Planning the filming for my A2 Media Studies short film
INTRODUCTION
Most movie producers consider pre production the most important step in film making. A film that is
properly prepared will have time and money to spare. As the producer and production manager of Bardo,
I am responsible for:
• Assembling the production team
• Assembling the cast
• Managing the equipment
• Organising the filming schedule
• Filling out the paperwork
• The breakdown of the scenes
• The analyses of the scenes
Also as director I will unify my knowledge of cinematography and apply it to my film idea as to create a
visually impactful film. I will not only be directing my film, I will also act in front (actress) and behind the
camera (cameraman) in order to expand my knowledge and to gain an informed perspective from every
role in movie making.
Script
PRODUCTION TEAM
Producer- Georgina Malpass
The producer finances the film and is responsible for assembling the production team.
Production Manager- Georgina Malpass
The production manager is responsible for the overall organisation of the film, including hiring support
personnel, transport, scheduling, co-ordination with suppliers of services and equipment as well as monitoring
the budget and payment.
Director- Georgina Malpass
In charge of the creative force that pulls a film together. The director vision shapes the look of a film and is
responsible for turning the words of a script into moving images on screen.
Cameramen- Des Malpass, Joanne Malpass & Georgina Malpass
Responsible for following the directions given by the director. A cameraman manually operates the equipment
needed to shoot a film. (They have no creative freedom)
PRODUCTION TEAM
Make up artist- Joanne Malpass
Applies the make up effects to actors and actresses in order to transform them into the characters for
the film. They follow the instructions given by the director so that the actors look coincides with the
directors creative vision.
Location scout- Desmond Malpass
The function of this job is to find locations that are appropriate for the different scenes in the script.
Transport manager- Desmond Malpass (as he is a designated driver)
The transport manager must provide transport for crew, cast and equipment to the location
Production accountant- Georgina Malpass
This role requires the accountant to keep track of the film’s spending.
Editor- Georgina Malpass
Edits the footage together to create a synergised final piece. Also in charge of fine tuning and
music choice.
CREW PAPERWORK
DIRECTORS AND ACTORS
The realms of acting and directing are usually mutually exclusive. Often, directors want to remain behind the scenes, and
actors want to get as much screen time as possible. There are some actors, however, that have crossed over this threshold,
such as-
• Joseph Gordon-Levitt by acting and directing Don Jon,
• Ben Affleck in Argo
• Mel Gibson in Braveheart
• Danny Devito in Matilda
• and Ben Stiller in Zoolander.
These have all been undeniably successful and well received by audiences, and are films I would like to replicate in
success.
At the other end of the industry there are some directors who have acted in their own film, such as
• Woody Alan in Annie Hall
• Quentin Tarantino in Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained, and Pulp Fiction.
The reason directors do this is to have complete creative control as well as have fun. To keep down budget costs and due to
lack of professional actresses in my school, I will be playing the main role in my own film. This is added pressure but I truly
want to understand all aspects that are involved in film making.

Assembling a cast and crew is crucial to a film’s success. Choosing the right people, who
would understand and respect my creative vision is very important. I have chosen to work
with my friends and family members in this production, as they are a reliable support team
(and as I am in a foreign country this is very significant). In addition they work well together
and bring their own unique gifts to the film making process. However I have made it very
clear that this is my film and I will need their professional cooperation to follow my directions
so that I can make an effective short film independently, with their help.
CASTING
Bad actors and age inappropriate casting are often the downfall of student films. As my film has
a limited script the amateur actors I have chosen are family and friends. My film is centered
around a family. Therefore, the casting is appropriate and I have the added bonus of the
authenticity of the characters looking alike- as we are actually related.
I would have possibly liked to have had the opportunity to team up with other class members to
hold a joint casting event, but seeing as I am the only student taking A level Media Studies in my
school this was impossible. Plus, potential drawbacks of hiring an actress are: payment, as I
have a limited budget and scheduling as working with another person’s schedule is difficult.
I did want to go through casting resources such as- contacting local theatre programs, acting
classes and putting up flyers; however, being in a foreign country there is a language barrier and
even though my film has a limited script and technically a Serbian actor could physically play the
role, I wouldn’t be able to have a creative input or direct them as we would not understand each
other. This would be costly and time consuming and is not a risk I wanted to take. So I have
chosen my family members as they are already the right physical types for the roles, and my
friends as they want to help.

