A Christmas Carol Essay
Crafting an essay on the subject of "A Christmas Carol" presents a unique set of challenges.
Firstly, one must navigate the extensive themes woven into Charles Dickens' timeless narrative,
from the exploration of redemption and the consequences of greed to the portrayal of societal
injustices. Delving into these themes requires a profound understanding of the text and its
historical context, demanding meticulous analysis and interpretation.
Furthermore, tackling such a well-known and widely studied piece of literature adds pressure to
produce original insights and interpretations. It's essential to offer fresh perspectives that
contribute to the ongoing discourse surrounding the novella while avoiding clichГ©s and
superficial analysis.
Moreover, crafting a compelling essay demands the ability to structure arguments cohesively and
support them with textual evidence. This involves careful planning and organization to ensure
that each point contributes to the overarching thesis while maintaining clarity and coherence
throughout the essay.
Additionally, addressing the nuances of character development, narrative techniques, and
symbolism within "A Christmas Carol" requires a keen analytical eye and attention to detail.
Unraveling the layers of meaning embedded in Dickens' prose necessitates close reading and
critical thinking skills.
Finally, writing an essay on "A Christmas Carol" involves capturing the spirit of the holiday
season while engaging with complex literary themes—a delicate balance that requires
sensitivity and insight.
In conclusion, crafting an essay on this topic demands a combination of scholarly rigor,
creativity, and sensitivity to the nuances of both the text and the holiday spirit it embodies.

How Have Civil Rights Changed Since The 1960 s
The development of civil rights women since the 1950 s and 1960 s has been
tremendous, but there are still some things that have not changed. Before, women
were prohibited from many of the everyday things in our society. Women could not
obtain credit cards; they could not attend Ivy League schools, or go on birth control
pills. Recently, on March 30, the U.S women s soccer team filed a complaint to U.S
Soccer for wage discrimination. The individual players of the team earn as little as
40% of what players on the U.S men s soccer team earns. Not only do they earn
significantly less than the men players, but they also play on damaged and dangerous
fields, such as the one during their World Cup Victory Tour friendly against Trinidad
and Tobago. Even... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Women lost their jobs along with possessing a limited amount of freedoms.
Women could not go on birth control pills because it was illegal. This prohibition
limited much of women s rights. It obliterated the freedom women had to choose
whether they wanted children or not. The usage of birth control was legalized in
1957 only for severe menstrual distress , not as a contraceptive. Not only did
women not have a choice in whether they wanted kids or not, but they also did not
have the freedom to achieve a better education; they were restricted from learning at
Ivy League schools. Schools, such as Yale and Harvard, did not admit female
students until 1969; for some other schools, such as Harvard, they did not accept
female students until as late as 1977. Lastly, women could not experience equality in
their workplaces. They were kept out of administrative positions. Furthermore, for
every dollar a man earned a woman earned only 60 cents, and a woman of color
earned 42 cents. Thus, along with the limitations on their freedoms, women
encountered many

Relapse Of Sustainable Rehabilitation
Sustainable Rehabilitation is the only way to truly make a dent in addiction.
Addicts must be offered an alternative to their previous lifestyle. A large percentage
of addicts who go to rehab, often get out and return to the same habit of their
addiction after a period of time. Short term rehabilitation is not as effective as a
long term program aimed at changing habits and routine. In order to prevent
relapses and in extreme cases death, a variety of methods are used to help the addict
maintain a clean and sober life. The end goal is a sustained rehabilitation that leads to
a productive and successful life.
Scientists and physicians say that addiction is a complex, but treatable disease that
affects brain function and behavior. The use of... Show more content on

For example, methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone (including a new long
acting formulation) are effective in helping individuals addicted to heroin or other
opioids stabilize their lives and reduce their illicit drug use. Acamprosate, disulfiram,
and naltrexone are medications approved for treating alcohol dependence. Medically
assisted detoxification is only the first stage of addiction treatment and by itself does
little to change long term drug abuse. Medically assisted detoxification can safely
manage the acute physical symptoms of withdrawal for some individuals. It can also
pave the way for effective long term addiction treatment. Detoxification alone is
rarely sufficient to help addicted individuals achieve long term abstinence. Thus,
patients should be encouraged to continue drug treatment following detoxification.
Motivational enhancement and incentive strategies, beginning at initial patient
intake, can improve treatment

A Research Study On The Vaccination Schedule
The study is significant because certain types of HPV can lead to venereal warts,
which can ultimately lead to cancer in male and female patients. This disease is
preventable, but uptake of the vaccine has been below the expected level since its
introduction. One of the goals of Healthy People 2020 is to reduce the proportion of
females with HPV infection. The primary means of preventing cervical, anal, penile
and oropharyngeal cancer resulting from HPV is completing the vaccination series.
Adherence to the vaccination schedule is an important health initiative, so nursing
researchthat helps to increase adherence is essential.
This research study will attempt to increase compliance through interviewing
patients, providing education, reducing barriers, offering the vaccination and
following up using phone calls. The methods used in this study could be applied in
other populations because an understanding on reasons for hesitancy and non
compliance will be better understood. The reasons will differ between population
types, so interventions would have to be individualized to meet the needs of the
specific group. The goal is to increase vaccine compliance and reduce the incidence
of HPV and the complications that may result from this virus.
Research Aim The aim of the research is to help identify the health beliefs that
adolescents age 11 20 and their parents have regarding the risk of becoming infected
with HPV. Since the compliance in males is especially low, the

Odysseus Character Analysis
On an individual s quest to figure out who they are, it is necessary that they test
themselves and see who they are in relation to society. One character that has
inspired generations of people with his craftiness is the Iliadic hero known as
Odysseus Laertiades, who threw himself into danger at every chance to prove himself
on his journey home after the Trojan war. In the epic poem entitled The Odysseythat
was written by Homer, Odysseusshows how he views himself in relation to others
and carries himself in front of individuals he meets. One character that has been
subject to Odysseus s craftiness was Poseidon s son, Polyphemus the Cyclops.
Odysseus desires to explore Polyphemus s cave, and upon being noticed with his
men, the Cyclops asks who they are, and Odysseus responds We are from Troy,
Akaians, blown off course...We served under Agamemnon...we stand beholden for
your help, or any gifts...as custom is to honor strangers (9.280 290). Odysseus tries
to win the support of Polyphemus by bragging about how he s a soldier that just
arrived at his home, and as guests, Odysseus and his crew are entitled to the help
and gifts by the host of the cave. In another scene, Odysseus also tries a similar
routine of asking for help with the PhaiГЎkian princess named Nausikaa when he
mentions near the Altar of Apollo...I had troops under me (6.185 186). Odysseus
presents himself as a veteran that is entitled to help from whoever he meets, and
Polyphemus couldn t care less. Odysseus tends to attempt to woo those he meets
to try to get their support. Polyphemus is unmoved by Odysseus s words and
further questions Odysseus asking where was it, now, you left your ship (9.300
304). Odysseus replies with a lie that Poseidon broke their ship on the rocks near
the shore (9.309 311). Odysseus is just exploring the island and Polyphemus s cave,
but he formulated the identity of a shipwrecked sailor. He presented himself and his
crew as helpless strangers that need help to make Polyphemus let his guard down,
and make the Cyclops feel that he controls the destiny of the men and they have no
means of escape. When it comes time for the men escape to Polyphemus s cave, they
can make a quick escape without worrying about
Judith Jarvis Thomson s A Defense Of Abortion Essay
Judith Jarvis Thomson s A Defense of Abortion is a uniquely reasoned argument for
the right to abortion that uses strong analogies to challenge pro life arguments that
are based on the premise that a human life begins at the moment of conception. In this
paper I will argue that Thomson is correct in her view and that her analogies solidify
her argument, which then becomes impervious to criticism from philosophers like
Keith J. Pavlischek or David B. Hershenov who bring up other factors irrelevant to
Thomson argument that are easily disputable by facts. Thomson starts her paper by
clarifying that while she does not agree with the premise that life begins at the
moment of conception she is willing to accept it in her argument to prove that it is a
counterpoint to abortionthat is as weak as the rest of the pro life argument. In her
essay, Thomson uses three major analogies to illustrate different scenarios to which
abortion would be considered. The Violinist Analogy describes a pregnancythat has
been induced by rape and, foreshadows to a section later in the essay, where she
goes into detail about where the line is drawn when two innocent lives are at risk
and what is the third party s role in the problem solving. It is a case in which the
Society of Music Lovers has kidnapped you and attached you to a revered violinist
who needs your kidneys to support him so he can live. The doctor says it is a nine
month procedure, after which, he will be healthy again and you will

