials come
in both color and black and white versions.
B20. Delayed replication of a
sequence
 OBJECTIVE: student will be able to
replicate the sequence by showing a
model of items in a specific sequence &
then having the model removed.
 This item is designed to promote visual
performance skills through replicating
sequences. It contains 24 sequence strips
with three pictures each. It also contains
blank sequencing mats and matching
pictures for students to put in order after
the model is removed.
B21. Delayed finding a sample
 OBJECTIVE: student have shown a
specific item & it is removed, and 5 items
are then presented (1 being same as the
original item).
 Students will be able to find the initial
item.
Description
This item is designed to promote visual
performance skills and visual memory through
showing the student a picture and then having
them locate that picture from a field of 5
pictures. This product contains 40 picture
strips in color and black and white. The
picture for students to locate is first and once
shown it can easily be covered or folded
backwards so students can then find the item in
the remaining field of pictures.