SCENE ANALYSIS
For the ‘trolley dash’ scene I initially planed just to get a shot of the trolley wheel and a POV shot of the ceiling,
however, when assessing the cameras I had and the location layout I was able to add in more cameras and
therefore more shots, so I-
• Attached the Go Pro to the front of the trolley
• Attached the Sony under the trolley (pointing at the wheel)
• Positioned the Cannon in the stairwell
• Positioned the iPhone next to the character’s head (to get a POV perspective)
By doing this I will be able to capture the same scene from a variety of angles creating cinematic diversity. This
not only creates continuity, but is also an efficient and time effective way of conducting a visually intriguing
shoot.
For the closed eye scene-
The lighting was not sufficient when the character was lying down due to the camera blocking the light. Not to
mention the position of the hair and the camera angle was unflattering. This is why I arranged to shoot the
scene with the character sat against the wall with a pillow behind the head as to get the right lighting and a
good angle.
For the father’s scene-
I had planned to get a simple medium shot of the father looking upset next to the hospital bed. However, the
hospital room did not have the space to do so, therefore I had to improvise. In addition my actor wanted to be
inconspicuous, so I devised an over shoulder shot with the father covering his face which allowed me to
achieve an effective shot that worked well with the layout of the room and the actor’s wishes.

SCENE ANALYSIS
For the mother scene-
I had originally planned to film two shots, one showing the mother at the bedside and another of her kissing the girl on the
cheek. When it came to filming this scene my initial shot idea seemed boring. So I decided to position the Cannon camera
at the end of the hospital bed in order capture a long shot of the actions unfolding (in one take). And to do a close up of the
mother holding the girl’s hand. My creative incentive had enabled me to record a much more powerful scene, utilising
different camera angles and a continuous filming style. I now understand that a storyboard acts as ‘scene guidance’ rather
than a plan of every single shot. And as a director I have the authority and ability to asses the situation and make creative
decisions regarding the shot types I think would work best in each scene.
For the sister scene-
I had planned to take (again) basic and simplistic shots of the actress framed in a hospital window and running down the
hallway. As I found the ‘trolley scene’ to be so effective I wanted to replicate the same filming set up for this scene.
However unlike the ‘trolley scene’, I took three takes of the actress running down the hallway (rather than in one
continuous take) due to interference with the camera focus.
• For the first take I positioned the Cannon camera at the end of the corridor to capture a simplistic long shot.
• Then using a wheel chair as a ‘tracker’ I followed the actress running down the hallway with an iPhone in hand to
capture the real life intensity of her actions.
• Again, for the third shot, I sat in the wheel chair as to film a frontwards shot of the character running down the hallway.
Our first attempt at this scene consisted of cameraman Des Malpass trying to wheel me backwards down the hallway,
yet it was too slow pace and dangerous. So by attaching a ‘selfie stick’ to the iPhone and getting the cameraman to
duck down whilst pushing the wheel chair I was able to successfully capture a high angle frontwards view motion shot
of the sister running down the hallway. And the selfie stick was more effective then I anticipated as it absorbed the
shakiness of the wheel chair.

SCENE ANALYSIS
Continuation of the sister scene-
I attached the Sony camera with the flexible tripod to the hospital bed lifting mechanism as to get a well lit, side
view. Again, like the mother scene I was able to use a continuous filming style to capture the sister’s emotional
reaction.
The heaven scene-
I have adapted a new scene based on the location’s facilities. Belmedic has a brightly lit stairwell that is perfect
for representing the ‘stairway to heaven’. I arranged for a low angle medium shot of the girls legs walking up the
stairs. And another shot of her coming down the stairs which will be implemented into the film after the ‘sister
scene’ showing she has chosen life over death.
The eyes open scene-
Like the first sequence, the ‘eyes open’ scene was arranged using the same method as the ‘eyes closed’ scene
so that the character was sat up-right against the wall with a pillow behind the head. This is due to the lighting
being too dim when lay down. Also zooming in on the eyes as they open, creates emphasis on the intensity of
the atmosphere, whilst incorporating another filming technique.