each of the efforts he selected were successful because his hopes to build an
enduring franchise worked, even in established and large markets. Bezos has
inspired a willingness to continually learn and adjust, which has helped Amazon
rise to the top. There were risk factors identified in the report and suggested a long

The Drug Of The Pharmaceutical Industry
The birth of pharmaceutical industry has increased the longevity of our lives in
society and eradicated diseases such as chicken pox and hives, but has created an
addiction to prescription drugs in America. The concept of prescription has made
society to believe that taking pharmaceutical drugs comes without a consequence.
Though these drugs come with consequence, the positive effects of the
pharmaceutical industry helped eradicate diseases that would be a potential threat to
our lively hood in today s society. The pharmaceutical industry supports health
development and increased the quality of life, but the controversy of this companies
is that they are profiting billions of dollars each year off our addiction and reliance

2009. These were more chronic pain from trauma. 1 out of 4 patients in result
ended in long term prescription lasting 120 days with more than 10 separate
prescriptions. Opiates that are often prescribed are codeine, OxyContin and
Vicodin which are the same opioids that are sold in the streets like heroin. Both
these drugs come from the opium poppy, but the difference is the legal and illegal
way of obtaining these drugs. This has created society s dependence on legal drugs
with pharmaceutical companies making huge profits off of our addiction. Though
these drugs are approved through a process by the FDA, they have openly admitted
that there is no such thing as a totally safe drug . (Frontline, Dangerous

require no identification when purchasing. Our society is bombarded with
advertisements promoting prescribed and over the counter drugs stating that if you
have these list of problems being shown to ask your doctor to take drugs. Big
Pharma is the nick name that was given to the world s big pharmaceutical industry.
These companies make billions of dollars in profit each year by selling drugs and

signs located behind the Neon Museum. The museum is housed at the formerly

famous African American architect who design the first LAX theme building). From
my understanding the purpose of the Neon Museum is to display old iconic signs
that use to hang on the Las Vegas Strip. To be totally honest, I had no real
expectation going to the museum. I just figure I was going to see some old signs.
Which I might add did not disappoint as I gawk at the dramatic vintage signs it was

The Human Dimension Of The Army
The Human Dimension is a concept that the Army has been looking into over the
past years as the dynamics have changed. Soldiers and DOD Civilians make up
today s fighting force. As such, it is important to look at the whole person. The
purpose of the whole person concept is to notice how our cognitive, physical, social
and spiritual attributes not only effect the Army, but how it will shape the future of
our fighting forces.
Cognitive

It is now an established fact that there is an intense linkage between migration and
informal sector, specially that in the urban sector. Number of literature suggests that
there exist a two way causation between these two factors. While migration helps in
booming of urban informal sector, similarly this development of informal sector
attracts further migration. Number of studies has been made in this regard. There are
various issues through which one can interlink rural to urban migration and informal
sector. Regarding the interlinkage between rural to urban migration and urban
informal sector Banerjee (1983) came up with some interesting findings. The starting
point of the study was the applicability of the probabilistic model of... Show more

The study suggests that majority of the people who are migrating into the urban
sector are illiterate and of unskilled type. As a result they become unable to get a
formal job in the urban formal job market. A major portion of this unskilled migrated
labour force joins to the urban informal job market. Finally this low quality of
migration has resulted into low quality urbanization in urban India which ultimately
led to an urban decay. Studying the interrelationship between rural to urban migration
and urban informal sector Meng (2001) find that the issue is controversial .
According to the author, most classical migration models treat the informal sector as
a temporary employment opportunity for migrants (Todaro, 1969; Fields, 1975),
though some empirical studies challenged this assumption and suggested that the
informal sector may play an important role in economic development (ILO, 1972;
Bhattacharya, 1993; Banerjee, 1983). The study found that two groups, namely wage
earner and self employed, in the informal sector have played different roles in
attracting migrants when compared to the formal sector. While the wage earner
group provides temporary employment opportunities to migrants, the self employed
group appears to be a desirable employment choice for the in migrants. One of the
interesting finding of the study is that migrants having higher human capital choose
to be self employed
The Crossing Of The Delaware And The Victory At Trenton
A E s The Crossing is an exceptional dramatization of the crossing of the Delaware
and the victory at Trenton. It depicts the actions that George Washington and his men
took leading up to the renowned battle. The main points portrayed by the film are
relatively accurate; however, there are still many historical inaccuracies. Washington
s use of profanity in the film, the weather during the march to Trenton, and the flag
flown by the American army are just a few. George Washington
s dialogue in The
Crossing is the least accurate element of the film. Washington s leadership style was
the direct opposite. Nearly thirty years before the crossing of the Delaware,
Washington made clear how he felt about profanity in his Rules of Civility. His
twenty second rule stated: Use no reproachful language against anyone, neither curse,
nor revile. Ten years later, he made this clear in his military affairs:
Colonel Washington has observed that the men of his regiment are very profane
and reprobate. He takes this opportunity to inform them of his great displeasure at
such practices and assures them that if they do not leave them off, they shall be
severely punished. The officers are desired, if they hear any man swear or make use
of an oath or execration, to order the offender twenty five lashes immediately, without
court martial. For the second offense, he will be more severely punished (Sparks).
Washington s loathing for expletives persisted even 30 years later as seen in

Foam Boffer Weapons
Making a foam boffer sword for LARPing (Live Action Role Playing) is quite
simple and affordable. Boffer swords are simply handmade weapons used on the
battlefield during LARP events, which typically consist of either a small group of
friends or a massive gathering of many people. They are quite sturdy and withstand
a large amount of hits as long as they are made well. This depends largely on the
amount of effort and time given to the project, as well as choices of materials used.
Foam boffer swords allow the LARPer to express his or her creativity, while
producing a weapon that will aid them on their adventures. In order to begin making
a foam boffer sword, certain materials and tools are required. Most importantly, a

technology. In an event known as the cloudburst , a whole society has their
personal information revealed. Due to the horrors of having no privacy, the people
went into hiding for protection. Since the leaks of information came from using
advanced technology, the people also decided to no longer use this type of
material. This type of technology uses the Internet, which was also destroyed for
personal safety. Now the people live in a society where libraries and books serve as

