Discuss your idea with an

Th e proposals must be succinctly
written and clearly chronicle facts,

reasoning and an argument for study

Ask the questions:
1. What is the research about?
2. Why is it important?

If a format for writing is
given, use it. Check grammar, word
count and remember format and
brevity are important (12-point font,
legible and with a generous margin

read and comment on) to keep the

before submission, they may fi nd a

Synopsis of the Problem
In the recent past, a number of organizations have been adversely affected by the turnover rates that have been increasing progressively as from 2009. This has witnessed an increment in the number of organizations closing shop from approximately 1.8 million to more than 2 million between 2009 and 2012
(Larson, Lakin, & Bruininks, 1998)
. Aspects that include workforce recruitment and training costs, team dynamics and time restrictions in discovering and hiring newer talents have been adversely affected by the increase in worker turnover rates and have resulted in increment in expenditures. The unconstructive effects of the elevated employee turnover rates , therefore, informs the study on why the workers opt to desert they jobs even as organizational administrators strive to enhance the employee retention rates through increment in salaries and establishment of more favorable work milieus.
Statement of Purpose
This paper is therefore, written with the objective of analyzing the effect of various aspects, for instance, increased employee turnover rates, on the organization as well as their contribution to the increasing rates of employees opting to desert their jobs.
Description of the Action Research Project
This study will make use of two key research methodologies, namely; qualitative and quantitative research methodologies
(Barton, 2006)
. Given that the two methods facilitates the acknowledgement of rationale behind the increment in dissertation rates in addition to giving insight on how organization suffering from reduced employee retention rates function.
Reasons for the Proposal
Studies on the factors affecting employee retention and impacts of increased turnover rates have indicated that managers in organizations that have been acquired by another tend to dessert their jobs as a consequence of not being offered an opportunity and ample time to align to the novel organization
(Allen & Bryant, 2012)
. Additionally, workers tend to desert their jobs as a consequence of lack of faith owing to instability experienced by the mangers leaving their positions. A B S T R A C T
This paper reports evidence on the effectiveness of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) as a strategy
communication and management-control device. This study first reviews communication and management
control literatures that identify attributes of effective communication and control of strategy. Second, the
study offers a model of communication and control applicable to the BSC. The study then analyzes empirical
interview and archival data to model the use and assess the communication and control effectiveness of the
BSC. The study includes data from multiple divisions of a large, international manufacturing company. Data
are from BSC designers, administrators, and North American managers whose divisions are objects of the
BSC. The study accumulates evidence regarding the challenges of designing and implementing the BSC faced
by even a large, well-funded company. These findings may be generalizable to other companies adopting or
considering adopting the BSC as a strategic and management control device.
Data indicate that this specific BSC, as designed and implemented, is an effective device for controlling
corporate strategy. Results also indicate disagreement and tension between top and middle management
regarding the appropriateness of specific aspects of the BSC as a communication, control and evaluation
mechanism. Specific results include evidence of causal relations between effective management control,
motivation, strategic alignment and beneficial effects of the BSC. These beneficial effects include changes in

and qualitative methods, and to apply appropriate methods to the
questions of interest.
Conventional statistical analyses were applied to data collected using
the structured questionnaire.

200 employees was obtained in May 1994, from the Victorian

Several features of the study design determined the sample
size.
The sample was required to be sufficiently large to be able
to observe patterns across firms.
To conduct simple inferential statistical evaluation of

However, the sample size was to be limited because the
study design required semi-structured interviews and a

researcher.

to be appropriate in this context.
The firms were selected across industry categories with the
aim of obtaining the participation of firms of comparable size,
and with a variety of strategic orientations. .
In total, researcher contacted 55 profit centre managers. .
Out of 55, finally 36 managers were available to give
feedback. While 19 managers refused to participate in this
study, and final response rate was 65 percent.

In order to confirm and find possible contradiction in the data
collected from profit centre managers, researcher selected
12 manufacturing managers from sample firms.
Researcher formally got permission from all of the profit
centre managers to pursue a follow-up interview with a

12 manufacturing managers.
The interviews were conducted between June 1994 and
January 1995.

and impartial.

raised by the researcher are supported by the data; whether
potential alternative propositions have been `overlooked‘;
whether all cases were systematically evaluated before
propositions were raised; whether the researcher saw only what
they set out to see in the data; and whether the process is
reproducible.
The use of a systematic analytical protocol such as the Miles
and Huberman (1994) data display approach used here,
enhances trust in the results of qualitative analysis.

followed a four steps qualitative analysis protocol.

the qualitative data, and this variable was hypothesized to be related to
strategy. The structure of the matrix reflects this theoretical proposition.

QSR NUDIST. NUDIST was used in this study to code all of the raw,
unsummarised interview transcripts, by associating the sentences in the
transcript with one or more themes defined in a hierarchical coding

Each sentence was given a text-unit number in NUDIST. In this way, each
text unit is identified as relating to one or more pre- determined thematic
codes.

It is a qualitative analysis software package distributed by
Qualitative solutions and Research Pty Ltd, La Trobe
University, Bundoora, Victoria, Australia.
34. Step 2: A data sheet was prepared manually for each transcript. The text in
the transcripts was reconfigured and reported under conceptual headings
using NUDIST.
The reorganized transcripts were then summarized manually under similar
conceptual headings to those used in the coding scheme.
35. Step 3: The data sheets prepared for each transcript were then
combined in a multi-case matrix format.
For this study, these matrices and the analyses they supported
were focused on the variables to be intercorrelated.

Each case was classified initially as `predominantly cost
minimisation', `mixed' or `predominantly differentiation' based on
scores on the scaled strategy variable.

Thus, the findings were triangulated against the quantitative
analysis of participant-rated data on variables similar to those
explored in the qualitative data.
For example, scaled responses were collected on strategy
using Porter‘s (1980) typology in a form similar to that used in
survey-based research (Govindarajan and Fisher, 1990).
The scaled responses reflected an over- whelming importance
of differentiation strategies in the sample. This quantitative
analysis was compared with the elaborated responses on the
firms' competitive edge and strategic priorities.
These quantitative and qualitative analyses `converged' to
reflect a similar strategic profile across the sample.
Data triangulation validates data and research by cross verifying the same
information
39. The proposition emerged that firms experience greater difficulty
integrating performance criteria relating to customer
responsiveness with efficiency criteria than they did integrating
quality and efficiency criteria.

models, the findings from this study raised new