SCENE ANALYSIS
Ambulance scene-
In this scene I wanted to capture the urgency of the situation as well as the ambulance's journey. I began
with an in motion establishing shot so the audience driving up the road. This worked well as followed the
vehicle as it drove past.
I then devised a close up of the sirens to show that the ambulance has arrived at the house and is
stationary indicating that the girl is being hospitalised. I achieved this shot by using a selfie stick to reach the
ambulance roof.
In order to create diversity in my shot types I wanted to capture a deep focus shot of the ambulance coming
round the corner. I feel this shot will keep the audience on the edge of their seats, encouraging the
ambulance to “hurry up!’
As to represent the characters point of view, I filmed inside the ambulance and when editing I intend to put it
in slow motion which will communicate to viewers the characters critical condition, and that she is fading out
between life and death.
My favorite shot from this scene is the shot of the rear of the ambulance which I capture on my Go Pro by
attaching the flexible tripod to an internal roof handle.

SCENE ANALYSIS
Cyber bully scene-
For the first scene I used the Cannon camera in order to get a high gradient shot of the ‘cyber bully’ on the
phone. I used a medium shot so the audience can focus on both the subject and the visually intriguing
setting. I feel using St Sava as a filming location was a good choice, as it is unique ideas that creates
immediate curiosity for both English and Serbian viewers.
For the following shot I track the girl as she walks not only to show her journey to the café but to also show
her nature. As she walks, she passes a beggar and completely ignores him, this will resonate with the
audience and prove to them that she is an evil character.
I tried my best to keep the camera still whilst filming the cyber bully crossing the road, however in hindsight I
should have brought the tripod. However the theme of glass and transparency is a reoccurring theme that
emulates both the falseness of first impressions (as the cyber bully looks innocent) and later the self
reflection of the main character when in the state of Bardo.
When filming the girls laughing and looking at the mobile phone I cropped the shot to just reveal their
laughing mouths and the phone. I wanted to embody the typical ‘cyber bully girl gang’ and to show how
something so “harmless” as sending hurtful messages for ‘a laugh’ can have detrimental effects on the
recipient.
I was very lucky with the weather on 23rd of February as it was raining all morning then cleared up around
1:30 pm, as soon as I started to film. Moreover, this is why filming over ran by an hour. Yet in the end I was
able to achieve the shots I set out the shoot, to a high standard.

SCENE ANALYSIS
Overdose scene-
To set the scene. I took my initiative to incorporate a new shot. I found a house that had branches in front of
the window, this worked well as it had a’ classical fairytale tragedy’ feel to it and in media text this will
represent entrapment, concealment and will immediately emulate a somber tone. So I slowly zoomed in on
the window using my Cannon camera and captured a simple establishing shot that will set the scene, thus
making my film more powerful.
Internally, I shot the next scene going off the idea of the window. I thought it would be more intriguing to pan
from the window to the pills and hand, as to connect the sequence of footage for the audience. Whilst the
camera panned it went out of focus a little which enhanced the feeling of uncertainty, danger and fading of
life.
For the second shot I thought it would be more dramatic and emotional if I included a shot of the sister
discovering the girl after she has taken an overdose. It also gives more meaning to the later scene where
the sister is desperately running through the hospital.

