2. Conventions in music videos
Music videos vary a lot in what they convey and therefore “conventions” are difficult to
pinpoint. However, they usually show the artist(s) performing the song, or mimicking they
are. They also usually have a narrative running through based on the lyrics. They are
reliant on the editing, with faster paces songs containing features such as jump cuts and
fast moving cameras to suit the song and pace whilst slower songs can contain slow-
motion.
3. How our video uses these conventions
Throughout our video we use a large amount of ‘live’ performance,
this convention of music videos is usually done in order to make the
video appear more real and also commonly used to evoke more
emotion from the audience as they see real people. We have done
it in order to reinforce the narrative of our song, through the use of
hand gestures and the visual aid of us two reinforces the theme of
teamwork in our songs lyrics.
In terms of narrative our video portrays the lyrics’ story, and how
we would visualise it in our minds. For instance during the line
‘High above the mucky muck, castle made of cloud, there sits
Wonderboy sitting oh so proudly’ we have our character
physically sitting on a hill above mud with clouds heavily visible.
We consistently portray the songs literally, including with a toy
‘hydra’ which features in the song, as this is the style and
convention that our audience would expect. This is a common
convention in music videos in order to show a meaning to the
lyrics and make it easier to see for the audience.
4. How our video goes against convention
A way in which our video does not go with conventions is
through the speed of the video. Whilst our song does have
longer, drawn out cuts during the slow parts of the song,
even when the speed increases these same slow cuts are
used and we did this in order to create humour. The slower
pace of the cuts, with fast movement from our acting,
despite the fast song creates an awkward and humorous
visual which we have found effective with our target
audience.
