2. What is Copyright?
Exclusive legal right to copy, or permit to be
copied, some specific work of art.

3. What is Copyright?
Created work includes:
 Music – songs, arrangements, scores, recording, etc.
 Writing – novels, poems, stories, journalism, plays, blog post, etc.
 Visual art – painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, etc.
 Dance choreography
 Movies
 Computer software
 Architecture

4. What is Copyright?
 From the moment original work is created, it is automatically protected
by copyright.
A good practice is to mark created work with © and your name and date
of its creation.
If your work is copyrighted, no one can make a copy of it without your
permission.

5. What is Copyright?
 The owner of copyrighted work has exclusive right to:
Copy the work
Issue copies of the work
Rent or lend the work
Perform, show or play the work
Communicate the work to be public
Make an adaptation of the work

6. Copyright Infringement
“Copyright infringement is the use or production of copyright-protected
material without the permission of the copyright holder.” (Kenton)
Individuals and companies who copyright their work, do so, to ensure that
they can profit from their efforts.
“Other parties may be granted permission to use those works through
licensing arrangements or buy the works from the copyright holder.”
(Kenton)

7. Fair Use for Educators
Fair use applies to all copyrighted work
regardless of the media in which they are
fixed.

8. Fair Use for Educators
 Fair use allows limited use of copyrighted material
without permission from the copyright holder for
purposes such as:
 Criticism
Comment
News reporting
Teaching
Scholarship and research

The Technology, Education and
Copyright Harmonization Act
amended Section 110(2) and 112 of
the Copyright Act to facilitate the
growth of distance learning.

11. TEACH Act Restrictions and Conditions
The TEACH Act is subject to the following restrictions:
1. Students are to be notified of copyright protection on materials given.
2. Copies of the works cannot be made available to students for longer than the class session
3. Institutions must have technical measures in place to limit access to enrolled students and to prevent
download and further distribution of materials
4. Institutions must raise awareness to faculty, students and relevant staff on copyright policies and provide
them with necessary information on fair use. Just to name a few.