SCENE ANALYSIS
Bardo scene-
I first wanted to establish the setting of Bardo by using a long shot so audiences can see the glass furniture,
iPhone and specifically the glowing door.
For the next shot I used nigh angle shot of the girl sitting at the glass table and picking up the iPhone. This
worked well as there is a fait reflection on the table of the character which ties in with my theme of self
reflection. I left a lot of lead room to the right of the iPhone so that later in the post production stage I can edit
on ‘text bubbles’. I also create a graphic match to the ‘cyber bully girls’ as I cropped the shot to only revel the
main characters mouth and iPhone.
By doing a close up of the iPhone screen whilst the girl is texting the audience can see both what the girl is
typing (which is- “where am I??”) and from the girls point of view which brings them closer to the character.
By incorporating an eye line match to the door the audience can anticipate that the main character is intrigued
and attracted to the glowing door.
I created a high angle tracking shot of the girls legs walking to the door to create drama and suspence. In order
to create this shot I had to place the Go Pro in my sister’s toy car and instruct the cameraman to track the
movements of the character.

I used a side shot to show the girl walking to the glowing door so that the iPhone is always in the background,
as an intimidating presence.
Then the girl hears a faded ringtone bleeding through from the outside world, which distracts her from the
glowing door. I again left lead room so I can later edit on a text bubble that says “News Update”
I wanted to achieve a birds eye view of the girl sitting at the desk to foreshadow a overwhelming and sinister
revelation. The cameraman had to use the ladders and the selfie stick to be able to get this shot.

Bardo scene-
Another close-up on the screen allows the audience to see the girl is going on a News application which builds
intrigue and suspense. Again using a close up to gage the girls reaction makes her emotion of shock and
horror more readable to the audience and therefore more impactful.
A low angle shot of the girl looking at the glowing door makes the audience feel the that girl is overwhelmed
and frightened by the news article.
A close-up of her grabbing the door handle builds tension and amplifies the action. When the iPhone receives a
message from the cyber bully I've used a crab shot so the iPhone is in focus and the girl is in the background
to indicate the dominance and threat that the cyber bully imposes on the girls life.

Bardo scene-
As the girl receives the cyber bully messages I organised a medium shot of the girls face with lead room either
side so the abusive text bubbles can be edited on. This is so the audience can read what the messages say
and see the immediate reaction of the girls emotions.
As the girl walks to the door again I took a medium shot as to show her wipe her eye and her emotional journey
to the glowing door. As she opens the door I chose to use a low angle medium shot to show intimidation and
the shear size of the door compared to the girl.
Then the girl comes back to Bardo and closes the door behind her, this allows the audience to see she's had a
change of heart and has decided life over death.
The side shot of her picking up the iPhone, turning it off and then slamming it down on the desk captures the
glowing door fade, which represents the end of Bardo.

As the producer and production manager of Bardo, I am responsible for: • Assembling the production team • Assembling the cast • Managing the equipment • Organising the filming schedule • Filling out the paperwork • The breakdown of the scenes • The analyses of the scenes Also as director I will unify my knowledge of cinematography and apply it to my film idea as to create a visually impactful film. I will not only be directing my film, I will also act in front (actress) and behind the camera (cameraman) in order to expand my knowledge and to gain an informed perspective from every role in movie making.

    PRODUCTION TEAM Producer- GeorginaMalpass The producer finances the film and is responsible for assembling the production team. Production Manager- Georgina Malpass The production manager is responsible for the overall organisation of the film, including hiring support personnel, transport, scheduling, co-ordination with suppliers of services and equipment as well as monitoring the budget and payment. Director- Georgina Malpass In charge of the creative force that pulls a film together. The director vision shapes the look of a film and is responsible for turning the words of a script into moving images on screen. Cameramen- Des Malpass, Joanne Malpass & Georgina Malpass Responsible for following the directions given by the director. A cameraman manually operates the equipment needed to shoot a film. (They have no creative freedom)

They follow the instructions given by the director so that the actors look coincides with the directors creative vision. Location scout- Desmond Malpass The function of this job is to find locations that are appropriate for the different scenes in the script. Transport manager- Desmond Malpass (as he is a designated driver) The transport manager must provide transport for crew, cast and equipment to the location Production accountant- Georgina Malpass This role requires the accountant to keep track of the film’s spending. Editor- Georgina Malpass Edits the footage together to create a synergised final piece. Also in charge of fine tuning and music choice.