One of the side effects of technology is how all information is eventually scrambled
and means something incredibly different than the original idea. Comparatively,
Telephone , a popular children s game, is where a child makes up a sentence and the
sentence is passed by word of mouth in a circle. Once the sentence is back to the
beginning, the children often laugh at how different the sentence is from the original.
This is exactly what the advanced technology does. In the process of trying to
understand the original message, advanced technology can make everything out to be
a lot worse than it actually is. What once was an inspiring story about how to grow a
vegetable can turn into a story about animal rights. With technology, information is
moved around a lot faster, meaning there is a higher chance that something will be
misunderstood in the middle. Everything that is put through technology is changed
and altered. Correspondingly, a techno pessimist believes that people should solve
problems, They do not have faith in technological fixes to solve social problems,
instead emphasizing moral or political solutions (Techno optimism versus Techno
pessimism). A techno pessimist believes that problems should not be solved by
technology. Technology will always use logical problem solving techniques. Humans
will always include emotional connection to create solutions. Technology may miss
vital information that only the human heart can process and find
Withdrawal Of The Syrian Refugee Crisis
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This policy memo addresses the current possible U.S. options to the Syrian refugee
crisis. I have identified three different options: Increase Syrian refugee resettlement
commitments, establish safe zones in northern Syria, or seal the Syrian border. As
conditions continue to deteriorate in Syria and the number of refugees continues to
increase, it is critical that you strengthen the U.S. position in the country of Syria.
The establishment of safe zones would align our moral, strategic, and diplomatic
interests more than any other possible policy. Half of the electorate or more wants
refugees to establish safe homelands near or in their country, if possible, reducing the
perceived risk of increasing potential terrorism in the United States, the notion
grounded in reality or not. Also, historically, refugees have been allowed safe harbor
in United States and we could continue in such tradition, in the safest possible way.
BACKGROUND
The conflict in Syria between the government of Bashar al Assad and various other
forces, which started in the spring of 2011, continues to cause displacement within
the country and across the region. By the end of 2014, approximately 7.6 million
people were internally displaced and 3.7 million Syrians had fled the country since
the start of the conflict. Over 21.5 million people, or half of the country s pre war
population, have been displaced. The refugee situation is urgent, and it has placed an
enormous burden on

You wake up and on your morning commute the city skyline is illuminated in pink.

The Thing In The Forest Summary
In this short story The Thing in The Forest has many types of Figurative Language
but mostly it represents Symbolism. One major symbolism is the thing which the
girls, Penny and Primrose encounter while they were in the forest, represents the the
bad things of WWII.
Penny and Primrose were two little girls who were evacuees. This story takes
place in 1940 1941 when British cities were being bombed by German warplanes.
They had been sent away from their home by train to this mansion next to a forest
with other children . They would be there until they had a foster family. On their
coats they had their names pinned down and they were wearing gas masks just in
case enemy bombs fell their way. Their mothers had not explained to them where
they were going . They thought they were being punished for not being good
children. They became great friends on the train after sharing a piece of chocolate
and and apple. They both agreed to stick to each other. After arriving the next day
they were sent out to play while it was lunch time. They went outside and saw the
opportunity to go into the forest. Alys who was one of the younger girls wanted to go
with them but Penny and Primrose ran until they lost her. After a little while in the
forest they experienced and unforgettable event. That s when they saw or believed
they saw a thing in the forest (Byatt 324)
In The Thing in The Forest the thing represents all the nasty, wrong, bad things that
were going on in WWII. For example,

Videogames Don t Have a Negative Effect on Kids
There are many things that today s society worries about; television, role models,
etc. The biggest ones are those that affect the children. One that many people
overlook is video games, a national past time in almost every home. It is clear that
they can cause changes in children, but are the changes good or bad? Do video games
have a negative effect on kids?
Personally, I felt there was nothing wrong with video games. I play them for
fourteen hours or more a week, and I ve been doing fine in life. I made it to a fine

video game contests. I still have that Star Fox t shirt even to today. Still, I ... Show

In Electronic Gaming Monthly, there was an article that explained the top five
negative aspects of videogames. Isolation: people can become obsessed over a
videogame. Shawn Woolley, a young fan of the popular Everquest, committed due
to bankruptcy. The game makes you pay as you play, and he played too much.
Addiction: people have been known to forego work, relationships, and even food
for the sake of their online play. Physical problems: many of today s games have
vibrating controllers to give a more interactive feeling. A 15 year old kid developed
hand arm vibration syndrome, burning sensations and inflammation in the hands and
arms, due to playing on his Playstation too much. Violence: Senator Joseph
Lieberman ran a campaign against Mortal Kombat due to its spine ripping gore.
Even Captain Kangaroo was brought in, explaining that videogames teach lessons to
kids that would cause a parent to faint. Violence numbing: when a child plays a
violent videogame, the terrible news in today s world barely faze them since they
have seen worse in the videogame, even though it wasn t real.
I was shocked at reading this, and though that this clearly proved that videogames
should be taken off the market, but another article changed my mind.

Financial Advisor Research Papers
Financial advising is one of the many occupations one can purse with a business
finance degree. Even though financial advisors are not well known, they do
multiple things to help the global economy. A financial advisors job tends to focus
on helping individuals with 401k s, retirement plans, and other saving plans that
require budgeting. Even though this job is limited to helping with these few
plans, this job is very difficult and requires tedious amounts of work. The level of
difficulty is the reasoning behind many not consider a job in this field. In the

Danish prefer to be greeted individually with a firm handshake while maintaining a

They expect people to do things the right way, insisting on a certain form of

Evolution Of Superman Film
The posters for each superman film reflect the evolution of superman and filmic

The posters for Superman 1978 reflects the evolution of the Superman films to a

The poster shows a hint of character devepoment from the all good clichГ©d
superman to a better rounded character. This shown by the use of destroyed city6
background and as well as the ray of sunlight behind superman and the use of a low
angle shot that shows the strength of a character. The usual superman saves the city
all by himself notion is abolished in the poster with the use of fighter jets in the
background emphasising san event that is somewhat a national emergency in which
the man steel requires assistance. However poster 3 only show the fact that man of
steel might have become faster ( use of blurred buildings) and is experiencing some
type off physical strain. Which in this case aslo reflects on character development but
other than that , the extent in which poster three reflects on the evolution of
Superman is limited.
In terms of filmic technology posters one and two show a limited amount limited
comic technology because of the comical look to the filmic posters. the costume
which superman wears in the second poster is mainly made of ordinary cloth
which reiterates simplicity .where as in the filmic posters for Man of steel show a
lot of development in filmic technology as the poster(s) have more detail. And the
man of steel s costume seems of be made out a micro fibre , latex like material that

Public Opinion In American Politics
Public opinion is often defined as the collective views, attitudes, and beliefs of the
population about a particular subject. Many suggest it is a crucial aspect of
American politics considering it affects how the country is governed, which
explains why it is such a key component in modern Political Science. There are a
series of matters that one can focus on in this field of study; nonetheless, I wanted to
take a closer look upon a topic that we did not cover in the course, and that is of my
interest. For some time now, environmental issues have been growing in prominence
to Americans since the environmental movement of the 1960s when Rachel Carson

The movie Juarez, starring Paul Muni, Bette Davis, Brian Aherne and Claude Rains,
has the perfect story line. There s action, love, violence and heartbreak, but most
importantly, it brings attention to a piece of history that is rarely recognized:
monarchs in Mexico. Louis Napoleon III of France, played by Claude Rains, saw the
American Civil War as an opportunity to advance the French government. Louis
wanted to establish French influence in Mexico, which he knew was against the
Monroe Doctrine. He took advantage of the fact that America was in a weak state
due to the war, and could therefore not intervene as per the Monroe Doctrine. In the

