Challenging and Developing Pop Punk Video Conventions
1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions
of real media products?
2. The song we used is from the pop punk genre, the videos which are usually
associated with this genre contain mostly scenes of band performance. We
subverted this convention in order to achieve a full narrative video. Our
narrative however does fit conventions as it relates to the lyrics of the song.
Our use of an emotional storyline challenges normal pop punk video
conventions because most videos from this genre feature an upbeat, positive
narrative however we felt that the lyrics leant themselves to a deeper
narrative. Nevertheless our video is of a film structure as it consists of an
introduction, main section and conclusion, which is common in videos of the
pop punk genre. This applies to Barthes’ code, enigma where he describes
the narrative device that teases the audience by presenting a puzzle or riddle
to be solved.
3. We used a range of long and medium shots to create
emphasis on the main character’s emotions and we also
used close ups to achieve reaction shots. This is common
of music videos as diegetic sound is rarely used. Our video
also featured a split screen which is uncommon and
therefore unconventional to music videos. We also used a
repetition of shots which is a widely used convention;
however we didn’t display them in exactly the same way we
instead decided to reverse them to add more diversity, thus
developing the convention further.
4. Pop punk videos usually contain over exposed
shots, which we managed to use in our video to
conform to conventions. Due to our filming
equipment we had to alter the exposure in post-
production where we increased the exposure so
the clips were equal.
5. We subverted common conventions as our
editing is at a slower pace than the piece of
music. Also when editing we managed to
get all of our shots in time however we
found that when we uploaded our video to
YouTube we found that the timing became
out of sync.