    DIRECTORS AND ACTORS Therealms of acting and directing are usually mutually exclusive. Often, directors want to remain behind the scenes, and actors want to get as much screen time as possible. There are some actors, however, that have crossed over this threshold, such as- • Joseph Gordon-Levitt by acting and directing Don Jon, • Ben Affleck in Argo • Mel Gibson in Braveheart • Danny Devito in Matilda • and Ben Stiller in Zoolander. These have all been undeniably successful and well received by audiences, and are films I would like to replicate in success. At the other end of the industry there are some directors who have acted in their own film, such as • Woody Alan in Annie Hall • Quentin Tarantino in Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained, and Pulp Fiction. The reason directors do this is to have complete creative control as well as have fun. To keep down budget costs and due to lack of professional actresses in my school, I will be playing the main role in my own film. This is added pressure but I truly want to understand all aspects that are involved in film making.

Choosing the right people, who would understand and respect my creative vision is very important. I have chosen to work with my friends and family members in this production, as they are a reliable support team (and as I am in a foreign country this is very significant). In addition they work well together and bring their own unique gifts to the film making process. However I have made it very clear that this is my film and I will need their professional cooperation to follow my directions so that I can make an effective short film independently, with their help.

    CASTING Bad actors andage inappropriate casting are often the downfall of student films. As my film has a limited script the amateur actors I have chosen are family and friends. My film is centered around a family. Therefore, the casting is appropriate and I have the added bonus of the authenticity of the characters looking alike- as we are actually related. I would have possibly liked to have had the opportunity to team up with other class members to hold a joint casting event, but seeing as I am the only student taking A level Media Studies in my school this was impossible. Plus, potential drawbacks of hiring an actress are: payment, as I have a limited budget and scheduling as working with another person’s schedule is difficult. I did want to go through casting resources such as- contacting local theatre programs, acting classes and putting up flyers; however, being in a foreign country there is a language barrier and even though my film has a limited script and technically a Serbian actor could physically play the role, I wouldn’t be able to have a creative input or direct them as we would not understand each other. This would be costly and time consuming and is not a risk I wanted to take. So I have chosen my family members as they are already the right physical types for the roles, and my friends as they want to help.

    SCENE ANALYSIS For the‘trolley dash’ scene I initially planed just to get a shot of the trolley wheel and a POV shot of the ceiling, however, when assessing the cameras I had and the location layout I was able to add in more cameras and therefore more shots, so I- • Attached the Go Pro to the front of the trolley • Attached the Sony under the trolley (pointing at the wheel) • Positioned the Cannon in the stairwell • Positioned the iPhone next to the character’s head (to get a POV perspective) By doing this I will be able to capture the same scene from a variety of angles creating cinematic diversity. This not only creates continuity, but is also an efficient and time effective way of conducting a visually intriguing shoot. For the closed eye scene- The lighting was not sufficient when the character was lying down due to the camera blocking the light. Not to mention the position of the hair and the camera angle was unflattering. This is why I arranged to shoot the scene with the character sat against the wall with a pillow behind the head as to get the right lighting and a good angle. For the father’s scene- I had planned to get a simple medium shot of the father looking upset next to the hospital bed. However, the hospital room did not have the space to do so, therefore I had to improvise. In addition my actor wanted to be inconspicuous, so I devised an over shoulder shot with the father covering his face which allowed me to achieve an effective shot that worked well with the layout of the room and the actor’s wishes.