Although Maximilian had many supporters, it was not enough to fight against the
Mexican Republicans and Benito Juarez. On several occasions in the movie,
Maximilian was asked to step down from his position as emperor and allow
Mexico to go back to its former democracy. Juarez sent messengers as well as
letters, and the final letter he sent mentioned a threat of Maximilian s blood
spilling if he did not oblige. Maximilian would not step down and insisted he was
doing what he was sent there to do. As the Civil War in the United States ended,
the United States was finally able to help Mexico fight against the French. This led
to a weakening of the French presence in Mexico and eventually Napoleon decided
to pull out his troops. Napoleon was very persistent in his efforts of getting
Maximilian to leave Mexico, and almost succeeded, but not before Carlotta could
go back to France and beg him to change his mind, and instead support the
monarchy. Napoleon would not budge on his decision and Maximilian gave in
and wrote his letter of abdication. When Maximilian read his letter to his soldiers,
they were extremely upset and General Mejia, who was an Indian and never
showed emotion, cried. Colonel Lopez protested Maximilian s abdication and told
him that if he left, it was surely a death sentence for all of them. Maximilian could

Is There Too Much Ownership Or Knowledge
Ownership has not always held the value to humans that it holds in the modern
world. Long before philosophers, hunter gatherer groups lived without any concept
of ownership, but also lacked inequality and greed. It may be argued that, after these
hunter gatherers but before the modern time, owning and caring for possessions
provided a way to move humanity forward, as goods could be difficult to come by
and even more difficult to replace. However, ownershipin present times and society
is detrimental to character, as mass production allows ownership without genuine
care and encourages a large degree of conformity. Today, things are made, sold, and
bought in a larger quantity and at a more rapid pace than ever before. Capitalism
causes businesses to manufacture products in the most efficient manner possible, so
that they can reach the largest audience possible. When a large number of people
own the same things, which often have a prescribed lifespan, a sense of
responsibility is not necessary, as anything that is broken can easily be replaced with
another thing that is improved and, most... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, ownership of ideas and ownership of things are different on many levels.
First, while things are directly made by people or machines, one s ideas and
knowledge can only be influenced from the outside, not completely formed there. A
teacher may instruct a class on any subject, and each student will receive a different
version of the subject which was taught. However, if that same teacher gives each
student an identical physical object, they have all received the same physical object
and nothing more. Additionally, one s ideas and knowledge are essential to one s
sense of self, as they contribute to one s point of view and actions. Material
possessions, by contrast, are not integral to one s personality and

Reasons The Roman Empire Crumble
The Main reasons the Roman Empire Crumbled
The Roman Empire was one of the greatest empires in that era until something
major happened. The Roman military became lazy because of how much freedom
the citizens got in their life with the Huns. So what were the key reasons on how
the Roman Empire to crumble? Rome crumbled because of its military problems
in the army, foreign invasions that attacked Rome, and their poor political
leadership in the government. Of these, the most important reason was poor
political leadership in the government. Problems in the military such as armor and
loss of soldier because the Roman Emperor told his troops, that it was an option
not to wear breastplates and not to do parade drills. These poor decisions from the
Roman government and empire lead to Rome became taken over by the Huns. But
the Roman citizens became overjoyed when the Huns took over, this led Rome
crumble. Roman foot soldiers were a key part of the military, but before the year 400
CE, Roman foot soldiers became negligent and lazy. Eventually, the foot soldiers
abandoned parade ground drills (Document B). This hurts the military and the Roman
empire, but it became worse when the foot soldiers asked the emperor to set aside
breastplates, and then their helmets (Document B). When these changes took place,
the soldiers of Rome fought the Goths without any protection for their chests and
heads, which often made the soldiers vulnerable to archers as the foot soldiers died

Canadian Foreign Policy Essay
Canadian Foreign Policy
Introduction
As the 20th century comes to an end, Canada is a transcontinental nation whose
interests and representatives span the face of the globe and extend into every sphere
of human behaviour. However this was not always the case. When the four colonies
of British North America united to create Canada on July 1, 1867, the new country s
future was by no means secure. Canada was a small country, with unsettled borders,
vast empty spaces, and a large powerful neighbour, the United States. Confronting
these challenges was difficult for the young country. Though Canada was independent
in domestic matters, Britain retained control over its foreign policy. Over the next
fifty or so years, Canada s leaders and its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nevertheless the government soon found that even such a prosaic agenda required
the beginnings of a system of Canadian representation abroad, most notably in the
mother country. All correspondence between Ottawa and London passed through the
Governor General who was described as the human link in the imperial chain. 5
It was in the weary war years of Mackenzie King in the 1930 s when the
development of Canadian foreign policy started to take shape. Before that period
Canada did not have an independent foreign policy with no international presence
whatsoever and Canadian people saw themselves as part of the British dynasty.
The first period in the formulation of Canadian foreign policy was in fact the
absence of policy and it was World War 1 which gave birth to foreign policy. Sixty
thousand Canadians were lost which left Canadians wary of international
development especially when there were very few military objectives. Canada had
minimal control over her own troops and negotiations with the British were a
challenge. Our troops were under control of the British and negotiating with the
British was challenging. Looking back, there was almost a sense of absurdity about
WW1. Therefore, Canadians came out of WW1 with a stronger than ever desire for
independence. The Statute of Westminster, 1931, was the last of the Imperial Acts of
the Parliament of Great Britain applicable to all dominions. It granted Canada,

The Movie Franchise Star Wars
The movie franchise star wars has been around for over fifty years. It s a classic
drama series about dark and light forces trying to get the best of one another. The
Jedi and the Sith are both factions which use the essences of the universe in order to
obtain their special abilities that they use to their advantage. The force is split
between the Jediwho represent the light force, and the Sithwho represent the dark
force. So which of the two, light or dark, is the better as seen in the star wars
storylines. The Jedi seem to have the upper hand and here are some reasons why.
The Jedi and Sith both use Lightsabers(Short swords made with laser energy) when
fighting enemies or dueling with one another. They give them both huge advantages
in battle, because they can use the force to detect where things will be before they
happen. When they are attacked with a blaster or lightsaber, the laser it is deflected
off of the blade. This also makes for some really spectacular duels between the two.
So which of the two has the better lightsaber? Lightsabers are formed from special
crystals which the Jedi or Sith have to meditate on for weeks on end until it can form
a blade. The Sith made the their sabers with synthetic crystals that they had to put into
a furnace whereas the Jedi used a special natural growing crystal found on Dantooine,
Ilum, or the Adega System. When the blades are finally constructed, they have a
certain color which corresponds to their personality. The Sith
How Does Elite Power Influence American Government
Examining Power, Elites, and Political Influence in American Government At the
crux of understanding this segment of thought is understanding that, at the core,
elites have controlled society and government since the beginning of mankind. In fact,
it is democracy and the democratic method (such as devised in the United States) that
serves as the crucial check on the power of elites over society. In this paper we will
examine who the powerful are, the interests they represent, and lastly how democracy
serves as a check on those powers. Politics at its core is fundamentally about the
struggle for who has power in the system. From the beginning of groups of mankind,
individuals have struggled to determine who has control, and that has essentially been
the ruling elite class. Traditionally, that has been people from four traditional classes.
First, the dominant religions and religious theocracies, such as Iran, the Church of
England, etc. Secondly, they tend to be the dominant race of ethnic groups who
control the land, wealth, and power although this is not always the case (South Africa
for example.) Third, they tend to the military acting on behalf of the fourth category,

the power elite are defined today. However, the Italian political scientist Gaetano

