Researchers successfully crossed Cajanus cajan (pigeonpea) with Cajanus lanceolatus, producing fertile hybrids. Analysis of the hybrids found both male sterile and male fertile plants. The hybrids also showed varying levels of resistance to bruchid beetles, indicating potential for pest resistance to be transferred from the wild to cultivated species. This demonstrates the value of wild relatives for broadening the genetic base of pigeonpea.

Cultivated pigeonpea has a narrow genetic base.Wild relatives play an important role in broadening its genetic
base. The utilization of wild species from the secondary gene pool are important as they are closely related
leading to normal chromosome recombination. This helps in the transfer of useful genes/traits to cultivated
pigeonpea (Mallikarjuna et al., 2011). Until now C. lanceolatus had not been successfully crossed as previous
report obtained F1
hybrids, but they did not reach the reproductive stage.

♦♦ Bruchid (Callosobruchus maculatus F) is well known pest
of pigeonpea in storage world wide. The present study
shows that C. lanceolatus is a good source of resistance
to bruchids. The larval/pupal period was prolonged in C.
lanceolatus(57-81days)comparedto35daysonthefemale
parent ICPL 85010 indicating the antibiosis mechanism of
resistance in the wild species. Many of the hybrids showed
different levels of resistance to bruchids.

This document reports the occurrence and molecular detection of Rice hoja blanca virus (RHBV, genus Tenuivirus) in Peru. Field surveys found RHBV symptoms in rice plants in northern Peru. Double antibody sandwich ELISA and RT-PCR testing of symptomatic plants and insect vectors confirmed the presence of RHBV. Sequencing of the viral RNA3 and RNA4 regions showed 96-99% identity to RHBV from Costa Rica and Colombia. This represents the first sequencing and characterization of RHBV in Peru. The study recommends ongoing virus surveillance and use of the described PCR primers for RHBV detection in Peruvian rice production areas.

Sorghum is the fifth most important C4 cereal crop grown globally in arid and semi-arid climatic conditions. Drought is the major cause for loss of productivity worldwide. Delayed senescence of plants leads to adaptation to drought stress conditions by staying-green and giving high yields. In order to identify and dissect the stay-green genomic regions we have developed a high resolution fine mapping population from introgression line cross RSG04008-6 (stay-green) × J2614-11 (shoot fly resistant). Nearly 1894 F2 genotypes were screened with 8 SSR in order to identify double recombinants for both the parents in the sorghum chromosome-10 long arm (SBI-10L).

This study investigated the prevalence of Toxoplasmosis in domestic animals in the Benadir region of Somalia. Blood samples were collected from 151 animals (camels, cattle, sheep, goats) and tested for Toxoplasma gondii antibodies using the Latex Agglutination Test. Overall, 24 of 151 animals (15.9%) tested positive. The highest rates of infection were found in sheep (34.5% of 29 tested) and goats (26.7% of 30 tested). Female animals also had a higher rate of infection (10.6% of 106) than males (5.3% of 45). This study provides new data on Toxoplasmosis in livestock in Somalia

This study investigated regeneration in four chickpea varieties using mature embryo axes on MS and B5 media supplemented with plant growth hormones. The varieties Vijay and Vishal showed 100% regeneration capacity on medium M3 (B5+BAP+NAA+Kinetin). Regeneration started within 11-16 days depending on the variety and medium. There was variation in number of shoots produced per explant. Profuse rooting occurred on media with 0.5-1.0 mg/L IBA. The protocol provides an efficient method for chickpea regeneration that could enable genetic transformation.

Eggplant is prone to attack by several pests including bacteria, fungi, nematodes and insects. In this study, we have analyzed phylotype of bacterial wilt Ralstonia solanacearum infection in eggplant plants collected from Bhubaneswar Orissa in India. Bacterial wilt symptomatic five plant samples were collected from brinjal field in Bhubaneswar in 2016. The samples were macerated in sterile distilled water and grown on Kelman's triphenyltetrazolium chloride TZC agar media. Total genomic DNA of the bacterium were extracted and subjected to PCR amplification using the R. solanacearum specific universal primer pair 759 760. An expected single 280 bp fragment amplified in all the samples confirmed the identity of these as Ralstonia. To reconfirmed isolate of bacterium, the amplicon was sequenced in sequencer. In NCBI blast, the nucleotide sequence was 100 similar with Ralstonia solanacearum strain RS lpxC DOB 1 AB910593 and the sequence was submitted in NCBI database under Acc. No. KY393266. To determined phylotype of strain used specific multiplex PCR with phylotype specific primers Nmult 21F1 2, Nmult 22InF, Nmult 23AF, Nmult 22RR revealed that all the five infected samples belonged to phylotype I as a 144 bp amplicon were observed in agarose gel. On the basis of above finding concluded that the bacterial wilt infected eggplant collected from Bhubaneswar was Ralostonia solanacearum, Phylotype I. Background: Peptidylarginine deiminase enzymes (PADs) convert arginine residues to citrulline in a process called citrullination or deimination. Recently, two PADs, PAD2 and PAD4, have been linked to hormone signaling in vitro and the goal of this study was to test for links between PAD2/PAD4 and hormone signaling in vivo. Methods: Preliminary analysis of Padi2 and Padi4 single knockout (SKO) mice did not find any overt reproductive defects and we predicted that this was likely due to genetic compensation. To test this hypothesis, we created a Padi2/Padi4 double knockout (DKO) mouse model and tested these mice for a range of reproductive defects. Results: Controlled breeding trials found that DKO breeding pairs, particularly males, appeared to take longer to have their first litter than wild-type FVB controls (WT), and that pups and DKO male weanlings weighed significantly less than their WT counterparts. Additionally, DKO males took significantly longer than WT males to reach puberty and had lower serum testosterone levels. Furthermore, DKO males had smaller testes than WT males with increased rates of germ cell apoptosis. Conclusions: The Padi2/Padi4 DKO mouse model provides a new tool for investigating PAD function and outcomes from our studies provide the first in vivo evidence linking PADs with hormone signaling.