    SCENE ANALYSIS For themother scene- I had originally planned to film two shots, one showing the mother at the bedside and another of her kissing the girl on the cheek. When it came to filming this scene my initial shot idea seemed boring. So I decided to position the Cannon camera at the end of the hospital bed in order capture a long shot of the actions unfolding (in one take). And to do a close up of the mother holding the girl’s hand. My creative incentive had enabled me to record a much more powerful scene, utilising different camera angles and a continuous filming style. I now understand that a storyboard acts as ‘scene guidance’ rather than a plan of every single shot. And as a director I have the authority and ability to asses the situation and make creative decisions regarding the shot types I think would work best in each scene. For the sister scene- I had planned to take (again) basic and simplistic shots of the actress framed in a hospital window and running down the hallway. As I found the ‘trolley scene’ to be so effective I wanted to replicate the same filming set up for this scene. However unlike the ‘trolley scene’, I took three takes of the actress running down the hallway (rather than in one continuous take) due to interference with the camera focus. • For the first take I positioned the Cannon camera at the end of the corridor to capture a simplistic long shot. • Then using a wheel chair as a ‘tracker’ I followed the actress running down the hallway with an iPhone in hand to capture the real life intensity of her actions. • Again, for the third shot, I sat in the wheel chair as to film a frontwards shot of the character running down the hallway. Our first attempt at this scene consisted of cameraman Des Malpass trying to wheel me backwards down the hallway, yet it was too slow pace and dangerous. So by attaching a ‘selfie stick’ to the iPhone and getting the cameraman to duck down whilst pushing the wheel chair I was able to successfully capture a high angle frontwards view motion shot of the sister running down the hallway. And the selfie stick was more effective then I anticipated as it absorbed the shakiness of the wheel chair.

    SCENE ANALYSIS Continuation ofthe sister scene- I attached the Sony camera with the flexible tripod to the hospital bed lifting mechanism as to get a well lit, side view. Again, like the mother scene I was able to use a continuous filming style to capture the sister’s emotional reaction. The heaven scene- I have adapted a new scene based on the location’s facilities. Belmedic has a brightly lit stairwell that is perfect for representing the ‘stairway to heaven’. I arranged for a low angle medium shot of the girls legs walking up the stairs. And another shot of her coming down the stairs which will be implemented into the film after the ‘sister scene’ showing she has chosen life over death. The eyes open scene- Like the first sequence, the ‘eyes open’ scene was arranged using the same method as the ‘eyes closed’ scene so that the character was sat up-right against the wall with a pillow behind the head. This is due to the lighting being too dim when lay down. Also zooming in on the eyes as they open, creates emphasis on the intensity of the atmosphere, whilst incorporating another filming technique.

    SCENE ANALYSIS Ambulance scene- Inthis scene I wanted to capture the urgency of the situation as well as the ambulance's journey. I began with an in motion establishing shot so the audience driving up the road. This worked well as followed the vehicle as it drove past. I then devised a close up of the sirens to show that the ambulance has arrived at the house and is stationary indicating that the girl is being hospitalised. I achieved this shot by using a selfie stick to reach the ambulance roof. In order to create diversity in my shot types I wanted to capture a deep focus shot of the ambulance coming round the corner. I feel this shot will keep the audience on the edge of their seats, encouraging the ambulance to “hurry up!’ As to represent the characters point of view, I filmed inside the ambulance and when editing I intend to put it in slow motion which will communicate to viewers the characters critical condition, and that she is fading out between life and death. My favorite shot from this scene is the shot of the rear of the ambulance which I capture on my Go Pro by attaching the flexible tripod to an internal roof handle.

    SCENE ANALYSIS Cyber bullyscene- For the first scene I used the Cannon camera in order to get a high gradient shot of the ‘cyber bully’ on the phone. I used a medium shot so the audience can focus on both the subject and the visually intriguing setting. I feel using St Sava as a filming location was a good choice, as it is unique ideas that creates immediate curiosity for both English and Serbian viewers. For the following shot I track the girl as she walks not only to show her journey to the café but to also show her nature. As she walks, she passes a beggar and completely ignores him, this will resonate with the audience and prove to them that she is an evil character. I tried my best to keep the camera still whilst filming the cyber bully crossing the road, however in hindsight I should have brought the tripod. However the theme of glass and transparency is a reoccurring theme that emulates both the falseness of first impressions (as the cyber bully looks innocent) and later the self reflection of the main character when in the state of Bardo. When filming the girls laughing and looking at the mobile phone I cropped the shot to just reveal their laughing mouths and the phone. I wanted to embody the typical ‘cyber bully girl gang’ and to show how something so “harmless” as sending hurtful messages for ‘a laugh’ can have detrimental effects on the recipient. I was very lucky with the weather on 23rd of February as it was raining all morning then cleared up around 1:30 pm, as soon as I started to film. Moreover, this is why filming over ran by an hour. Yet in the end I was able to achieve the shots I set out the shoot, to a high standard.