Enter Three Witches Chapter Summary
Enter Three Witches is a gripping retelling of Shakespeare s classic Macbeth.
Written by Caroline Cooney, the novel follows Lady Mary as she experiences the
tyranny of Lady Macbeth, and the struggles of trying to save the lives of anyone she
can. Many comparisons can be drawn to the original, however many differences are
prevalent. Although suspenseful and action packed, Enter Three Witchesstruggles
with keeping characters straight and starts off very slow. Cooney takes the reader on
a sporadic point of view hopping adventure throughout the world of Mr. and Mrs.
Macbeth. Following Lady Mary, Seyton, Fleance, and the maids, we get an
individual perspective of the events of Macbeth. It soon becomes very difficult to
determine what events are being referred to, and extremely difficult due to the time
frames being covered. The story covers many characters and relations, and gives an

exposition covering the vast amount of people. We are repeatedly told how Lady
Mary is afraid, and how she is struggling to escape the harsh realities of life with

bore. Although there is an early battle revealed in the novel, the drawn out
expositions overshadow the suspense of Enter Three Witches. The novel also
focuses too much on the role the witches play. In the original Macbeth, the battle of
ambition versus prophecy is shown in the likes of Macbeth. Macbeth decidedly acts
on his own accord, and his greed turns him into a mad man. It is shown countless
times throughout the original that ambition trumps prophecy. In Enter Three

To his Coy Mistress and To the Virgins, To Make Much of Time
Carpe diem is a Latin term used in literature, the use of this term presses readers to
seize the moment. In the chosen poems, the authors mainly try to pursue women, by
letting them know that they have true physical beauty and should take advantage of
their good looks while it lasts. The word carpe diem impacts both poems, To the
Virgins, to Make Much of Time by Robert Herrick, and To His Coy Mistress by
Andrew Marvell. In Herrick s poem, To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time, he
describes carpe diem by citing the shortness of life and by trying to persuade
young women to marry and enjoy their youth at its advantage before death. In the
poem To His Coy Mistress , Marvell explains more traits of carpe diem by
persuading a certain woman in being his wife. To persuade her he used examples of
time and age fading her beauty and how it will leave her with nothing once they re
gone. Both poems compare to each other by persuading to seize moments before old
age and beauty disappears.
Herrick s To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time fits the meaning of carpe diem by
encouraging the beauty of youth and life itself. His calm and moralizing approach

His summary of the sun describes being a virgin to life and marriage. His words
consist of characteristics that he propose should be treasured, protected, and
useful. Herrick s poem encourages the carpe diem style of other English poets as
well and brought it to a better extent. For instance, Andrew Marvell s English
poetry of, To His Coy Mistress , sets aside more of a moral consideration of carpe
diem. He portrays a personal situation addressing to one woman he desires and tries
to persuade her into loving him. His tone suggests her temperament to make love,
despite of her own
What Is The Strange Dichotomy
The strange dichotomy is a problem of organizational design where in which one
needs to establish how to change the structure of government in order to allow for
the efficient delivery of public goods. The Second Generation Theory (SGT)
suggests that decentralization occurs in order to enforce the alignment of perverse
incentives. The foundation upon which the Second Generation Theory rests, stems
from the application of industrial organization, to the greater public sphere. There is
a trade off between local accountability and the coordination of policies (Oates,
2005). In addition, the rational for decentralization of the public sector has no
relation to the preference revelation problem. Instead, in terms of the political sphere
there is a political accountability problem. In order to solve this organizational design
issue, one can draw on the theory of Tiebout, where in which he emphasizes the idea
of treating the state as if it were a market. As mentioned above, this will result in
competition amongst jurisdictions as well as enforces a sense of public mobility,
where if the economic agent finds itself dissatisfied with the service received by their
current jurisdiction, they are entitled, under such circumstances, to relocate to
another jurisdiction. In terms of competitive federalism, as outlined by Qian Weingast

The paper provided two solutions that contradict the strange dichotomy. The solutions
provide reasons as to why central government intervention is not required to
establish preferences at a local level. The first solution is a competitive decentralized
government as proposed by Oates. The second solution provides insight into
unconditional grants that are made use of to solve preferences that are not known, ex
ante, once decentralization has occurred in order to align perverse

Read the Health Cruises Case and submit answers to the following questions.
1. What is the minimum number of passengers Health Cruises must sign up by
November 20th to break even? [show your calculations]
Considering that an average ticket price is $1500 and the cost per passenger is $200,
each sold ticket generates $1,300 of the positive cash flow. Since $295,000 of the
initial capital had been spent by November 14th, the following minimum number of
passengers must sign up in order for Health Cruises to break even provided no more
money is invested:
Minimum passengers to break even = $295,000 / $1,300 = 227.

Health Cruises, Inc.
Health Cruises, Inc. packages cruises to Caribbean islands such as Martinique and
the Bahamas. Like conventional cruises, the packages are designed to be fun. But
the cruise is structured to help participants become healthier by breaking old habits,
such as smoking and overeating. The Miami based firm was conceived by Susan
Isom, 30, a self styled innovator and entrepreneur. Prior to this venture, she had spent
several years in North Carolina promoting a behavior modification clinic.
Isom determined that many people were very concerned about developing good
health habits, yet they seemed unable to break away from their old habits because of
the pressures of day to day living. She reasoned that they might have a chance for
much greater success in a pleasant and socially supportive environment, where good
health habits were fostered. Accordingly, she established Health Cruises, Inc., hired
10 consulting psychologists and health specialists to develop a program, and
chartered a ship. DeForrest Young, a Miami management consultant, became the
chairperson of Health Cruises. Seven of Isom s business associates contributed an
initial capital outlay totaling more than $250,000. Of this amount, $65,000 went for
the initial advertising budget, $10,000 for other administrative expenses, and
$220,000 for the ship rental and crew.

Essay On Dividend Allocation
Dividend allocation
Another key stream of the proposed carbon tax policy is to promise dividend to all
individual Americans on an equal and quarterly basis. The proposal argues that this
amount is sufficient to compensate increased financial burden on consumers due to
the carbon tax. However, equal distribution of dividend may not be able to
compensate appropriately because individuals are not worse off to the same extent by
the carbon tax. This is because not all individuals earn the same level of income, and
more importantly, the energy consumption has a negative relationship over income
level.

Therefore, the carbon tax dividend needs to be adjusted based on the relative carbon
tax impact on different level groups to compensate different groups loss accordingly.
In addition, the government also needs to consider a dividend in terms of different
level of consumption of carbon intensive energy. As we have seen in figure 3, the
highest income level group consumes up to 4 times more energy than the lowest
income level group. Also, there is no incentive for high income individuals to reduce
emissions because even high energy consumption is a small fraction compared to
their high income level. Therefore, it is critically important to differentiate carbon
dividend depending upon the income level in the proper compensating perspective. In
addition, there is also an alternative way for the government to take in terms of
lowering the electricity consumption, which is consumed mostly by the high income
group as we discussed above. That is adopting non linear pricing for electricity and
gasoline. When the total energy consumption gets smaller, the total carbon emission
level will decline since energy supply only exists to meet the demand. Thus, this new
equilibrium of saving energy will eventually limit electricity price from soaring up
and protect the low income group from the additional burden.

Appropriate carbon tax rate. As explained above, a carbon tax could play a pivotal

Company Complexity Of Ge And Mcvay
Company Complexity
According to Ge and McVay research study findings, business complexity is
positively correlated with firm disclosure of material weaknesses. They hypothesized
that the firms with more complicated transactions likely to have greater chance for a
disconnect in the financial reporting process, and thus a material weakness (Ge et
al., 148). To measure business complexity, Ge and McVay used the number of
operating segments reported in the annual 10 K and the existence of foreign currency
exchange translation. Ge and McVay had two subgroups within their study: firms that
disclosed material weaknesses and a control group of 2003 Compustat firms who did
not report any material weaknesses.