The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence and associated risk factors of Gastrointestinal (GI) parasite in Cattle through semi-intensive rearing system at BAPARD campus during the period from July 2019 to June, 2020. A total of 156 samples from 39 cattle among these, 29 Bulls and 10 heifers were collected at the time of defecation or just after defecation. Samples were collected every three months of a year to find out the effect of season. All cattle are Holstein crossbred. The collected Feces samples were examined by direct smear method followed by McMaster counting technique under microscope for detection the morphology of egg at BAPARD Parasitology Lab on the day of collection. The overall prevalence of GI parasite was 26.72% and more frequent in more frequent in rainy season (57.14%) followed by summer (28.57%) and winter season (14.29%). The parasitic prevalence load was low in winter season. In endoparasitic infection, the higher prevalence of Paramphistomum spp. (19.05%) was found in rainy season followed by Haemonchus spp. (9.52%); Fasciola spp.(4.76%), Schistosoma spp. (4.76%) and Toxocara spp. (4.76%). In cattle, prevalence of Paramphistomum spp. (15.38%), Schistososma spp (3.85%) and Haemonchus spp. (7.69%) was higher in adult cattle (above 2 year) comparatively growing and young, whereas prevalence of Toxocara spp. (3.33%) was higher in young (1-1.5 year) than growing and adult cattle. In other case Female (27.5%) are slightly higher than male (26.72%) cattle. So, the investigation indicates low prevalence rate of GI parasite at semi-intensive care management system in BAPARD, Gopalganj,Bangladesh.

Inter Simple Sequence Repeats (ISSR) markers were utilized to identify the levels of heritable varieties and patterns of the populace structure among the five populaces of Pteris biaurita, a natural fern in India. A comprehensive examination was directed in three replicates at 2013-14 seasons in the Western Ghats, South India. Five wild P. biaurita, accessions (maiden hair) were assessed for genotyping studies. Results demonstrated a pivotal discrepancy among genotypes for they were characterized in view of this uniqueness in four groups by the genetic cluster examination. In this trial, ISSR primers amplified 63 polymorphic groups. In view of the genetic identity data, genotypes were figured and differed from 0.5714 to 0.6984. The percentage of polymorphism indicated predominant genotype that may be utilized for the conservation of species. ISSR appeared to be an obliging marker for prediction of genotype inside a closed group of inter specific populace in the investigation territory

Three new chickpea varieties have been developed with enhanced drought tolerance, disease resistance, and increased yield. These varieties were created using genomics-assisted breeding by ICRISAT and ICAR. The new varieties are awaiting approval for cultivation by Indian farmers. Genomics-assisted breeding has delivered six high-yielding chickpea varieties to India in the last three years. Improved chickpea varieties are needed due to drought threats in chickpea growing regions, as drought can cause up to 60% yield losses annually. ICRISAT is leading efforts in genetic analysis of drought tolerance and disease resistance in chickpea using advanced sequencing technologies.

ICRISAT and HarvestPlus signed an agreement for scientific and technical collaboration between the two global organizations. Mr Arun Baral, CEO, HarvestPlus, and Dr Jacqueline d’Arros Hughes, Director General, ICRISAT, signed the Memorandum of Understanding, which is made and entered into by IFPRI on behalf of its HarvestPlus Program. On the occasion, Dr Hughes said, After 17 years of fruitful collaboration on biofortification research, we have now decided to elevate this partnership. ICRISAT and HarvestPlus will work together more closely, making available micronutrient-rich varieties, high-quality seed and related technologies to the farming communities and consumers. This will contribute to eliminating micronutrient malnutrition in the drylands.
