Furthermore, during the winter months, basketball was the only sport I had access too because there
were indoor courts available. These environmental factors inclined me to choose basketball as my
main recreation in terms of competitive sport and now it is one of my favorite sports. It was hard for
me to engage in my previous recreational activities because nobody enjoyed playing soccer or cricket.
This constrained my choices in terms of what kind of recreational activities I wanted to do. Another
factor that separated me from playing sports such as soccer and cricket were economic factors. During
the winter season, the only way I could play these sports was if I joined the indoor leagues but these
leagues were quite expensive. Coming from a middle class family, these extra expenses were hard to
manage and sustain. Soon it became too much and so I had to quit and find other recreational activities

story this way but it s true. Once, a fifty year old African American woman was brought into our ED
with one hour of facial droop and weakness. We were immediately concerned for a stroke, and the
neurology team agreed. Imaging ruled out a hemorrhage, and neurology cleared us to use
thrombolytics, but the patient s blood pressure was a staggering 220/120. After maximum dose
nicardipine therapy, her pressures still hovered above the threshold for tPA. Time ticked away and we
grew anxious as the window for thrombolysis narrowed. I looked across to the patient s room and
noticed several of her family members bawling at the top of their lungs. That s not helping, I thought.

1.) I selected this research study to analyze by first performing an advanced search on the onesearch
databases for the Achievement Gaps of Black and White students in education. This research article
appeared in the results as I quickly looked over titles of interest. I then skimmed through both, the
abstract and the conclusion to make sure it was first a primary research study. After assuring that it
was a research study and not an analysis, I then looked over the format of the study to assess the level
of difficulty it will be to dissect and pull information from the article. This particular article stood out

For This Film Analysis, I Viewed Two Movies. The Films
For this film analysis, I viewed two movies. The films viewed were Boys Don t Cry and A Soap. The
movies viewed had the common theme of sexuality. The 2 films both had themes regarding sexuality
and trangenderism. With that my thesis is, Sexuality and its affects and reactions in regards to
interpersonal and familial relationships.
To begin we start we the film that was viewed first, Boys Don t Cry. Boys Don t Cry offers an insight
to the impressions of sexuality and transgenderism in the 1990 s. Five minutes into the film it shows
Brandon Teena being chased by a mob of angry guys calling him a dyke (for him having slept with

Moving past this film onto the second film, A Soap, we find a more obvious contrast to the
environment set up in Boys Don t Cry. The main thing being there is no outright or violent hostility to
out transgender character. This film featured a male to female pre op transsexual Veronica. She can
basically walk around and talk to her neighbors wearing women s clothing and doesn t get any actual
hostility for it. The other main character Charlotte does occasionally poke fun with witty remarks but
it appears to be more in good fun than any actual disdain. The only time her language toward Veronica
becomes hostile is when she develops conflicting romantic feelings toward her and is drunk. But
essentially all other contact is cordial.
Same goes for familial interaction. The there is more of an air of disapproval in those conversations.
The mother does appear to still accept Veronica as her child for most of the movie. There is no

The approach of this study will take the epistemological position and a qualitative research design.
Humphries (2008) asserts that qualitative research focusses on the subjective and recognises that the
researcher will affect the data that is produced and therefore the outcome of the research. Denzin
Lincoln (2005:3) state that Qualitative researchers study things in their natural settings attempting to
make sense of, or to interpret, phenomena in terms of the meanings people bring to them .
Quantitative research on the other hand, claims to be objective, removing the researcher s views and
values from the study. While traditionally quantitative data has been deemed to produce more reliable
or valid data, it does not suffice to capture the complexities of the human experience as it assumes a
positivist epistemology.
This research has taken a narrative methodolgy as this approach recognises that realities are socially
constructed, and that human actions and agency are contingent on socio cultural, political and
historical influences (Gill and Goodson, 2011). Using in depth semi structured interviews will ensure
that trans people have the best opportunity to express their story and impart the information that they