In comparison to Doyle et al. study, Doyle and his colleagues hypothesized that the
complexity of the firm is a driver of internal control weaknesses (Doyle et al., 9). To
measure the business complexity of a firm, Doyle et al. used three measures to
include the number of special purpose entities, number of operating segments and the
existence of foreign currency adjustment. The findings of Doyle et al. were as
predicted. The three complexity measures were higher in firms that reported material
weaknesses in comparison to the 2003 Compustat firms, who did not report any
material weaknesses. This indicates that company complexity is positively correlated
to the disclosure of material misstatements.
Company Profitability
In relation to the Ge and McVay research study findings, company profitability is
negatively correlated with firm disclosure of material weaknesses. Ge and McVay
hypothesized that poorly performing firms simply might not be able to adequately
invest in proper internal controls (Ge et al., 151). This would result in a greater
chance of disclosing material weaknesses. In order to test their hypothesis, they used
two profitability metrics consisting of return on assets (ROA) and cash from
operations scaled by assets (CFO/A).
In reference to the Ge and McVay research findings, as presented in Figure B1 ,
material weakness firms had lower ROA and CFO/A compared to the control group
of 2003 Compustat firms (excluding material

Introduction Healey and Zimmerman state (2010) that an innovative program will
require not only team effort, but input from community leaders as well as

a community education campaign, as well as the program continuance, including
funding. The campaign should be built constructed on strong and understandable
messages, so that the target population can take action and pass on the message from
its memorable key components. An effective campaign then, will devise under the

Ethics And Ethical Standards For Accounting Professionals
When in Rome, do what the Romans do, should that be our thinking when it comes
to making ethical decisions. Can ethics be flexible where business leaders and
organizations operates with one set of standards in their homeland and another
overseas (George, 2008)? Now, that our world has gone global, it is imperative that
we maintain a common set of ethical standards of making decisions and running
businesses across the globe. Ethics, derived from the Greek word ethos means
custom or usage, it includes the ideas of character and of disposition. Ethical
standards are based on the principles of trust, integrity, fairness, equality, and
accountability among others. Today, there s a growing need for the ethical mandate

Different companies set the ethical standards that are meaningful to their
organization. Ethical standards help employees in making right decisions that are
beneficial to the organization (Ebimobewei, 2012). Employees become open when
they see a wrong and unethical act to the company. Ethical standards provide
guidance on what to do when ethical dilemmas arise. Professional, ethical codes
and standards expect members of all professions regardless of job title, cultural
differences or local laws to act with integrity and place the interest of customers
above own interests. It expects professionals to be competent and respectful.
Professional codes and standards require members of a profession to maintain and

employees to employers and customers, analysis of investment, responsibilities and
conflict of interest, professionalism and integrity of capital markets. Professionals
who behave ethically act with integrity, show respect to everyone they interact with,

and are responsible. For over a decade, the global community has claimed a set of

Native Americans Essays
In the early days of English settlement in the American colonies, the Indian European
relationship of each area was the determining factor in the survival of the newly

continue to support the arrival of new settlers. However, a colonythat had trouble
maintaining ties with their Indian neighbors had a tough time attracting settlers and

In 1620, many Pilgrims died in a very tough winter, but the colony survived
because of the help provided by local Indian groups. Not only did the Indians help,
but the two groups were able to set up trade and exchange methods and supplies.
This continued when the Puritans arrived in the late 1620 s, but things changed
soon after. Again, English disease wiped out the local Indian tribes and allowed
for the continued expansion deeper into the New England woodlands. Because of
the influence and help of the early Indian groups in this area, the English gained
critical knowledge and support to establish a successful colony. Other areas of
New England soon developed problems with Indians. The English settlers of the
Connecticut Valley and the Pequot Indians were involved in a bloody battle, as
well as the King Phillips War in Massachusetts and Rhode Island in the 1670 s. As
the 1600 s progressed, Indians were able to gain technological experience with the
higher power European weapons and resulted in tougher battles for the English.
However, other areas remained in good standing with their locals, such as in
Maryland. In the 1630 s, two groups of settlers arrived and set up a settlement on the
Potomac River. They established good relations with the Indians, and as a result,

Olaudah Equiano Research Paper
Olaudah Equiano, known by many other names such as, Gustavas Vassa, Jacob, and
Michael was kidnapped from his family, home, and childhood at an early age and
was sold into slavery. Equiano never knew what to expect from day to day, as his
circumstances were always changing. During his captivity and slaverythere were
times he longed for death to come for him and thought of being in Heaven as a
comfort. However, his captivity was not all bad, as he learned how to speak
English, read and write, and how to become a successful merchant. Equiano later
chose to write about his ordeal in his work titled, The Interesting Narrative of the Life

actions do not line up with the word of God. He considered the separation of
family members to be the worst type of punishment, as he was separated from his
sister shortly after his capture. This is very similar to Rowlandson s narrative as she
was separated from her children during her captivity narrative entitled, A Narrative of
the Captivity and Restoration . Both of these narratives have some similarities and
are considered captivity narratives being written from the victims stand point. They

The Struggle For Women Emancipation And Empowerment
Gandhi
Contemporary Period At the time of the advent of the British rule in India, the status
and position of Indian woman were very stumpy. Customs such as of polygamy, the
purdah, the denial of a woman s right over property, child marriages, and Sati etc.,
during this period resulted in the development of a very weak personality of Indian
woman. The British influence had a very deep impression in the minds of Indian
leaders. The reformist movements of the 19th century brought social reformers such
as Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Swami Dayanand Saraswati,
Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and many others, who
were in the forefront of the struggle for women emancipation and empowerment
Gandhi s efforts led to the elevation of the women s position, involving them in the
struggle for freedom, social progress and political independence. well known among
them were Sarojini Naidu, Kasturba Gandhi, Kamala Nehru, and Aruna Asaf Ali who
participated in the political arena. After initial hesitation, even Muslims took to
modern western education in large number and thanks goes to the efforts of Sir
Sayyid Ahmad Khan and others. The Muslim student population in modern high
schools was generally fair enough to their numerical strength. Time of Transformation
of the Status of Women The early 20th century observed as a nascent women s
movement which campaigned for furthering female education, raising the age of
marriage for woman and the abolition
Relationship Between God And Israel
TB 133 140 The author dives into chapter six by addressing the prophetic themes,
covenant, judgment and redemption. According to the author all the prophets have
a special relationship between God and Israel. They all share a common theme as
well. Themes include announcement of judgment on Israel, punishment,
announcement of restoration after a rebellion and comparisons of Israel. The
author also points out what Israel is the main focus throughout the old testament.
God choose Israel and entered into a covenant so his expectations are high
compared to other nations living at that time. Which is why intense images being
express the relationship between God and Israel. Such images include parent
child, husband wife, church bride, shepherd flock, owner vineyard and potter clay.
When Israel rebels against God Israel is compared to a prostitute or camel.
However, even when Israel is beyond redemption, the chosen prophets beg for
repentance from the nation of Israel. More common is the image of people turning
away from God even when presented salvation. The author presents the prophetic
books in canonical order. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the Scroll of the Twelve are
presented to the reader providing an introduction of each book. According to the
author the book of Isaiah is a view into the school of prophecy descending from the
great eighth century. Additionally, evidence has surfaced confirming Isaiah did not
write the entire book himself but rather is a complied