    SCENE ANALYSIS Overdose scene- Toset the scene. I took my initiative to incorporate a new shot. I found a house that had branches in front of the window, this worked well as it had a’ classical fairytale tragedy’ feel to it and in media text this will represent entrapment, concealment and will immediately emulate a somber tone. So I slowly zoomed in on the window using my Cannon camera and captured a simple establishing shot that will set the scene, thus making my film more powerful. Internally, I shot the next scene going off the idea of the window. I thought it would be more intriguing to pan from the window to the pills and hand, as to connect the sequence of footage for the audience. Whilst the camera panned it went out of focus a little which enhanced the feeling of uncertainty, danger and fading of life. For the second shot I thought it would be more dramatic and emotional if I included a shot of the sister discovering the girl after she has taken an overdose. It also gives more meaning to the later scene where the sister is desperately running through the hospital.

    SCENE ANALYSIS Bardo scene- Ifirst wanted to establish the setting of Bardo by using a long shot so audiences can see the glass furniture, iPhone and specifically the glowing door. For the next shot I used nigh angle shot of the girl sitting at the glass table and picking up the iPhone. This worked well as there is a fait reflection on the table of the character which ties in with my theme of self reflection. I left a lot of lead room to the right of the iPhone so that later in the post production stage I can edit on ‘text bubbles’. I also create a graphic match to the ‘cyber bully girls’ as I cropped the shot to only revel the main characters mouth and iPhone. By doing a close up of the iPhone screen whilst the girl is texting the audience can see both what the girl is typing (which is- “where am I??”) and from the girls point of view which brings them closer to the character. By incorporating an eye line match to the door the audience can anticipate that the main character is intrigued and attracted to the glowing door. I created a high angle tracking shot of the girls legs walking to the door to create drama and suspence. In order to create this shot I had to place the Go Pro in my sister’s toy car and instruct the cameraman to track the movements of the character.

    SCENE ANALYSIS Bardo scene- Iused a side shot to show the girl walking to the glowing door so that the iPhone is always in the background, as an intimidating presence. Then the girl hears a faded ringtone bleeding through from the outside world, which distracts her from the glowing door. I again left lead room so I can later edit on a text bubble that says “News Update” I wanted to achieve a birds eye view of the girl sitting at the desk to foreshadow a overwhelming and sinister revelation. The cameraman had to use the ladders and the selfie stick to be able to get this shot.

    SCENE ANALYSIS Bardo scene- Anotherclose-up on the screen allows the audience to see the girl is going on a News application which builds intrigue and suspense. Again using a close up to gage the girls reaction makes her emotion of shock and horror more readable to the audience and therefore more impactful. A low angle shot of the girl looking at the glowing door makes the audience feel the that girl is overwhelmed and frightened by the news article. A close-up of her grabbing the door handle builds tension and amplifies the action. When the iPhone receives a message from the cyber bully I've used a crab shot so the iPhone is in focus and the girl is in the background to indicate the dominance and threat that the cyber bully imposes on the girls life.

    SCENE ANALYSIS Bardo scene- Asthe girl receives the cyber bully messages I organised a medium shot of the girls face with lead room either side so the abusive text bubbles can be edited on. This is so the audience can read what the messages say and see the immediate reaction of the girls emotions. As the girl walks to the door again I took a medium shot as to show her wipe her eye and her emotional journey to the glowing door. As she opens the door I chose to use a low angle medium shot to show intimidation and the shear size of the door compared to the girl. Then the girl comes back to Bardo and closes the door behind her, this allows the audience to see she's had a change of heart and has decided life over death. The side shot of her picking up the iPhone, turning it off and then slamming it down on the desk captures the glowing door fade, which represents the end of Bardo.