  • 2. How Have Civil Rights Changed Since The 1960 s The development of civil rights women since the 1950 s and 1960 s has been tremendous, but there are still some things that have not changed. Before, women were prohibited from many of the everyday things in our society. Women could not obtain credit cards; they could not attend Ivy League schools, or go on birth control pills. Recently, on March 30, the U.S women s soccer team filed a complaint to U.S Soccer for wage discrimination. The individual players of the team earn as little as 40% of what players on the U.S men s soccer team earns. Not only do they earn significantly less than the men players, but they also play on damaged and dangerous fields, such as the one during their World Cup Victory Tour friendly against Trinidad and Tobago. Even... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Women lost their jobs along with possessing a limited amount of freedoms. Women could not go on birth control pills because it was illegal. This prohibition limited much of women s rights. It obliterated the freedom women had to choose whether they wanted children or not. The usage of birth control was legalized in 1957 only for severe menstrual distress , not as a contraceptive. Not only did women not have a choice in whether they wanted kids or not, but they also did not have the freedom to achieve a better education; they were restricted from learning at Ivy League schools. Schools, such as Yale and Harvard, did not admit female students until 1969; for some other schools, such as Harvard, they did not accept female students until as late as 1977. Lastly, women could not experience equality in their workplaces. They were kept out of administrative positions. Furthermore, for every dollar a man earned a woman earned only 60 cents, and a woman of color earned 42 cents. Thus, along with the limitations on their freedoms, women encountered many

  • 5. Relapse Of Sustainable Rehabilitation Sustainable Rehabilitation is the only way to truly make a dent in addiction. Addicts must be offered an alternative to their previous lifestyle. A large percentage of addicts who go to rehab, often get out and return to the same habit of their addiction after a period of time. Short term rehabilitation is not as effective as a long term program aimed at changing habits and routine. In order to prevent relapses and in extreme cases death, a variety of methods are used to help the addict maintain a clean and sober life. The end goal is a sustained rehabilitation that leads to a productive and successful life. Scientists and physicians say that addiction is a complex, but treatable disease that affects brain function and behavior. The use of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Acamprosate, disulfiram, and naltrexone are medications approved for treating alcohol dependence. Medically assisted detoxification is only the first stage of addiction treatment and by itself does little to change long term drug abuse. Medically assisted detoxification can safely manage the acute physical symptoms of withdrawal for some individuals. It can also pave the way for effective long term addiction treatment. Detoxification alone is rarely sufficient to help addicted individuals achieve long term abstinence. Thus, patients should be encouraged to continue drug treatment following detoxification. Motivational enhancement and incentive strategies, beginning at initial patient intake, can improve treatment

  • 7. A Research Study On The Vaccination Schedule The study is significant because certain types of HPV can lead to venereal warts, which can ultimately lead to cancer in male and female patients. This disease is preventable, but uptake of the vaccine has been below the expected level since its introduction. One of the goals of Healthy People 2020 is to reduce the proportion of females with HPV infection. The primary means of preventing cervical, anal, penile and oropharyngeal cancer resulting from HPV is completing the vaccination series. Adherence to the vaccination schedule is an important health initiative, so nursing researchthat helps to increase adherence is essential. This research study will attempt to increase compliance through interviewing patients, providing education, reducing barriers, offering the vaccination and following up using phone calls. The methods used in this study could be applied in other populations because an understanding on reasons for hesitancy and non compliance will be better understood. The reasons will differ between population types, so interventions would have to be individualized to meet the needs of the specific group. The goal is to increase vaccine compliance and reduce the incidence of HPV and the complications that may result from this virus. Research Aim The aim of the research is to help identify the health beliefs that adolescents age 11 20 and their parents have regarding the risk of becoming infected with HPV. Since the compliance in males is especially low, the

  • 9. Odysseus Character Analysis On an individual s quest to figure out who they are, it is necessary that they test themselves and see who they are in relation to society. One character that has inspired generations of people with his craftiness is the Iliadic hero known as Odysseus Laertiades, who threw himself into danger at every chance to prove himself on his journey home after the Trojan war. In the epic poem entitled The Odysseythat was written by Homer, Odysseusshows how he views himself in relation to others and carries himself in front of individuals he meets. One character that has been subject to Odysseus s craftiness was Poseidon s son, Polyphemus the Cyclops. Odysseus desires to explore Polyphemus s cave, and upon being noticed with his men, the Cyclops asks who they are, and Odysseus responds We are from Troy, Akaians, blown off course...We served under Agamemnon...we stand beholden for your help, or any gifts...as custom is to honor strangers (9.280 290). Odysseus tries to win the support of Polyphemus by bragging about how he s a soldier that just arrived at his home, and as guests, Odysseus and his crew are entitled to the help and gifts by the host of the cave. In another scene, Odysseus also tries a similar routine of asking for help with the PhaiГЎkian princess named Nausikaa when he mentions near the Altar of Apollo...I had troops under me (6.185 186). Odysseus presents himself as a veteran that is entitled to help from whoever he meets, and Polyphemus couldn t care less. Odysseus tends to attempt to woo those he meets to try to get their support. Polyphemus is unmoved by Odysseus s words and further questions Odysseus asking where was it, now, you left your ship (9.300 304). Odysseus replies with a lie that Poseidon broke their ship on the rocks near the shore (9.309 311). Odysseus is just exploring the island and Polyphemus s cave, but he formulated the identity of a shipwrecked sailor. He presented himself and his crew as helpless strangers that need help to make Polyphemus let his guard down, and make the Cyclops feel that he controls the destiny of the men and they have no means of escape. When it comes time for the men escape to Polyphemus s cave, they can make a quick escape without worrying about
  • 10. Judith Jarvis Thomson s A Defense Of Abortion Essay Judith Jarvis Thomson s A Defense of Abortion is a uniquely reasoned argument for the right to abortion that uses strong analogies to challenge pro life arguments that are based on the premise that a human life begins at the moment of conception. In this paper I will argue that Thomson is correct in her view and that her analogies solidify her argument, which then becomes impervious to criticism from philosophers like Keith J. Pavlischek or David B. Hershenov who bring up other factors irrelevant to Thomson argument that are easily disputable by facts. Thomson starts her paper by clarifying that while she does not agree with the premise that life begins at the moment of conception she is willing to accept it in her argument to prove that it is a counterpoint to abortionthat is as weak as the rest of the pro life argument. In her essay, Thomson uses three major analogies to illustrate different scenarios to which abortion would be considered. The Violinist Analogy describes a pregnancythat has been induced by rape and, foreshadows to a section later in the essay, where she goes into detail about where the line is drawn when two innocent lives are at risk and what is the third party s role in the problem solving. It is a case in which the Society of Music Lovers has kidnapped you and attached you to a revered violinist who needs your kidneys to support him so he can live. The doctor says it is a nine month procedure, after which, he will be healthy again and you will

The Drug Of The Pharmaceutical Industry The birth of pharmaceutical industry has increased the longevity of our lives in society and eradicated diseases such as chicken pox and hives, but has created an addiction to prescription drugs in America. The concept of prescription has made society to believe that taking pharmaceutical drugs comes without a consequence. Though these drugs come with consequence, the positive effects of the pharmaceutical industry helped eradicate diseases that would be a potential threat to our lively hood in today s society. Opiates that are often prescribed are codeine, OxyContin and Vicodin which are the same opioids that are sold in the streets like heroin. Both these drugs come from the opium poppy, but the difference is the legal and illegal way of obtaining these drugs. This has created society s dependence on legal drugs with pharmaceutical companies making huge profits off of our addiction. It is now an established fact that there is an intense linkage between migration and informal sector, specially that in the urban sector. Number of literature suggests that there exist a two way causation between these two factors. While migration helps in booming of urban informal sector, similarly this development of informal sector attracts further migration. Number of studies has been made in this regard. There are various issues through which one can interlink rural to urban migration and informal sector. Regarding the interlinkage between rural to urban migration and urban informal sector Banerjee (1983) came up with some interesting findings. The study suggests that majority of the people who are migrating into the urban sector are illiterate and of unskilled type. As a result they become unable to get a formal job in the urban formal job market. A major portion of this unskilled migrated labour force joins to the urban informal job market. Finally this low quality of migration has resulted into low quality urbanization in urban India which ultimately led to an urban decay. Studying the interrelationship between rural to urban migration and urban informal sector Meng (2001) find that the issue is controversial . According to the author, most classical migration models treat the informal sector as a temporary employment opportunity for migrants (Todaro, 1969; Fields, 1975), though some empirical studies challenged this assumption and suggested that the informal sector may play an important role in economic development (ILO, 1972; Bhattacharya, 1993; Banerjee, 1983). The study found that two groups, namely wage earner and self employed, in the informal sector have played different roles in attracting migrants when compared to the formal sector. While the wage earner group provides temporary employment opportunities to migrants, the self employed group appears to be a desirable employment choice for the in migrants. One of the interesting finding of the study is that migrants having higher human capital choose to be self employed
  • 16. The Crossing Of The Delaware And The Victory At Trenton A E s The Crossing is an exceptional dramatization of the crossing of the Delaware and the victory at Trenton. It depicts the actions that George Washington and his men took leading up to the renowned battle. The main points portrayed by the film are relatively accurate; however, there are still many historical inaccuracies. Washington s use of profanity in the film, the weather during the march to Trenton, and the flag flown by the American army are just a few. George Washington s dialogue in The Crossing is the least accurate element of the film. Washington s leadership style was the direct opposite. Nearly thirty years before the crossing of the Delaware, Washington made clear how he felt about profanity in his Rules of Civility. His twenty second rule stated: Use no reproachful language against anyone, neither curse, nor revile. Ten years later, he made this clear in his military affairs: Colonel Washington has observed that the men of his regiment are very profane and reprobate. He takes this opportunity to inform them of his great displeasure at such practices and assures them that if they do not leave them off, they shall be severely punished. The officers are desired, if they hear any man swear or make use of an oath or execration, to order the offender twenty five lashes immediately, without court martial. For the second offense, he will be more severely punished (Sparks). Washington s loathing for expletives persisted even 30 years later as seen in

Comparatively, Telephone , a popular children s game, is where a child makes up a sentence and the sentence is passed by word of mouth in a circle. Once the sentence is back to the beginning, the children often laugh at how different the sentence is from the original. This is exactly what the advanced technology does. I have identified three different options: Increase Syrian refugee resettlement commitments, establish safe zones in northern Syria, or seal the Syrian border. As conditions continue to deteriorate in Syria and the number of refugees continues to increase, it is critical that you strengthen the U.S. position in the country of Syria. The establishment of safe zones would align our moral, strategic, and diplomatic interests more than any other possible policy. Half of the electorate or more wants refugees to establish safe homelands near or in their country, if possible, reducing the perceived risk of increasing potential terrorism in the United States, the notion grounded in reality or not. Also, historically, refugees have been allowed safe harbor in United States and we could continue in such tradition, in the safest possible way. BACKGROUND The conflict in Syria between the government of Bashar al Assad and various other forces, which started in the spring of 2011, continues to cause displacement within the country and across the region. By the end of 2014, approximately 7.6 million people were internally displaced and 3.7 million Syrians had fled the country since the start of the conflict. Over 21.5 million people, or half of the country s pre war population, have been displaced. The refugee situation is urgent, and it has placed an enormous burden on

However this was not always the case. When the four colonies of British North America united to create Canada on July 1, 1867, the new country s future was by no means secure. Canada was a small country, with unsettled borders, vast empty spaces, and a large powerful neighbour, the United States. Confronting these challenges was difficult for the young country. All correspondence between Ottawa and London passed through the Governor General who was described as the human link in the imperial chain. 5 It was in the weary war years of Mackenzie King in the 1930 s when the development of Canadian foreign policy started to take shape. Before that period Canada did not have an independent foreign policy with no international presence whatsoever and Canadian people saw themselves as part of the British dynasty. The first period in the formulation of Canadian foreign policy was in fact the absence of policy and it was World War 1 which gave birth to foreign policy. Sixty thousand Canadians were lost which left Canadians wary of international development especially when there were very few military objectives. It s a classic drama series about dark and light forces trying to get the best of one another. The Jedi and the Sith are both factions which use the essences of the universe in order to obtain their special abilities that they use to their advantage. The force is split between the Jediwho represent the light force, and the Sithwho represent the dark force. So which of the two, light or dark, is the better as seen in the star wars storylines. The Jedi seem to have the upper hand and here are some reasons why. The Jedi and Sith both use Lightsabers(Short swords made with laser energy) when fighting enemies or dueling with one another. How Does Elite Power Influence American Government Examining Power, Elites, and Political Influence in American Government At the crux of understanding this segment of thought is understanding that, at the core, elites have controlled society and government since the beginning of mankind. In fact, it is democracy and the democratic method (such as devised in the United States) that serves as the crucial check on the power of elites over society. In this paper we will examine who the powerful are, the interests they represent, and lastly how democracy serves as a check on those powers. Politics at its core is fundamentally about the struggle for who has power in the system. From the beginning of groups of mankind, individuals have struggled to determine who has control, and that has essentially been the ruling elite class. Traditionally, that has been people from four traditional classes. Although suspenseful and action packed, Enter Three Witchesstruggles with keeping characters straight and starts off very slow. Following Lady Mary, Seyton, Fleance, and the maids, we get an individual perspective of the events of Macbeth. To his Coy Mistress and To the Virgins, To Make Much of Time Carpe diem is a Latin term used in literature, the use of this term presses readers to seize the moment. The word carpe diem impacts both poems, To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time by Robert Herrick, and To His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell. What Is The Strange Dichotomy The strange dichotomy is a problem of organizational design where in which one needs to establish how to change the structure of government in order to allow for the efficient delivery of public goods. The Second Generation Theory (SGT) suggests that decentralization occurs in order to enforce the alignment of perverse incentives. The foundation upon which the Second Generation Theory rests, stems from the application of industrial organization, to the greater public sphere. There is a trade off between local accountability and the coordination of policies (Oates, 2005). In addition, the rational for decentralization of the public sector has no relation to the preference revelation problem. Instead, in terms of the political sphere there is a political accountability problem. In order to solve this organizational design issue, one can draw on the theory of Tiebout, where in which he emphasizes the idea of treating the state as if it were a market. As mentioned above, this will result in competition amongst jurisdictions as well as enforces a sense of public mobility, where if the economic agent finds itself dissatisfied with the service received by their current jurisdiction, they are entitled, under such circumstances, to relocate to another jurisdiction. The proposal argues that this amount is sufficient to compensate increased financial burden on consumers due to the carbon tax. However, equal distribution of dividend may not be able to compensate appropriately because individuals are not worse off to the same extent by the carbon tax. Therefore, the carbon tax dividend needs to be adjusted based on the relative carbon tax impact on different level groups to compensate different groups loss accordingly. In addition, the government also needs to consider a dividend in terms of different level of consumption of carbon intensive energy. As we have seen in figure 3, the highest income level group consumes up to 4 times more energy than the lowest income level group. Also, there is no incentive for high income individuals to reduce emissions because even high energy consumption is a small fraction compared to their high income level. Therefore, it is critically important to differentiate carbon dividend depending upon the income level in the proper compensating perspective. In addition, there is also an alternative way for the government to take in terms of lowering the electricity consumption, which is consumed mostly by the high income group as we discussed above. That is adopting non linear pricing for electricity and gasoline. When the total energy consumption gets smaller, the total carbon emission level will decline since energy supply only exists to meet the demand. Thus, this new equilibrium of saving energy will eventually limit electricity price from soaring up and protect the low income group from the additional burden.
